You absolutely have to take a visit to Kentucy Artisan Distillery. The tour itself is very good with lots of solid insights into their process and a good selection of tastings at the end. But the highlight may be a trip to the "Clubhouse" just down the road. We had the unbelievable opportunity to spend what turned into a couple of hours hanging out with Marshall, a distiller, and Jack, the "mixologist", learning about the nuances of Kentucky Artisan and their various labels, the bourbon business, doing a barrel tasting, and walking out of there with some of the absolute best bourbon we enjoyed during our 4 day, 12 distillery visit. A small, low profile distillery that focuses on Jefferson's Bourbon. I toured here many years ago and it was an informal, no frills experience. Very pleasant and I was able to try Highspire Rye whiskey in addition to Jefferson's offerings. I also bought a bottle of Whiskey Row bourbon, which is not widely available. We had a wonderful experience touring Kentucky Artisan Distillery. I originally booked this tour because we love Jefferson's Ocean and Jefferson's Reserve Twin Oak, but we discovered several other great bourbons during our visit. Since we were the only guests on the tour, we had plenty of time to ask questions and enjoy a more personalized experience. We especially enjoyed our interactions with Sheila, our guide, and Philip, who was working the counter. We even had the opportunity to meet Jade, the Master Distiller, who treated us to a tasting of his Trackside Bourbon. By the end of the visit, we left with a bottle of Trackside Bourbon and two bottles of Jefferson's. I would highly recommend this tour and the distillery to anyone visiting the area. read more

In contrast to the other large bourbon distilleries in our area, Kentucky Artisan Distillery is a boutique distillery that produces more specialty bourbons for the big bourbon makers. It's a shorter tour in a smaller space with tastings at the end. I'm one of those annoying "question askers" and the tour guide answered all of my questions easily. I learned even more about bourbon from being in a smaller tour group. This is a very friendly laid-back operation. Since I took their tour, they've added on a café and expanded the public area to make it even nicer. I'll take our out-of-town guests there soon so I can see the improvements myself! read more

You have to go here! We did the Clubhouse Barrel Tasting Experience and we absolutely loved it! There is just something about pulling all your samples right out of the barrel. I've done a lot of distillery tours/tastings and I absolutely loved this. After the tasting you are given the option to fill your own bottle from the barrel you tasted. I loved their 4 grain mash bill and I bought a bottle of that. Our tasting guide was great and he made us some awesome cocktails at the bar as well. He and my wife had some great conversations about cooking as well. Very personable. We really enjoyed our experience here and would certainly recommend to anyone. read more

This was my third time on the tour. It has been changed since the previous times. We now entered from a speakeasy-ish entrance which was cool! We received a sample in there immediately. A suggestion is to not rush that part. We need time to acclimate and adjust. Our walking tour went a different route through the distillery. Again, don't rush it! Another suggestion is to use a microphone. It will as very hard to hear, at times impossible, in the distillery room. It's such a loud space and the tour guide kept turning her head away from us. The sampling room was awesome as usual. Thanks for the water options (would have liked more drinking water). Overall a good, local tour worth going on at least once! read more

We came to the KAD Clubhouse that's just down the way from the Distillery. We did the barrel thieving/tasting experience and had a blast. There was a group here on a bachelor trip as well. This is a small and young distillery off the beaten path. The tour is not too long - their distillery is located in an old ice cream distribution warehouse. The distillery is not big and we were there when they weren't distilling so it was very quiet. The tour guides are mostly retired enthusiasts who are very personable. The bourbon offerings are not high proof but they do have one unique product offering and that's a bourbon that is aged in Kentucky for 3 years and sent on a ship for another 8-9 months (still in its barrel). It passes the equator 4 times. We tried 2 different sailings and the 32 barrel pick was excellent. Nice tour to add to any Bourbon Trail experience and loved the novel product. read more

Jefferson's is some of my favorite bourbon. It's always been tasty, and amazing, and this tour just cemented it. First off - Bunghole Patty. She was AMAZING. Funny, friendly, she was informative and kept us laughing. She had our group nailed. It's a simple place - I won't bore you on tastes, either you like bourbon (and if you do, you should swing by), or you don't, in which case, it's not for you! I won't tell you the histories, the shark tracking, the voyages of the bourbon - that's all in depth on the tour. Just know - the bourbon is good, the tour is short, sweet, informative and fun. Then you can go down the street to see the three forest trolls, or go the opposite way and get a beer and a bite! read more

This is a very nice small local distillery. It was my first time to visit and I went looking for some Christmas gifts for family. They have a complete stock of all their varieties of Bourbons. I had heard about the select Oceans bourbon and decided to make it my choice for gifts. It has one of the most unique stories of how it's aged (at Sea) than any other bourbon I've heard of. If you want to experience a top-knotch distillery tour, this is the one! The tour is very personal rather than commercial, but because it's smaller than the big guys, you just might meet and talk with the actual distillers themselves. The master distiller, Jade Peterson, also has his own bourbon called Trackside Distilling. KAD also just introduced their first bottled-in-bond bourbon! This is a very small distillery, but it has a quaint, cozy little tasting room. Our guide was entertaining and informative. He was able to answer every question thrown at him. His knowledge and experience was helpful. They gave you quite a bit more to taste than many distilleries. I enjoyed seeing and tasting Jefferson's, the primary brand they produce. The downside is that they do not serve the alcohol they produce on site. Also, there's no food. So it's more of an educational experience than a social one. read more

If you like distilleries, you will LOVE this experience. The staff is friendly and will guide you through the workings of their distillery. Tours have a "behind the scenes" feel and the staff isn't afraid to interact with the guest and answer any questions you may have. Oh, and Patty... she's a real treasure.
