It's been five weeks since my inguinal hernia "tissue" (no mesh) repair with Dr. Bill Brown and I can't say enough about how great the experience has been to date! (Read no further unless you want more detail). I had been putting off taking care of my hernia for two and half years due to one excuse or another. Mostly I was hesitant about the idea of mesh but couldn't find a surgeon in LA who would do a tissue repair for me. So, I finally decided to take the plunge and was set for an operation with mesh in LA. A week before, a good friend (who is a doctor) told me not to do mesh under any circumstances. Uh-oh. I put on the brakes and hopped back on the internet to search for a surgeon who does "tissue repair." Still couldn't find anyone in LA though. After some clicking around I found Dr. Brown in Fremont, CA. He checked out and I scheduled an operation after a couple of phone calls with Dr. Brown. Yes he actually talks to his patients. Anyway, my wife, my dog Emma and I drove up to Fremont via the very smoky 5 FWY on Tuesday for an end of day consultation with Dr. Bill Brown. What a gem of a guy! He's a very lively, focused, mature man who is everything a doctor should be - smart, interested, compassionate and evidently not afraid to buck the industry dogma. He's also kind of out of central casting for a throwback doctor complete with a starched white shirt and bow tie. Anyway, the consultation was unlike the three other appointments I had had on this hernia in that he didn't just confirm I had a hernia, ask me for questions and kick me out. Rather, we had an actual conversation. He examined me much more thoroughly than anyone else. He also probed a lot to get a feeling for me and my case. He even asked how I thought I had gotten the thing (which none of the other docs did). Finally, he drew me a diagram of what he was going to do. The next morning, my wife took me to the surgery center for the pre-op at 7AM. Not only were the nursing and tech staff very nice, many of them sang the praises of Doctor Brown (and they didn't have to), noting that people come from around the country to have him operate on them. Pre-op ended with Dr. Wang, the anesthesiologist, telling me a couple of corny jokes after which he knocked me out. Two hours later I woke up in the recovery room, in a slightly groggy state which I was able to fight through in a few minutes. Dr. Brown then came to chat a bit. He told me my hernia had been bigger than he had thought and then gave me some pix of the operation. (His sewing is very precise). My wife picked me up and drove me back to the motel to rest a couple of days. Pain came about 12 hours later after the local suddenly wore off, but it really wasn't that bad. Maybe a 5 out of 10 and I had expected worse. Took some tramadol and Advil every few hours. I was off the tramadol within 36 hours and I felt scarily good within about four days. Now, five weeks later, I'm moving great. No pain. Lifting fifty pounds. And best of all, there's no sensation of a foreign body inside me. The one interesting, and unfortunate thing about the whole situation is that I think Dr. Brown is practicing a dying art and most docs aren't getting this training. The world does mesh. Dr. Brown is one of a kind! I had a core injury that was not diagnosed for nine years. I could not walk or stand without pain in my lower left core muscle. I tried P.T. Several times, saw a over a dozen doctors, had multiple M.R.I's with no luck. I finally was told that there was an expert in Philadelphia. ( I live in California) I then was told by a surgeon who performed hip surgery for F.A.I on me (the thought was this was my cause of pain) that Dr. brown was an excellent surgeon. My son was diagnosed with tears in both obliques and both adductors suffered from competitive soccer competition. My son had been suffering from this condition for some time, undiagnosed. A doctor with a well-known Southern California medical center wanted my son to wait for a couple of months to see if the situation would correct itself and, if not, undergo mesh surgery. After extensive internet research I determined this was not the right approach and stumbled onto Dr. Brown's website. Dr. Brown able to help us analyze the situation and our alternatives. One year ago I developed pain in both my adductors. No amount of rest or physical therapy would improve the pain. After several conservative treatments, I decided to have surgery. I narrowed it down to the two main surgeons in the US: Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia and Dr. Brown. Dr Meyers does not take insurance and I live in CA which would have made follow ups difficult. I chose Dr Brown and I have no regrets. I scheduled the consultation. Three weeks later, Dr Brown diagnosed me based on my history and an examination in 30 min. He answered all my questions and recommended an adductor release on both legs. The surgery was performed the next day. Everything went well. Dr Brown is a great surgeon and I was very impressed with his bed side manners. He provided me with his cell phone number after the surgery and checked on my progress everyday. He also worked with my PT to tailor my recovery program. This was very important to me as I think that the PT is critical to a proper recovery. I searched the entire west coast looking for a surgeon who does hernia repairs without mesh and am so glad I found Dr. Brown! From the day I first contacted their office their