We had gone our second day in a row to the Garden of the Gods, and I hiked all around where the boulders and the rocks were. The first day we walked mostly on a straight paved area because we had a stroller with us and somehow I fell on normal pavement near the parking lot. Was it embarrassing? Yes. Did I also bruise up my whole leg on the first stop of our epic road trip from Texas? Also yes. It was really fun coming right before sunset, because the lighting was absolutely gorgeous. But it was also fun coming at around sunrise because it just felt so beautiful and fresh and the weather was amazing even though it was July. It was really hot during the day. But the early morning got a bit cooler, and I would definitely recommend to come then!

They met me on arrival and showed us the layout. We were given clean 10x30 covered runs with sanitized buckets and feeders, and a wheelbarrow to clean out our trailer. Timothy hay was available for $14/bale (July 2024). There are 4 pens in this group, which is separated from surrounding pens and paddocks. My horses tend to be picky but drank the water at WZ readily. There are two slots for trailer parking with electric but no water or septic hookup. Another hookup is available across the property. There was another patron parked there, and the separation allowed us both maximum privacy and biosecurity. The only negative element is about a mile of washboard gravel road leading into the property, which is not WZ Ranch's fault. The drive and little-used gravel road made a nice safe place for us to walk our dogs. We were coming off a long 20 hour haul, and really appreciated the quiet and beautiful location for a nice long rest before we hit the road again. We will definitely use WZ again!

However, after that weird interaction, everything else was very pleasant. People get back to you right away and answer all your questions. Rocco is very helpful on site. No…read morehorse is beaten at Mark Reyner and I can tell you knowing the owner very well that if anyone tried to beat a horse at that facility - you would no longer be permitted on the property. Some of the horses are very old (in their 30's) and are fully retired. Anyone who knows anything about senior horses knows it is very hard to keep weight on a horse coming to the end of their life. The owner keeps all senior horses until they can longer function without pain. She doesn't send them off to kill lots like a lot of people do. The stables has also given rescue horses a second chance as therapy horses - instead of a trip to a kill buyer. And most of the therapy horses were performance horses in their day that now have a second job as a therapy horse - instead of a trip to a kill buyer. Better than half of the horses at Mark Reyner are privately owned and if they don't get out of their pen and are not ridden or trained - that is the fault of the individual owner. You can go to any boarding facility and see horses that are ignored by their owners. The therapy horses get out of their pen plenty. There is a thriving therapeutic client list and those horses have plenty of work and interaction with people. As far as riding lessons are concerned - any responsible and competent instructor worth their salt will teach slowly and in stages. You don't get to go galloping off on the second lesson and you don't get to do what you want on a lesson horse. When I teach a beginner - I have total control and don't allow a rider's enthusiasm for fun and going fast to override their safety. It takes a long time to learn to properly ride a horse.

If you are looking for a truly unique trail riding experience, you should absolutely visit Platte…read moreRanch!! As an experienced rider, I was looking for a trail ride that would not be the stereotypical nose-to-tail walking trail ride that is so commonly offered, and this trail ride did not disappoint! We were able to ride in a pack, side-by-side each other. We rode from the ranch, out through a pasture, and up a hillside to the top of the butte. On the butte, they let us experienced riders do more than walk on our horses. Amy, Josh, and Josh were so warm and welcoming and shared some history about the area. Fantastic tour guides, and amazing humans. My friend and I were visiting Colorado for about a week, and Amy gave us some recommendations of additional things to do/see while we were in the area, as well. Next time I make it back to Colorado, I would absolutely go back and visit Platte Ranch again. Cannot recommend this place enough for those looking for a truly awesome riding experience in the mountains!!
