So I took my bike to my regular mechanic (an auto/motorcycle/trailer two-mechanic shop) because the idle had some chatter in it and it was using oil. My mechanic calls me to tell me that he hears the chatter in the engine, thinks it's on the lower end of the engine, possibly a cracked piston... And that it's a bigger job than he has time for now to get it turned around quickly. He recommends me to Ken's Cycle Repair... So over at Ken's, the first thing they notice is one of my spark plugs was bent, the spark was arcing, and the tester was showing electricity escaping from all of the spark boots. They pulled the boot from the bent plug and the plug's outer end disintegrated! I mean we're talking about a porcelain dust pile on the floor. The mechanic blew the porcelain off the engine with an air compressor, threw it up on the lift and fixed it right in front of me. A new spark plug and 4 new plug caps, and some conversation about my bike... He takes it down off the lift and runs it around the parking lot. Then he has me take it around the lot. Idle is strong and relatively quiet. The chatter was due to a misfiring cylinder. Ken said to do an oil change using Castrol GTX and see if that clears up excessive oil usage, and that all older bikes use some oil (I bought mine used with 26K) and that he's had good luck with that oil. It seems that Ken (35+ years in the business) does the bulk of the odd-ball evaluations and then tells his mechanics what needs to be done... The shop is HUGE and has a permanently-fixed pick-up bed ramp and also portable ramps (I saw them load a bike when I first arrived), night drop-off and enough new tires and parts to make a dealer jealous. It's right off Route 61 (within walking distance from the Route 61 Diner if you need to wait for something). They also had plenty of older bikes in a showroom-type setup that I can only guess were for sale since they weren't license plates on them. They also offered me my old parts -- basically everything you hear a mechanic should do, they did. Here I was thinking I'd be looking at a $350 - $500 repair and it ended up being: 4 Plug Caps -- $30.00 1 Spark Plug -- $3.00 Labor (Test, replace Plug Caps) -- $35.00 Tax -- $4.08 Total -- $72.08 Ken's knowledge/honesty -- PRICELESS During the 10 mile ride home it ran stronger than when I bought the bike last August! It pulls right off the line and keeps pulling -- when I bought the bike the 0-25mph was a little clumsy, the bike would perform like a runner with a foot that had fallen asleep until it hit third gear or so and then it was fine. Since it's my first bike, I just assumed that it was the nature of I-4 engines (I have a Yamaha Seca II). Ken had said that above 25mph, the arcing spark plug was no longer an issue. I bought a used, non-running SR500 here. The price was reasonable for a sale through a regular business. Ken took time to go over the whole machine with me, pointed out what needed attention and helped me load it. I've been riding and working on bikes for over thirty years and was VERY impressed with the facility and with the fact that an owner is still directly involved with the workings of the shop. Real mechanics are hard to find. I just wish he was closer to where I live. The guy below who is whining about getting his tires mounted is a classic example of beer budget with champagne taste. He needs to think about the fact that businesses exist to make money instead of crying about how much he spends to maintain his toys. BTW, after about an hour of work the SR500 lit right up and ran like a champ. read more

Ken's motorcycle is the best local motorcycle shop I have been to in my 40 years of riding all types of metric bikes. Both Ken and Dave are way more qualified then the big dealers (Stealers) who have worked on my motorcycles and did not repair warranty items and had to return many times with little resolution. Kens fixes it right the first time. Service is top notch. I have had both large and small repairs done on 3 of my motorcycles over the last 4 years and the work has been outstanding and at a affordable rate. Took my bike ( 82 yamaha maxim) in because I was having a turn signal problem, no appointment just drove right up. Ken came out looked it over, did some tests and found the issue within 5 minutes. Didnt charge me a dime. After sitting and talking about the bike and the bikes he had out on display for a few minutes I was on my way. Saved me $40 on a flasher relay that I thought was bad. I have a 2006 T-rex and took it to Ken's for a gearbox repair. It's not a commonly seen cycle, so the mechanics needed to do some research on how to properly repair it. They did the needed research, got the appropriate parts for repair, and completed the repair in a timely manner. Upon completion of the repair, the mechanic attempted to take her for a drive, only to find that a wheel bearing was also bad. They repaired the wheel bearing and she now runs great! Last year my bike needed a tune up and a good going over before I went on a memorial bike ride for a fellow police officer the was killed in the line of duty. I spoke to the owner (KEN) and dropped the bike off. I told him and the male at the desk what I needed (tune up,oil change and a good going over. I also needed them to please check the battery to see if I need a new one, I never changed it since I owned the bike (2001 V-star custom) for three years. I picked the bike up the bill was $300 went on the ride and half way through the ride the bike kept shutting off. I had to push start the bike to get is started to get home. When I got home, I checked the battery and it was very hot and round in shape (the Battery was the orignal one). The battery was never changed but I was charged. I called them and got no where. So I figured I would give them another chance. I'm now customizing that same bike. I called and spoke to Ken, the owner, looking for a used 16 inch Vstar classic front wheel/rim so it would be easier to find a wide white wall tire. Knowing that Ken has a bone yard outback of his shop with crashed bikes. I told him what I was trying to do to customize my bike and that it has a 18 inch wheel and it was hard to find WW tires. He said he couldn't help me with the wheel so I asked him if he knew of any places that could help me. His reponse was check ebay laughed and hung up. I called numerous dealerships and was able to find wide wall tires from a honda shop in Pottstown 30 mins from my home. I bought the tires from Kiss Honda and figured since Ken's is 5 mins from my home I would take the bike to him to balance and put the tires on. I stopped by Ken's to ask them their prices for putting the tires on, trying to give the local guy the business instead of the dealerships.He gave me the price of 55 bucks a tire plus balancing cost and 7 bucks to get rid of the tires.The price was more then the dealership I got the tires from. I was going to give Ken the job but then Ken the owner said " You know pal you don't go to a resturant and bring your own eggs and ask the chef to cook them." My response was " well sir I spoke to you a last week asking you if you could find me Vstar classic rims and or ww tires for my bike and you couldn't help and then said check Ebay and laughed. I started going to Ken`s shop in 1984.Up to date I have nothing bad to say about all aspects of the way he runs his business . Recently I took my aspencade to Ken for work(fork seals and front brakes).Well I am in deed a prick when it comes to my bikes.That being said ,I did not like the way the bike handled when I got it back.Long story short-Kens shop tore the whole front end apart and replaced the fork springs at NO CHARGE FOR LABOR(just the cost of new springs).Kens shop is not the cheapest shop in town BUT when you only have two wheals under your but ,do you really want the lowest bidder working on your bike ? Kens price`s are very fare considering the quality of work your getting witch in my opinion is second to none.Ken always stood behind his work for me and CALLED me when ever he noticed something that needed attention other than what the bike was there for.(most of the time it was just something I should be aware of and did not require immediate attention).As long as Kens is in business I will not go anywhere else for repairs . PLEASE bear in mind this is a 30 year review,not just a review after a few visits !!!................enough said,time to ride,ride safe and remember drinking and driving is stupid,drinking and riding is suicide read more
