My favorite Pad Thai in town. I've eaten here several times and not once been disappointed. The prices are a little high, but for me it's very clear why, the quality is excellent and this is a local family owned business. We've tried at least a half dozen different dishes and several appetizers, and it's all been well seasoned and cooked. Service is great and take out is really well executed. The Old Port isn't exactly the easiest place to navigate for someone with mobility issues, but fun fact- Keg & Kraken has a handicap parking spot out front! We arrived on a Sunday at noon (opening time) and had the place to ourselves just about the whole time. Our waitress was super sweet. I started with a shrimp tempura roll and fried dumplings. I expected pan fried but theirs are deep fried. Both apps were great! Masaman Curry was my entree. It was so flavorful and filling. My best advice, eat dessert first! I'm not a dessert person but I snagged a bite of my sister's deep fried coconut ice cream and it's the BEST version of fried ice cream I've ever had. I have been ordering takeout from Keg & Kraken since they first opened, but the last three times have been a bit of a let down: 1. Despite ordering food in advance for a specific pick-up time, we've had to wait upwards of an hour standing in their tiny entrance (at their request). It's tough to stand around for that long waiting (only doing so because the staff kept telling us it was "almost ready"). 2. We've always gotten rice with the Yellow Curry and Massaman Curry (you can see in photos that so have others who've ordered these same dishes), but we did *not* when we last got them. When I asked them about it (thinking it was a simple mistake) I was told "some orders come with rice, some not". Their menu - in multiple places - even says these curries are "served with rice". But... I guess not anymore? 3. And, finally, in our most recent order, everything was undercooked: raw-on-the-inside potatoes, near-raw onions, and very hard carrots. I thought the first issue we experienced was a fluke, but now it's becoming a regular thing (and it's a bummer to spend $70ish and every time have something be not quite right). I think this all comes down to them being so busy they're maybe rushing to fulfill orders? I think it's great that they've got so many new and returning customers! Just - in my opinion - it's impacted the takeaway experience quite a bit compared to when they first started. I still think: 1. The spice levels are wonderful and they are generous with their portion sizes! 2. The abundance of vegan and gluten-free options are so thoughtful! For now, I'm on a break with Keg & Kraken, but I still recommend them! It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the drinks are delicious and you'll enjoy everything you order (... especially if you're not visiting on a weekend night). read more

On this #ThankfulThursday, I'd love to give a shout out to Keg and Kraken. I have nothing but positive things to say about this newly opened restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Portland. My partner and I went for dinner and we both left so happy! Dozens (or what felt like hundreds at one point) of Thai classics and other Asian dishes -- including sushi -- filled up their extensive food menu, while the drinks menu provided everything from beers to shareable bowls and tiki drinks. We had the Sugary Mai Tai Bowl and it was delicious. It was indeed sugary, but totally doable if you split it with someone. The spicy Chicken Pad Thai was packed with so many flavors and it definitely had a spicy kick to it. The Massaman Curry was simply amazing -- the rice was cooked to perfection, the chicken was tender, and the different aromas were prevalent. I could go a month just eating those two dishes. We also had crab rangoons (some of the best I've ever had) and tuna rolls with plenty of spicy mayo. A meal for two, with the gigantic drink bowl, one app, two sushi rolls, and two BIG entrees came out to around $100 after 20% gratuity. Today I had another splendid meal here. Really feels good to count this in a number of reliably excellent restaurants I can walk to for comfort food. Raspberry margarita - delicious and refreshing, though kind of also mostly a cup of ice. Duck breast wontons - like a pumped up version of crab rangoon. The cream cheese overpowers most of the flavors (as with rangoon) but the corn and the duck come through still. Pork belly yakitori - A heckin juicy piece of meat! Shishasmo (smelt) kushikatsu - crunchy af fried fish. I don't usually go in for whole fish, but the breading obscures that sense of what it really is. ends up being a beautifully fried mammoth fish stick. I mean that in the best way! Hamachi maki - The fish in this is so plump and juicy and delicious. Best part of the meal, as last time, was the sushi. I love trying different things, but I think this is really what they excel at (of course I've yet to try dive into the Thai half of the menu) And once again, such excellent, friendly service. Super fantastic first experience at Keg and Kraken. My husband and I headed there for an early dinner last Sunday. We got a table right away and ordered a Pain Killer to share. The drink was super well constructed with the perfect balance of rum, fruit juices and cream of coconut, so much so, that I immediately wished I had ordered one for myself. We ordered up a bunch of appetizers. chive cakes pan fried dumpling vegetable crispy rolls money bags All apps came together on a platter