This was our first visit to this rustic tasting room, and we had a nice experience. It was a Friday, right after opening, and we had the whole place to ourselves. The service was friendly, and my wife and I shared a traditional and custom flight. We thought that the wines were decent, some better suited to our palates than others, but well-made, nonetheless. We were fortunate to meet and speak with the owner who happened to be bringing in supplies and got a little more detail on the wines, than we did from our "winerista". He also mentioned that his niece opened a winery in Los Olivos (Story of Soil), which focused on wine styles a little out of our wheelhouse, but we thought we'd give that a try as well, and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. Costa De Oro is a nice place with wine varietals for everyone's tastes. I recommend you stop in and give them a try when you're passing through the area.

We were stopping in Santa Maria on our way up north and decided to visit Bien Nacido vineyards…read more While the vineyard has been there for ages, the tasting room is relatively new (3 years old). I arranged for the ATV tour for my husband and I around noon, but encountered unexpected traffic on our way up from LA so our arrival time for our tour got delayed. Our tour guide Morrie was thankfully flexible and understanding with our late arrival and was welcoming when we finally arrived. After driving through lots of farmland, we arrive to The Gatehouse (the tasting room). It is a beautiful building with large windows looking out to the vineyards. It has such a relaxing vibe. Since it was a gorgeous day, we decided to settle our (high school and college) kids down at a table in the outdoor patio with lunch. After taking a few quick bites of our sandwiches so we had something in our stomachs before we started our tasting tour, we were on our way. Morrie is also the sommelier for Bien Nacido so not only was he was well versed in the history of the Bien Nadico vineyard, he was also very familiar with the wines and grapes and was very informative and we learned quite a lot. He took us up and down and all around the vast property and we were told about how Bien Nacido grows grapes for other wineries and that they lease out their land to other local growers for vegetables, fruits, etc. During our time there, we tasted the Rose, Chardonnay, a couple different Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Everything tasted great, but the Syrah was a bit intense for me personally. Morrie even picked some grapes off the vines for us to try. My husband and I really enjoyed our visit and left with way more than we planned to buy, and since we had so much fun, we made our college kid drive us to our hotel. We were greeted by Jordan, a friendly, informative, and helpful wine enthusiast. Jordan provided details of the grape, year/ season, and descriptions on each wine's flavor and suggested pairing. We learned a bit of history of Bien Nacido and the popularity of the grapes. We opted to do both tastings, estate and black label to fully experience their wines. Jordan started us off with a rose, well balanced and dry, perfect for hot summer days. Our favorites were the GSM blend, smooth, full flavor and the black label Syrah, full-body with notes of berries, and nice depth. We are so glad we took advantage of the FP perk and visited Bien Nacido, with a couple bottles of GSM and Rose in hand.

We came with our pup, and Google Maps took us up Tepusquet from the 166. Don't do it. Just don't. I love a good adventure, but this didn't make any sense for being any faster or more efficient. It's windy, narrow, and steep. Poor June was car sick from the drive. While the drive had some great views, we were anxious to get to Cambria. Upon arrival we noticed that the tasting room was uphill from the vineyards, providing a great view. I will say that the tasting room was cut into a little crevice so the views from the deck are limited. However, there is a beautiful private tasting area on a hill (when you turn into the winery parking lot) that would be a fantastic spot for good views. The wine was nice, plenty of variety. And I appreciated the unique guidance of wines from the staff. By providing your preferred wines and notes they will create a personal tasting menu. We also opted for the charcuterie for 2 which was perfect. Plenty of bites to accompany our tasting. Because wine is so unique it's always difficult to review, so I prefer to focus on the experience as a whole, and Cambria nailed it. We would definitely return and hang out by their fireplace. Other club you say? Hmmmm, this piqued my interest. If I'm a member here, and they're members here and they're members somewhere else out here, we must have similar taste in wine... I quickly asked where they were headed and wanted to know more. They told us Kenneth Volk and mentioned all of the unique varieties. Only on this occasion, where we had already been down that way tasting and it was getting later in the day but with the opportunity to try so many new places on this passport, we gave it a go! We arrived at Kenneth Volk and right away my boyfriend spotted a familiar face from Rancho Sisquoc. That was lovely! When this wine was put in a tall glass it tasted and smelled completely differently than when it was put in a wider and shorter glass. We have tried so many different wines but never like one as this. We loved learning about the winemaker. Annie was so friendly and knew so much about the different wines they offered here.
