Came here around 2 pm on a Saturday with a party of 10. It was pretty busy and it took a bit for the server to get to us. We got 2 calamari apps for the table, they were pretty good. Didn't have any share plates so we were all kinda just picking at them lol. I shared the macadamia crusted mahi and the octopus with my mom. Both were good but I think the mahi was the best! The octopus had a bit too much char. Sauce on the Mahi had a great flavor and loved the coconut risotto. My mother in law got a Crème brûlée with coconut on top, delicious!! Ketch Grill & Taps is a branch of the Brigantine restaurant empire. This Point Loma location was located diagonally across from a flagship Brigantine on Shelter Island Dr. They have a nice vantage point right on the south shore of the America's Cup Harbor. The nighttime lighting was a bit dim around the building, but the inside had a modern wood look that resembled a giant open cabin with a back deck overlooking the water. Metered parallel parking was available, however the hours of enforcement ended after 5 or 6 pm. In addition to the all-day menu, a supper menu was available in the evening at the time of my visit and featured a variety of heartier main dishes. I chose the Seafood Paella Fritters as an appetizer that came as five fried stuffed rice balls with lobster, crab, shrimp, and peas along with a saffron and red pepper aioli dip. It was like a seafood version of arancini that was fried perfectly. For an entrée, I selected the Root Beer Braised Beef Short Rib in which the meat was marinated with craft root beer and accompanied with a sweet potato purée, onion confit, fried brussels leaves and hand-cut fries. What I liked best was that the beef came as tender slices and not shredded as I commonly see with a short rib entrée. The service was prompt, and the food came out quickly from the kitchen. My dining experience at Ketch Grill & Taps was worth a four star rating. read more

A nice view of the marina with inside or outside seating. Parking is scarce, especially if you're looking for free parking. We got lucky and found a spot a few blocks away. However, our table was awkwardly placed by a busy outdoor walkway, and my chair was bumped several times by people passing by. I would have preferred to wait until my scheduled reservation time if it meant securing a better table. My bf and I were staying at a hotel nearby and once we checked in we were hungry and decided to eat here since it was close by. It happened to be happy hour so we ordered the buffalo cauliflower and Brussel sprouts off the HH menu. We then also ordered the octopus (not on HH). Yesterday we came and we were a large party of 12, and they were very quick in getting us a table so that we could all sit together. Carson was our server and he did a great job at keeping the food coming and also checking on us. I had the shrimp and andouille linguini - so savory and delicious. As far as drinks go, the Spicy Pineapple Margaritas were sweet, a little bit spicy and got the job done. I also had a Raspberry Mojito, which was a little too carbonated for me, but still good. The table shared Fried Calamari, Sweet & Spicy Brussels, Freshly Shucked Oysters, Ahi Poke Wontons, and Ceviche. I didn't try the Fried Calamari but everything else was awesome, especially the Ahi Poke Wontons, which had great sauce on top and the wontons were perfectly crispy. I had the Seafood Louie for my entree which was delicious and super filling. The shrimp and crab were really fresh tasting. It was my manager's birthday that week so the staff kindly brought out complimentary ice cream and cake for him, which was super nice. Mildly surprised by Ketch. I came here for a work outing and wasn't quite sure what to expect. The space itself is genuinely beautiful--clean, classy, and paired with really nice ocean/bay views. It feels like it's aiming for an upscale dining experience, and visually, it mostly delivers. That said, the overall vibe feels a bit inconsistent. The crowd--especially during weekday happy hour--was dressed to the nines, like they were coming from events or celebrations. The setting supports that energy. But the staff presentation didn't quite match. The servers came across more casual, with a look and demeanor that felt out of sync with the otherwise polished atmosphere. It created a noticeable contrast that took away from the cohesiveness of the experience. From a branding and ambiance standpoint, it seems like there's an opportunity here--aligning staff presentation and service style more closely with the upscale environment could really elevate the place. On the positive side, the food and drinks were solid. If you're into seafood, this is definitely a great spot. The caviar stood out, and I appreciated that they also offered non-seafood options. Their drink selection is also well-rounded, with a good variety of alcoholic options. There was a wait for outdoor but the doors are open so even inside feels like outside. The margarita was delicious and only $8 on happy hour. Father's Day dinner proved a disappointment. After appetizers and drinks, my wife and I asked to split the swordfish entre and something went terribly awry. The fish was perhaps 3/8 of an inch thick and grilled beyond well done. Someone does not know how to grill fish properly. Why was it so thin a cut and why was it cooked like a piece of carne asada? A poorer piece of fish we've never had. Not wanting to make a "thing" out of this dinner that I was being honored at we elected to just let it go. But upon reflection we should have immediately sent the dish back. Failing this we still think it appropriate to let management know of our poor dining experience. I was so excited to try this place for my birthday, but the experience was bad. We showed up 10 minutes early to our reservation and were seated in an overflow area at the back of the patio. No view of the marina -- instead, a dumpster and a staging table with dirty dishes utensils, and condiments. The reservation was made in-person a week in advance, and the hostess asked if there was a special occasion (my birthday). You'd think that making a res in advance would guarantee a decent table. Prior to placing our order, I asked our waitress if we could move to a table that was being cleared off closer to the marina, and was told no because they had other reservations to attend to. Our waitress was very nice and I understand that it is not up to her to seat parties. During dinner, my dad was asked to stand up from the table so that an employee could wheel a heat lamp through a busy walkway right behind the table. No shade to the employee. Just very odd. The ceviche and calamari were good, but the entrees were not. We learned that ketch of the day is code for yesterday's catch. The fish was not fresh. The shrimp linguini came with a strange sauce that kind of gave college dining hall food. I wish we had gone to Mitch's instead. read more

