I was very hopeful, excited even, because I am not an adventurous eater but had decided to check this place out - and the fact that it was next door to Portland Stage made it seem perfect. We walked in - the only two people in the place at lunch time - on a Sunday. Our server was very good, fast and efficient. The food was hot - it just didn't have much flavor. We shared a soup with coconut milk and chicken, pineapple fried rice, pork egg rolls and fried chicken dumplings. Again, not horrible, just not great. read more

Nice little Thai restaurant for good price and portion size. Waitress was very helpful, on the menu they only have the dinner price, but you can ask for any of the entrees in the smaller size (lunch option). The food in the picture is the lunch size and it's still a lot! Interior design of the restaurant was decent, some of the chairs and tables need to be updated, but the designs on the wall were nice and the plants as well gave a nice outdoor vibe. The dish I had was shrimp with stir fried garlic and black pepper, spice level was a 3 out of 5 I believe. Amazing homely Thai food. Was in the mood for Asian food and we walked into this place. Expected more restaurant-like Thai food but this was incredible- got the lemongrass stir fry, good spice, tasted great and also seemed super healthy. The fried rice was solid as well. I ordered the chive dumplings and the pad see ew with scallops. I found both dishes to be fairly average for the Portland Thai food scene. The dumplings were mushy and soft despite being pan fried, and the scallops were on the dry side. However, the prices were very reasonable and the service quick, if kind of distant. I got the feeling they haven't had much dine in business post-COVID, and like many other places grew accustomed to being takeout only. Just conjecture. The restaurant was nearly empty, there were flickering lights, kind of an odd choice of music (country/western), and no drinks menu. The food was filling and enjoyable, but I think Thai Taste and Mekong on Forest Ave remain my top choices for Thai food in Portland thus far. read more

We are so incredibly happy that we found Sabieng! What a hidden gem in little ol' Portland. It's Friday night and we were craving Thai food for take-out. We wanted something authentic, fast, and - honestly - cheap. Let's just say that Sabieng met all of those check boxes, and more. We called about 40 mins before they closed, and the kindest woman answered the phone and took our order. We ordered a lot of food; (2) crab rangoons, (2) pork dumplings, curry puff, Thai fish cake, drunken noodles, and drunken fried rice. The total was around $60, truly an amazing deal for the amount of food we got. When we arrived to pick up the food, we fell in love with the little restaurant. Although as of this review they are doing take-out only, I hope they open dine in soon. The food was incredible. The drunken noodles were amazing, although the "mild" spice level wasn't too spicy, so just keep that in mind if you like spicy food. The pork dumplings were also delicious. The only thing I wouldn't order again would be the drunken fried rice. It wasn't bad or anything, but I was just expecting more flavor! New Thai food favorite in Portland! Authentic and tasty with respectable portion sizes. We came around 1pm on Sunday and were the only ones in the restaurant. Definitely not a fancy place but clean and quiet. Great service and everything came out very quickly. The curry puffs came out almost immediately and were reminiscent of an Indian potato samosa with the classic Thai sweet chili dipping sauce. Next out was the vegetable drunken noodles 3*. Pretty spicy but very tasty. Finally was the orange chicken 2*. Also delicious not too sweet with notes of real orange. Overall excellent experience and very reasonable prices- will be coming back to try more :) read more

Tucked down this side street of Portland you'll find this small gem of a restaurant called Sabieng. Seating was available in this spacious room but we opted to take our dinner back to our room. We began coming here in 2018 after we moved to Portland from South Berwick. The inside is clean and simple. The owners are friendly and very attentive. We never have to wait to seat and always felt at home in this very humble restaurant. We love the curries! My wife will usually get the green curry with tofu and I get the red with chicken. Fresh and plentiful! When my daughter visits she always gets a peanut dish with tofu. Price is very reasonable. Now the best part - is this consistent? Yes. Had a great lunch of Tom Yum soup and green curry fried rice (basically basil fried rice.) it wasn't too expensive and the flavors were more well balanced than a lot of other Thai places I've been in Maine. We went to several restaurants and couldn't get in. We passed this little place and there was no one seated at any table. Uh-oh, we thought..... but we were hungry, so in we went. It's a nice place. It's neat and comfortable. So we ordered sake and a beer, curry puffs, chive dumplings, duck with ginger and vegetables for my wife, and stir fried veggies for me. The food was all very good...not necessarily authentic, but nice all the same. By the time we left after 90 minutes, there wasn't a spare table in the place. Our first concerns were baseless. It's a good place with nice food. Our only worry was that no one took any dirty plate or glass away from the table. So by the time we finished, the table looked a complete mess. However, this is a really nice place and we would not hesitate to return. read more

