Kenneth Volk! Another new stop for us. We had purchased the Summer Sippin' Passport ($20 for 20 tastings) and were in the club tasting room at Zaca (the only place out this way that I'm a member at) when and another couple mentioned heading out to pick up from their other club. Other club you say? Hmmmm, this piqued my interest. If I'm a member here, and they're members here and they're members somewhere else out here, we must have similar taste in wine... I quickly asked where they were headed and wanted to know more. They told us Kenneth Volk and mentioned all of the unique varieties. Only on this occasion, where we had already been down that way tasting and it was getting later in the day but with the opportunity to try so many new places on this passport, we gave it a go! We arrived at Kenneth Volk and right away my boyfriend spotted a familiar face from Rancho Sisquoc. That was lovely! I right away spotted the vegan cinnamon rolls :) We tasted several different wines and honestly, I enjoyed what we had and will return in the near future to taste again at a couple select places that were brand new to us this go around, but with a fresh palate. I'm happy we made it here and had a pleasant experience so we can get them into the rotation next time. read more

We enjoyed the chance to try Kenneth Volk's relatively new winery. It was nice and quiet, with a very small, quaint and friendly tasting room. The focus is on chardonnay and pinot noir, grown here in the Santa Maria valley, but they are also making some Bordeaux varietals grown in Paso Robles. They also feature a few "heirloom" varietals (more rare and/or unknown); we got to try a Negrette, which was quite interesting. Of all the wineries we visited this particular day, I thought the people here were the most friendly and helpful. $10 tasting fee waived with 2 bottle purchase as of 3/1/18 Tip: call ahead to find out if they have a mystery box. That is 12 preselected bottles of wine in a sealed box. I got mine for $120. The box had 6 kinds of wine 2 of each bottle. I thought this was very thoughtful. The first bottle could be enjoyed for what it is and the second bottle can either be paired with a food you think it would match, or be given away to a friend or an enemy.... depending on if you thought it was delicious or not. This is a nice family owned winery. If you are in to wine tasting for the sole purpose of finding delicious wines then this is the winery for you. There are fancier and more entertaining wineries for sure, but this place makes some great wines! I have lived in the area for about 2 years and Kennith Volks name keeps coming up when I ask locals who their favorite wine maker is. I wish I could find out more about the history of the man, but you can tell a lot about him from his wines. They seem to be be carefully crafted and he uses a variety of grapes. One of the better varietals that was served ( in my opinion ) is the blaufränkisch. I believe I had this same varietal at wild horse winery in Atascadero. Because I mentioned this to the friendly woman doing the pours (sorry I forgot her name) she informed me that Volk used to work at wild horse as their winemaker. This is a a humble winery and it seems to be run by a devoted winemaker. Places like this make me fell happy and blessed to live in Santa Maria. If you are just passing through you may be more impressed by other larger wineries, but the quality of this wine is as good as any other place that I have tasted on the central coast, which is only about 35 different places. read more

This was the second stop on our 3 for the price of 2 winery tastings. It's literally a 5 minute drive from Cambria Vinyards tasting room. The building that the KV tasting room is in is quite large, but the actual tasting room is fairly small. The tasting room itself has a very rustic or cabin feel to it. There was quite a few people here tasting which made for a crowded tasting room. The guy doing our pours was very friendly and knowledgeable. We were presented with a fairly long list of wines and we were told we could pick six to taste. We picked primarily reds, and two stood out. The Temparnillo and their Petite Sirrah (which is actually from the Paso Robles region). We got a couple of bonus pours and we revisited both the Temparnillo and the Petite Sirah. We decided to pick up two bottles of the Petite Sirah. In hind sight I wish I had taken a bottle of the Temparnillo too. We will be revisiting this winery! read more

We used to love this winery but several years ago we found the staff lacking in tact and professionalism so we cancelled our membership. I even wrote the owner a letter informing him as to what we had over heard but he never even acknowledged it. Two weeks ago we decided to check it out again. None of the wines jumped out at us. What we did notice was the unfriendly male in the back room pouring wine with a stone face! We actually mentioned to the girls out front that they were far more friendly and that they should be in the back pouring! Wine tasting should be fun! It's not here. read more

I love Kenneth Volk! Sooo much so that I'm actually considering joining their wine club... oh but to be a 24 year old on a budget... Screw it, I'm doing it! Thee best winery I've ever been too. Sure the tasting room is a little small, but they have great sommeliers and most importantly they have an amazing selection of wines! They have 2 tasting rooms. Whites and reds. I lingered a little longer at the white wine tasting room, being a white wine fan and all, but I must say they has some pretty incredible reds as well. My favorite whites were the Sierra Madre chardonnay and their viognier. Oh soo good! They also had a very good zinfandel. Very friendly and informative sommeliers. I think that's what made me enjoy this winery that much more. read more

