Location, location, location! This restaurant is located in Shelter Island right on the marina. The outside and indoor seating have amazing views. Husband and I arrived at Ketch for Happy Hour on a Sunday afternoon. We were immediately greeted and seated on the patio overlooking the water. We love coming to Ketch for their amazing Happy Hour and friendly service. On this day we ordered three appetizers (Calamari, Caesar Salad and Onion Rings)off the HH hour menu. My favorite is the calamari with the dipping sauce. We also had a draft beer and a whiskey with soda. Both drinks were only $5 each during HH. The breeze from the ocean felt especially refreshing on this day due to the warm weather. The service was great, no complaints at all. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon for a work outing and they were able to seat all 23 of us at a long table which was really nice of them. Ordered the short rib melt and tuna melt to share, which both came with two sides. Both of the melts were really good! A little on the small side for a sandwich but both tasted great. The sweet potato fries were also super yummy. Their mai tai here is a bit too sweet for my liking but their guava punch was really good! This review is long overdue! We were heading to a concert across the street and, since parking was a hassle, decided to grab dinner here beforehand and walk over afterwards. I came in without any preconceived expectations, but left with a big smile. The menu was easy to navigate, the staff were attentive, and everything came out fresh and perfectly timed. For how good the experience was, I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this place sooner. I'll definitely be back and I already have my eye on several other menu items. Ketch Grill & Taps is a branch of the Brigantine restaurant empire. This Point Loma location was located diagonally across from a flagship Brigantine on Shelter Island Dr. They have a nice vantage point right on the south shore of the America's Cup Harbor. The nighttime lighting was a bit dim around the building, but the inside had a modern wood look that resembled a giant open cabin with a back deck overlooking the water. Metered parallel parking was available, however the hours of enforcement ended after 5 or 6 pm. In addition to the all-day menu, a supper menu was available in the evening at the time of my visit and featured a variety of heartier main dishes. I chose the Seafood Paella Fritters as an appetizer that came as five fried stuffed rice balls with lobster, crab, shrimp, and peas along with a saffron and red pepper aioli dip. It was like a seafood version of arancini that was fried perfectly. For an entrée, I selected the Root Beer Braised Beef Short Rib in which the meat was marinated with craft root beer and accompanied with a sweet potato purée, onion confit, fried brussels leaves and hand-cut fries. What I liked best was that the beef came as tender slices and not shredded as I commonly see with a short rib entrée. The service was prompt, and the food came out quickly from the kitchen. My dining experience at Ketch Grill & Taps was worth a four star rating. read more

I was actually here twice in one weekend, the salt and pepper shrimp. Wow do not sleep on this. We tried it at happy hour and then I came back the next day with a friend for lunch and got it again. Came here around 2 pm on a Saturday with a party of 10. It was pretty busy and it took a bit for the server to get to us. We got 2 calamari apps for the table, they were pretty good. Didn't have any share plates so we were all kinda just picking at them lol. I shared the macadamia crusted mahi and the octopus with my mom. Both were good but I think the mahi was the best! However, our table was awkwardly placed by a busy outdoor walkway, and my chair was bumped several times by people passing by. Before sitting down, I asked the host if we could move to one of the many available tables with a bay view. She declined immediately without checking for options. I would have preferred to wait until my scheduled reservation time if it meant securing a better table. While the food was good--we enjoyed the blackened swordfish and the IPA fish and chips, the lack of music and the poor seating arrangement made for an underwhelming atmosphere. Follow-up visit was absolutely still five stars. I wouldn't get the fish and chips again though. The batter lacked flavor and just came apart from the fish. We had a late dinner at KETCH at Shelter Island last night, and overall, our experience was pretty great. The hostess was amazing! I didn't catch her name, but she was so friendly and welcoming. We were seated right by the water, which made the experience even better. We ordered the calamari and a salad, and both were absolutely delicious. Our waitress was friendly, but unfortunately, our service was just okay. She never came back to check on us, refill my water, or ask if we needed anything else. This may have been because it was late and they were getting ready to close. Despite that, we had a great time and I would definitely go back. Next time, I would probably go a couple of hours before closing, so that service is not rushed. read more

