Not much one for reviews, but went here Friday night when visiting Tucson and thought it deserved a review. Definitely a mom and pop location, guessing Korean, not a slick seen-or-be-seen spot. But to me that means more reasonable prices but with just as good if not better food, with a coin flip for service. Fish was excellent and no problems with service. We always order sashimi at all sushi bars and thought it was high quality. Not sure how you can judge the taste and freshness of fish in rolls with other ingredients. Its all about the fish, isn't it? We also ordered a few rolls and they were pretty large although they were overly loaded with veggies. They still tasted good however. They were cheap which explains the high veggie content. As stated before, miso was a larger bowl, but a little too salty, with no seaweed or tofu. The soup, soy beans and red bean ice cream were gratis, so hard to complain about the soup. Would recommend. read more

I came here on a few occasions with friends. I really liked the atmosphere, and they give you so much food. Like everyone says, miso soup, edamame, and plum ice cream are complimentary. I haven't had the sushi here, but my friends and I enjoyed their other dishes. I have heard that the chicken katsu is delicious, and I recommend the udon. On one visit, I was craving fried rice, but it was way to salty. That may have been just that one occasion though. Overall, great place. read more

Okay I am a big sushi fanatic and I usually go to Sushi Ten to satisfy raw fish cravings. However we missed the happy hour at Sushi Ten and decided to try something else. Oh man. It was delicious. The food was fresh and tasted like it came from the sea, not the freezer. One deduction is for the lackluster service from the waiter/host. I'm sure text messages are important but at least put your phone away while you are greeting folks. Just as a courtesy at least. That aside, I would totally come back. read more

I frequent this sushi restaurant...by frequent I mean I go about once every few weeks because I crave it. All I can really say is holy delicious! Its a smaller sushi restaurant with a super cute ambiance and friendly service. The sushi chef's don't yell at you when you walk in and thank God for that! I jump everytime...and being frightened when wearing 5 inch heels isn't usually a good situation. I also like the fact that the rolls are smaller in width (not in the amount of food you get). So I don't feel like I'm trying to shove an entire salmon in my mouth. The service is very friendly also. I'll be heading in again when my craving timer starts going off! read more

Decent for Tucson, but I wasn't that impressed. They did not have any of the "fancy stuff" as the chef put it. I guess Uni, Ikura, and Ama-Ebi are considered a fancy compared to the rolls which seem to be their specialty. Unfortunately, they were not carrying uni that night. I have gone here many times since they opened. This place has some of the best sushi you can get in Tucson and is always high quality. The service is always excellent and you can really see that they care about what they do. Definitely recommend you try this place out. read more

Awesome place with very friendly people and good food. They were very eager to serve our large table when we called in to ask if they had space to accommodate us. When our group was cut down by about 10 (people seem to have something against trying sushi), they didn't even look remotely bothered by the fact that we had reserved such a large table. We over-ordered on the sushi because it was just so good. First off we tried the crispy crunch roll and our friends the Las Vegas, we shared these and loved both. Then we ordered way too many rolls and had a ton leftover, but it was nice to have more varieties to try. Definitely will be back. Service was excellent and the complimentary items make it feel a great deal more welcoming than most Japanese restaurants I've tried. read more

Living in LA, I'm used to outstanding sushi all around town. I did like the sushi very much but I think what I enjoyed more was my conversation the Korean sushi chef (I dined alone at the bar). Learned about his family and the family business, how they came to Tucson, etc. Made me feel very comfortable. Try it the bar and strike up a conversation with the chef...he is trained and knows his craft. read more

Coming from LA, who would have thought that in Tucson, AZ I would find an amazing sushi place?! We had salmon sushi which was cut nice and thick, with a smooth texture that melted in my mouth. Kazoku is a surprisingly good restaurant given the sketchyness from outside and the surrounding buildings. The food was good, but I prefer Sushi on Oracle or Yoshimatsu's, they generally have better service and higher quality food at an equivalent price. The staff was very friendly however and the sushi chef and I had a good conversation while I was sitting at the sushi bar. Good place for larger groups since in my experience it doesn't get packed in my experience like the aformentioned places. read more