My wife and I were staying in Point Loma for a night and she mentioned this place would be an awesome place to try out after our flight in. We got a seat right on the water from our fantastic waitress who took care of us really well. I ordered an IPA to start off with, $9 was a little steep for a beer, but okay. It was a solid IPA and I followed it with another of their IPAs. Good stuff. I ordered the short rib sandwich with french fries and green beans. The sandwich was rich and meaty and awesome with a great buttered couple of slices of bread. My wife thought the fries were not crunchy enough, but I thought they were perfectly seasoned. My GFs and I were supposed to go to another restaurant on Shelter Island; however, we weren't aware they closed at 1pm! We were celebrating FRIENDSgiving and Ketch kindly accommodated us without delay. Yay! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. He gave us suggestions, was patient, kind, and took photos of us. We ordered family style and shared corned beef hash which was delicious and the portion was huge! We also got crab cakes, a bit fishy for my taste, but the rest of the group loved them. We also ordered the banana walnut French toast which was super yummy! The Brussel sprouts were so flavorful, this was my 2nd fav! My ultimate fav though was the coconut creme brulee!!! It may have been the best I've ever had; creamy, crunchy top, and the coconut gave it such a nice flavor. We shared the dessert, but honestly, I could have eaten it all by myself! The restaurant is casual, clean, and the view of the water and boats makes this place so perfect! There's plenty of metered parking on the street and in a lot across the way. I've been to Ketch multiple times and I have always generally really enjoyed it. Their food is usually pretty good, the beer is cold and satisfying, and the views are unmatched. What makes my most recent visit a 3/5 star is the service we received. My personal favorite beers that I tried here are the pilsner, IPA, and the rice lager. We made a reservation for a large party a week or two beforehand and got seated pretty quickly after we arrived. We mostly ordered off of the happy hour menu and sampled most of the appetizers listed. Our entire party was pretty satisfied with most of the food items, particularly enjoying the brussels sprouts, buffalo cauliflower, and fresh oysters. The fried pickles were very average or run of the mill, but we all agreed that we would order them again. One item that we did not particularly enjoy was the clam chowder. Our servings of clam chowder were a bit cold when they hit the table and every bowl had a bit of sand or grit. Our server really left an impression on me, and not a positive one at that. I understand that it is tiring to serve a large party and I know what it is like to work a service job, so this experience just screams that she did not care to put in any effort. The whole time it just felt like someone from my party was either missing something (silverware, water glass, a drink that was ordered) even after reminding our server multiple times. Our waitress was often short with us, would disappear for large amounts of time, and just generally slow. Really a shame that we had this experience this time around especially when my previous experiences were different and we all genuinely enjoyed the food, drinks, and vibes. read more

Brought a group of colleagues here after a day of meetings. The blackened swordfish was the winner at the table, followed closely by the seared Ahi and the pistachio crusted salmon. Brussels had to be reordered a few times because they disappeared before everyone had shoveled some on to their plate - so good. Service was efficient but lacked warmth. This is a great spot with a marina view. Love that it's right on the water. It's beautifully decorated inside as well. We had a table on the patio under the veranda. Service was super friendly. Although they seemed a little overworked at times. Food was good. I really enjoyed the buffalo cauliflower. The crabcakes were extremely tiny and the arugula that it came on was over seasoned. I couldn't eat the arugula and the tomatoes. But the crabcakes were good. I just seemed like a lot of money for three tiny crabcakes. Some of my family and I flew in and this was the first bite of San Diego I tried. We had a little yacht event nearby so we decided to find a restaurant close to the water. Saw this place and gave it a try. Very friendly service and staff. Place looked beautiful! Outdoor seating and indoor seating. Right next to the water. Very great ambiance. My uncle got a pork dish, my aunt/ cousin got fish and chips, and I got (being the carnivore I am..) a double cheeseburger . Burger was good. I got a Pilsner with mine which was very refreshing. My aunt loved the fish and chips (and she's picky when it comes to fish). We were all hangry from the travel morning, but this hit the spot. I got sweet potato fries and coleslaw next to mine. I ordered a cauliflower appetizer. It was placed on some shredded, wilted lettuce, which stuck to the cauliflower sauce and wasn't very visually appealing or appetizing. The cauliflower was not hot when it arrived at the table Not sure if it was supposed to be breaded with something or not, but it had a chewy texture. Perhaps undercooked. Our salad was overdressed.
