It's a great place to go before a comedy show, take a date here, or just a good time with friends. The lighting is brighter than I remember. Last time I couldn't see any of my food but I really enjoyed it last time and even more this time. Definitely would get oysters again but I love that they change up the menu. I completely understand why this place won a James Beard award - it is absolutely deserved. I love whiskey, however they have a massive selection of alcohols outside of whiskey too, so there is something for everyone! The space is cozy and intimate. You go down a flight of stairs on arrival into a small space with various types of seating. We got the B-side remix and Foggy Notion cocktails which were both fantastic! I also got a pour of Japanese whiskey which was excellent as expected. We got the Wagyu tartar, half a dozen oysters, and the Softshell Crab sando. I am a huge fan of soft-shell crab but this was the best prepared soft-shell crab I've ever had. The service was excellent and everyone was very attentive. Was able to snag a seat at the bar and had the best time ever here. There was a little wait but there's so many places around the area to check out while you're waiting, the time flew by! Probably nobody needs me to say that the Scotch Lodge is a charming and the cocktails are delicious but I will and they are. The service was excellent and the bites were tasty. Their whiskey collection is massive, you can sample the world of whiskey here. But their cocktails stole the show. We were in Portland to attend a wedding, and read that Scotch Lodge had just been awarded the James Beard Award. With high hopes but low expectations, we stopped in to see if we could find a seat. As luck would have it, there as a table for two available for an hour, which fit our timeline nicely. The interior is as nice to look at as the staff going about their duties behind the bar and in the open kitchen. We really enjoyed just watching. What an amazing experience from arrival To end of my meal and cocktail. While traveling I encountered this speakeasy style bar with an amazing small bites menu. The bartenders were so friendly and helpful on the menu and experience and shared their recommendations . I sat at bar and had a delicious old fashioned along with 1/2 dozen oysters and arancini with salmon roe. To say that the meal was to die for and absolutely an experience does not do it justice. The oysters with pomegranate granita was so well paired and delicious. The arancini was soft velvety and perfect with the saltiness of the salmon roe. Absolute hands-down favorite bar in Portland! Scotch Lodge is a must-visit every single time we are in Portland! The food, the cocktails, and the hospitality are consistently incredible. You cannot miss the oysters here--the granitas they pair with them are an absolute work of art. For the first time, we tried the beef tartare, and they hand-chop the meat right on the spot. The funky richness of the cheese on top was perfectly balanced, and wrapping it in gem lettuce made it such a unique and delicious treat. As for the drinks, every single cocktail we ordered was outstanding. I'm not a big fan of overly sweet drinks, so the 'Mojo Jojo Casa House' at the end was absolutely perfect for my palate. 10/10 EXPERIENCE!!! I came here mainly to check out some of their interesting food items and grab a quick drink or two. Gotta say I was blown away by how amazing everything tasted here. Service was really great, helpful, and lightning quick. Food has gotta be hands down some of the best I've ever had. The twists on traditional dishes were all executed to PERFECTION. Oysters were a must and I can say I've never had oysters served that way but it was incredible. Wagyu tartare was so flavorful and rich that I was scraping the plate at the end for more. And finally the panna cotta was the perfect ending adding a delicious light strawberry finish that wasn't too sweet but so good. Would HIGHLY recommend all 3 as they're all 10/10 in my experience. We had very late "New York" reservations for my partner's birthday dinner and needed a way to kill an hour and a half or so beforehand. What better way than wandering into a bar? Not just any bar would do though.... enter the Scotch Lodge. It's not quite the Platonic ideal of a high class bar, but dang, it's very close. Very very close. I mean, it's a bar where you pretty much need reservations, so it's no dive. Fortunately, I had those and we were seated at the bar rail on the curve, just about perfect location. It's a high end bar - house designed cocktails, great food options, impeccable atmosphere. And while you could have ordered something that you could have gotten anywhere else, what would be the point? Our bartender, Jeremy, was super friendly and knowledgeable and freely shared his enthusiasm for what he was doing and accommodated our curiosity about the selection -- which is massive and encyclopedic. We finally settled on our first round - my partner had a Like a Love Song, and I had a Lock Stock. Like a Love Song was very boulevardier adjacent - blended scotch, coffee vermouth, chocolate Campari with an amaro cream float over a big rock. Absolutely delicious. Loch Stock was Manhattan adjacent - split base with mezcal and peated scotch, a splash of Ancho Reyes for some kick, and tea infused sweet vermouth, with mole bitters, with an amazing lemon garnish. Beautiful and tasty. Savoring those and discussing what was next we decided for some snacks but wanted to keep it light as we were heading into something more akin to an Event than a mere meal, so we opted for the Pickle Spiced Fries. I was seriously surprised - crispy fries, coated in powdered dried dill pickles and salt. Just amazing. I had no idea I needed that