I have been frequenting this business for more than 20 years. They have repaired clocks and watches for me, and all have been superior and lasting workmanship. I periodically go in to have my watch batteries replaced (I have several watches). This review is specifically in praise of Yakov, who has worked there as long as I remember. Among my watches was my relatively recently deceased dad's timex. He took a look and said it didn't just need a battery and that he didn't think he could repair it. When I expressed a bit of disappointment and told him it was my dad's he said "leave it with me. I don't know if I can do it but I will try." Today I picked up a refurbished and perfectly working watch. He charged me nothing. Even when I tried to insist. I simply did a yelp search and got very lucky with these guys. They fixed it while I waited for a very reasonable price to my young son's delight who was very interested in the actual repair itself. I bring my watches to have the batteries replaced. The watchmaker is always very helpful,. I once brought in a watch missing a screw-like device and he found an extra one in his toolbox and replaced it free of charge. It was from Watchcraft, a specialized and not your everyday watch band design. If I had a very expensive high-end brand I would bring it to a specialized watchmaker that works with that brand. I usually go to another watch repair shop who charges me around $10-$12 for a battery replacement but today I tried Kensington because they were a lot closer. Unfortunately, I was seriously overcharged for the replacement of some watch batteries. Kensington's website advertises 3 watch batteries for $18.69 with a "while you wait" special of $7.69 so I was confused when my total turned out to be $87 when it should only have been around $26. The technician said that one of the watches "needed to be sealed" and that another took some time because of the screws (whatever that's supposed to mean), but nothing that warranted tripling my tab. Regardless, I sat right near him for the 15 minutes it took him to replace these batteries and he never once asked me to approve any additional work that would have incurred additional costs. If they had charged me fairly, I would have returned. By seriously overcharging me today, they lost any chance that I would ever give them any more business. read more

This shop reminds me of the children's book [Clocks and More Clocks] that I use when introducing telling time to my students. Clocks everywhere you look. I didn't need a clock, but I did need a new battery for my watch that I haven't worn for over a year because I was too lazy to replace the battery on my own. I'm not sure what the actual cost is, but I always get a coupon for this place in one of those "junk mail" blue envelopes. $4.99 for the first watch, $4.00 each after that. The guy from that children's' book would love that deal! Anyhow, when I walked in and said I needed a battery replaced, the gal at the counter sent me to this back room with even MORE clocks and there was a guy, Russian I think, sitting behind a desk like you see in all those old movies. "You want new battery? Let me see you watch." I obediently hand over my Kohl's special. With a pop and a blink of an eye the gent did his job and now I am back to staring at my wrist every ten minutes or so. I will be back if I can rummage up all my cast-off watches that I have neglected over the years. read more

Do NOT take your clock here. We brought two clocks in for repair. The woman at the desk called someone else who was in the back of the shop. While she was on the phone with him, he asked for my phone number, saying the connection was bad. He had her bring the clock to him in the back. Then she came back with the clocks and the man called us on the phone, saying they needed to come to our home for a house visit rather than fixing it in the shop. We couldn't understand why they needed to come to our house to fix the clock, especially during COVID. Feeling very uncomfortable, we packed up the clocks and left. Our biggest mistake was giving him our phone number. 5 minutes after we left, they started calling over and over and over again. The best thing we did was get out of there. It doesn't get any worse. I dropped off a clock for repair and was told they would take a look and get me an estimate in a couple weeks. A month later, I was told it would take 3 months, and was give. A price. I agreed and waited. 3 month later, I called and was told the employee working on it quit, and another employee took over his backlog, so it would take another couple months. Checked in a couple months later, and I was told the employee working on it wasnt inand call back later. Another 4 months later, and they finally admit they lost the clock. I wad told to contact the owner. After multiple calls and emails, the owner says the former employee stole it, and I should call him. I called the employee, and he said the owner is a flat out crook. I called the owner again, and he refused to take any responsibility for losing the clock. These people are down right shady. Avoid them at all cost. read more