Really great Thai food. We are visiting from out of town and ordered take-out because we're staying at the Westin (very convenient). But this was excellent Thai food that we'd happily drive across town for even if it wasn't convenient. Our first choice for dining on this evening was Empire on the corner of Congress and Forest; however, there was a 75 minute wait. We were starving so decided to see what was nearby and saw the Yelp rating of 4 stars for Sabieng which is in sight of Empire. Upon arrival, there was only one table of 3 occupied so we were greeted by a very nice lady (who may be the owner?) and seated in front of the window. She filled our water glasses immediately and provided menus. We decided to start with the steamed pork dumplings and wonton soup as we perused the menu. Our waiter (also the greeter) returned to take our orders: the chicken ginger wok stir-fry and the Sabieng Combo but I asked if the combo could be made with shrimp and scallops vs. the chicken, pork and beef (as described in the menu) and our waiter happily obliged. The starters arrived shortly and we were impressed by how "not salty" both were which is typically the experience with most asian food establishments. We were off to a good start! The pork dumplings were excellent, outer wrap not too doughy and filling very flavorful. The wonton soup was also very good. 4 stars for the starters. The entrees arrived shortly after we finished our starters and we were a disappointed that both dishes were very salty. The chicken ginger more so than the combo. The combo included 4 small-medium shrimp and "pieces" of scallop. Only one scallop seemed to be intact, the rest were either small chunks or sliced like water chestnut. 2 stars for the entrees. Our waiter was very friendly and checked on us several times during our starter and dinner but after having cleared the plates, my water glass was empty and I had to ask for a refill when she walked by. Total tab excluding tip was around $38. OK but not outstanding. Really an overall 2.5 star experience. During the hour we were there, only two other tables were occupied ... how odd that about 200 feet away, you couldn't even get a table? read more

For some reason, I've ignored this place my entire life. The other night, we tried out Acrossair (iPhone augmented reality app) and gave this place a shot--best. decision. ever. The Pad Thai was firm, not gross and gummy at the center, with a spice that was subtle but very, very present. The spring rolls were PERFECT--not sticky, not overstuffed. And as a bonus, we got egg rolls and crab rangoons free! I usually don't like rangoons, but these were light and crisp, and filled with more crab than cream cheese, which is a surprise. read more

TL;DR: if you go to this place solo and notice it's empty, just get the food to go. Food is delicious but service is mediocre at best. The green curry might be one of the best I've had and I've almost finished all of it, which rarely happens because at other places, the same meal tends to feel heavier. I travel for work and have had my fair share of bizarre restaurant experiences but this one compelled me to write a review because I am still dumbfounded. I went to this restaurant because of the reviews/ratings on Yelp and was very excited because I love good Thai food. I get to the restaurant and I'm the only person there - no big deal, it's a Wednesday night in the winter before a snowstorm is set to arrive. However, the lady working seemed annoyed by my presence. I sat down with the intention of eating in the restaurant until I hear the impatient clicking of a pen, the lady walking over, annoyed I asked for a wine list, and just asks me if I'm ready to order. No pleasantries whatsoever. That's fine. What caused me to eventually just ask for my order to go is she came over, seemingly annoyed, and just asks if I'm over 21... and walks away. I guess that's one way to "check" IDs. By this point, I'm super uncomfortable and just feel like I'm not wanted in there at all. Got my food to go (still tipped 20%) and it was delicious. I'm sure it would've been better if I didn't have to improvise in my hotel room by eating out of a paper cup with plastic utensils but c'est la vie. It's a shame because I saw they had fried bananas for desert which is one of my favorites but I had to get out of there. All of this being said, I have worked in restaurants (and still do) for 13+ years. Maybe she was having a bad and/or "off" day - I don't know - but I won't be going back for a sit down meal next time I'm in the area. read more