The negative reviews made us even more inclined to visit. Ambience - small, quaint, tasting room on a Tuesday in May was just right. It's in a beautiful country setting. Service - 2 Servers: accommodating and VERY generous with extra pours, and revisits. Wine - 2009 Paso Merlot at $28 is a steal - bought a bunch. Full fruit forward nose, plum, currant, lush palate, peppery finish. Is that green pepper in there? Yep, that's it. Hey haters - its wine. And they have some pretty good selections. Worth the drive from Solvang. Or Buellton. Or Los Alamos. Or Santa Maria. read more

We already had several bottles from other wineries, but would've spent it here instead if we had known how amazing it would be. We still purchased a bottle of their pinot noir-bien nacido, a bottle of rose grenache, and a negrette. The man helping us was very knowledgeable and had great recommendations. I have had great respect for Mr. Volk since I had his Trousseau when he was making wines for Wild Horse up in Paso Robles. (He calls it Cabernet Pfeffer now, but if I've got it right, it's the same grape, from up in San Benito County, a lovely vineyard that doesn't make its own wines.) I'm not knocked out by his tasting room, and frankly it affects the way I feel about his wines. I'm far more critical of the wine after seeing how full of themselves the tasting room staff are. First of all, the tasting room is way off the beaten track. You have to drive many a mile to get here. And God forbid you should show up after they've decided to stop taking customers. No matter what their officially posted hours are, if they decide to close early, you're just sunk . . . after spending a long time to get there. Now you get to drive back to civilization with nothing to show. The wine is expensive. That's fair, for a good wine. But when I have been there, there are always so many people and so few staffers that it's really uncomfortable for everyone. I'm used to tasting rooms where you drift in, mill around, enjoy a sip here, a sip there, maybe check out the merchandise, and relax. At this place, there's a clump of people around each server, and it takes a lot to elbow up to the front. The servers do know the wine. I respect that. And the wine is decent. Is it worth the drive? Meh. You can get good wine at the grocery store, for less. (You can get brilliant wine, that outshines this, at a wine store, still possibly for less.) And you can save yourself the drive. If I were headed out into those particular boondocks for something else, I'd be happy to swing by again. Without question, the landscape is gorgeous. But I have been disappointed by the tasting room enough that I'm not likely to go out of my way to get there (and maybe find it closed, or maybe find it overcrowded and frustrating). read more

Visited Kenneth Volk this weekend. Had heard about their wines through several trusted recommendations. First, the drive through Foxen Cyn is simply beautiful. It's a ways out from Los Olivos but you will not be disappointed in their wine selection. This is a cozy place that is all about the process of truly great winemaking. You will not find a lot of bells and whistles in the tasting room, just competent, entertains wine educators. We had a ball!! The wines are excellent. read more

Beautiful canyon view from the winery! A little difficult to find. Finally found the place with the help of GPS on my second trip. It's one of those wineries that's worth the trip just to enjoy the scenery there and on the way. The only thing I really cared for in this tasting was a stainless steel barrel Chardonnay called Jaybird. The one pinot on the tasting didn't really impress me, and that's what I'd heard that they were producing, some good pinots, so I was a little disappointed in the tasting itself. Didn't purchase anything, although my friend liked one of their non-pinot reds and made a purchase. I'd say it's worth a visit. read more

Pinot Noir is may favorite glass, Kenneth Volk is my favorite maker of Pinot Noir. We just accidentally found this a few years ago, wondering what was down this way with Byron being closed to the public. What a treat. We buy something here every time we go. Ken pours in the tasting room and loves his wines. And when I see it on wine lists, I get it. After seeing a previous review about Ken being at Wild Horse (also known for Pinot, and also a preferred maker) I was surprised into looking into it further that he is the go to guy for Pinot Noir in the region and also was at Edna Valley. We just discovered this amazing winery after 7 years of consistently going up to the Santa Ynez Valley. The selection and varietals are very impressive. We purchased a mystery box they were offering for the holidays and every wine has been superb. We have 8 wine memberships in this region and this is definitely one of our favorites, if not our favorite. The tasting room and the surrounding grounds are underwhelming and it is off the beaten path, however, the wines are extraordinary! read more

