I've been going to Ochi Dental for the past three years and I've always been happy with the level of care and experience. He's not the most convenient dentist for me to go to since I live on the Westside and their office is located deep into Redondo, but I'm comfortable now and don't want change. I go to Jennifer for my dental hygiene. She's gentle with the scraper (ugh) and asks periodically how I'm doing. Dr. Ochi sold me on the Sonicare toothbrush three years ago and I've been using it since, of course at Costco prices. But it's the nice touches the office has that adds to the five stars - On your first visit they'll walk you around the office and introduce you to all the staff. After you're done with your dental procedure they give you a warm towel for refreshing yourself. read more

I wouldn't recommend this office because of the office staff. Dr. Ochi himself is kind and knowledgable, but I found the billing department to be unorganized and careless. This caused me to waste a lot of time on back and forth with them. For example, there was a bill that I had a question on (whether it was my responsibility to pay it or the office's responsibility). In March they told me they would follow up with me, the next communication I got was in May saying they were sending my bill to a collection agency. When I followed up, after several phone calls back and forth they took responsibility for the billI and paid it, but it was a time consuming and frustrating experience - in my view very unprofessional on their end. I've also experienced inconsistency in my experiences here - some positive, some negative including wait times and lots of changes to previously scheduled appointments (by their office staff). read more

Quality of dentistry is very high. My experience with this dentistry has been some difficult cases for treatment, and this office is highly skilled in that. General care is great too. My lower rating is a result of the office staff. The downfall of this office is scheduling, and communication with billing and fees. Like most dental offices, payment is collected at time of service...the actual amount covered is not openly discussed or approved until submitted to insurance. This leaves you in the dark about fees unless you ask the office in advance about estimations. They do not bother telling you what things cost unless you specifically ask, whether payment is out of your pocket or not. There is no cash price or hardship break for patients. It feels taboo to even ask. Insurance is most often limited, especially for services like crowns and root canals. I have never bothered to negotiate for payment plans here, but it would involve some shady third party credit broker with ridiculous fees they would have you apply for, I am told. Really?? Not classy. Especially as someone who spent two years not working, experiencing other severe medical needs. Unknowingly, I needed to wait six months for my full dental coverage to kick in, but did not find out from the office until the week before I had a scheduled crown treatment, prematurely. Good thing I asked in advance. Only because I had come in for a covered cleaning. The scheduling polices are as constrained as I have ever witnessed in any health care office. I once canceled an hour appointment both by message after hours and a live call the day of to reschedule, as I did not get a phone call back. Now they want a deposit of half ($500) for things like crowns, at the time of booking. My record states a "no show", so they still do this penalization process, as if it's completely my fault. I am now told there is a "rule" of canceling long appointments (hour plus) two weeks in advance, or I will be charged. What if you are sick??? Hurt??? When I do cancel by message (twice now), I do not get a call back. How demeaning can you be towards clients?? Additionally, the woman who handles records and billing does not have a pleasant attitude. When I decided to reschedule, I asked about what was covered, only to find out that the $1000 I had prepaid months ago for that one specific crown treatment had been mostly used up (without my knowledge) on smaller treatments I had first for a small temp filling that kept coming out, as they wanted me to wait for too many weeks to go in for completion, only to overcharge me for each additional visit to rectify this. They then wanted me to reschedule for two crowns together in one appointment (2 hours +), which would cost me another $1200 out of pocket after insurance. I had no idea about their fees or intentions until I asked. I had remembered and negotiated only one. This is currently unresolved and unscheduled. It's as if everyone is a full ATM to them. To make things more displeasing, the visits are scheduled 2-6 weeks out for the main dentists, sometimes longer for Dr. Ochi himself. Emergency visits are hard to come by as well, and the office staff acts like they are doing you a huge favor if you do get triaged in quickly. Don't expect to see Dr. Ochi for those appointments. He has reduced his hours considerably. The D.D.S. hours are very limited, as there are no Saturday appointments and only half days on Friday (2:30p). I have sometimes been placed on the short wait list, which usually only works if you continue to call and check intermittently, but then the office staff gets visibly annoyed. All in all, I love the dentist staff, the high tech and the patience they exude. It's the unhappy office people and severe scheduling/billing oversights I could do without. read more

