Went to Kells Kreme in Swampscott on August 3rd at 7:00 pm. Very strange experience. The only redeeming quality is the actual taste of the ice cream. Presentation is a ZERO, just a complete mess. The kid who took my order didn't listen to me at all when I was speaking and I had to repeat the order three times. After he took it he walked away and sat down on top of a freezer legs spread and all while watching something on his phone. Came here after walking the beach with a couple of friends. We ordered the Chicago, Texas, taco hot dogs. All the buns were toasted in a Panini press. My friends enjoyed their hot dogs and I liked the Texas hot dog. Even with the chili, bacon and cheese, it wasn't overly salty. However, I believe adding a crunchy or something with vinegar would have balanced it out more. We also shared a banana bucket with strawberry, chocolate, and the peanut butter and caramel coffee ice cream. I was very happy that we shared the bucket as it was humongous. Confusing service experience because they were super nice about letting me sample flavors. I finally chose blueberry pie, kiddie size, which is huge! But I asked for a topping, paid for it, and then told me "we ran out of it, have a nice day". As in - "thanks for paying already, we won't offer you an alternative". Weird? This one got a little weird. We were looking for Popo's old fashioned hot dogs and were told this USED to be where to find them but it was now another location of Revere Beach based Kells Kreme ice cream stand. However upon further inspection you could still get Popo's hot dogs there with the hot dog stand located to the rear of the building...confused? So was I. The setup, especially being a hotspot for a busy beach crowd, is ludicrous. First, the doors push inward versus puling outward and the ordering counter is dead ahead. With only a small group at the counter there was not enough space for me to even open the door. The order taking is a bit chaotic as the line forms in 2 totally separate spots. Craziest of all, even tho the hot dog stand is accessible to order at, you place your order at the front but then have to walk over to the hot dog dude to get it...whatever. The dogs were really good even tho they screwed the pooch on my toppings. The soft serve was decent. I have a real issues with places with illogical set ups. It's annoying and leads to people getting pissed off because of inadvertent cutting etc. I know sometimes when a new business takes over a new building you play the hand you're dealt but hell, I'm the least handy person on earth and I know I could replace the doors to open in a logical way read more

Truly don't know what's up with these terrible ratings. We came because it had good Google reviews when we looked for ice cream in this area and I was shocked to later find such bad reviews here on my trusty Yelp. We ordered 3 hot dogs, 2 plain with mustard (they offer 3 types of mustard)/ketchup/relish, a New York dog; and a Reese's Razzle (chocolate soft serve ice cream blended with Reese's cups). The toasted buns were fresh and delicious, and the hot dogs themselves had great flavor. The single thing we'd have changed was that the hot dogs could have been served warmer. They were training a new employee and I overheard the trainer telling him to fill the ice cream as high as it could go, it's better to lose a little bit from the mixer than serve the customer a smaller portion - nice to hear that's how they view things. Service was great and prompt, food was tasty, soft serve was excellent, and our total was about $16. It's a summer ice cream and hot dog place, rate it on that. read more

Ditsy slow staff and one was rather rude... Looks like with this summer's staff, Popo's is becoming a Nono... *Update... Get home and there's only 6 hotdogs... So let's break this down... I ordered 7 hotdogs in total giving them a detailed list on a clean piece of paper in very clear writing and they manage to take awhile punching that in repeatedly having to ask what buttons were for what... Once that was punched in I was asked if that were for here or to go... I clearly came in by myself and had already mentioned that I was just there fetching the food... When I questioned that remark, I was laughed off... I paid the total and stepped aside... There was hardly anybody there so it wasn't like it was rushed or anything... I was then asked to pay for another hotdog as she didn't punch them all in... Awaiting a call from the "General Manager" as "Brianna" the manager who was there tonight was unable to process a refund apparently... Honestly very disappointed in my visit yesterday. To start off I was unwelcomely greeted by about 5 girls who are all huddled in the back corner by the hot dogs on their cell phones, it took about 4 minutes for them to actually realize they had a customer, the ice cream was OK, but I wasn't very impressed because it seems when they scoop they don't wear gloves and their hands almost always touch the ice cream. My 4 year old niece requested a kiddie vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and banana slices....right after the words "banana slices" left her mouth, the awkward teen who took our order looked at us as if we were growing an extra arm out of our foreheads. We see his stress levels elevate and a bead of sweat run down his face. Not knowing what this "foreign order" of simple banana slices on top of ice cream, he panicked and looked over to his coworker for desperate advice. The coworker, as useless as she also looked, was bewildered by the foreign request of simple banana slices on top of ice cream, and also claimed it to be "store policy" to not peel a banana unless it was for a banana sundae. (Or apparently unless it was for a life or death situation). It got to the point where a simple request for banana slices needed the urgent attention and decision making from the current floor manager, a decision none of the baffled, prepubescent, ice cream scooping staff were capable of making. In the end, we had to let our 4 year old niece that she couldn't have banana slices on top of her ice cream, so she just had to settle with vanilla and rainbow sprinkles. Ordered an Oreo razzle and a small mint chip ice cream in a cup with chocolate sprinkles. The razzle came HALF filled. After I asked if she could fill it up more she filled it about 3/4 of the way. If that was all it wouldn't be so bad. Instead of a small I got a kiddie. Instead of mint chip I got peppermint paddy. No chocolate sprinkles. After asking for the sprinkles she was "kind" enough to put some on the ice cream. I say "some" because it seemed almost intentional the way the sprinkles were put on so that more ended up on the outside of the cup than the ice cream. This place needs 1 adult working per shift, that's all. The person in charge can't be 16 years old. Any one mistake above I can look the other way. But all of them at once is too much. I live down the street and come here a lot during the summer. I've never left a bad review, but usually the bad service is not worth leaving a comment. I only got ice cream, but they have other food there as well. I took a little walk down to the shoreline by myself the other day and decided to get some ice cream. To my utter delight, they serve Richardson's, to my utter disappointment, they didn't have the plain chocolate out at the moment. Ugh. Who doesn't have plain chocolate out?! It's probably the most popular besides vanilla. I just wanted to ask if they could go steal a scoop out of it from the back, but alas, I did not. So instead of my usual, I opted for a mint with chocolate sundae because they had real fudge. I got a mini sundae and boy was it plentiful! I actually could not finish it. They were also heavy handed with the fudge, which helped to fill me up. Even though it wasn't what I initially wanted, I was pleased with the yummy sundae. There was a tv on with the cooking network on, so I enjoyed sitting there eating comfortably. I was really disappointed at their choice to keep the chocolate out back, and while I was trying to order I was stuck behind a door and feared for my life as kids came busting in (a little dramatic, but you get the picture). This place has made me so angry, I'm still not over it. As far as the hot dogs themselves....they're fine. But the reason I'm doing one star is because I was in there this afternoon with my 4 year old. We got hot dogs, ate them there, then she had to go the bathroom before leaving. We were told "we've closed the bathroom to our customers".......ummmmm what?!? A) that's illegal. You serve food and have tables, encouraging people to eat in your establishment. You need a bathroom. I'm a regular customer who likes this place because it is a top shelf ice cream parlor. Kell's has a top selection of hard and soft serve ice cream, including Dole Whip. If you have been to Disney World you know good that is. I don't let the line out the door sway me because I have to taste it myself and can tell you that the ice cream is delicious and the portions are huge. They also have a great selection of grilled hot dogs that rival those of Kelly's Roast Beef. Prices are reasonable and the staff is always friendly and helpful. read more
