Shoyu Mazesoba

Food was amazing! Me and the wife were visiting from California, and this place is definitely in the top 3 Mazemen/Mazesoba on my list! Ambiance is a small, modern restaurant feel. It was nice! And the service was amazing too, the friendly lady was super attentive and accommodating! Would definitely come here again if ever in the area!

I've never had mazesoba before, and i had been expecting the cold buckwheat soba noodles. These are served warm, with a poached egg and other toppings. You are supposed to add vinegar and chili to taste, and mix it then eat it. I really loved the flavor of the yuzu shio. The flavors blended well and it was really tasty, the waiter brought us rice when we were almost done to mix in and finish the rest of the sauce with! Loved it!!

Been to mazesoba twice. Both times I ordered one of the mazesobas. In general the noodles come out super quickly. They are well flavored, noodles are cooked just right and are very chewy. Highly recommend the thai spice noodles. You can also request an extra bowl of rice with each order of noodles. However, keep in mind the rice is an extra small bowl and does not taste particularly great. I had hoped it was a one time thing but definitely could taste it the second time I went too. Service was also just ok. Requested not to be put at a high top table with half the restaurant empty but they were unwilling to combine two tables. Additionally prices are accurately reflected on their menus. Overall, for the price of $20 per bowl I don't think it's worth it. That said if someone asks to go I wouldn't say no.

I had been following this mazesobaまぜそば place for months, and walking in to hear both the waiter and the chef speaking Mandarin was somewhat jarring for a Japanese restaurant. Yuzu Shio: The noodles were properly al dente; onions and Chinese onions added freshness, and the runny-yolk egg was creamy and aromatic. However, the "Yuzu Shio柚子塩" seasoning leaned unexpectedly sweet, lacking both acidity and savoriness. A few circles of vinegar helped restore balance and depth. Nagoya名古屋 mazesoba is said to have roots in Taiwanese cuisine. Although this was my first time trying mazesoba, as a Chinese diner, I was surprised to found a sense of familiarity in the slow-braised chashu叉焼, soft, tender, and sweet, which carried a profile reminiscent of authentic Taiwanese lu rou滷肉 (braised pork). Replacing the original minced or diced pork with thick-sliced chashu was a double-edged sword: it improved texture and richness, but the larger pieces made the sauce harder to coat the noodles evenly. A bowl of rice would be served at the end to soak up the remaining sauce, but the rice was overly soft and became slightly soggy.

I've visited this restaurant twice and had mixed experiences. The first time, I ordered the yuzu shio mazesoba which was pretty unique since I hadn't seen this flavor of mazesoba before. The yuzu added a nice citrus note that balanced the saltiness of the dish. However, I found it a bit weird that the dish included leafy greens, as that isn't traditionally part of mazesoba. On my second visit, I tried the mentaiko cream mazesoba which I didn't enjoy. The sauce tasted like mayonnaise, and the consistency was more watery than expected. My friends' dishes also all had noticeably different sauce consistencies. Overall, my experience here has been fairly average, which is why it gets 3 stars.

This place is known for their mazesoba, which is a Japanese dry ramen (with the egg yolk used as the sauce). I ordered the vegetable mazesoba (10/10), which has kabocha, tofu, and truffle oil. My friend got the yuzu shio mazesoba, but it was a bit sour & lacked toppings. Overall really good flavor, giving 4/5 as it's a bit expensive for what you get.

Yuzu Shio and Mentaiko Cream Mazesoba

The noodles are perfectly al dente, really creamy and umami sauce with lots of flavors. The toppings are generous. Pork was well cooked and seasoned. Enjoyed the little portion of rice they gave to finish the sauce with. Overall very satisfying meal. Service was quick and the ambiance of the restaurant is cute and lively.

Cute and casual interior, similar to Futago Udon next door. The only played throwback Taylor Swift songs. The staff were helpful and efficient. I've never tried mazesoba before, but I thought the food was very good, with generous portions. I can see myself craving the yuzu shio very soon...

