We opted to rent bikes from Kerr Bikes over using the app run bikes sponsored by Nike outfitted around the city. Situated right by the water, the rental center consists of a little building surrounded by a whole lot of ride options - tandem bikes, surrey's for a squad of folks, choppers, tandem bikes for dates, all sorts of weird rides. There was a free "fix-it" zone for personal bike repairs and a snack bar with basic snacks. We were debating and trying to figure out pricing compared to the app, and ended up going with Kerr Bikes because it seemed easier than fussing about it. We paid $25 for a half-day rentals that got us four hours of bike time. They were closing at 7 and let us know we would need to bring the bikes back by then. After walking the bikes out to us, we were free to roam and explore. They gave us bike locks. Quality bikes. It was nice to be able to lock the bike up at any bike rack without the hassle of touching an app, rebooking bikes, counting minutes, or dealing with any of the other things. It was a lovely ride exploring the area. You have to return them to the center before they close, so it does take some management of where you will go. The proceeds support services for humans with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health challenges - so all in all even if for a short ride you end up paying a bit more, it goes to a worthwhile place. If you have a family, are looking for combo rides, and are ready to put your phone away to simply enjoy a day on wheels - all while supporting an organization that cares about Portland people - then this is the spot to go. So even though we're local, we finally rented a 4-person Double Surrey and did the tourist thing in Portland. The rental process is very easy. Located conveniently in front of the Salmon Springs fountain along the waterfront during the warm weather months, they have a variety of bikes to rent. Standard and tandem bikes, single and double surreys, deuce coupes, choppers, quad sports, and slingshots. They even have carriers if you want to tow your little ones. Unfortunately no coupons or discounts that I'm aware of, but they do take Visa and Mastercard, not American Express. You'll present your driver's license, sign a waiver and children under 16 are required to wear a helmet (OR law). Helmets are provided free of charge to everyone in your party. The surrey is easy to drive. There are two steering wheels in front, but only the one in the left side driver's seat works and has a hand brake. For locals with their own bikes, Kerr Bikes gets major bonus points for operating a FREE u-fix-it bike repair station. They provide the tools, so you can tune up or repair your bike. As someone who spends a lot of time along the waterfront, I will tell you that the only problem are the crowds. The path on the west side of the river is constantly filled with pedestrians, frequently with strollers and/or dogs, and cyclists. Almost all of the pedestrians are completely oblivious to cyclists and those moving at a faster pace. The process of navigating your large 'vehicle' around the shambling walkers can be a little frustrating at times. The surrey has a bell and we had to ring it A LOT. The Eastside Esplanade is a much more relaxing place to take your bike, but it also has a few ramps and hills. The rental is by the hour and most people can easily do the loop, crossing the Steel Bridge to the north and Hawthorne Bridge to the south, in 50 minutes or less. If you have extra time, my recommendation is to continue south on the eastside towards OMSI before heading back. You can bring your own food and drink if you want to stop for a snack during your journey, or you can purchase snacks at the rental booth. I've rented bikes on many trips to cities in the U.S. and abroad. It can be a wonderful way to see a city if you rent for a longer period of time. If you are a solo biker, you can connect to the Springwater Corridor on the east side and head south to bike along the river for miles. If you are just doing an hour rental and staying along the waterfront, you will really only get a little glimpse of Portland. But, it sure is a pretty glimpse. This was the perfect family activity by the waterfront! For our small family, the experience was very comedic and very stressful at times. When I reflect back on it, all I want to do is laugh. One would think a bike ride is supposed to be nice and relaxing. Well, we decided to go with a single surrey bike, which was definitely a unique experience. 2 "driver" (1 with an actual steering capabilities and the other steering wheel was for show). So, my 8-year old daughter wanted to drive a majority of the time, but was not the best driver, so there was some screaming involved because we almost veered off the path a couple times. There were some uphill climbs on the pathway, too, which my husband needed to get off the bike to push up the inclines, while myself or my daughter steered. OMG - those were stressful times! A great chance to see Portland from a seat of a bike! Well, in our case, we road around in a single surrey which was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life! For $25/per hour, we got our money's worth driving around the waterfront of Tom McCall Waterfront Park and crossed one of the bridges for a big loop around the waterfront. It was