in my life but now I do. Served with sour cream mixed with fresh dill. Just amazing. With the fries in hand we turned to the second round of drinks. My partner had a Namesake, and I had Penicillin. The Namesake was bold and impressive - scotch, cherry liqueur, sweet vermouth and cynar - again, very boulevardier adjacent but very different. Penicillin was also elevated - split base with Laphroaig sherry cask and Auchentoshan 12 under the traditional lemon and ginger. Here's the thing... I really love a good cocktail and make them at home frequently. I'm adventurous and have a large stock of interesting booze, and subscriptions to recipes and such. I'm not really looking to go sit someplace and drink something I'd have at home in an environment that is not inspired. The Scotch Lodge just blew my hopes away in this regard. Scotch Lodge continues to stand our as one of the most refined dining options in Portland. A beautifully curated small food menu is accompanied by the largest whisky menu I've ever seen. The space is elegant and intimate (reservations are a must) and service is prompt and efficient, though never hovering. There are usually only a couple of pasta options, and they always seem to be unique to Scotch Lodge. This is a place that our adult daughter always wants to visit as a special occasion when she is in town, and she's taken to brining my wife and I along, mostly so that she can sample more items from their menu. They also had amazing food (we didn't get a chance to try the Fried Brie because it was sold out!) like arancini and pickle spiced fries. Drinks in focus in the pictures is the Sinners & Saints (with graham cracker on top) and I think First Date (with the crushed ice) - although the menu may have changed from writing the review/when we went. Mark me down as, shan't be returning! The staff was so down right rude, unwelcoming and absolutely uninterested in creating a positive experience for our party. Wish we wouldn't have stayed for our meal after being dressed down by the host, grunted at by bar staff and side eyed all evening. Forgive me, highness, but I believe in the old timey value of treating your PAYING (and believe you me, you will be emptying that wallet $$$) guests as such. That said, an extensive selective and, it has to be said, delicious food. Fried brie: - This was what I was most excited for. I think I remember reading some review before dining, maybe on Eater, and the review calling out the fried brie as being especially good. I didn't think it was very good though. - The crisp of the exterior wasn't great, it kinda just crumbled and didn't provide a crunch. I would have preferred it to be warmer and more salted too. Brussels sprouts: - I was disappointed here too. For fried foods in general, I prefer the exterior to be nicely fried and crispy but the interior to taste like the food itself. For example, for potatoes I want the interior to be distinct from the exterior and actually taste like potatoes. All too often the whole thing just tastes fried. - And that's what happened with these brussels sprouts. They didn't remain in tact and keep their shape so all the little leaves fell apart and were very fried. It was also too sweet with all of the maple syrup. - I also think it really needed some acid to cut through the fried-ness. I asked for some lime and once I squeezed it it tasted notably better. I think it was under-salted too though. Pickle spiced fries: - As mentioned above, I like it when the interior is distinct from the exterior in fried foods. I didn't experience that here. The potato flavor didn't come through. And the exterior wasn't too crispy and warm either. - The sour cream sauce was really good and a perfect complement, but I think we needed like at least 3x more. Radicchio salad: - I thought this dish was really good. Radicchio in general is just delicious. I love the bitterness and crunch. The almonds and tangerines were great flavors/ingredients. Good balance of flavors and textures. Pappardelle: - This was pretty clearly my favorite dish of the night. I really, really liked it. - The pasta was cooked perfectly. I thought it had the right amount of bite to it. - The sauce was really interesting and cool. At least to me, the broccolini flavor really came through. Like, that was essentially the flavor of the sauce. Which felt a little unique to me and I really enjoyed that flavor, so it was fun. - The broccolini itself was cooked nicely. I prefer it slightly more charred and sweet, but it was still good. Semifreddo: - I liked this dish too. The flavor combinations were good, with the pistachio ice cream, huckleberry, and oreo. The oreo provided some nice crunch/texture too. They didn't skimp there, which I appreciated because I really like when ice cream has enough different textures. Overall: - I think our meal was about $140, including three drinks. That's on the expensive side so and I think they fell somewhat short on quality given the high price. - Then again, some of the dishes were really great. If I went back I think I'd get the last three dishes along with the arancini and squash. Maybe I ordered that I'd be higher on them. - The atmosphere and service were both pretty good. I appreciated when the server recommended against getting too many fried dishes when I asked for her advice. And I really loved sitting at the bar of the open kitchen. - I'm debating between 3 and 4 stars but I think I enjoyed the pappardelle enough where I'll go with 4. read more

We didn't eat much, but the items that we ordered has left us thinking about it for weeks. The parpadelle with duck was not only exceptional, it delivered a strong flavor profile that doesn't seem to be resonated anywhere else. The tartare was SUPER fatty and flavorful.
