Jason calls it "waging war against disease and weakness" and he means it! His coaching shifted me from chasing aesthetics to building real functional strength and longevity. The physique changes were a nice bonus lol! He's insanely knowledgeable, and a true movement nerd in the best way! He showed me specialized exercises i'd never heard of that woke up muscles I didn't even know I had. Also, nothing feels random. He explains the why, coaches the details, and pushes you hard while keeping things simple. The gym itself is cozy and approachable, but don't let that fool you, the training is elite. And it's wayyy more than kettlebells, so what you learn you can take with you anywhere. I don't even live in the area right now and I still use what Jason taught me every time I exercise! This place is great and Jason is an excellent trainer. He has just the right mix of motivating you and pushing you to do better without being overbearing. I've been training with Jason for 3 years. He makes it easy to schedule within a busy work day. I'm a middle aged mom of 3 with an all day desk job. I had bad neck and back pain and my physical therapist (PT) said I needed to strengthen my core. I made more progress in 4 weeks of training with Jason than I had in 4 months of PT. My pain is gone and Jason is amazing at adjusting movements or giving verbal cues to help accommodate where I'm at. I've lost weight, got more toned, and am much stronger than when I first started. This was my first kettlebell class I've ever taken and I was kind of nervous. I used to do a lot of powerlifting and weight lifting when I was younger. I wasn't a professional or competed on the platform for powerlifting lol I wasn't strong enough ( squat: 385 deadlift: 405and bench measly 315 lol) . I've gotten old, spine surgery 4 years ago, left knee surgery 5 months ago and right knee 20 years ago. Also, I've packed on 30 lbs....of blubber haha. So, I was really nervous to see how out of shape I am. I lift weights 4 days a week but this is a different animal for me, I kettlebell training was gonna kick my butt. I parked in front ( they have parking in their lot), I entered and was greeted by Jason. You know when you have that feeling or aura someone is going to be really cool. That's what I got from him. He was super smiley and was like ," joe right?" ( because for class you sign up online which is helpful). I told him a had a Groupon ( usually people give you some kind of like "cheapskate" look when you have those haha) he didn't he was super happy I got the package. We had some time to talk before class and he asked me what my goals were and I told him I'd like to get back to 180-190 lbs. He was asking about my diet ( what's that I eat everything in sight haha) but I told him I'm intermittent fasting and started dieting this week. He was like yes man we'll get you sub 200. He was like someone I've known for along time but just met. Met 2 really nice ladies in class that were super welcoming. We started with warmups and I think about 30 minutes into class I almost passed out hahahahaha not really I was just breathing really hard. The whole time Jason was smiling and going over everyone's form and giving tips. Like how is this guy so smiley and nice and he's murdering me lmao. After the class was over I was so happy for one I survived and 2 it was just a fun class....I told Jason I can lift weights 7 days a week but this cardio and kettlebells i only enjoy I'm group settings so I'm happy that I joined his place . I can't wait to get back to 185 lbs. I used to do it on my own but it's much more enjoyable when I'm not on a stair master for 45 minutes being bored outta my mind. Well well well...guess who's back?? I first reviewed Kettlebells South Bay in February 2013 and I worked out over the summer and because I was crazy I stopped. Yeah I don't remember and it doesn't matter because I'm BACK and the love I had for the workouts here are STILL there (and I can't say that about the boyfriend I had then)...ok seriously!! During my talk with him during the kettlebell pickup I decided to pick his brain concerning "Hard Style" KB exercises. I could tell that Joe had a comprehensive knowledge of all KB movements and I knew I have to attend his classes to learn proper technique that most of KB material lacks. I've been training at Kettlebells South Bay for over a year and a half and I'm in the best shape I've been in since high school football! Quite the statement since I'm in my 50's. This is by far the best full body workout you will find, the environment is great and the key for me is the variation. In a year and a half we have never done the same routine twice, pretty impressive since I average 4 sessions a week! Great place for a workout. Not your usual dumbbells and barbells. This place is about battle ropes, sandbags, and of coarse kettlebells. Joe is a great/patient instructor and knows the kettlebell inside and out. Classes are small so everyone gets