This is my second time at Kenzouka because my first time was so memorable! This casual spot specializes in broth-less ramen with a variety of toppings, and additional delicious offerings. I continue to find this place a unique experience as they offer a free bowl of rice near the end the meal to mix with any sauce left over in the bowl. My partner and I ordered two Mazesoba bowls, an appetizer, and a sushi roll. I ordered the Mentaiko Cream Mazesoba. It was topped with slow braised pork chasu that melted in my mouth. The dish was very unique and light tasting. It didn't leave me feeling heavy. My partner ordered the Tan Tan Mazesoba which had spicy minced pork, chili oil, and topped with a poached egg. The egg added a creaminess to the sauce and coated all the noodles. It was mild in spice and heavy with flavor! We also had the fried chicken wings appetizer and the Pink Lady roll. Everything was devoured, including the free bowl of rice. I arrived on Saturday around 630PM which was during the busy dinner hour. However, I only needed to wait a few minutes before seating. The shop's soft lighting, handmade paper cranes, and bright colored murals created a comfortable vibe. Service is really fast and friendly. There is plenty of street parking nearby and other shops in the area to shop or end the experience with dessert.

We got tan tan, mentaiko cream, and shoyu mazesoba. Noodles had a great chewiness and each bowl was very flavorful. My pork chashu was well seasoned and so tender. This is comparable to Kajiken, a mazesoba chain from Japan. Decent amount of seating for small to medium size groups. No issues with service.

Steven W.

3.5-4/5 with meter parking and not a large restaurant. I didn't see it on the menu but apparently you need to spend a minimum of $15 per person so remember that. Service was ok it wasn't friendly. The soba was not too bad but the chashu was a little dry.

I wasn't too impressed with Kenzoku - the price was pretty high for what we received, the taste wasn't too strong, and we felt a little bit rushed. I will say that the food came out spectacularly quickly - maybe 5 minutes after ordering, but we came an hour before close and felt very rushed throughout the meal even though we left 15 minutes before close. I got the Yuzu Shio mazesoba, which was $19 and came with chashu, scallion, mixed greens, onions, minced garlic, sesame seeds, and a poached egg. My partner ordered the Mentaiko Cream Mazesoba ($21), and their dish tasted very strongly of yuzu flavor, while mine had no yuzu flavor at all - it almost felt like they mixed up the broths, but all of the other toppings in our bowls were correct. I was a bit sad about the lack of yuzu in my noodles, but the chashu was also cut with the grain so the mead was a bit stringy and chewy. Other than that though, the greens tasted fresh, the noodles were nice and springy, and I did appreciate the scoop of rice we were offered at the end of the meal to finish up the leftover broth. I think both of the negatives (lack of yuzu and chashu cut) can be easily fixed, and maybe the yuzu issue was a mixup. Without those issues, I can easily seeing myself giving this a 4 or 5 in the future! We're very close so we will be back to try this another time. I will say that my partner also ordered the Matcha Einspanner Ice Latte and it was delicious!

Free rice portion for the remaining toppings

So glad I tried this place out!! I am not a big ramen person but mazesoba hits different! I don't think you can find anything similar in Boston: think thick ramen noodles in a savory umami sauce with lots of hearty toppings. I got the Tan Tan and the hamachi torch roll. Both were so delicious. A little pricey in my opinion for the level of service (nice but not super attentive or anything to write home about). Portion sizes are decent but not big enough for leftovers. Just for myself I spent over $40 after tax and tip and didn't have leftovers. I will definitely be back as a treat!

First time here and it was great! We did the AYCE all-you-can-eat on a Monday (they only do it…read moreMonday and Tuesdays) - got there around 7:30p and even though it was very full, we got seated quickly with a table for 3. It's $50 for the regular AYCE or $80 for the Premium AYCE. We opted for the former, and it was plenty great. We have done lots of AYCE sushi and I will say this is the BEST of them - I think it's because it's the same grade sushi as they would normally do Ala carte on other nights. The $50 menu had plenty of sashimi and regular nigiri (sushi with rice) options and some Thai too. We had mostly the sashimi Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Octopus, a few rolls, some edamame, gyoza, shumai. My favorites were the salmon, as the cuts were large, thick and amazing silky, and the gyoza, as it was perfectly crispy. The Pad Thai was bit way too sweet for my taste - a skip for me next time. The decor is very nice - reminded me of a dive Tokyo bar. Service was quick and very attentive. We will be back!