Dr. Ochi is simply the best dentist ever. I'm getting married this weekend and about a month ago (yes, I said a month!!!) I decided I wanted to replace my top right front tooth, which was a bulky, discolored, and cracked veneer. I got a referral from a friend who told me Dr. Ochi could work wonders, so I decided to give him a try even though I live in Burbank. Anyway, I always knew my old veneer was ugly, but I really didn't know bad it really was until Dr. Ochi put in my new veneer this week. The new tooth is amazing. No one can tell it's not my natural tooth! I'm not gonna lie . . . I was really worried it wasn't going to look good because it's my front tooth and I've had it veneered two times before by two different dentists, and it looked fake both times because they couldn't match the size, color and shape of the veneer with the real tooth next to it. I asked Dr. Ochi to replace the old veneer and do a new veneer on my top left front tooth so they would match, but he convinced me I didn't need to that because the left tooth was fine and it would be a waste of time and money, since he was confident he could match it (imagine an honest dentist that convinces you NOT to do needless procedures . . . this is why I am going to keep driving down to the South Bay for my dental needs). So needless to say, this time it was totally different. I am still shocked by how good it looks. I'm very happy. Thanks Dr. Ochi!!! read more

Long term consistent quality, pursuit of perfection, and value for the money. Practice opened in 1982. Sorry for the reference to Lexus automobiles but these qualities epitomize Dr Ochi's office after 10 years of consistent satisfaction as a patient. His dental equipment, which looked very cutting edge on my first visit in 2006, is constantly being upgraded over the years - really exceeding my expectations and giving a real sense of comfort and quality to the work being done. Dr. Ochi repaired a lot of quickie, shoddy work done by HMO dentists over the years with quality. I can enjoy my food! Staff? From my decade long observation, you have to be on top of your game, and with his "consistent quality" program to stay working for him very long - I'll say no more here! Heard of many recalls on Lexus automobiles? Walk into the lobby - the atmosphere is 'no-nonsense' - 'no slackers here...unlike the HMO physicians office I am locked into. When I twice needed a dental specialty I was not sent off to the specialists office halfway across LA. The specialist came to Dr. Ochi's office for the initial consultation and examination. Wow. A great comfort to have him close by for the second opinion. Consumers Research Council: consumersresearchcncl.org., rates Dr Ochi as one of "Americas Top Dentists" based on based on their criteria. After 10 years of exceeding my expectations I have to fully agree. I found a consistent WINNER longer in business than Lexus Automobiles who started in 1986. read more

Went to Dr. Ochi for the first time yesterday after getting a referral to him from my children's dentist. I have to say that I was extremely impressed. His entire staff was super friendly and professional. I was taken around and introduced to the rest of the staff but only after being asked if I was okay with that. My cleaning was super thorough and gentle. X-Rays went fine. And no issues with billing my insurance. I definitely would recommend him to anyone looking for a dentist in the SB. read more

I would not, under any circumstances, recommend Dr Ochi to anyone-- even to my worst enemy. He is arrogant and refuses to listen to the patient. For example, he did dental work that I did not authorize, he kept me in dental temporaries for over a year, and when I expressed my unhappiness over the implants he wanted to use he told me I "should go see someone else if I thought they could do a better job." Dr. Ochi refuses to release my records to me, or even explain what I am being billed for! However, he has no problem referring me to a collection agency, despite the fact that I have no idea why he is billing me. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Ochi for over 10 years. He did my top veneers when I was in my early twenties, and then he re-did my top and bottom right before I turned 30. Let me tell you, Dr. Ochi is AMAZING. He goes above and beyond for his patients. He does great work and always seemed like he cared and wanted me to be happy. His receptionist, however has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE skills I have ever encountered in my life. I have spent a lot of money with Ochi over the years, I am a busy person and run my own business, and I have missed some scheduled appointments with him over the years. Instead of just charging me a cancellation fee for the appointment missed, his receptionist gave me HUGE attitude about missing them to where it felt like some sort of life/death situation. I mean, for a little tweak or cleaning? Come on! Recently, when I called to cancel my upcoming appointment the receptionist cursed, scolded and yelled at me, so much to where I just hung up the phone. I felt so attacked I wanted to cry. As much as I love Ochi, I wish he and his staff realized the people coming to him and spending 30k on veneers most often have high demand jobs that cause them to cancel every now and then. It's great that's he's in high demand, but why not simply charge a patient a late cancellation fee instead of having your secretary bitch them out on the phone? PROS: Ochi and the dental assistants are amazing and make you feel like family. CONS: The front desk staff has the worst customer service and will make you feel like shit. Every time I came in I felt invisible or like I was back in high school in the principal's office!! I dreaded being in that office and after my last encounter I will never go back. read more

