What I loved about the way he does things is that he inspects the vehicle first before even giving a quote. Don't expect him to update you all the time on the status of your vehicle though. I think it's because he works on the vehicles himself and does the admin stuff also. This keeps the cost down. Some of the parts he used where from the manufacturer itself (I saw the receipts). Wow. I am beyond speechless and filled with joy after taking my car to Ken. I've had the same issue with my car happening for more than 6 months. If you are blind and are carrying a million $ in cash at Ken's - he would still not cheat you. Lol. This is not a hyperbole. This review is long time coming. We bought a used 2002 Avalon from Sunnyvale's Toyota dealership in 2018. For the first 2-3 months the car was terrific. Then it started to shake like Michael Jackson with engine light and other lights lit like a Christmas tree. We took it to Precision Care on El Camino (1805 El Camino), they took our money, said that the issue is fixed but it was to come back within a week. This time I searched on the Internet for a new auto repair and found Ken's. Ken took a look and charged us 450 or so to fix it. But, after couple of months the issue came back. I took it back to Ken and this time the bill was around 750$, very hesitantly I paid the damage and got the car fixed. I was getting stressed that this car is going to be a costly one to maintain. But, Ken's magic worked and his assurances were indeed real. He told us to keep the car and promised that it would run forever (even with 160K on it then). It indeed turned out true. It is April 2021 now and the car runs smooth with no trouble whatsoever since Ken fixed it the last time. Ken is a very professional guy and he knows what he is talking when he diagnoses the issue. Ken's the best. My brother and I had to hastily install a alternator when mine went out a month ago. Turns out, the accessory belt on the pulley became loose which caused a heck of a racket and made my power steering and other systems falter. As this COVID pandemic is currently going on and I don't have tools (at my brothers house but we're all sheltering in place) I called Ken to see if he could tighten things up. He was super reasonable and fast. He said he'd go down to the shop and be there in about an hour and it would cost about $20 since I knew what the issue was. You can tell the people writing them are clueless about trouble shooting cars and emotionally latching on to the BS the next mechanic is feeding them. I work on cars and will have a car towed hundreds of miles to have this man do the jobs I don't want to do. Given the volume of work he does, it's amazing he turns things around as well as he does. I don't know how he keeps track of everything he's working on. He's a hard worker and as such... You aren't going to get him calling everyone with updates and plesentries. He's like a fictional character in his huge garage burred in cars working on several at the same time with his headlamps and flashlights... He's honest and money conscious by nature and therefore is empathizing with your bottom line probably more than he should. He's a good deal. He will go the extra mile to save you money on OEM/ quality parts. He can get them cheaper than you. If he finds things you need that he knows you can do he'll point them out and tell you rather than offering to take your money. i've been taking my junk on wheels to Ken for about a year now. I feel there are both pros and cons for this shop. Pros: - open every Saturday, with extended hours on the weekdays (till 7pm!) - located near all the major freeways (280, 87, 880), public transit (Lightrail & 22), and a relatively easy walk from anywhere downtown. - all transactions are done directly with the owner : no middle man! - will offer direct quotes over the phone on service. Cons: - doesn't except payment plans - Ken talks really fast, and sometimes it feels like I'm missing some information on the condition of my vehicle. I also feel that he only focuses on the problem at hand, I'm more concerned with what preventive work can be done for my cars. About 8 months ago, I blew the tranny on my Sable. Ken was really helpful on letting me leave the car on his lot for a couple of days until it could be donated. He didn't even charge me! I recently purchased a used 1999 Sebring from Ken for the price of $4000. Ken gave me a 6 month warranty on the car for any engine or transmission issues I might have. He gives me no hassles whatsoever and is always very honest with me on any problems or questions I might have. I will going back here for any work that I can't do myself. read more

I've taken my car here twice now. I had it diagnosed by a friend who is very familiar with cars. I went to Ken and told him that I had a cracked thermostat housing. He said "Okay" and fixed it for a fair price and I was happy. The second time I went to him, I told him I thought I may have a clutch plate issue. I told him I wasn't sure, and asked him if that would cause the sputtering that my car was experiencing. He responded with an emphatic "definitely". He installed a new clutch for the price of $700 and told me the sputtering would go away as soon as I replace several parts that didn't seem relevant to the problem. As I drove away, my car continued to sputter. In fact, it sputtered for the next two weeks until my friend solved the problem by installing a new coil pack himself for $100. Bottom line is this: Ken made no effort to diagnose the issue which is vital to his job is as a mechanic. In fact, he was all to happy to take my $700 for a clutch it turned out I didn't need. He didn't seem like he really understood how to fix the problem, nor did he take the time to do any research. (It took my friend 10 minutes of internet searching to fix it) Since the coil pack was installed, my car has been running smoothly without any sputtering. read more

He always does the job in a timely manner and doesn't add on extra charges that I see many other mechanics tag. If you need to get your car maintained or know what is the cause of the problem I would recommend taking it to him. However, Ken is not good at diagnosing the problem. He does not look at the overall condition of the vehicle. If you need more of an analytical review of your car I would recommend going elsewhere. When we had a transmission problem with our van we tried Ken multiple times and finally went to Gearmaster who did a decent job, but at a much higher price. read more