This is small authentic Thai restaurant located in the downtown area. This is a great place to go for lunch as you could easily get out of there for $10 or less per a person, but is a little pricier for dinner. The dinner price point is about $15 per person without drinks and begins at 3pm. The food is decent and is not as greasy or oily as cheap Thai food can be. The dishes tend to be lighter on vegetables than I would like. We ordered the spring rolls, drunken noodles and panang curry. None of the dishes were standouts, but all were decent. The drunken noodles were not very drunk. The chef has a light hand with the sauces. They did however customize the spiciness of our dishes upon request. The best Thai takeout in Portland. We used to be weekly regulars and still make an effort to go anytime we make it into the city. I almost always get the pad see ew and it's one of my favorite meals in the world. I haven't found anyone who makes it better. Very high on my comfort food list. I've had pad see ew at countless other places and can't tell you how often I've eaten dried out, pasty noodles stuck together in one big tangled mass, tossed with sauce. I've never had this experience at Sabieng for as long as I've been going there. The noodles are always fresh and tender. This is a pretty big deal for me. This attention to detail is typical of their food. Everything is very flavorful and tastes fresh. You can tell they put great care into their work. The service is extremely warm and friendly. I've seen complaints about it being slow, but have never had a problem in this area. If you don't have the patience to wait for quality food prepared by a nice local family, then, I don't know, maybe go to the mall or something. Also try the dumplings. Not great food presentation, but we have eaten in probably 100 thai restaurants, and this food had a lovely homemade flavor that crept up on you. As we ate both dishes, it just got more and delicious. We had haddock a la bhankok which was haddock in curry sauce with brocolli and green beans. It was outrageous. This is my go-to place for Thai food in Portland. It's small, tucked away, and always seems to be empty, but the food is great. After about a dozen trips here, I have yet to be disappointed. Love the drunken noodles in particular- they'll make them nice and spicy if you ask, and the portion size is large and filling. The pad thai is also a solid choice. When I feel like being extra full, I'll go for the mango sticky rice dessert. The service has always been fantastic, too. The waitress recognized us on our second visit, several weeks later, which left us super impressed. The third time, she even remembered our previous orders. And aside from the first Friday of the month, which gets crowded due to the art walk, the food always comes out really fast. As for the food, I'm actually surprised by how many great reviews this place has gotten. I thought their Tom Yum Goong was okay, not the greatest I've had, but still had that nice balance of savory and sour. Their appetizers - spring rolls, dumplings, and crab rangoons were good. 4 stars for the food, but 2 stars for the service. This place is small and I never knew it was there until recently. My drunken noodle was spicy and flavorful. The portion size was decent as well. I really want to go back and get the pork dumplings again but have them fried instead of steamed. They were very tender and tasty. The dumpling dough wasn't heavy like others I've had before. My real issue with this place is the service or rather the lack of service. The woman was super adorable and attentive in the beginning. After she brought out our food we never saw her again. I love Thai food so it's easy to please me in this department, but where most Thai places fall short (dining atmosphere and personality) this place succeeds. The dining room is pleasant and doesn't feel at all like a cheap take-out joint. There are nice tables and chairs, and nice dinnerware. The nicest surprise was how pleasant our server was. Despite rough English she engaged us in a lovely conversation about our family, all the while with a sincere smile on her face. A very authentic, wonderful person. Of course, the food. We usually like Pad Thai but decided to experiment a little and go with crunchy Pad Thai. It was expertly done with just the right amounts of noodles, sprouts, sauce, and a fair amount of medium sized shrimp. My whole family loved it (2 had shrimp and 1 had chicken.). I have been looking for a good Thai place in Portland for quite a while now, and I have been pretty disappointed with options until now. The food here was amazing. I had the Pad-See-Ewe with Tofu, Spicy Level 4...it may very well have been the best Pad-See-Ewe dish I've ever had. We also started with the crab rangoons, which were delicious. Unlike other Thai restaurants, where the dish is mostly a throw-away app with deep-fried cream cheese, this was light, not greasy at all, and full of crab. The service was wonderful! The woman who served us was very friendly, and very attentive. She definitely wanted to make our experience as enjoyable as possible. The soup was very flavorful and the egg rolls were so good with the sweet and sour sauce. I enjoyed my meal and would likely return. I'd give this place a 3.5 stars if that were an option. The positive: The atmosphere was comfortable and clean, and our server was very friendly. We didn't have to wait to be seated at 6:30pm on a Tuesday evening. The food was tasty. The less positive: While the flavors were good there was nothing unique to set the dishes apart from other local Thai spots. The portion sizes were on the small size. We didn't leave hungry, but none of the four of us (all women) took home leftovers. Our meals came out staggered about 7 or 8 minutes apart, which is a big pet peeve of mine. I'd always rather wait a little longer and be served at the same time as my dining partners. Sabieng is right down the street from my office, so I decided to pop in for lunch yesterday. I walked into the restaurant around noon and it was dead - no one was there except for one waitress and the kitchen staff. I was invited to take a seat at one of the window tables and ordered pad thai with flank steak. In short, it was delicious! The portion was large for lunch time (enough so that I have leftovers for today!) and the service was quick. Within 10 minutes of walking into the restaurant, I was eating lunch. I look forward to going back and trying more items off the menu again as what I had was great. My only complaint was that the restaurant had a funky smell...it was definitely a spice that I could not put my finger one, but it hit you a little bit when you walked in. I eventually got used to it, but I'd recommend they open their door and let fresh air in during the summer months. My husband and I were on a food crawl recently in Portland and happened upon this place. The owners were extremely nice and the place very clean. My husband had this divine chicken soup with a coconut broth and we split the green tofu curry. The curry had the perfect amount of heat and everything had great flavor.