spectacular! What made it fun was how much effort we had to use to ride around. I worked the steering wheel since the second steering wheel is fake and my wife worked the pedals with me. We laughed so hard trying to negotiate around the waterfront between people walking, objects on the sidewalk, and other people cycling around the same time we were. There was pretty big hill that we had to get up and we used all of our power to get up it! We made it, but I talked a lot of mess to my wife that I was doing all the pedaling. Of course she put as much effort into as I did. It was all in all a great time! Definitely pedal around a little bit and use the brakes not too far away in case they start to make noise. You may have them adjust it before you trek out too far. You gotta leave one of your ID cards as collateral, but it was worth it! What a waist of money. We rented a double surrey bike believing it would be a great thing to do I portland. It turned out to be a nightmare. First of all they give us a bike with a flat tire (we didn't notice until someone hollered at us while passing us). Secondly the bike has no gears !! Even peddling on a straight surface felt terrible, and we are all in good shape and good bikers. Do not rent here. When we turned in the bike and made the complaint about the flat tire they young guy at the counter tried to blame it on us. What a fun way to enjoy the waterfront in Portland. Hubby and I rented a deuce coupe for $20/hr. The checkin/out process was easy and quickly we were on our way. Easy to ride and a lot of fun. They provide maps of trails or areas to go visit or you can do what you want as long as you obey bike laws. I've seen them as far as the Pearl District. We both realized that we were in need of some exercise about half way through the trip around the river but that did not diminish our fun. I want to give this place more than two stars; I feel like non-profits do *good work* and need our support. I think Kerr bikes is the place to go if you're looking for a silly romp around the esplanade in a surrey. Beyond that, this is a two star rating and not a one star rating because the employees helping us were polite, apologetic, and offered us a full refund for our troubles. For any reading this who want the short and simple, then here it is: this place does not maintain their bikes, and it could mean a very unpleasant rental for you and your family or friends. My family was visiting during their annual summer visit, and we wanted to give tandem riding a try. The plan was to rent three two person tandem bikes and ride the Springwater Corridor for a nice 10-miles or so. Right from the beginning *all three bikes* showed signs of trouble, the rear derailleur on each being totally out of alignment (this is where you feel a grindy sort of clicking as you pedal, and your bike seems to shift all by itself back and forth). After crossing Hawthorne bridge, it became apparent that one simply wouldn't shift, at all. Near OMSI, the first bike's chain came off the middle chainring. One 3 miles down Springwater the second bike's chain came off the middle chainring, and then again about 200 feet later. That second bike was mine, and when I was putting the chain back on each time, it was obvious that it had not seen a single drop of lube in months. It was bone dry. The powerlink, a special link on the chain that's used to easily take a chain apart, was bent open wide and *barely* holding the thing together. I want to be clear: this is a flaw in a chain that would be obvious to *anyone* performing an inspection or a routine maintenance. About 500 feet later, the chain snapped, and we were dead in the water. We called Kerr to tell them what was up, and the best advice they could offer us was to walk to Sellwood bike repair in reasonable walking distance. They were understaffed and couldn't really do anything more. I don't actually fault them for this; they're a non-profit and aren't exactly armed with a fleet of shuttles, and they assured us that whatever we may be charged for repairs would be reimbursed. The rest of an already long story short: we enjoyed our time in Sellwood while the shop repaired the bike with the broken chain, and then we rode back. On the way, the first bike whose chain came off gave us the same problem, again and again, and when the rental shop was finally in sight from the bridge, we sort of just shrugged, said "f**k it," and walked the bikes the rest of the way. When describing our problems with the bikes, we were told that most of the bikes weren't in the greatest of shape, and this was offered as if it was a defense: that our experience wasn't really all that bad because it *should have been expected*. Honestly, non-profit or not, if you're running a bike rental service and you can't maintain your bikes, then you should probably re-think some things. read more

During my first visit to Portland, I checked out the Saturday Market, now located at the riverfront and Tom McCall Park. Labor Day weekend was quiet compared to my Chicago and I rented a cross bike for just $10 for an hour. Both women staffers were very helpful and friendly. They stored my market bags and gave me a map. The bike was perfectly maintained, the trail on both riversides was perfectly clean and marked ... couldn't ask for better. read more