OK so...it pains me to rate him low because he's a cool guy but... In my first review I wrote I went to Ken to fix my axle and he did. Welllll the next day i went on a freeway ramp and CREAAAK. There goes my axle again. To be fair, originally my car had been creaking alot more whenever I turned to the right. Now the creakiing mostly came from turning to the left. So I brought my car back again a few days later and told him my axle was still creaking. I also needed a smog check and it says "SMOG CHECK" there on his building next to "Ken's Auto" so I killed two birds with one stone. He told me he wasn't going to charge me for the axle bit, just for the smog check, which was commendable. I come back the next day for my car, and it wasn't in the yard, so I figured it must be soemwhere deep in the garage still getting worked on. Turns out Ken had taken it to the guy next door for the smog check. He charged me 60 bucks that day. I don't think smog checks are supposed to be that expensive. Oh and my axle still make noises from time to time. I don't know man. I"d stick with this guy for oil changes. But for any hardcore diagnostics stuff I might take my car to soemone else. Ken was really helpful when I was calling around all over town to get my rotator and brakes replaced. I do a lot of driving, and at that time I was making multiple trips to LA and commutes that involved driving up and down steep hills so my brakes had to be replaced ASAP! My tires were rubbing metal against metal and it was embarrassing to drive around! I dropped off my car after I took a half day and Ken offered to let me sit in the nice air conditioned office to wait instead of the heat wave we had going on outside, but I wanted to take a walk and ended up in Caesar Chavez plaza. Definitely a nice, short walk and by the time I finished my coffee, Ken was ready for me! Getting quality brakes and tires for such an affordable price definitely made my day. Tuesday 2PM: Park at Jalapeño Rojo and Ignition wont turn over. I contact a mobile mechanic via Craigslist and they give me a 2 hour estimate...they never came. I eventually go over to Ken's to see if he can help. He tells me he can't do anything without the car being in his lot. I spend the night in my car. Wednesday 8 AM: Wake up in car to call a different mobile mechanic -930 AM Mobile mechanic begins diagnosing, tells me my ignition switch is shot. Suggests I go to Orelillys to buy one. -11AM en route to Orellys -11:15 AM Mobile mechanic calls and tells me "We have a problem. This taco place is threatening to call the police and have us towed, so I'm putting everything back together." cost: $20 -11:15 I start to contact my Roadside Assistance. -11:45 car is brought right next door to Ken's shop. Family run business (this warms my heart) but Ken is very methodical in his dealings it seems. Almost like Mr. Miyagi was working on your car. He disassembles as I nap in the back seat. Eventually he comes to the conclusion: it actually was not my ignition switch but a different component related to it. In order for me to start and turn off the car, it requires me sticking a pin in the cylinder and turning it with pliers. He gave me detailed instructions on how to successfully go about this until I get the part from Pick and Pull. About 2.5 hours of work cost me $40. Before puling out, I noticed my windows wouldn't roll up (I had slept with them down the whole night) He patiently checked the fuses, found a burned one and replaced it at no extra charge. That's not it. He noticed my door panel was detached at the bottom which prevented my door from closing all the way without a solid slam--He kneeled down fidgeted for a moment then gave it a good slam. Door Fixed. I am beyond satisfied with his service and will be taking the car back once I find the appropriate part. Oh, and I live in Pacifica, so that is quite the distance, but I know the end result will be worth it. Thank you Ken and Family! read more

I've been going to Ken for 5 years now. He is the most reasonable and genuine mechanic I have ever dealt with. First experience I had with his shop was 5 years ago and I couldn't pass smog. He diagnosed and fixed the issue for me and smogged it for a more than fair price. On a different occasion I was having idling issues, drove it to Ken's shop and within 5 minutes of him looking at it, he pointed out the problem and told me how to fix it and that I could do it myself no problem. Didn't even charge me for diagnosing it! He is the only mechanic I have ever trusted. He has always given me a good deal and is thorough about explaining what is wrong. The best experience I ever had with Ken's Auto was when I was on my way home from work at 6pm and my u-joint busted and the drive-shaft fell off on the freeway, completely destroying it. I gave Ken a call and he stayed open way past his standard hours for me to get towed in. The next day he called me up and said he would try and source a drive-shaft in the area. The day after I was on the road again and the bill was so low I was almost shocked. He is the most reasonable and fair-priced mechanic I have ever met. Genuinely a stand-up guy. We came from Sacramento and got to San Jose and our crv went to limp mode and threw a code. The vtec pressure solenoid needed to be changed out. The owner charged us pretty much $400 for 1 hour of labor. The part he installed failed and started leaking oil the day after the part was installed. The car never had a leak before. Do not go here because he will take advantage of you and rip you off. He told me it was gonna be a lot of work but when I check and told him is just 1 hour of labor tops he didn't want to hear any of it and still charged me $400 for 1 hour of labor because he said that was the set price before I checked myself online when I picked up the car.