I used to go to this shop for battery replacement and repairs since years. I have paid $5.00 for each battery replacement. Master Yakov did excellent job every time, even on estimating the work to be done. Today I went there to put a battery in my daughters Citizen wrist watch. I saw two ladies sitting behind a show-case and a watch-maker in his post #2. Unfortunately Mr Yakov was not in. After I signed in in their note book, the lady told me to go to Nr.2 (nothing about the price was told, nor it was written). In less then 5 min it was ready and they talked together in a foreign language and.... the price in a piece of paper: $13.85. I dropped off my aviator chronograph watch in November 2020 for restoration and the company never returned the watch to me or refunded me the cost of the repairs. Their technician Alex gave multiple excuses for not having the watch ready just as others have said in their ratings. This place is most definitely to be avoided at all costs. I'm joining with many others I see here, and say, DO NOT TAKE YOUR CLOCK HERE!!! I took a lovely modern artwork clock into them on August 15th, to have the battery-powered mechanism replaced. I explained exactly what needed to be done and Alex assured me that he could do it. THEY KEPT THIS CLOCK FOR FOUR MONTHS!!! Finally, on December 19th, I went to pick it up, only to discover that he had completely destroyed this piece of art. He took it upon himself to cut the pendulum short by 6 inches, and to completely remove, trim, and reposition a natural wood twig that was the primary component of the piece's design. In short, the clock was completely destroyed. I have now had to ship it back to the artist who created it (in 1990), in the hope that she can either repair it or create a new one in a very similar design. I do not think Alex did this intentionally or negligently, but he doesn't seem to have the skills or the respect for art that was needed. The first, repair of an antique family heirloom a few years ago and more recently, the repair of a wristwatch a couple of weeks ago. Both experiences were excellent. I went to Kensington Clock and Watch on July 23rd 2017 located at 10426 Armory Ave, Kensington, MD 20895 with my friend Karin for the repair of her two-tone ladies Rolex watch estimated as $9000. We left the watch with ALEX so he can give us the estimate for its repair. He called us back on July 25, 2017 and gave an estimate of $600 for the overhaul including fix balance, over hold, main spring and water resistance. I went back to Kensington Clock and Watch on July 25, 2017 and asked for the Rolex watch to be given back. Alex came down and took the watch out of a brown bag and hand me over the watch. I placed it my glove compartment wrapped in tissue paper. Apparently, they were expecting us to give them the order to fix it so they put the back cover lose and didn't tighten it fully with when Alex returned Rolex back to me. We thought $ 600 was high so I posted the same on Yelp seeking estimates from other local jewelers. Sacramento Jewelers in Arlington gave us an estimate of $450; For the same that Alex quoted $600 for. So, I took the watch to Sacramento Jewelers on July 29th in Arlington. Once the master Jeweler looked at the watch he told me that the back cover is missing. I was bit shocked as the last person who took the back cover off was Yarkov at the Kensington Clock and Watch. It's difficult to take the back cover off and same way it is difficult to put it back. They just hand tighten it back. We had the Rolex for few days considering what to do. So, I called Rolex and they advised that I take to their certified repair place. I had 8-10 watches that needed new batteries and one antique that I was hoping to have restored. Their website advertised $7.25 for battery and professional installation while you wait. The guy told me $12.95 for each battery and refused to honor the advertised price. Told me that was an old ad and prices go up, blah blah blah. He was so rude I took my watches and left. He had also been rude to the man who was ahead of me, an 80 year old black man. They had charged him $15 for a battery and damaged his watch in the process. I mention the customer's race because he paid $3 more than what I was quoted. I'm white. Can't imagine any other reason for the difference in price. I have filed a complaint with the county consumer affairs people based on their failure to honor advertised prices. read more

Took my kitchen clock to @ Kensington Clock & watch repair on Friday. Was told it would take two days to repair. 2hrs later I get a call it's ready. Ok now I'm home, I'll pick it up tomorrow. Saturday get a call to come pick up my clock. No can do. Sunday, I'm out all day. Get another call come get your clock. No can do. Monday another call. Do these people think that I'm not going to pick it up and stick them with the $14.00 balance or what! The owner hung up on me. I took a good mens watch 3 years ago for a part replacement and returned or calle and was told it was on backorder. The watchmaker stopped responding to my texts and emails. The staff "knows nothing." The absent owner "has no phone" and does not respond to my emails. Today I went to the shop and was told to leave. They have no intention of teturning my watch. read more

