After extensive research, I was lucky to come across Kent's Kanines. Deborah and I had a long phone conversation regarding Gus's first grooming experience where the groomer had muzzled Gus. He was traumatized. Deborah's approach to Gus was measured, calm and comforting. The Michelangelo of Groomers - What can I say? I believe we have the very best groomer here in San Francisco!!!! We first met Deborah Kent when Bella joined our family soon after the start of the pandemic. At five months, Bella was a cute little Yorkie, just under four pounds and full of energy. Unfortunately, she was also a bundle of hair, matted to the point that neither a comb nor a brush would untangle it. So, we searched for an experienced groomer who could help us with the problem. We found Debbie through her website www.kentskanines.com; when she visited our home and saw Bella's tangle of hair, she recommended starting with two sessions so as to not overwhelm our puppy. We understood the wisdom in that suggestion and so Debbie spent that first session with Bella in her lap as she performed the de-matting process, all the while talking quietly and soothingly to her. She also asked us to sit with them, not only so that Bella would feel more comfortable but also so she could teach us how to groom Bella, which was something we had not been at all successful in doing. And, during that two hour session, Debbie's expertise, professionalism and devotion to her work quickly became apparent to us. Debbie returned the next day to introduce Bella to the bathing and haircut process. At first, Bella tried to resist but she soon learned to be comfortable as Debbie worked and that has been the case ever since. Now, Debbie visits our house every six weeks and, due to how expertly she introduced Bella to grooming, Bella is now a pro at standing patiently on the grooming table. Debbie has been hand-stripping our Norwich Terrier, Ollie, for three years and we can't imagine anyone else grooming him. Debbie has become a close confidant on all things dog grooming, health, safety, and behavior. Hand-stripping is a very specialized and time consuming type of grooming that requires a high level of experience, patience, and skill. When Debbie comes to your home to groom your dog, you are able to see in person how much command she has over her craft. You are also able to see how much she cares about your dog and how your dog's safety and well-being are a top priority. Debbie has a calm, no-nonsense personality which helps high energy dogs "slow down" in her presence. Ollie is very excitable but when Debbie comes over, he knows what to do, how to behave, and what is expected of him. She is incredibly in-tune with dogs and is quick to think of alternatives when something challenging presents itself on the grooming table. During one of Ollie's last grooming sessions he became quite agitated when Debbie tried to clip his nails. It didn't even phase Debbie. She calmly put down the clippers and proceeded to file his nails. She strives to get the job done while ensuring your dog is well taken care of. She will never push a dog beyond what they're comfortable with. She is meticulous with both her work and how she leaves your home. After each session, she spends at least 15 minutes vacuuming the hair and fur from grooming and ensures that everything in your home is exactly the way it was before she arrived. For seven years now, I have been fortunate to get in home grooming from Kent's Kanines. I've enjoyed watching the hand stripping process from the comfort of home, being reassured that my dog was handled with care and in a safe manner. The proprietor, Deborah Kent, offered flexibility offering to come on weekends when necessary. I always felt I was able to trust her with my home and pup. When I first found Deborah, my pup was in quite the state. She is a rescue and her coat had suffered being clipped, and in my search for a hand stripping groomer, I had let her coat grow exceedingly long. Debbie certainly had her work cut out for her, particularly as Chelsea growled and snapped when being handled. These days you would never know this history by looking at Chelsea. Her coat is amazing. So glad that I made the choice to use Debbie for hand stripping. Chelsea has a colorful and healthy coat that looks undeniably adorable. Also Debbie has helped Chelsea become just the sweetest dog you'd ever want to meet. No more growling or snapping. In short, Chelsea has been transformed. Sadly, I will be moving out of state. I wish I could take Debbie with me, but alas will have to find a new groomer. Debbie has been helpful in finding and screening for one, though I'm pretty well certain they won't match the grooming skill and dog handling ability that she has. I was looking for a groomer for my puppy for their first grooming. I found this website that has a list of the most recommended groomers in SF. I chose her because she goes to your home and since it will be his first time I thought it would be less traumatic for my dog. When I spoke to her, she spend several minutes talking about my puppy most of which it was she telling me what my trainer had told me was wrong. ( he had told me to start getting him used to the grooming process (hairbrushes, clippers, eye stains) when he was tired and almost sleepy. Apparently, this made no sense to her and she even tried to google his name to find out who he was. I told her I had few choices besides pet smart to get my dog groomed in my area, so i had to remove the hair between his paws and remove some of his hair around his genitals in order to keep him clean. At this point she was mad that I had attempted to attempt to do something which I am not "qualified to do". I told her I had no choice since I trust myself more than petsmart and this is why I am looking for a groomer to do the complicated stuff. She again repeated that whatever my trainer had advised me was wrong I should not have done anything, instead I should've let his hair grow because it's not the end of the world if he has matted paws. We moved on from that conversation and she mentioned the trainers style that she prefers cesar milan and brandon mcwilliam (the guy that shakes a bottle of pennies to scare dogs away from doing a bad behavior ). She was not willing to travel to east bay because it's too far for her and she said if I find a friend that loves closer to SF then she will be willing to travel. I was still willing to work with her even though she has a high fee because she seems to have experience with my dog's hair that other groomers don't. We settled on a day and I said I will call back to confirm once I find a friend that will let us have the grooming session at their place. I called her 3 times to confirm and she never called me back. I changed around things on my schedule and my friend did the the same and was left with nothing but unprofessionalism. She may have all the experience but her attitude and unprofessionalism makes the 120 starting fee not worth it at all. I gave 3 stars because she seems very knowledgeable and she spent a few minutes talking about how she recommends I do the brushing at home for my dog. o read more