As far as drinks go, the Spicy Pineapple Margaritas were sweet, a little bit spicy and got the job done. I also had a Raspberry Mojito, which was a little too carbonated for me, but still good. The table shared Fried Calamari, Sweet & Spicy Brussels, Freshly Shucked Oysters, Ahi Poke Wontons, and Ceviche. I didn't try the Fried Calamari but everything else was awesome, especially the Ahi Poke Wontons, which had great sauce on top and the wontons were perfectly crispy. I had the Seafood Louie for my entree which was delicious and super filling. The shrimp and crab were really fresh tasting. It was my manager's birthday that week so the staff kindly brought out complimentary ice cream and cake for him, which was super nice. Sat at the Bar and told the Bartender that we were Celebrating our Wedding Anniversary , so the husband and I ordered 2 drinks at the bar and the Salted Pretzel which comes with cheese sauce . The sauce was so watery, it gave the appearance that they ran out of sauce and thinned out the sauce to create volume.... But the Pretzel was good. Then we shared the crusted Pork loin. It was delivered to us split, how kind. However the underside of the wife's portion was not only tough, but so burnt, the crusted part had to be scraped off in order to eat it ( see photo). The bartender ONLY checked back when I scraped the last bite of burnt off. She says, " how is it?" I pointed to the pile of burnt crust I accumulated. Her response was " you should have said something ". "I would have had I saw you " was the thought in my head. I should have returned it, but how do you return 1/2 of a meal? We requested some heaters and they were able to give us 2 standing ones and turned on the ones above our heads which was wonderful. I freaked out for a minute there when they sat us outside, but this helped a lot. For apps, I tried the buffalo cauliflower and ceviche, both which were delicious. As a main course, I tried the ketch of the day salad, which was also good. My only complaint was that the fish was overcooked and kind of dry. For the high prices they have, I would've expected better. Though, I did appreciate that they had lots of options for the catch of the day. I picked mahi mahi. Overall, it was mostly a good experience. I just wish my fish wasn't so dry. The view from outside was nice though, and the service was great. read more

It created a noticeable contrast that took away from the cohesiveness of the experience. From a branding and ambiance standpoint, it seems like there's an opportunity here--aligning staff presentation and service style more closely with the upscale environment could really elevate the place. My wife and I were staying in Point Loma for a night and she mentioned this place would be an awesome place to try out after our flight in. We got a seat right on the water from our fantastic waitress who took care of us really well. I ordered an IPA to start off with, $9 was a little steep for a beer, but okay. It was a solid IPA and I followed it with another of their IPAs. Good stuff. I ordered the short rib sandwich with french fries and green beans. The sandwich was rich and meaty and awesome with a great buttered couple of slices of bread. My wife thought the fries were not crunchy enough, but I thought they were perfectly seasoned. I came here since I was staying at the Sea Harbor Hotel nearby. Glad I did! This place was awesome. I got a seat at the bar right away. There was a wait for outdoor but the doors are open so even inside feels like outside. The margarita was delicious and only $8 on happy hour. My GFs and I were supposed to go to another restaurant on Shelter Island; however, we weren't aware they closed at 1pm! We were celebrating FRIENDSgiving and Ketch kindly accommodated us without delay. Yay! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. He gave us suggestions, was patient, kind, and took photos of us. We ordered family style and shared corned beef hash which was delicious and the portion was huge! We also got crab cakes, a bit fishy for my taste, but the rest of the group loved them. We also ordered the banana walnut French toast which was super yummy! The Brussel sprouts were so flavorful, this was my 2nd fav! My ultimate fav though was the coconut creme brulee!!! It may have been the best I've ever had; creamy, crunchy top, and the coconut gave it such a nice flavor. We shared the dessert, but honestly, I could have eaten it all by myself! The restaurant is casual, clean, and the view of the water and boats makes this place so perfect! There's plenty of metered parking on the street and in a lot across the way. I've been to Ketch multiple times and I have always generally really enjoyed it. Their food is usually pretty good, the beer is cold and satisfying, and the views are unmatched. What makes my most recent visit a 3/5 star is the service we received. My personal favorite beers that I tried here are the pilsner, IPA, and the rice lager. We made a reservation for a large party a week or two beforehand and got seated pretty quickly after we arrived. We mostly ordered off of the happy hour menu and sampled most of the appetizers listed. Our entire party was pretty satisfied with most of the food items, particularly enjoying the brussels sprouts, buffalo cauliflower, and fresh oysters. The fried pickles were very average or run of the mill, but we all agreed that we would order them again. One item that we did not particularly enjoy was the clam chowder. Our servings of clam chowder were a bit cold when they hit the table and every bowl had a bit of sand or grit. Our server really left an impression on me, and not a positive one at that. I understand that it is tiring to serve a large party and I know what it is like to work a service job, so this experience just screams that she did not care to put in any effort. The whole time it just felt like someone from my party was either missing something (silverware, water glass, a drink that was ordered) even after reminding our server multiple times. Our waitress was often short with us, would disappear for large amounts of time, and just generally slow. Really a shame that we had this experience this time around especially when my previous experiences were different and we all genuinely enjoyed the food, drinks, and vibes. read more

Recently had lunch here with my brother. I used to frequent the downtown location before it closed. The location was perfect, right on the water. Plenty of parking, though you had to pay. I couldn't eat the arugula and the tomatoes. But the crabcakes were good. I just seemed like a lot of money for three tiny crabcakes.
