There have been drainage issues in both the front and back yards, and Michael and Bernie were very thoughtful about their proposed solutions. All of the hardscape is done, and the trees are planted. After the bluebonnets have finished blooming, we can do the rest of the project. Michael has introduced me to plants I hadn't thought of using before and I'm very excited for the next steps. The crew of workers is also great. They make sure the dogs have time to go in the back yard, and they make sure the gates are closed. Having listen to Sheryl McLaughlin's garden show on KLBJ for years, we knew when we bought a house, we wanted her company to do the job. We were interested in a mature tree, so Michael from Kevin Wood Landscapes, suggested a Monterey Oak for our backyard. Michael took his time finding the right tree, and Julia communicated updates. Chris and his crew drove up with the most beautiful specimen. It took about an hour to plant the 65 gal tree and extend a drip irrigation line to the new tree from our sprinkler system. There was no dirt left over anywhere. They were reliable, professional, and took pride in their work. I just finished working with Kevin Wood Landscapes on a new house that included a pool with a concrete deck, all around landscaping and grass, raised vegetable garden beds, and a fruit orchard and I had the most pleasant experience ever! I was originally impressed by their online portfolio and was not disappointed! From the beginning, I felt like I got their full attention in the planning, budgeting, and especially the construction process. I was fully aware the entire time of the schedule, costs, and any upgrades I requested was fully documented. Everyone I worked with (Ben, Manny, Aaron, Taymn, and Andrea) was super friendly and always available if I had any questions. They would responded back to me in a timely manner so I was never left in the dark. I never felt pressured to do any unnecessary upgrades or additions. They always recommended what they thought was best and left it for me to decide. They worked well with my builder to finish everything on time and respected the neighbors around me (my neighbor even asked for their info after seeing the great job they did my property). My designer also remarked that they look like they actually enjoy doing their work and that is a great trait to have in a contractor! One thing I really enjoyed about KWL was the amount of details (large and small) they put into everything. I trusted their judgment throughout the process and was always pleasantly surprised when they showed me new and innovative decisions they made! After the project's completion, Ben and Manny came out several times to check on the property to make sure everything was thriving and to educate me on how to operate the systems they put in place. I hired Kevin Wood Landscapes to install a French drain to avoid my back patio being flooded frequently. Their first attempt failed miserably. The second attempt was just as bad. I refused a third try as it would put another dig in my yard. I would not recommend this company. read more

I wanted to share my disappointing experience with Kevin Woods Landscaping. After 8 months of waiting for my project to be finished, I'm ready to finalize my review of them. After a great start with the landscape design, we waited three months for the project to finally start. I'm patient and understand that if someone is busy, then it may be because they are top notch. The initial project included a large amount of stone work and hardscaping and that was completed quickly, once it started, and was really well done. Some of the other work was a new lawn area and plant beds and they were also prepared well. Then we paid the final amount but were told we should wait a few weeks for the right plants to come in, since it was still winter. BIG MISTAKE! After they left, we discovered sprinkler issues, damaged landscape lighting, improper drainage on the patio where stonework had been added (they actually mentioned this but we had to take care of it). OK, par for the course with landscapers, and I took care of most of this. But two months later and it was spring and we still hadn't received the remainder of the plants (about 75% of them). I called, and called, and called, and about a month later two guys with a pickup filled with a mixture of plants came out and explained that they were going to do the initial planting with what they had available and then come back and fill in and have Kevin approve it, etc., etc... A month later, and no one has returned, one bed is completely empty, a section of lawn is still bare dirt because they ran out of grass (in January!), and the planted areas are OK, but not stellar. After $25,000 in landscaping costs, I really expected to be WOW'd and I'm instead frustrated, feel ignored and ready to plant the rest myself. I picked them based on some example yards I saw and the very nice sales guy who really knew what he was talking about, but what I got was a nice design and promise, a great stone mason sub-contractor and some average quality plant design. It sucks that Austin is growing so much that mediocre businesses can still do well, but beware of this one and paying a premium for such poor customer treatment. read more

I filled out an online request form to schedule an appointment...went unanswered. I called today (a week later) to schedule a consult. Receptionist decided an entire front yard redesign (rip out everything and start over) was too small for Kevin Wood Landscapes. She told me to go to a garden center and pick out some plants. I'm happy I didn't waste more than 5 minutes talking with someone I doubt is qualified to decide over the phone that my job is too tiny. Ran across them at an Austin home improvement show. They seemed to have nice projects and professional so had them come out and plan my project and was quite excited about it. After trying to work with them I found them to be unresponsive even after calling them out on it. I decided to cut my losses after wasting a bit of money and worse a lot of time with these guys. The slow response times were bad but they even screwed up measuring our lot, we had someone call saying they were coming out but they were actually going to a different site,I mean if they can't even read an address correctly do you really want them doing tens of thousands of dollars worth of work on your property? Since they blew pass my proposed budget by double I suspect they are only interested in six figure projects. Unless you are sitting on $500K of equity in your homes and don't mind a big project to offset the capital gains I'd recommend you look elsewhere. Update after comment: Beware! They posted this because it is time to rope in new suckers at the next home show. Do not waste your time, goto Hill country water gardens & nursery instead. read more

