I've always wanted to try reformer Pilates but never found the time. Imagine my surprise when I saw…read morea sign for Pilates No Ka Oi, right across the street from Schofield Barracks. After retiring from the military, I wasn't really working out anymore and wanted something that would help strengthen my core without being too hard on my joints. I signed up for the beginner package and had three one-hour sessions with Ana. Every review I read (with the exception of Michael M- which I think is a fake review) about her and the studio was absolutely accurate. She's an amazing Pilates instructor and just a genuinely kind person with great energy. You can tell she's passionate about what she does, and she took the time to teach me the proper techniques instead of rushing through the workouts. The pricing is fair, and I really appreciated the smaller, more personal feel of the studio. It's by far a better experience than what you'd find at a national chain Pilates studio. You never feel like just another client. I have been moving so haven't had the chance to go back, but once I'm settled in my new place I will go back consistently. If you've been thinking about trying reformer Pilates, I highly recommend Pilates No Ka Oi!!!

I feel like my joints are less sore and when I get out of bed in the morning my ankles don't make a clicking sound anymore! I can tell that my core is strengthening and my flexibility is improving. Ana is also teaching me body rolling exercises which I really love! I plan to keep working with Ana and will try some of her classes as well as, continue with private sessions. I know I'm on my way to a healthier stronger body! I highly recommend Ana and Pilates No Ka Oi!

I visited Mad Tiger on a weekday gi class and am impressed - Prof Eric and three of his awesome students (2x blue, 1x brown belt) welcomed me with open arms. The instructions from Prof Eric were situationally based that I could easily relate and practice. Rolling followed and you can easily assess the quality of the gym and instructor by the way students roll, especially with an out of town visitor - they practiced restraint and control, instead of cranking down to execute a submission (where injuries can occur) or using unscrupulous (i.e. butthole) techniques, ensuring everyone was able to have a good grappling session. Located in a converted warehouse in a residential area, close to Wheeler Army Airbase (Wahiawa), MTA has the vibe of an old school academy with a great professor and students. I know where I'll be visiting when I travel to Hawaii.

Paid $4 for the class and headed on in. Heidi is our instructor and is super chill. Retired military and many years of fitness experience, triathlete (she's participating in this weekend's triathlon). As a former Spin instructor I can vouch you are in good hands with Heidi. She's got the skills to pay the bills. The room that's used for class is a racquetball court and has fifteen bikes. This is only temporary until classes start back up at the other fitness center, (Family Health and Fitness Center), just across the way from this one. Once over there more classes will be offered, as well as more available bikes, but for now the class is 11:45-12:45 on Wednesdays. Per usual, you'll scan in with your ID, then walk to the other part of the counter to pay for your class. Then head over to the class and sign in. Heidi will help you set up your bike (if you're new or if you don't know what's what). Trust me, for your best ride and safety, it's essential to customize your bike to you. There's a handlebar height, the seat height and the fore and aft of the seat. The bikes are in very good shape, no clunkers here. In the hour class there's a warm-up, the ride, the cool down and then off the bike for more cooldown/stretching. It's a good class, with good energy and good people. If you have access to Schofield and the gym you should definitely go, I hope to see you there! *** I'll update when we move over to the other fitness center.

I have watched "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" exactly eighteen billion times. I have longed to…read morewear a pure leather jumpsuit and run around Paris in stiletto heels, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, raining woe upon all my enemies. I have always wanted to be a badass, but instead I took jazz dance and learned to play the flute, neither of which felt badass. SO. When I am in this gym, and my gf is totally beating me up because she is a master and I am not, I am loving it. And just to clarify, she is beating me up very nicely. Going all slow, trying to not actually hit me even though I keep putting my face on her fist and my ribs on her shin bone. But that is beside the point. This gym is not a large and doesn't need to be. There is more than enough space to punch and kick people, jog in circles and fail at doing those jumpy push-up things. I mean, you probably won't fail, you will probably be just fine like the strapping young men next to me. I'm working on my upper body strength, everyone just shush. And the owner. Coach Haru Shimanishi is the shiz. He is a master. He is a sensei right out of a movie where there's some young buck who is not that good at fighting, but has all kinds of heart and some sad-ass story, and changes his life by waking up at dawn and running on the beach carrying the 50 lbs. jasmine rice from Costco and slapping palm trees, and finally wins a championship fight and also the girl of his dreams and a mansion. Haru is the sensei from those movies. He is a super tall Japanese man with a million stories who has trained countless world, national and local champions in MMA, boxing, muay thai and more. Sometimes I look at the beginning students and think "you have no idea that you are training under a legend." He builds champions. I do not plan to be a champion. I mean, not a martial arts champion. I plan to be a life champion. However, I do like being able to defend myself. I enjoy being in the stairwell walking down to TJ Maxx and feeling like if someone decided to do something sketchy they would encounter... resistance. So much resistance. Even if my glasses fall off, because I don't train with glasses. Obviously. The End.

If you're looking for the perfect mix of recovery, relaxation, and straight-up rejuvenation, Dips and Drips is where it's at! We kicked it off with the ice bath plunge -- and let me tell you, that first dip will shock your soul in the best way. The team coached us through breathwork and mindset, and within minutes, the cold became clarity. Then it was off to the sauna, where the heat hit just right. Between the deep detox sweat, the good vibes, and the ambient beats playing, it felt like we were in a recovery retreat instead of a local wellness spot. Back and forth, hot to cold, body to mind, the whole session felt like hitting reset on life. The crew at Dips and Drips was super welcoming, knowledgeable, and brought a really supportive energy to the whole experience. Whether you're an athlete, weekend warrior, or just need to unplug from the chaos -- this place delivers.
