Topsail has great ocean views, 90's r&b/hip hop playing softly in the background, a table fireplace, lounge furniture and did I mention the views? I ordered the Hugo Spritz and it was incredibly refreshing. Since there was some cloud coverage, I opted for a warm and comfort dish: the lobster mac and cheese. Let me just begin by telling you that I am still thinking about that dish. It was the perfect balance of cheese and generous lobster pieces. My husband ordered the lobster and crab sliders, while my son had the chicken tenders and fries. The food service was pretty quick, though the drinks took a bit longer. The wait time to get seated was about 5 minutes (pretty great for being a Saturday afternoon on holiday weekend). The downside is the parking, its limited. The first thing of note are the views ! They are amazing. This place gives rooftop lounge vibes with mostly couches and tables and a few table top seating options. They also have a full bar in the middle of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the food was good. We ordered wings, oysters which come with this amazing strawberry type vinaigrette, and the lobster and crab sliders. I will say the sliders do need some type of aioli or sauce but other than that the flavor was good. We went during the week on a Monday around 330pm and it wasn't crowded at all but based on location and scene it probably gets crowded on the weekends and at night. read more

Food This place has fair portioned meals and appetizers, perfect for when you want a bite of food but not something super large. I ended up getting their wings with this special sauce. I was cautioned that many don't enjoy the sauce so I got it on the side. It ended up being pleasant! 4/5 Service Our server was amazing. J unfortunately don't remember her name but she asked us what type of vibe we were looking for and recommends drinks to match it. I got this frozen drink that perfectly offset the hot weather and had me slightly turnt. 5/5 for knowing how to connect with patrons! Ambiance Again, the waterfront views are second to none, and since this restaurant is on the second floor, we got to experience the San Diego bay from a better vantage point! Just recently, I went to Topsail to celebrate a good friend's birthday. We had reservations and were promptly seated, however, there were plenty of tables available, even on a Saturday night. That isn't to say it wasn't busy--there was a very vibrant atmosphere and this, coupled with the beautiful views of the San Diego skyline and ocean, made the ambiance fantastic. We were seated in an area of the deck with low chairs and an even lower table. Honestly? I wasn't a fan of this because it was uncomfortable to lean over while we ate in our dresses, but I suppose it did allow for a semi-intimate experience for our small group. But the main issue I had was that there were no overhead heaters in our area! And being on a rooftop deck next to the ocean, there was a serious chill factor to consider. We were very cold. Moving on to the food: it was just okay for me. I ordered the apple, pear, and brie flatbread. It was topped with arugula, candied pecans, balsamic dressing, and caramelized apples and pears, which I quite enjoyed. There was also pork belly, which was too fatty for my taste (though I understand that's the appeal of it, I just wish there were other meat options). Although I enjoyed the overall flavor profile, it was unfortunate that the flatbread was somewhat overcooked/burnt. It was very texturally hard and biting into it was like biting into a charred cracker. Still, I think the flatbread was the best bang for your buck among the other menu options. The waitress surprised my friend with a mud cake, which was very kind! The ice cream tasted like it had a hint of coffee, which was so delicious! Probably the best thing I ate all night. Also, the parking is horrendous. Of course, this is in Downtown SD, so that's to be expected. They do have valet parking, but the fee is hefty; I believe it's $40 for 3 hours, but you can get it validated at the restaurant so it's reduced to $20. I think that, if I were to return to Topsail, it would be for the ambiance--you're next to the Star of India, how cool! read more

There are both covered and uncovered areas, fire pits, and a good spot to hang out near the bar. That said, the food is just mediocre, and the service is absolutely terrible. We came for the Parade of Lights last night and, despite it being surprisingly slow, service was still an issue. There were three employees behind the bar, yet I had to flag someone down just to get silverware. The drinks are also way overpriced. Paying $24 for a 9-ounce pour feels excessive. Closing out took far longer than it should have, and they put all three of our checks on one tab without asking how we wanted it split. The vibe itself is pretty chill, but there are so many other places with great views, better food, more reasonable prices, and far better service. read more

A Coastal Gem Topsail truly delivers an exceptional dining experience! From the moment we were seated, we were absolutely captivated by the scenic ocean view. The ambiance was further elevated by the heaters and fire tables, making for a cozy and inviting atmosphere even as the evening cooled. However, I do wish they extended the heaters closer to the oceanside seating. It did get a bit cold towards the water so we asked our server if we could be seated closer to the heaters in which they accommodated. The food was absolutely delicious! I ordered the blackened salmon cobb salad but since I'm not a big fan of salmon I asked if it could be substituted for ahi and once again they accommodated. My salad was absolutely delicious! My wife order the fish and chips and it was one of the best I've tasted in a while. The tarter sauce that was served with it was the best tarter sauce I've ever tried. The service was outstanding! Our server Alexa was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect evening even with the few requests that we had. Booked lunch here for after my daughter's graduation and we were the only diners which made for a relaxing experience. We sat on the closest seats to the water and the views were spectacular. The service was perfect. Our waitress was friendly and had impeccable timing. She knew exactly when to come by our table. We ordered their crab cake, lobster Mac and cheese and top sail burger. There was a lot of crab in the crab cake, but it needed more seasoning. The slaw served with the cake was delicious and paired somewhat well with the cake. The lobster Mac and cheese had some nice pieces of lobster, but the pasta and sauce was bland; it desperately needed salt. The burger was juicy and tasted good, but it was just an average burger. The fries however were yum! Crispy and well seasoned. We paid $167.71 (with tip). If solely based on the food, I would say, no return visit. The views and vibe however saves the day in this case. I love this spot for views and good food. They have traditional restaurant table settings and they also have a section of couches more loungy and cozy seats for dinner. I love coming to the spot with my friends as it's a higher end food with beautiful ocean and sunset views. They don't have a large menu but they do everything on their menu really well. Two of my friends were on a diet so they didn't really order much, but one of my friends and I ordered the skirt steak which came with sweet potato fries. The steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare accompanied by really tasty soft and crispy sweet potato fries. Our server was super attentive and really nice. Given this was a Saturday night and it was really busy you can still hear everyone at your table really clearly. Topsail never disappoints. I will say parking can be a challenge so just prepare for that, there is paid parking right in front but it could be typical to find a spot. read more
