I walked in with an AmeriCorps group for our end of the year service trip. When we walked in a comment was made that "this isn't a cafeteria" we waited and no one took our order or even given menus.the waitress, Nicole, ignored us until we asked for menus. We were turned away from the bar when trying to get a drink. I approached the bar to ask how long everything would take because of time constraints with travel back to our service sites and I overheard Nicole complaining about our group. The waitress rolled her eyes at me turned to the "manager" at the bar and explained rudely again that we were under time constraints. We felt completely humiliated, hurt and discriminated against when other were happily served and had to leave. I do not recommend going here because of poor customer service and the attitudes we immediacy encountered in general. read more

Typical Irish pub style establishment with reliable mainstay beers and a typical get-drunk atmosphere. The first main floor has the live entertainment and bar while the lower level has a dance floor you can jive on (or laugh at the drunkards trying to). The worst place I've ever been to in terms of service. First, The waiter sat us at the entrance when there were many empty tables. He was mean and rude all the time. When I ordered food, he asked me several times to repeat the order. Finally, he brought two beers instead of one. I told him that I have ordered one only and he went to the table next to us and put the beer there saying "merry Christmas". Very disappointing and unpleasant experience overall. read more

I wanted to like this place SO much better than I actually did. We love places like this! Even with the reviews all over the board, I feel like we normally tend to get lucky in terms of service/food. I suppose everyone's luck has to run out at some point though! Came here on a Friday night before the Caps game. I figured an Irish cop bar HAD to be visited while we were in DC, and we could grab a bite to eat without paying for outrageously priced food at the arena. He got the buffalo chx sandwich and tots - I thought the tots had an odd flavor, greasy, but not good greasy like I expect from bar food. I got a burger and could only eat half of it...I don't know what they season their meat with, and I LOVE a good burger- but this one was just yuck. It honestly tasted like they cook EVERYTHING they serve in the same area/pot/what-have-you...blergh. Fries were overly seasoned with I don't even know what. When we first walked in, we had to track someone down to direct us where to sit (bar was crowded already), and get us menus, and even then it was like talking to a brick wall - the dude had NO idea what was going on. Irish Times = DIVE. But there's nothing wrong with that! It's a fun spot with lots of hill rats. Definitely a good place if you're on the hill and looking to get a drink at a place that's really laid back. You can't get much more casual than this in DC. It's near a lot of the convention centers and what not so you'll find some people dressed all hoity toity but trust me, they didn't leave home thinking, "I'm going to the Irish Times tonight, better put on my nice shoes and sport coat." read more

I love this place. Jeans and T-shirt, happy drinkers, no-BS, good Times. Reminds me of my favorite bar in college. New Year's, St. Patty's Day are particularly entertaining. The staff is ultra-friendly, and pretty damn funny if you pay attention. I've always met interesting people here---attorneys, college kids, employees of OTHER bars, etc. It's the one place in DC that I always recommend to friends coming into town---with NO mental reservations at all. I work across the street, my co-works and I often find ourselves stopping by for a drink or 10. We've come to know a lot of the staff and it just feels like home. It's a place where anything could happen depending on the night and who happens to be in town. The food is traditional pub-grub with a couple Irish classics mixed in. Irish Times was great for late, late night drinks. But it's never the first or second place I hit when going out. I never eat the food. One night, when leaving really late, I walked out the front of the bar and saw mice chasing each other next to the outside wall. Couldn't bring myself to eat there after that moment. I am a first time customer. I have not had corned beef cabbage in years. I tried it at Kelly's Irish Times. The corned beef was tender and the cabbage, potatoes, and carrots were cooked perfectly. The only complaint for me is the meal was a little bland. I prefer more seasonings on my food. I am used to the peppercorns, allspice and bay leaves in my corned beef and cabbage. I could barely taste any seasonings. All in all it has other things on the menu which I will try. I will come back. It also has a great bar and a pleasant bar tender named Sean. read more

When I lived on 16th Street in a past life, this was one of my favorite places to go. Mind you, I was two blocks away from the alcohol-laden mecca that is Adams Morgan. The Irish Times is different. This place has tiny tables dressed in picnic-cloth red-and-white gingham (plastic, of course, for easy spill wipeage); small, wobbly chairs; dark wood paneling; very knowledgeable and friendly bartenders; and for some reason frequently has more than ample lighting - an unusual choice for what at times can be a beergoggle haven. A friend and I used to go with a deck of cards and drink and play the night away. Yes, I'm a dork, I know. But I think in some ways that really speaks to the kind of place it is - no one really even looked at us twice. Sometimes the people there were cool, and sometimes it was more fun to play cards and act like we were in a very loud living room with tiny, wobbly chairs. One more reason I have only the fondest of memories of this place: When I managed a restaurant very close to this place, one of the guys (I think their head bartender or something) used to bring us donuts on a nearly weekly basis. Not sure why, but I sure did like him for it. Wait, does that mean that this review was motivated by bribery? (Disclaimer: the final line of this review was intended for entertainment purposes only. What a scary experience. My wife and I were in the area for my sister's graduation and went downstairs to grab a beer. The nachos with pork were the best. The service is great - super fast and attentive. I came with a group for lunch that only had a limited amount of time and our waiter hustled and got 15 orders in and out quickly, then wrapped mine to go. Great place for a quick, affordable bite to eat. read more