Here's what just happened. My metal watchband broke so I walked into Kensington Clock and Watch. Even though it his day off, the repair man works at my band carefully for 10 or 15 minutes so that it is as good as new. When I asked where I should make my payment, he waved me away. Free. Ignore the negative reviews from the white-privileged rich a-holes. This is the ONLY place I take my watches for repair. Yakov especially is the sweetest and most knowledgeable in his craft. This is like something out of an odd Dickens book. The place has all kinds of clocks on the wall. The price tags are sky high and they are covered with a thick coating of dust. You have to sign in and wait on a masking tape mark on the floor to be called to the desk. For watch repair, you go to the back and wait. I had the internet special coupon which was like 5.00 for one watch and $4.00 for the other watches. I loaded them up. Okay, shut up, I have a small watch addiction, but I only wear them one at a time. The watches were repaired with ease and there was only one watch that could not be fixed. It makes sense that it was the piece of caca watch that my former employer gave me, so whatever. We also wanted them to price out the repair of a clock that I bought at Kirklands for about $7.99. They took the Kirklands clock behind this curtain and told us to wait for the estimate. After about 40 minutes, they bring the Kirklands clock back with an estimate for $45.00 repair. Needless to say, we took the broken clock back. Then we went on ebay and bought the pieces and repaired it ourselves for about $3.99. Yes, they want to take all kinds of information just for the estimate and I did not give it to them because I did not need them calling me about my Kirklands clock. I really do not like aggressive follow up like that...just repair my watches with my cheap-o coupon and we'll be swell! read more

Took my high end Tag watch in four or more times, have spent over $600.00 in repairs. They now want me to pay for the same work done before by these same people, to the tune of $300.00. After going to another watch repair and having the work looked at it is questionable if the work stated was really done. Please by all means get a second look at your watch before you have these crooks do your work. I should have gone with my hunch feeling soon as I walked inside this store, you will know the same feeling when you step inside......Used car salesman!!! He repaired my 40 year old Rolex and it is running like new. He quoted a price before he started working on it, and there were no surprises when I came to pick it up. read more

I agree with the reviewer who gave this business only 1 star. I'd prefer not to give it any stars at all! As soon as the "watch maker" said, "Coupon is not good for this watch," and sneered at the manufacturer, I should have exited immediately. I found the two guys who work there not very polite and overbearing, not seeming to pay any attention to what the customer is saying. The store itself is rather dark and musty-smelling and has no signs indicating, for example, which credit cards are accepted, which is the correct door for customers to enter, and the fact that the "downstairs guy" is not the one who will actually deal with you (he only takes your money; you have to walk up a flight of steps to work with the "watch maker"). In addition, they would not take my credit card and told me, "You haven't spent enough" and demanded cash or a check. My bill was $19. I just looked at their record on the Better Business Bureau website (search for "Kensington Clock Repair") and saw there have been 6 complaints since 2010 and their rating is an F. I was so creeped out in dealing with these me that I'm grateful I didn't have to leave any of my property with them! read more

I've been looking around the DC area for a place to get my watch battery replaced, and this turned out to be the cheapest one I could fine. While most places quoted me $15-20, this place said it would be anywhere from $6-9 but to come in so they can tell me exactly how much depending on the battery. It turned out to be $9.54 tax included, which wasn't bad at all. The watch man replaced the battery in 5 minutes, whereas some places required a pickup at a later date. They have a coupon on their website for $5 battery replacement, but they said my battery doesn't apply to it so I'm not sure which ones would. Kinda bummed. It's not really Metro accessible, but it's really close to the MARC Kensington Station. From the Red Line, you can take the Ride On 5 or 6 to get there I believe and it's about 10 min bus ride away. The building is right behind the Safeway building. So, if you're in the Kensington area, this is a great place for your watch fixes. They also have a bunch of clocks there for sale as well. read more

I am surprised that this shop doesn't have a higher rating, based on my own experience. It just goes to show that the Internet by no means gives any sort of objectivity. Every time I've gone here they have resolved my watch problems quickly and much more cheaply than I expected. Example: I bought a high quality wrist watch at my church -- it was sort of an antique, and higher quality than I could have afforded new -- but it needed to be adjusted to my wrist size. It took them about 50 seconds to complete the job and they charged me a pittance (I can't remember the exact amount, it was a few bucks). I know literally nothing about watches: they could have easily said "come back tomorrow" and charged me twenty bucks and I would have paid it. I don't know what people want. The people here, far as I can tell, know what they are doing. It's a small business run by people who have a personality. They don't fawn all over you with department store smiles (back when there were still department stores). Would you rather have everything done by Amazon? Geez. read more