On a bright sunny day, we decided to get rent bikes from here and explore the many bridges across the river. It was almost towards the end of the day and their last hour but the staff here was v friendly and patient and we had a wonderful time cycling around and taking pictures. We had to return our bike by 7PM and were late by about 10 mins as there was detour we had to take to come back to the westside and being out of towners we were a bit lost. However, the staff here were v understanding. Didnt charge us anything extra and gave us a grace period. My family and I found ourselves needing to kill an hour and a half in downtown Portland on a very rainy day and the guys at Kerr Bikes loaded us into a surrey bike to ride around the waterfront park area. What a blast! Don't rent from Kerr: their bikes break down! You'll be stuck and will have to walk back with your bike! Today was a perfect day to rent a bike in Portland: the sun is out, Fleet Week is on, so I decided to take a bike ride around the Willamette River and watch the boats from afar; so I rent a bicycle from these guys. The bike itself looked fairly plain, but the wheels were solid, so I start my ride. Everything goes smoothly for the first twenty minutes: I cross the bridge, and go pretty far South into the Springwater Corridor, where I decide to turn around. And right at that moment, I feel the left pedal come loose and fall off! The nut holding it in place had come off too, of course, so after retracing my steps, I luckily find it lying on the pavement, and put the pedal back on. Now here is what happens when you try to reattach a pedal to a bike with a nut and without a wrench at your disposal: *it will come off again*. In other words, I had to inch my way back to the rental shack by stopping every 100 feet or so to re-fasten the nut. Do you think these people care to apologize? Absolutely not. "Oh, it happens" is pretty much all they could say. Well, I've ridden bikes all my life, not the fancy kind, and have never had a pedal come off like that. And... even if it does happen, if you're a decent shopkeeper, you at least acknowledge the inconvenience you caused your customer, and apologize for it. So there you go, I am the ninth reviewer on Yelp for your shop, and am happy to ding your rating a bit by posting this review. I hope none of the guys working there becomes a car mechanic! read more

Prior to my trip to ride in the Bridge Pedal I had researched bike rentals. Kerr's bikes had told me they only take reservations for large parties, but they had 100 bikes & they would have rentals available for a 24 hour day rental on the Saturday prior to the ride. I stopped by on the Friday before to make sure of availability, & was told if I wanted to rent a bike for Sunday I would need to rent it for a 2 day period. Instead of a $35 rental it would now me cost $60. I was very discouraged & went with another bike company. read more

My husband and I were visiting Portland last week, from out of state. It was a beautiful day and our wedding anniversary and we decided to rent a surrey with our toddler son. We left my husband's driver's license as collateral with the guy manning the store and went off for a ride. When we returned, my husband asked for his ID back and the guy gave him someone else's ID (same state license as my husband, but totally different person). My husband indicated that this wasn't his ID. The guy realized that he had returned my husband's ID to the previous customer, just before we came back. He called the other customer's listed number and got an error message that the number did not exist. We quickly realized what a terrible situation we were in - having my husband's ID given to someone else and having to travel back home by plane in a couple of days. After much effort at trying to get the other customer's real phone number (tried his credit card company, to no avail of course), we did not get anywhere. We had dinner reservations for our anniversary which we had to delay (and when we did end up there, our toddler was over tired, we were late and both in a foul mood - unable to celebrate!). Throughout all this, the guy who was helping us and later his manager Ryan, were unable to figure out what to do. Although the person who rented the bike to us was apologetic, the manager Ryan was actually pretty rude and nonplussed by the whole situation. Assuming that we were not going to get the ID back, we changed the rest of our travel plans to return to Portland early, cutting short our time on the Oregon coast, so that we could have extra time given the additional TSA screening my husband would have to go through, not having his ID. The next day, we were pleasantly surprised to hear from Ryan that he was able to find out the contact information for the other customer who never realized that he had been given the wrong ID until he was contacted by Kerr. I give Ryan a lot of credit for his google searching skills - he was able to locate the other customer and get the ID back, which we appreciate. What I cannot forget though, is what this bike company had us go through, just because they were so careless enough to have given the ID to the wrong person. Although Ryan was helpful in the end, his demeanor was very off putting - at the end, we still never received an apology from him. Rent bikes from these guys at your own risk!!!