individual attention. Myself in particular needed help recovering from shoulder surgery, and I feel Kettlebell Southbay helped speed up the strength portion of my rehab. I started training here about 2 months ago, unfortunately due to to a new job that is constantly changing shifts. I can not keep up training for about another 2 weeks. But rest assured I will be back the minute I can. This guy is awesome, took classes for about 2.5 months, and got great workouts and had a lot of fun. The best part for me was that Joe would take his time and make sure that all the lifts were being executed properly. When I had questions, he was able to answer them technically, and that made a HUGE difference when I started lifting kettlebells outside of the classroom. Classes were always varied: sometimes he would work on perfecting technique, sometimes we'd do circuit-style workouts, and when appropriate he would introduce new lifts to grow our repertoire. If you're a beginner (I had never lifted before attending), Joe will keep you safe while still pushing you to learn, and will help you to progress when he sees that you're ready. He's the kind of guy who doesn't hold back on teaching, and will try to give you all the secrets he's picked up in his training to help you to train more efficiently. After the first couple months, I was loaded with tons of good ideas in order to put together my own workouts using several kettlebell lifts and body weight exercises. New to the world of weightlifting, Jason helped to not only encourage me but to also help me along with the process. Most of what he helped me with were some of the starting strength lifts revolving around the barbell. These lifts include the benchpress, overhead shoulder press, squats, and deadlifts. He also taught me a few new things such as the kettlebell Turkish Getup and better ways to do pull-ups. Starting out I wasn't quite sure if my form was the best, but after a few sessions with Jason I'm quite a bit more confident in my lifts. I ask him what he has been doing, and he said he uses kettlebells to train with. Jason (RKC Certified) is now the owner, and he offers a flexible class schedule. I have taken a class Monday through Saturday, each class is completely different so you never get bored. Jason will make sure you are actually pushing yourself to reach your personal best, if he sees that you can use a heavier bell he will encourage you to do so. I had been working out with kettlebells for awhile on dvd but didn't feel like I was getting enough form and techinique instruction. I learned about Kettlebells South Bay at a fitness expo so I decided to check them out. Joe did not disappoint. I was concerned that I was going to walk into a macho gym and be totally intimindated. Instead I was greeted by Joe with a friendly smile. He addressed all my questions and concerns. We spent most of my first class just building up to a two handed swing. That might not sound like a lot but I think by building a strong foundation based on good form has helped me pick up advanced moves more quickly. Not to mention keep me safe. We also train with sandbags and ropes so you never quite know what to expect when you walk in each day. Also, everyone I have met at Kettlebells South Bay is extremely friendly. i signed up not knowing much about this regimen but let me tell you, it's been great. the work out is fantastic!, works out all parts of your body and joe is an outstanding trainer particularly in a method where form is critically important. i've been doing for a few months and i can really tell a difference in my core strength. i also like the facility. basic, with nothing to distract you. Southbay Kettlebell is a GREAT place to learn HOW to correctly use a kettlebell AND get the maximum benefit from the unique exercise it provides to the body. Kettlebells are unconventional as an exercise and I have found they work the body like nothing I have ever experienced. And, I am a genuine(over 25 years) fitness enthusiast, who has most likely done what ever thing you are thinking about to get in shape or take your fitness to the next level. I am a ultra runner (over 25 years), triathlete, and yoga girl, so I am in shape. Kettlebells Southbay is the only place where my pesky (middle age?) inner arm and inner thigh disappeared, within 6 weeks, going only 3 days a week. Joe, the owner and primary instructor is very precise at teaching the proper use and technique of Kettlebells. I appreciate the fact that he is no nonsense and not a "hand holder" type of trainer. The interesting thing I noted about the workouts is they may or may not make you sweat or "feel" like you have worked out, but the proof is in the significant strength, stamina, and physical body changes that occur in a short period of time, if you stay with the program. And, IMHO - less is more. Day on day off the best way to go, so the body can recover. Joe also does Ropes, which are so much fun, and sandbags, TRX, etc...