KV has one of the widest arrays of featured wine that I've come across in the Central Coast producing everything from regional specialties to rare heirloom varietals from Portugal and Germany. I've been fortunate to try most of them and have been hard pressed to find anything below par. The tasting is hosted in their barrel room and gets you six pours of your choice and a free glass. I've been here in a group of as many as nine and have routinely received excellent service. A few favorites of mine have been their Rose, Tauriga, Tempranillo, Cabernet Pffefer (not a Cabernet Sauvignon) and Petite Sirah. I highly recommend checking out KV for variety with not substitute to quality. read more

If you're in the Los Olivos area, keep driving up Foxen Canyon Road, and make a right on Tepusquet Rd. the location of the winery is really something to see. the tasting room itself was quite small. but, they have a large patio area. and, the barrel room was open, as well. though i'm not sure if it was open because of the vintners' festival weekend. they have wines from the santa maria valley as well as the paso robles region. and, they are all high quality wines. definitely worth a stop here! read more

By far one of my favorite vineyards that I visited on our trip to Santa Maria and Solvang. The sommeliers are knowledgeable and friendly. They explain and describe the wines and even what pairs well with them. The grounds are beautiful and there are picnic areas and many places to take photos with the back drop of the mountains. read more

I visited the wine tasting room on 9-10-19 which was a Monday. It was a small area and Carol who was the server did an outstanding job of pouring the wines and explaining the different wines that were poured. I bought the mystery case of 12 wines for $144. I am now back in Vegas sampling the Cabernet Pfeffer wine. I totally enjoyed the tasting and will revisit the place when I return to Santa Barbara. read more

The Kenneth Volk Vineyard was the last stop of my brief one-day Santa Barbara County vineyard trip and I'm so glad I went here! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in answering my group's questions and most of the wines were tasty. Their '06 Santa Maria Cuvee Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were just okay but I ended up purchasing a bottle of their '07 Roussanne (nice and light white, a bit dry.. would go great with summer salads) and their '04 Negrette (delicious red). Last year some friends who were members introduced us to Kenneth Volk winery. I was amazed at all the wines we tasted - I'd say about 15 (and that wasn't all of them), definitely had to share. Non members get about 6 tastes, but get to choose from about 20. We liked the wines so much we signed up on our next visit. The whites are good, but Kenneth Volk makes some outstanding reds. They have excellent Pinot's, Zins, and blends. Gary was pouring wines for us the last trip - he is very knowledgeable about the wines and the entire region. They also have a tasting room in Paso Robles, where a lot of their grapes come from. read more

Great tasting. The place might not be much to look at, but the staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and the wines were quite good (for me, the reds in particular). They use grow and use very interesting varietals I'd never been exposed to before, including Negrette, Cabernet Pfeffer, and Mouuvedre. Thomas did a great job walking us through the wines. He also let us try a Syrah that wasn't on the tasting menu. Loved it. In retrospect, wish I'd bought more wine there! Will definitely go there again next time we're in the area. read more

Far and away the best wine we've tasted in the region! Definitely worth the $10 tasting. We chose to do the cheese pairing for $5 more and are so happy we did! Delicious! The staff was friendly and informative, reasonably priced bottles, and your tasting fee is waved if you buy 2+ bottles. Which we did! It was too good not to! It's a little out of the way but Kenneth Volk is worth the trip! Just beware that the tasting room is small. We went on a weekday so we had no problem but I imagine it could get crowded during the weekend. read more

I am so happy to have found Kenneth Volk. With the construction of the Tepesquet bridge its an easy addition to the foxen canyon wine trail. The best wines and the most beautiful settings are on the northern end of the Santa Barbara county wine country. As with the others in the area (Cambria, Riverbench, Tantara) the wines here are very high quality. The staff was very warm and the tasting room was comfortable and inviting. I bought a case of their 2008 Chardonnay on sale for less than 200 bucks. I will definitely be back and look forward to making this a regular stop when I am in the area. read more

Really nice staff welcomed us and had a lot of choice as to which wines were tasted. the only odd thing was the tasting took place in the barrel room which was a big caverous concrete room, very chilly, which had some random tiki decor around the white wine area. I don't know if it was because this was our first stop of our wine tasting tour, but I could not stop talking about the wines and fantastic staff at Kenneth Volk. And believe me, my friends were on the verge of being annoyed. The Sierra Madre Chard, the Pinot Noir (old school pls), and Cab Franc all still resonate on my palate. The vine was one of non-intimidation, which was awesome for my friend who doesn't know much (about wines) and myself, an intermediate-enthusiast. After writing this, I'm now convinced that my obsession was NOT due to it being the first stop, but to the extremely well cultivated wines and knowledgeable staff at Kenneth Volk.