I have a Norwich, whose name is Mr. Brando and Debbie does hand Stripping which is a very tough and grueling job which takes 3 to 4 hours. I love that she comes to your home and she will do her work right in front of you. She is very social and she will also just listen to music or an audio book which I also do not mind. Stripping is a little pricey but I think she does a great job. I was very busy the other day and I stepped out and left her my home while I had multiple phone conversations and one 45 minute meeting. Also be ready for her to teach you something if you like or not, some people will think she is lecturing you but she is passionate and means well. read more

Debbie has been working with our puppy since she was three months old. We started because STARR, our little Havanese, didn't have all of her shots yet and we didn't want to bring her into a grooming salon. But after getting to know Debbie and seeing the outstanding job that she does, we just kept continuing with her. She comes to our house and not only spends her time grooming our dog but also has taught me how to bathe her properly and how to groom her so that I can get rid of any matting. Right now she weighs 8 lbs. Debbie is wonderful with puppies. She's the only groomer our dog has known. Because STARR has a lot of hair, she needs grooming about every five weeks. She was quite excitable at the beginning but she has really calmed down with Debbies style of working with dogs. Her grooming is fantastic. I can't recommend her more highly. read more

We have a Norwich terrier that needs to be hand stripped for grooming. I used to take our dog to a groomer in San Leandro who I thought was good at hand stripping. It turns out that groomer was pulling so much hair out in an unnatural way that it left scabs all over my dog's skin. I found Kent's Kanines online after an exhaustive search for a groomer who could properly hand strip a Norwich Terrier. From the first time meeting Debbie, she took one look at our dog and showed me all the bad and painful grooming our dog was exposed to before. You can tell that Debbie loves the dogs that she grooms and she is so careful and patient with them. She is incredibly sensitive to the needs of the dogs and makes sure that they are happy. She has given us so much helpful advice about our dog and is always a pleasure to chat with. The best part is that she comes to your house!! I have 2 young kids so having the ability to not have to drop off and pick up our dog from the groomers is a tremendous help. I like how responsive Debbie is and how friendly she is to work with. We were lucky to find Debbie after traumatic experiences with a mobile van dog groomer. Our Havanese puppy would shriek in the bath and periodically scream throughout the hair/nail cut process, to the point of shaking when she arrived for his monthly grooming. After the bad start as a puppy, it took about a year for Debbie to gain his trust and gently train him to tolerate the grooming experience, transforming him from a very anxious dog to a more peaceful dog. She was very open to me observing the entire grooming process and trained me to properly care for his coat in between visits. Debbie is very knowledgeable and professional in all aspects from start to finish -- from artistry with scissors to general dog health. I made the big mistake in trusting my animal in the hands of the devil. this woman by the name of Debbie was extremely rude and caused my dog to have major skin problems. I took my dog to the vet, witch told me that it was due to the products used on my animal. When i contacted Debbie i was told that i was wrong and i did not know what i was talking about. Everyone loves Debbie. She has become a friend to all species in our Mill Valley home, and somehow she makes us feel that we're her favorite people and dogs. Not only is she a lovely person, but her efforts to please us with her grooming are far beyond anything we've experienced. She knows how to bring out the best features in each dog, even those of unusual breeds like our border terriers. She has all the best professional characteristics, too. Yogi is our adorable rescue who came with a heart of gold and some rescue issues. The biggest was that he hated to be touched around his tail and rear. He has long hair (found him as a Tibetan mix) that needs to be groomed and cut, which was pretty much impossible to do. He would snap whenever someone approached his rear. Anti-anxiety medicine didn't help. His groomer fired him! In desperation, I started asking everyone with a long-haired dog and a decent haircut who they went to. One day, I stopped someone and found out her dog had also been ungroomable. I called Debby the next day and she performed what is pretty close to a miracle for someone like me who isn't a dog professional. He was difficult that first time and Debby still did a terrific job. She trained him over a period of months, and now he a good boy on the grooming table. Not only that, but whether or not a dog is difficult to groom, Debby is an excellent groomer. I get compliments on him from strangers every time I take him out after he's been groomed. Debby cares about your dog and the quality of her work. You can't beat that combination. read more

We met Debbie in a pet store soon after adopting our standard wire-haired dachshund. I had taken Burt to a local groomer a couple of times, with poor results: he'd been clipped (not stripped) and the process of being at the groomer's for hours, with loose dogs of all sizes running around, was extremely stressful for him. Debbie handed me her card and pointed out that he had been groomed like a schnauzer, rather than a dachshund (who knew?) so I checked out her very impressive website and promptly set up an appointment with her. She is the consummate professional. She knows her stuff and she is extraordinarily talented. Burt adores her, and the process of grooming is so relaxing for him that he sometimes falls asleep! He looks like he is supposed to look, according to the standards of the breed. You might think it would be awkward or messy to do in-home grooming, but it is so much better for Burt and for us.
