I've been wanting to try this place for awhile, but they'd always be closed! I finally came when they were opened (Wednesday evening! yay!) I ordered the Miso Butterfish at the bento shop. They cook their entree dishes at the main restaurant next door. My order did take a bit longer than intended, but it's ok we're in Hawaii. The container was filled with a large portion of white rice and the miso butterfish. Wished it came with less rice and maybe a side of steamed veggies. The miso butterfish was so good and moist! The bento shop is small. Most people just order takeout. There are a few tables inside and outside! You can order your food online or directly at the shop! There are sooo many options on the menu! It's very overwhelming if you're indecisive like me! haha The owner, Jordan, was so nice and friendly! She gave my friend and I so many items after to take home with us because they were closing for the week!! She gave us bento boxes and sushi rolls, and a lava slushie drink! Good Japanese place known for bento boxes located in a strip mall near the Longs Pharmacy. Keep in mind they only serve the bento boxes for lunch. Otherwise, it's a bit pricey but food is pretty average, nothing special. read more

This place is small but mighty . We arrived when the kitchen closed until 4pm. But we were still able to purchase bento boxes. They were very fresh and flavorful! I would go back if we were staying in the areas bit longer. If you are in the area I recommend stopping in. As we were eating so many people were checking to see if they were open and were upset they just missed out. I will be back for sure! read more

I've never been to a bento box shop before. Me and my brother have always wanted to. There isn't a bento shop back on the mainland, where we live. My family needed a quick dinner to-go, and happened to hear about Kenichi Bento Box. Kenichi Bento Box is located inside a shopping mall strip. The owner is very sweet, and I loved the decor inside. Prices are reasonable and the boxed bentos are kept warm. You can take your bento outside and eat while enjoying the Hawaii sunshine. The ingredients for each dish is local and fresh. The chicken katsu curry was OK. The chicken was tender and the rice was fluffy. The curry was disappointing though. There's no spice and it was more like gravy. I HATE gravy. I look forward to trying more dishes in the future, IF we come back to Hawaii. read more

The service and ambience were great, but the food was pretty mediocre. The sashimi was bland, but the fried fish and shrimp tempura were okay. The miso soup was nice and hot, but the rice was cold. The pickles were nice and tasty. New owners. Much larger menu. Not the same exceptional quality of the previous owners but still good. However, on the second visit, I ordered chicken pho and when the order came out, the bean sprouts were obviously very very old and Brown. When I said something to the hostess , the owner's wife, she said oh they came out of a fresh package as if to say they're fine. A little later the owner came by and I showed them to him and his remark was oh so you don't like bean sprouts. Yikes the lack of customer service and recognizing a real issue was astounding. Most people come here for the bentos, but little do they know, that the fish n chips... BRAH! Some people rave about banana bread. And that's cool. But the FISH N CHIPZ....BRAH!!! Casual, delicious, and affordable. We frequented this spot because it was so easy to pick n choose which bento to get and service was really great! We got salmon and miso cod and it came with multiple sides. My lil one loved the miso cod and noodles :) I'm not the type who likes to sit around waiting for food (unless it's sooo amazing), so this was the perfect fit as each day we just needed something healthy, fast, and delish whilst on our way to the next adventure! Before I get into the food, can I just comment on how tidy and modern this location is? I'm not sure how long the bento side has been open, but it sits in a quaint little space just makai of Kenichi Pacific restaurant (which I am also excited to try) at the Keauhou Shopping Center. I've eaten more than my share of bento growing up, and as a native of Kona (living on O'ahu for most my life), Kenichi's is one of the best by far. In fact, Kona is now home to two of my favorite bento boxes....Teshima's and Kenichi's. Ordered the combo with saba, salmon, nishime, a few sides, and rice three ways. Although the portions looked small, it was surprisingly filling. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING was prepared almost to perfection, especially their nishime (which is not easy to execute). Their curry also packed a ton of flavor! Presentation wise, the bentos are adorbs. The display cases were also very neat, it's like a touch of Japan here in Kona! If you're on the go, the location provides for easy ingress/egress. And to top it all off, the cashier at the front had plenty of aloha. A++! P.S. A word about the branding: love. Food is premade, boxed in a plastic container, and placed under a heat lamp. There's vegetables mixed in with the fish/hot food so it's hot wilted vegetables and over cooked cod fish. My favorite was the miso cod -- perfectly cooked and flavorful (but note this dish is naturally salty). I also got the bento with 9 squares -- very instagram worthy. My mom preferred this box because of the fried fish and different types of rice. This food is great eaten at room temperature too. One bento is plenty of food for one person but you can also pick up drinks and small snacks here. read more

The "Kenichi Bento Box" is amazing. It is located in the Keauhou shopping center between KTA food market and Longs Drugs on Ali'i Drive, 10 minutes south of Kailua-Kona. What's really convenient about this place, is the food is readily available. You can eat inside or outside at this location. The ingredients are high quality. Top quality everything! Cold refreshments are also available. I met the owner, Jorden, who has an incredible menu and it's very sweet, kind and passionate about her restaurant . I have been to quite a few sushi restaurants throughout the Puget Sound area of Seattle and this is by far better than all of them! If I could, I would give it six stars read more

What can I say? I LOVE bento! Of our 8 nights on Big Island I, picked up bento 3 times from Kenichi Bento to enjoy watching the sunset. I love all the small dishes from the seaweed to the pickles. Small little place, perfect for grabbing meals to go with a variety of different options. I actually didn't end up getting anything from Kenichi (I walked in curious about the musubi) but I wanted to leave a review for the helpful cashier. When I started looking at what they had to offer, she asked if I'd been here before and when I said no, she made recommendations on the best bento boxes to try and how each one differed. If I'd been hungry, I probably would've walked out with 2-3 of them. Really great service and I'll make it a point to stop by next time! read more

Bento box is excellent for early morning and lunch. Prices are great, quality of food excellent, staff super friendly and knowledgeable. You can choose from sushi, to teriyaki, to even salads. Kenichi's new Bento Box location just opened up across from their full restaurant at the Keauhou Shopping Center. As the name suggests they offer bento boxes and other take away lunch options. Most items are priced in the $10 - $12 range and offer a nice option for lunch or a quick snack at a reasonable price. The restaurant does not have any outdoor seating of its own. There are a few benches nearby as part of the mall and hopefully they will be adding some seating for their customers once they get fully setup. There was a good selection of bentos to chose from, perhaps about 4 or 5 options including fish, shrimp and chicken. We tried the Aji Fish and the Dynamite Shrimp. Both were tasty and came with rice and a few small sides. Everything was fresh and enjoyable. For a $10 bento box I'm certainly comfortable giving them 4 stars. read more
