Many hours of research to find the right blonde specialist in NYC led me to Laura Estroff at Kennaland. In short--I was not disappointed--Laura is absolutely incredible. I came in with terribly warm, brassy hair that had been ombré and then highlighted over [very poorly], and she transformed it into an amazingly beautiful bright, cool-toned blonde. It's just perfect and stunning and the compliments keep rolling in. I cannot recommend Laura highly enough. If you're like me and need to research obsessively before a big hair change, save yourself some time and stop here because Laura is simply the best. I have been here a few times. They always give great service and I'm happy with the color and cut. It is pricier than your average salon but it's worth it. The last time I was there the color was not what I had expected. The manager Shandi communicated with me to come back and have it fixed the way I wanted. Let Laura Estroff be henceforth be known as "the Alchemist" for her scrupulous colouring talents--dedicating close to 5 hrs of processing yesterday--to bring my natural level 3 roots with 3-4" of regrowth to a surprisingly natural-looking and multidimensional level 8 blonde. Not only does Kennaland exude an industrial/reclaimed cool in its decor but the pricing structure is holistic (i.e. they don't nickel 'n' dime you every step of the way, or because those extra 2 or 3 foils bumped up your service from a "partial" to a half): my whole/full head 'revamp' included a single process base color to soften the regrowth, balayage of the mid-shaft through the ends, partial face-framing foils, and no fewer than 3 glazes/toners. All for about the same, or less, than what most salons would charge for a full head of foils to start! Talk about bang for your buck! It's certainly not 'cheap' but neither the quality nor the value of what you paid for would ever be questioned. The ladies there are absolute dolls--Shandy, the receptionist, went so far as to send me home with a travel sample of the hair product that I wanted to purchase, simply because they had run out of retail bottles to sell. As for the color, the results speak for themselves: in the past 24 hours alone I've been complimented by a) a random strangler who flagged me down in line at the post office, and b) my persnickety mother who has never, in my 15+ years of dying my hair, expressed direct approval of my styling choices. I am basically an anxious spaz that feels out of place everywhere I go. Just the idea of going to a trendy hair salon is enough to send me into a panic. My trip to Kennaland, however, was so pleasant and comfortable that I forgot to feel self-conscious. Alex put me immediately at ease and was the perfect combination of a good listener, interpreter and brilliant idea suggester. I neglect my hair. It's not that I don't want it to look great...I just can't bring myself to put the work in. So, when I came to Alex he had his work cut out for him. Frazzled ends, outgrown roots ( including some stubborn grey) and all over general dull, drabness. Nevertheless, I walked out with amazing hair, thanks to a great cut and absolutely beautiful ombré color that has gotten me countless compliments! Alex hand painted the color in like the true artist he is. There was no sense of a rush, he was all about getting it just right. Oh, and he used this magic blonding color (he said it was brand new) that miraculously did not seem to dry out or damage my hair at all! I swear that in spite of a significant lightening in color, my hair was softer and shinier. She was easy and breezy and no nonsense, and in no time, and to my surprise, my hair was cut. And wait, it's not a disaster, and wait, am i tripping balls or does it actually look (spoiler alert) GOOD!?
