However, having always had something special going for it,the north Texas growth has breathed new life into this 10 square mile area formerly " historic" McKinney. This little lake created by forward thinking city planners is more and more a community gathering point. Just to the west is a full blown Frisbee golf course, hiking/biking trails and more. The property is beautiful and very well maintained. We went on a wagon ride and saw all sorts neat animals and learned about them from the guide. We rented fishing poles ($5) and went fishing in the stocked pond. We played with young antelopes, found turtles, and hunted for frogs and snails. We jumped in a canoe and paddled around the small lake. Stand up boards, kayaks and peddle boats are also available (unfortunately the peddle boats were out of commission today). We played sand volleyball, badminton, shuffleboard and horse shoes. Face painting, bounce houses and snacks all available too. A few more games were up on the deck as well as ducklings to pet. A wonderful way to spend the day with the family. We'll definitely be back!

We did not go to the fishing pier but want to check it out soon. I did talk to a lady on the phone there and she was helpful in telling us the amenities.

Attention to detail was obvious as we entered the tiny house. Aesthetically pleasing was a must for both of us as Jay designs websites and I studied interior design. We have pretty high standards. We enjoyed hiking trails through the woods and along the railroad tracks that were not in use any longer. The temperatures in October were unusually high around 90 degrees but the shade of the trees made our hikes a real treat. We grabbed takeout from Bonham one evening and dined in Paris another. With a small kitchen, the rest of our meals were easy to prepare there. The pool looked inviting but we chose to go get target practice in. Next trip we will definitely need to get swimming in. Ending our time by a campfire was the perfect end to our relaxing weekend.

Then, we visited the recently renovated children's playground that has a large playground structure, swings, a zipline, and a warped wall. There are also at least two bathrooms located throughout the park- always a plus. Oh, and there's also two dog parks and a swimming pool, plus ample parking. If you're looking for a fun place to take your kid or go for a walk or run, this is a great spot. It gets quite crowded in the summer, but hey, it's popular for a reason.

What a treat to get just an hour out from Dallas and be able to enjoy a crisp lake, minimal crowds,…read moreblue skies, plenty of trees, and around five miles of trails! The state park had multiple clean restroom facilities with water fountains and places to fill bottles. I enjoyed a 14 mile trail run, looping each trail several times. Multiple trails offer lakefront views. The park is open early (6 AM) all the way til 10 PM with self-pay options for entering. At just $5 to enter, it's a real bargain to get outside and get your dose of nature in. There were minimal pests (bugs) throughout the park (unlike my last trip to Broken Bow!), and I must have seen at least 20 deer in the 3ish hour period I was there. It's not Colorado or anything, but for being so close to Dallas it's a perfect retreat. The park staff was very friendly, along with all the locals I encountered on the trails!
