There are two entrances to Kilwins; the more popular one is along Alamo Plaza and the other is on Losoya Street. This shop sells fudge, truffles, candied apples, and - what I came for - ice cream! They had a lot of ice cream flavors to choose from, a least a couple dozen. The smiling young woman working behind the ice cream counter offered to give tastes, but I had already figured out which flavors I wanted. I chose two scoops in a cup, one of Cappucino Chip and the other Turtle Cheesecake. They have several tables to sit at, some along a hallway and more in a back room. I took a seat and was in awe of the huge scoops given. The Cappuccino Chip had a mild flavor (I prefer it stronger) but a fair number of tiny chocolate chips. The Turtle Cheesecake had an excellent cheesecake flavor with swirls of caramel, praline pecans, and caramel-filled mini turtles. I'm usually not fond of nuts in my ice cream but I actually enjoyed the pralines. In my humble opinion, there were too few turtles. But I still loved it. If you're in the mood for a cold, creamy treat while visiting the Alamo, you'll find this to be the perfect place to visit. read more

I'm a huge chocolate lover so knew I needed to pop in. First time here, but I've had the chocolate mints gifted to me and they were delicious. I was responsible and only ordered two things-- the dark chocolate sea salt twist and dark tonga shortbread. Customer service was superb from Jonathan. He was friendly, personable, and does his job well. I was excited to try these two treats, but unfortunately, I did not enjoy them. There was a strong cardboard aftertaste and I just couldn't get over it. I was fine with the one bite. Disappointing because I spent $10, but hoping this was a one off. The best sweet shop downtown! I've passed by Kilwins for years with the misunderstanding that it was only an ice cream shop, but I was SO wrong! They have chocolates, candies, chocolate and caramel dipped treats, ice cream, and so much more filling tables and shelves all throughout the shop. The place was super bright and cheerful, not to mention exceptionally clean, and is staffed by the friendliest team members ever. We were greeted as soon as we entered, and while we were perusing through the huge selection of goodies, Larry offered us both delicious fudge and decadent chocolate samples to try. We ended up choosing a couple of dipped Marsh-Mallows, one Caramel and one Sea-Salt. While I was expecting a thinner layer of crispy caramel, I bit into the exact opposite. Both had the thickest layers of what tasted like Werther's caramel, soft and chewy. Despite the thickness, the caramel didn't overwhelm the marshmallows' sugary flavor and instead complemented one another. The light chocolate drizzle on the Caramel Marsh-Mallow was just enough to enhance the simple but delicious caramel flavor. The chocolate coat on the Sea-Salt Marsh-Mallow, however, was easily tasted over the base caramel coat, the sea salt adding a delicious savory flavor to the treat. Every bit of these thick Marsh-Mallows was filled with sugary deliciousness! This place is absolute heaven for sweet tooths! When you visit Kilwins, make sure you try a few samples. We seem to end up here whenever we are near the Alamo. So many sweet things to choose from-it's hard to pick one and leave, so instead make sure to grab a few. Wifely loves Ice cream and usually gets a cone or scoop from the many choices they have. Add a waffle bowl and you will be happy walking around even in 100d temps. You can indulge yourself in the many chocolate covered snacks if you are into that sort of thing. It appears this ice cream shop has been a staple in the area for many years. The decor dates back into the 50's. It's cute. The people working there are friendly and laughing. Huge variety of sweet treats and they allow samples of fudge and their many ice creams. They do homemade waffle cones and bowls which I love. We opted for the Dulce De Leche single scoop on Sugar cone and it set us back $8.65 - for one scoop. Good thing we aren't huge ice cream fans. I'm aware of this franchise because I come from Michigan however my experience was better than anticipated because I was served by Jonathan. We asked for a sample of ice cream and he proceeded to share some flavors of the MI region, why your fudge has a wonder flavor and even elaborated on Kilwins community partners...Jonathan represented the brand with professional passion. I loved that he has a drive to complete his education while continuing to work for the store. If I was the owner, I would send him to headquarters, give him the fudge making experience and set him up for success once he gets his degree. Really good ice cream. Lots of yummy treats and gifts. It's like a local version of Ghirardelli. They give free fudge samples. Ice cream is fresh and has huge chunks of pralines and chocolates. Ambiance just needs better decor as it cheapens the place needlessly. What a shame since the ice cream is spot on. My snooty kids all say they prefer Ghirardelli in terms of perception. Glad that they're going strong since 1947. And glad it's not one of a the hundreds of gelato places. Next time might try Mr ice cream instead. They need to update their Yelp page as it says that they have validated parking, but they don't. read more