Four stars because President Reagan loved this place. They lose a star because the bartender was talking on his Bluetooth the whole time. One of my favorite dive bars. Older brother used to sneak in in the 1970s when he went to Gonzaga, then I started sneaking in in the 1980s, and the place is identical. Greasy food that tastes great after you've been drinking for hours, but you don't really come here to eat. Skanky enough to keep most of the tourists and stroller crowd away, yet conveniently located near the Metro so you can stumble home. And unlike a certain other Irish place nearby, the servers don't put their friends drinks on your tab then claim "the computer never makes mistakes." It's a riot on the weekends, so if you like lots of drunken noise, that's when you come. I still enjoy stopping by after a Sunday morning stroll around the Mall for a quiet pint. read more

I'm a big fan of Kelly's Irish Times. Don't take yourself too seriously when you walk through the doors and you'll be just fine. If your soul needs pretension rather than an escape from it, go next door. Bartenders and servers remember repeat customers quickly and are generous. You never know the sorts of conversations you'll end up having as the place attracts all sorts of folks from barflies to cops to law students to Maryland & Virginia commuters and tourists from around the country and world. Just the other day a guy from Washington State had his collection of pen and ink drawings of lakes strewn over the bar, signing one and giving it away to someone who he just met. Service wasn't too great as staff seemed to be enjoying the game much more than making sure we were getting a re-fill on our pitchers. Had to ask for water 3 times before getting it. And, I know it's a dive bar and who can really expect good food but this was awful. All 4 of my fries were dry and mealy, smoked turkey club was made with the cheapest ingredients ever (Kraft single slice cheese-they really can't do better than that?). I've had much better bar fare elsewhere (Tunnicliff's) for the same price. Sandwich was only $8 but was definitely not worth that The worst of it is we saw a MOUSE casually walking across the floor and when I told the waiter about it, he said, "yep, i know, there's construction going on nearby." (is that any excuse?) "We've been trying to catch him for awhile but we have already caught quite a few." (should I be happy about that? Is that reassuring?). Eww. Fine if you want a dive bar. We wanted food, sat at a table, had to flag down a waitress, and then wait 10 minutes to get our beers (were never brought waters). She dumped off our beers and ran away without asking if we wanted food. So we waited. She finally came to take our order, left, came back because she forgot what we ordered. Brought our food. Got my order WRONG, which she never came back to check on, so I had to go find her and tell her she brought me the wrong thing. By the time I received my food, my husband's food was cold. They comped us a beer, but it was not worth it. If you are hungry, look elsewhere. read more

This place is hilarious. Friends and I have had some ridiculous nights there recently. I have not been downstairs, partly because I'm a little afraid after hearing stories, and reading these reviews and partly because I never make it because I'm having so much fun upstairs. This place is amazing ! We were in DC for a short weekend and stopped in for a few drinks . The bartenders were very sociable & made us feel at home. The regulars we met were great people, too. What makes me love this place the most is I left my favorite leather jacket there and they mailed it to me. I live in LA, and they found the jacket I left at the seat and took time to send it out. I just got it today ! Furthermore, I offered to pay for shipping but they didn't even ask me to pay. I will definitely swing by there each time I am in DC. Not a lot of places would do that for you . It is truly an Irish/cop/dive bar but it serves its purpose well. Also much better (and more real) than the next door competitor. The food is only so-so but you really want to come here for the drinking. The servers are a little amateurish but good natured and fairly efficient. They also accommodate groups well (sometimes too well if you're seated next to a bunch of drunk Hill interns). If you're from Boston or New York this is probably as close to a home town dive experience as you'll get here in PowerTown. read more

Wow. We were going to go next door to The Dubliner, but they were closed for a private party. Lucky us! The calimari was outstanding. Light and not greasy. I had the fish and chips. It was delicious. This place is as authentic as they come (in DC). The all-you-can-drink Saturday event is rarely crowded, but always worth a shot. Bartenders are quick, friendly, and the beer selection is pretty good even for an Irish bar. Haven't tried the food, but the live entertainment (a guy playing whatever you request) is also a nice bonus. Worth a shot if you're in Union Station want to avoid anything east of North Capital Street. read more