with two side sauces and were all 100% fantastic. My husband particularly loved the chive cakes and I LOVED the crispy rolls. After all of that we shared an order of orange chicken. It came with lots of crispy, panko fried chicken, rice and vegetables in the cleanest, realest orange sauce I have ever had!!! Really, really good. Came here at 10PM on a Friday night and they were still serving food! They have a late night kitchen and it smells so damn good. We got scallion pancake, pad Thai, and three types of veg sushi. Also the money bags app and a bigass shared drink. Holy crap. This food is insane. FRESH, crispy when it should be, full of flavor, and absolutely made with love. We had the best service ever (thanks Boom!), and the chef was so kind. Just opened this week where benkay used to open. Thai & sushi + yakitori are their main dishes. Ordered crispy duck wonton very creamy and delicious. Pad Thai noodles are **chewy** taste so good, sweet and spicy . It has 8 shrimps in the fish. Red curry is yummy, rich coconut curry flavor. My hubby wants udon, it was yummy, udon is chewy cooked perfectly (not too soft). Tempura batter is thin and crispy. Papayas salad has two shrimps on top, lots of papaya sweet and sour with lime juice red pepper I give 4 stars because we didn't try the sushi or any appetizers yet, until next time we will be back for sure. read more

What is a delightful little gem in downtown Portland. We visited late on a Sunday evening when it wasn't too busy and were seated swiftly. The restaurant was very clean and has a nice ambiance. The menu offered a solid selection of cocktails, including tiki bar drinks, in addition to beer, sake, and other standard fare. The ginger pear martini is a can't miss. The owner, Boom, was very attentive and helpful in answering questions. It was wonderful conversing with her, and she explained that she sometimes sources the spices they cook with from Thailand herself. We sampled the money bag appetizer, tom kha soup, pad Thai with crispy chicken, yellow curry, and Thai fried rice. All were delicious! I also really wanted unfiltered Sake (Nigori) and they were out of both brands on menu. I was told by the server that they are very popular. If it is very popular I would think they would stock accordingly. I say this a a former service professional and bar manager. I did order hot sake that came lukewarm. Second strike was the soup. I ordered some dumpling soup and it had the same problems as the Bulgogi. Pure chili, no complexity of flavor. Third and final strike was the orange chicken. The chicken was incredibly dry, and the flavor was not what you would expect from orange chicken and if you are craving that classic orange chicken flavor you will be sorely disappointed. The best Thai place in Portland. The service is fantastic every time. They are incredibly friendly and welcoming. There is the natural brick and rafters which they have accented with modern black light fixtures, unique wall art, and an iconic large clock. The tables often have fresh flowers, candles, and fun centerpieces. The drinks are also garnished with flowers and are tropical and vibrant. It makes me feel as though I'm on vacation or something. All the food is delicious, hot and fresh. The freshest beef I may have ever eaten was some beef skewers from Keg and Kraken. I'm from Nebraska; I've had Omaha steak in Omaha, I have no idea how they got fresher cuts than that but it was amazing and tender. Both there curry and sushi are excellent choices. Fantastic American Thai food. I order the chicken basil sauce dish. Well balanced with a sweet, sour, salty, and spicy basil sauce. Chicken was soft and moist. My table also ordered the Massaman curry, which was well liked. The cook came out and spoke to us for 10 minutes talking to us. Very kind. She insisted on thai iced tea's on the house. Absolutely adored this place! It wasn't crowded at all, though it deserves to be. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant, with the brick walls and big wooden beams of an old Portland building. The server was attentive and friendly; my water was never empty. And my god, the food!!!! I've had Thai food all across the country, and this really stands out. The servings were the perfect size, large enough to get your moneys worth, but not so large that you're eating leftovers for 3 days. We ordered scallion pancakes and tempura vegetables to start, followed by fried chicken skin, volcano chicken, Larb Gai salad, and a Salmon Lovers sushi roll. Everything was perfection! The fried items were fried perfectly, not too much batter or oil, but still satisfying. And the spice was enough for flavor, but not so much that your mouth is on fire. We enjoyed every bite, and the 3 of us cleared our plates. They also have a decent selection of sake, beer, wine & cocktails available. My only complaints are disposable napkins & chop sticks, and paper towels in the bathroom. These might seem like small things, but disposable items used resources to manufacture and create waste that polluted our environment and produces greenhouse gases. Regardless, everyone should support this wonderful restaurant with its delectable food!! This place just opened. The owner is a sweetheart. The sushi is amazing. I think they curry was super good but didn't need cherry tomatoes in it, and the potatoes could've been cooked slightly longer. All the appetizers were amazing as well, I think my favorite was the money bags. We will go again, and I think takeout would be good as well.