Kazoku is quickly becoming my favorite sushi place in Tucson. The few times I have been there the sushi is always fresh and looks so artistic! Every meal is started with complimentary miso soup and edamame and finished with ice cream. I love the variety of rolls, the very friendly staff, and the soothing atmosphere. When I first moved to Tucson, I was amazed by the amazing quality of sushi places the town had--largely in comparison to the complete lack of sushi restaurants in central Indiana where I came from. Man, and for $15.00 bucks you could fill yourself disgusting with fish fresher than I'd ever had before. Then I traveled around a bit more of the west coast, and realized that most of the sushi in Tucson was pretty mediocre. I mean, I love it, mediocrity and all because it's a wonderfully healthy option (usually), and really the places aren't inedible. I'm also fairly confident that the sushi options in Tucson have gradually worsened over the past few years--I'm not sure what exactly is hurting the sushi joints in town, but the quality has shifted noticeably since I've been here. That being said, I was a little down on the sushi options in town. I mean, I enjoy Sushi Cho every now and again, and in a bind I'd visit Sushi Garden. In a random yelp experiment, I decided to try out Kazoku Sushi because the ratings weren't bad. I had driven by the place at this rate 100 times without taking second notice that a fairly classy and clean joint was tucked in between a couple of random costume and clothing stores. Don't let the outside fool you, there are some delicious treats to be had inside, and I'll talk about them more a bit later; however, the four star rating is primarily because on my first visit there, the service was a little slow, a little confused on orders, and my friends who have tried the place say this isn't all that uncommon. Personally, I don't mind a wait if I'm in good company, and the service at subsequent visits has been fantastic (smaller crowds). On to the food. If your a fan of creative and unique rolls, this is a great place. The chef has great presentation skills on both rolls and nigiri, and I was even impressed with the order the rolls and nigiri arrived because they were thoughtful in their order, presentation and combinations. Don't expect the standard nigiri then rolls then check and leave. The meal is served with a sweeter miso and edamame as appetizers. Rolls and nigiri has come out in a different order each time. I particularly enjoy some of the spicier rolls, and the nigiri was especially good. I haven't tried any of the kitchen items from the place, but at some point when I'm craving Japanese good and not sushi, I will drop in. Also, they finish the order with ice cream. Yummy! I have a hard time trying to eat at a good asian place yet this is one of my top places. We stepped in and felt at ease with the cleanliness, the hospitality of the host, and colorful wall paintings and decorations. Personally, I love this place. I'm a pretty big fan of the sushi here. There are very few or just this place in Tucson, AZ where you can get truly fresh fish for sashimi everyday. I've been to many places around Tucson, sometimes it's fresh but often times on the other days it is truly questionable. Here the sushi is good and in my opinion the best is Tucson, AZ. As for their menu on Japanese foods, it isn't spectacular but it is pretty good. The food isn't gourmet but is definitely homey and delicious. As for their small Korean menu, I suggest you try the Korean Kimchi Tofu. Now that is something that will take you to Southern Bay Area's Korean restaurants. Sometimes the restaurant is very full, expect to exercise that patience you heard about from your mother, food is always better when you aren't angry, plus the service and staff and the sushi chef are so polite, friendly and nice. Still my favorite sushi in Tucson. I may miss the Uni, but their smaller menu is still great. Tonight there were 3 varieties of fish belly. I love to order the seaweed salad with spicy tuna on top. The service was a little slow to start with but the food came out quickly and it was delicious! Free edamame and miso soup to start which was great especially since we were all starving. I had the Caterpillar roll, Kazoku roll, and a California roll. Both of the specialty rolls were fantastic the California roll was okay but nothing to write home about. I went here for lunch during the week. First of all the exterior looks shady, but the interior is very nicely decorated. The ambiance is great. The service was prompt. I also really enjoyed the complimentary miso soup, edamame (about a cup's worth), and small scoop of plum ice cream. It really rounded out my meal! I had a spicy tuna roll, a specialty roll, and a house salad. The rolls were good - the fish tasted fresh, and the ingredients melded well together. Definitely skip the house salad - the dressing isn't as good as I've had at other Japanese restaurants, and it was just plain iceberg lettuce. It's soo fresh here. The service is good. Note I came in on Monday 1pm so it wasn't busy. I imagine if I came on a weekend the service may be slower. The sushi chef is very friendly.