Have been hearing about their Mon & Tue AYCE, so went on to try it a month or so ago. With what…read moreseems to be a recent price increase, now $60++ allows access to a good variety of sushi/sashimi, on top of apps, ramen, poke bowls, and cooked rice/noodle dishes. Whereas $80++ offers diners a set of amount of uni, plus unlimited amount of everything else, wagyu included. Sounds like a good deal, especially when one can eat a lot. Even as we are no longer Team Eat Till You Burst, we went for the premium, mainly for the nicer cuts such as toro and wagyu, and because uni!! Jumping in shortly after 5pm, we were promptly seated, marked a bunch of stuff on paper, and soon after submission, we got food brought to our table. It was a decent meal overall, so why 3 stars? Let's recap. Menu variety is fantastic, though of course we didn't get "one of everything", coz that's simply impossible. While the premium did cover a lot of grounds, it would have been nice if they also included anago (sea eel) which is currently only available on the a la cart menu, and maybe even offer couple lesser-known items such as monk fish liver app, sea grapes, off-the-beaten-path fish cuts, what have you. Would be happy even if we only get an allotment of those like we do with the uni. Now, service - great overall. Servers circulated around and were alert of customers' needs. Approached at appropriate times to take our order sheets, refill water, provide new order sheets, and ask if wanted more food. So kudos on that. Their denotation of serving "regular portion" of cooked food had us hesitant in ordering, since we didn't want to be wasteful (or use our limited stomach space for dishes we can easily get elsewhere). But from other tables' orders as well as the one noodle dish that we ended up getting, it seems that the portion size was what I would like to see at AYCE places -- at least 1/3 to 1/2 smaller than regular size, where 3-4 people can each have a couple bites "just to try". However, to think if that is what they call "regular portion", then it is definitely "Brookline pricing" on a la carte, which I would not recommend one to do such things on these items. Food is fantastic in general; we got a variety of stuff, and everything was really of top quality and taste. The meal would have been a "highly recommended" if they didn't serve the uni that we got. Out of the 12 pcs of uni sushi, all of them were... while not "foul" to a point where one cannot safely consume, they were definitely more sub-par than "ok but not great". Colors aside (which I understand there can be a range depending on origins and such), the uni was a "splat" of yellow stuff on rice, without distinct shape of the flesh. On top of the fishy smell (I'm talking about slightly ammonia-ish), the presentation and taste-texture upon them hitting our tongues... really left the ENTIRE room to be desired. In retrospect, we should have sent them back even if they weren't going to replace them. But instead, we stupidly forced ourselves to shove them all down in cowardly silence, then ordered another round of wagyu just to make us feel a little better about it. Yes, we weren't smart as customers. But if the restaurant is going to charge $100++ per person (after tax and tip), someone from the kitchen should have known better than pushing this thing out for customers to deal with. In their defense, yes, the uni itself was still "edible" in a sense that it didn't make us sick, but I'd maintain that better judgment should have been made. Once the shell was cracked open and you see this pale-gray yellow mush, it should have been decided that it is better repurposed, than be served straight to your customers as your star/featured product. As seen in other diners' experiences, it could just have been a one-off mishap, so I'm not knocking them entirely. But I do hope the restaurant would improve on their QC accordingly. It was such a disappointing low point in an otherwise wonderful meal.

As this was limited pop up, we did wait about 1-1.5 hours to be able to get inside and order the food, but it was a relatively organized experience. We got sat at the bar at the side where the waiters/waitresses entered/exited which was mildly annoying and flagging them to get more water was a little hard as well. I didn't order the limited bowl as that's not usually my choice of flavor for ramen broths but I got to try it. It was very mild and had a nice taste but still wouldn't be my go to order. For myself, I got the spicy miso which was nice and flavorful. My friends also ordered the Takoyaki and the Zangi Fried Chicken which were both good. For dessert we also ordered the Monako Ice Cream and Hojicha Chiffon Cake. The Hojicha Chiffon cake didn't have as much flavor as I would've liked and the ice cream that came with it, kind of just overpowered it, should get hojicha ice cream with this one to taste more hojicha.

We got the beef noodle soup which was excellent (albeit not expected in a Japanese restaurant!). It was actually a little spicy. Came with lots of beef and a flavorful and rich broth. We got two of the special rolls, Kiss of Fire and (I think) Torched Yellowtail, which were both tasty. No complaints there! For our appetizer we got sashimi salad, composed of strips of several kinds of raw fish (salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellowtail) and some surimi and avocado on top of a bed of greens.
