I had the strawberry cooler cocktail which was yummy, tho a little on the sweet side and it might as well have been a mocktail bc there was very little booze in it. Not even a whisper of a buzz and I drank it on an empty stomach. Whether that's a good thing or bad is in the eye of the beholder (belly of the drinker?). I wanted to try their dessert but it was sold out so I got their bread and butter which was steaming hot but it was really soft and spongey like it was microwaved. I wanted more of a crisp on the crust and it tasted a bit burned or like it was wheat bread. The butter and jam it's served with were yummy tho. Service was slow. There's only 1 bartender who can't really keep up if there's a crowd. We sat with empty drinks for quite a while and waited for the bill even longer. Met up with some of my girlfriends and they asked four time for the olives and finally it came when I got there after 30 mins. I didn't have a super bad experience since I was late to the party but my baked apple whiskey sour was delicious will get that again! Definitely a spot to have a talk and drinks. I love a good cocktail bar and The End just became one of my favorites in PDX. I love the atmosphere here. Maybe because I was lucky enough to walk by on a night when they were playing classic rock. But the lighting is also a huge part of the appeal of this cozy place. It is so warm, cozy, and inviting. There's a golden glow throughout the place. And the ceiling is covered in dark wood accents. I think that helps to make the place so warm and keeps the conversational sound from becoming too overwhelming. I say this as I relax in a comfy booth in the back of the place that gives me a view to appreciate the entire space. I'm also saying this as I enjoy the view outside on Division street. The entire front of this place is a spectacular set of windows from nearly floor to ceiling. What a spectacular space! It truly comes to life at night! I also enjoyed a couple of terrific Rye Manhattans. They were very well made and I appreciated their broad selection of Rye whiskey to choose from. Got the margarita and added strawberry. It was a good description as it was light on the strawberry so just a little sweetness to a regular margarita. I really enjoyed it and I could tell it had a good amount of alcohol which I appreciate when spending $15. Very nice bartender too. Later my husband took back my glass and was looking for where to fill our water bottle and she offered to fill it and also put ice in which was great on a warm day. Wowza! Such a fun spot! Partner and I decided on a spontaneous date night and ended up popping in here and I'm glad we did. We came on a Thursday night so it was definitely not as crowded as it usually is. The space is smallish and definitely cozy. We sat at the bar and the bartender was super fun and chatty. He gave us good recommendations and cheered us on as we played some card games. The drinks were phenomenal! I had the Hot Topic which was reminiscent of an Orange Julius. My partner had the Born & Bred to Rip & Shred which had a nice bitterness to it. You could taste the thoughtfulness put into these drinks. They seem to have a fun time coming up with unique combinations and flavors here and their menu changes semi frequently I think. We also tried their Butter Cake and the Street Corn Dip. If I lived in Portland I think this would become my go-to bar! I stopped by for a drink before our movie at the tomorrow cut theatre and halfway through the movie I wanted to go back for a second drink. The cocktail menu is so creative and the drinks even more so. My husband got the popcorn old fashioned and it was mind blowing (yes it even tastes like popcorn!). I came in on Sunday, 3/2, around 3:30 PM and sat at the bar. Right away, I was put off by the bartender's unfriendly demeanor, but I chose to overlook it and patiently waited to be asked what we'd like to drink. When she finally asked, I inquired about the available non-alcoholic (N.A.) drinks. She quickly rattled off a few options, then handed me a menu and pointed out the N.A. drink list. While I looked over the menu, she took my friend's beer order and then went to assist other patrons who had just walked in. When she returned, I read my N.A. drink choice verbatim from the menu while pointing directly at it. She then turned to my friend and asked him to repeat the name of the beer he had ordered, as she had forgotten. Fast forward to when we were ready to leave--I still had about half of my drink left, so I asked for a to-go cup. She said they didn't have to-go cups but could give me something "cup-like." Then she asked what it was for, and I said, "My drink." That's when she told me I couldn't take it out of the bar. I started to panic and asked why, since it was a non-alcoholic drink. She then claimed it wasn't. I picked up the menu and pointed to what I had ordered. She responded, "Oh, it sounds like [something else]," though what she claimed it sounded like was nothing close to what I had actually ordered. I told her I've been sober for 11 months. Overwhelmed, I just walked out and broke down in tears. My friend, who was still inside, told me that instead of taking accountability, the bartender kept making excuses and defending herself. We came right at opening last Saturday for a cocktail. The cocktail menu was chock full of interesting and inventive concoctions. I did have a question about a very unusual drink. I asked the surly bartender about how a drink was made and she pointed at the menu. I told her I read it but didn't answer my question. I gave up and just decided to look for something else. When I came in to place our orders there was a couple in the middle of the bar ordering and a group of four at the opposite end of the bar. A woman came in after me and had her order taken ahead of me, which I didn't let bother me. Then a gentleman came in and sat at the bar. He nicely acknowledged I was there first and wouldn't try to jump the line. Guess who the bartender went to next? That's right. He had to remind her that I was next. From reading other reviews, this seems like this bartender's attitude is the norm and not a one off. The drinks were very good but we've never felt so unwelcome in a place.