This was the worst experience I ever had with a dentist, I would not recommend anyone go to Dr. Ochi. My first time in, I waited in the lobby for a good 30 minutes before being taken back and paraded thru their back office so they could introduce me to every person on the staff, interrupting other people's appointments. I thought this was very strange and made me feel very uncomfortable. Next I waited to get a cleaning but this never happened, they simply looked at my teeth and measured my gums without ever performing a cleaning but then still billed my insurance for one. Also, I explained to them that any work needing to be done needed to happen within the next few weeks so I could use up my insurance limit before it started again. I had a few procedures I needed done but they were asking for the money upfront and would not bill my insurance first. They stated that I could get reimbursed from my insurance and just pay out of pocket now. I have never heard of such a thing! I have insurance for a reason and every other doctor or dentist I see, bills the insurance first. I was at the office for a total of 2 hours for basically nothing, left with no cleaning and no future appointment to take care of what I needed done. It was a complete waste of time and money, not to mention very frustrating. read more

This place is a sweat shop. I went for a routnine cleaning as I am new to the area. The intial cleaning seemingly went okay other than being rather awkward. They try and be friendly by parading you around to introduce you to every single person in the office. This is all fine however I felt very uncofortable standing over other patients wide open mouths to interupt the dental techs to meet and greet. It was uncomfortable for me when it came my turn to sit in the chair and have a stranger come in to meet my tech during my cleaning. After the cleaning I was offered a sleep study and provided a testing device to take home and use for three nights. Apparently I have some issue with grinding my teeth and this device will help pinpoint the problem. I signed for the device and used it as prescribed. I was offered instructions on the device and told if it is damaged or lost I owe $2250 to replace the device. That was fine, I am responsible and didnt plan to break or damage the thing. What I was not informed of was that I was to be charged $150 dollars to rent this thing which never found out about until after I returned to find out the results of this sleep study. I came back two weeks later to have a tooth I had chipped fixed and to get the sleep test results. I was hard sold on a "mouth appliance" that costs $2000-$3000 dollars for phase I of treatment and an additional $8000 to complete Phase II of treatment. This hard sell lasted an hour and fifteen minutes. After and hour and fifteen minutes the dentist left to tend to other patients. We still had not completed the hard sell or begun to fix my chipped tooth. Fifteen more minutes went by and I am sitting alone in the chair waiting for the dentist to return. After a full one and a half hours at the dentist and still not accomplishing anything I got up and notfied the front desk I had to leave for a work appointment. I think a hour and a half is a reasonable amount of time to do what needs to be done at a dental office outside the scope of any major dental surgeries. The front desk said thats fine and they would call to reschedule. They kind of rolled their eyes indicating this was typical and they had seen this before. Did not give me a real comforting feeling. They never called to reschedule. I still have a chipped tooth. I made the wrong choice coming to this dentist and now need to find a new dentist in the area. They did however make sure they called to surprise me with a $150 bill on the rental of this sleep study device which provided zero value to me. I have gone to the dentist all 34 years I have been alive. To date I have had great luck apparently as I had never had any issues with my dentist or dental office staff. This time I was unlucky. I would not reccomend this dental office. I am not a picky person and dont complain about much at all. I have never written a Yelp or any type of online review either positive or negative. I do not like being surprised with bills or fees. I really do not like having to pay bills I disagree with. I paid this bill after I received a 30 day late notice on this bill as I could see where this was going and go to great lengths to maintain a clean credit rating. read more