Do not patronize Kensington Clock and Watch repair for any reason.  I have an expensive Rolex watch that is now worthless because of the actions of this shop's repairman.  I brought my Rolex watch to Kensington Clock and Watch for repair.  The repairman attempted to repair my watch for a period of over a year but despite his many promises, it never worked properly.  During that time, there were many delays --months went by when he held the watch and I was unable to pick it up. With few exceptions, over the period of more than a year, I did not get any response from the repairman, the owner nor anyone else in management to my many emails, calls and visits to the shop. Finally they admitted they could not fix the watch and returned the non-working watch and the money I paid for the repairs. To get the refund, I agreed they could take out the parts they had inserted to try to repair the watch, and I asked for my original parts to be returned to me.  Despite repeated requests and their agreement to give me back the Rolex parts they removed from the watch, I never got back the parts--which themselves were worth a great deal of money.  I then took the watch to an authorized Rolex repair shop.  They refused to work on the watch because there were Chinese aftermarket parts in the watch.  I took it to another Rolex dealer and they confirmed that there were NO Rolex parts left in the case. That is, the original Rolex movement was removed and replaced with an inexpensive Chinese movement. There was also additional damage done to the watch. The Chinese movement was glued into the case ring at an angle.  The dial and date disc were not attached to the movement and the back is holding everything in place instead of the case screws as in the original design.  Further, the cheap Chinese aftermarket mechanism was glued into the case in a way that it cannot be removed without damaging the case.  This watch had been worth at least $5000 and now cannot be repaired and is worthless.  The management of the shop has never responded to any of my attempts to contact them. The shop is not honest nor competent.  Again, don't patronize this store for any reason. read more

I initially thought this was a good company. I was mistaken. I took a clock there for a repair which was guaranteed for a year. Within a few weeks, the clock still would not keep time. I was able to return the clock to Amazon so I requested a refund of the clock repair charges from Kensington Clock and Watch. The woman who first answered the phone was difficult to understand so she gave the phone to another person. That gentleman was worse. He tried to blow me off by telling me they had lots of customers and then he hung up on me as I was speaking. I now have to file a dispute with my credit card company. A company that won't stand behind their work and then mistreats a customer is one that all consumers should stay clear of. read more

Aside from being a local small business, this place has few redeeming qualities. My husband and I have brought several watches in for basic things, battery replacement mainly. Most recently, we brought several watches in over the summer and by winter all of the batteries had gone dead. We took the watches to a different jeweler who was surprised at the poor quality of the batteries that Kensington Clock and Watch has installed. One star is too many, but I couldn't leave fewer. This place is a total ripoff. I took an antique mantle clock in for a minor repair (broken pawl). It cost me over $250 and four weeks to get it fixed. When I brought it home and placed it where I've had it for over 10 years, it would run for a few minutes to a few hours, then stop. I took it back in and the guy was very rude. He accused me of not knowing how to balance the clock properly (did I mention it worked fine in this location for over 10 years?). He finally agreed to look at it and kept it for about 3 days. The store called back and left a message that it was working fine. We couldn't pick it up that day, and the next day they left another (quite rude) message to pick the clock up - there was no problem. We picked it up but it still wouldn't run properly. We took it to another clock shop who found the problem in minutes - all of the bearings were dry and binding. He lubricated the bearings and pointed out that one of the bearings needed replacement (est. $500) but it should work fine. We brought it home and it's been running fine for several months now. It's obvious to me that Kensington Clock (who had previously cleaned and lubricated the clock according to their recommended schedule) did a poor job, resulting in dry bearings and eventually one which will need replacement. And rather than admit they screwed up, they tried to tell me I didn't know how to balance the clock. There is NO WAY I would EVER go back to them. read more

Today was my third visit here. I've gotten a watch crown replaced, links in a band removed, and a battery replaced. I'm always happy with the service and prices. The staff here are very knowledgable and explain what they are doing. They've also cleaned up and polished things free of charge. I will definitely keep coming here with any watch or clock repair needs and will probably talk to them before any future watch purchases for advice. read more