service was above and beyond my expectations. The office staff was very professional and clearly answered all my questions. When I did arrive for my consultation with Dr. Brown, he was right on time and explained things clearly to me. My surgery was scheduled for the next day, and the staff from the surgery center had been in contact with me several days before. I am posting for my dad. These are his words: Dr. William Brown did an absolutely outstanding non-mesh operation on my hernia. I had waited for two years, and tried many of the non-surgical solutions available such as a truss, etc. I wish I had found Dr. Brown two years ago. To say that meeting Dr. Brown changed my life is not an exaggeration. Staying active is incredibly important to me. After developing a Sports Hernia injury in the Spring of 2019 I bounced around doctors at Kaiser (awful experience) until January of 2020. I am from Canada and was very frustrated by the lack of knowledge about Sports Hernias in my home Province and the numerous doctors visits I had undertaken without any proper diagnosis . I talked to 5 surgeons before I picked Dr Brown. He was the only local surgeon I had found that does many mesh-free hernia repairs per year. Others were willing to do a mesh-free repair, but do not do them regularly. I had no interest in that. In addition, Dr Brown was extremely accessible and easy to ask questions of, and extremely thorough in all of our interactions. That raised my confidence in him a lot. This carried through in all our interactions, before during and after surgery. His after care follow up has been great. The incision is really neat and shows his attention to detail. My healing has been quite easy (1 week so far), with very reasonable discomfort. My grandfather was a surgeon, and Dr Brown reminds me of his complete focus on patient care. Can't say enough. My repair was for a combined indirect and direct hernia, indirect was obvious before surgery, direct could be seen during. It's quite impressive to meet a doctor for the first time and feel comfortable with him operating on me the next day. I'd suffered from two sports hernia's. The first was cared for by Dr. Myers (Philadelphia) back in 2011. The second wasn't as serious so I didn't address it. Finally in 2017 it started to bother me and my ortho suggested Dr. Brown. He and his staff were wonderful! He ended up repairing three tear's in my left oblique and removing over 16-inches of damaged nerves from the first sports hernia surgery in 2011. Even though I woke up to two five-inch incisions, he did a fantastic job of managing my pain. He had me in some sort of support device that I wore the first 24-hours as my abs were super sensitive. Dr. Brown was a lifesaver- literally giving me back my active lifestyle after completely losing it for a year and going to doctor after doctor who didn't know what the problem was and even having what was likely an unnecessary hip surgery. I was referred to Dr. Brown by my knowledgeable physician, Dr. Ty Affleck in Santa Rosa. I was having diffuse pain in the region of my right and left groin that hurt when engaging my core, when I would go to rapidly change direction on the tennis court, and during certain other recreational activities..... First, I am so glad that my physician was aware of this condition which is so often misdiagnosed. Dr. Brown changed my life. After two years of a painful undiagnosed hernia was finally repaired with mesh, I continued to have pain in my groin and abdomen for two more years. My life was miserable and full of pain, depression, with no help from all sorts of Dr.'s. I finally called Dr. Brown and he took my call on his vacation! He was kind considerate, and pro. After a year of correspondence and getting nowhere in my home city, I decided to fly out and seek and consult, and consequently have my mesh removed, and the hernia repaired with sutures. I rarely write reviews, but when someone is truly extraordinary, I'll make the effort. I had the best doctor visit in my life. I'm 51 so I've had my share of doctor visits. I called this morning and the receptionist was friendly and squeezed the same day. I was seen within a minute or two after I filled out the paperwork. Dr. Brown was humble, pleasant, thorough and knowledgeable. The first two adjectives are typically not used to describe surgeons. He narrowed down my injury (sports hernia) to one of two possibilities (inguinal ligament or external oblique). One can sometimes be repaired with one or two steroid injections while the other one usually requires surgery. I had a steroid shot today and will keep my fingers crossed that this is all I need. If surgery is required at least I know I'll be in good hands. read more

Dr. Brown is one of the most caring doctors that I have ever been to. He repaired by hernia (without a mesh) back in January, 2020 after I decided to go outside of Kaiser due to their high co-pay and Kaisers insistence on using mesh. The whole process from first consultation to recovery was more than I expected. Also his staff is very professional and accommodating as well. After the surgery, which was very successful, Dr. Brown called me twice a day for the first few days to check up on me while I recovered at home. Who does that now and days? He is a true caring professional doctor with a practice and personality that reminds me of how doctors used to be when I was a child. I wish there were more doctors like him today.