Only contact Kevin Wood Landscapes if you do NOT want input on your landscape design. The "landscape architect" came to my house, asked what we wanted, didn't write a word of it down and then for $600 gave us an unattractive design that we did not ask for. I wrote an e-mail and a letter letting him and the owner know that we didn't get one shred of what we asked for and that I wanted my money back, because why would we pay $600 for something we didn't even want? I received no response. I ran into the landscape architect at a store and he said that if I wanted my own ideas in my backyard, then I could have just called a drafter. He said, "It sounds like you wanted what you wanted, instead of what I thought was best." I said, "Of course, it's my yard." I asked if most of his clients had no ideas of their own whatsoever and he said yes. He said his company decides for the customer. For a $42,000 job estimate, I think my backyard design could have incorporated a few of my ideas, too. I can only guess that the cookie cutter design we did get was one that was cut and paste from the last customer's design that he paid $600 for, too. I went to another company, got the design I imagined for no cost (he wrote down what I wanted and turned it into a design) and in two days, rather than the four weeks and a reminder that it took Kevin Wood Landscapes. From this other company, I am getting the yard I asked for at a much, much better price. Keep shopping everybody. Kevin Wood Landscapes is not interested in what you want your yard to look like. I found them arrogant. The designer told me I wouldn't be getting my $600 back, because of the time they spent on it. It didn't matter that it wasn't what I asked for. So, I am writing the review to help you avoid this experience. read more

As many of the current reviews state, this company has VERY poor response times. Although the work is good, the sprinkler heads weren't installed correctly so now we are being fined $225 by the city because of misting, water run off, and the adjustments being off. Clearly the sprinkler heads weren't installed correctly and up to code. The city did give us one warning and we tried to reach Kevin to fix the issue but of course we got no response. So now we are stuck either paying more money to fix the problem or taking legal action. Moral of the story, they do good work but slowly and once they have your money don't expect them to assist you in any form or fashion. read more

You and your team were so courteous and obliging (even during those days when I was not feeling well and a bit snappy...my apologies. You and your guys never said no, were busy as ants going towards a spilt soda. We are not sure which provides the WOW Factor, the view of the lake, the view of the pool with its' babbling water cascade or the awesome view of our landscape and the sound of all the birds it has attracted. Cannot Express our gratitude in words. By the way, we got the fake rock and even the pool guy (and Kevin) walked past it without noticing. We trimmed any stressed sections from the plants and with water and sunshine they are performing as God intended them to do. All blooming and welcoming us outside to enjoy my morning coffee and evening wine. We made an appointment for Sheryl to come and look over our place and provide some suggestions. We live out in the country, in a house that was built inside an oak grove. We have shade, slope, numerous deer and limestone. Sheryl walked around, made suggestions for plants that would work in different areas, ways to manage drainage. My wife had 8 pages of notes by the time our time was up. We have slowly begun to implement some of the ideas and they are all working. This was a great way to get started on landscaping a very large area with a limited budget. Sheryl was great. read more

I've used Kevin for several projects at properties I own. In EVERY case they did the job professionally, on-time and in budget. His knowledge and insight is what separates him from the competition. My first project with him (a commercial building) had drainage issues we were unaware of. Kevin personally inspected and analyzed the site, providing priceless insight to correct the problem. This project could have been a disaster without this consultation, we really dodged a lot of expensive down line costs. We were so impressed that we awarded him the contract and used him to do all the site work on this property. He recently managed the landscape plant selection and implementation at another high profile location on a main downtown street. Their knowledge of plants, proper placement and selection is amazing. We (and all the tenants at this location) love the approach and look of his design. His input on drought tolerance and minimal maintenance was invaluable - exactly what we wanted. The only downside I have encountered is they are really in demand and involved with several huge, innovative projects (one was recently on HGTV). It can be excruciating to get on their schedule and live with the wait - but well worth it. I can't say enough good about Kevin, his honesty and commitment to excellence. read more

Kevin Wood Landscapes finished my landscaping project a week or so ago. In general have been very pleased. The yard looks very nice and have received several compliments on it. There was significant delay in getting project started (plans issued in March but construction not started until late July), obviously would not choose to start a project like this in the worst of the Texas heat. However, once construction was started the employees worked hard 5 days a week even in the heat to finish the project. Ben was available in person or by phone to answer any questions and did so in a prompt fashion. There were a few small issues that came up but given the scope of the project they were minor. So, only real complaint was the delay in actually getting started and I really had to call them frequently to get things going. That is the only real issue I had. I would recommend them. My husband and I decided it was time to turn our dog's backyard into one we could also enjoy! A friend told me about Kevin Wood Landscape because she knew someone who had used his company and she thought that backyard was beautiful. We called, set up an appointment for a consultation and got the process going. The design was so unique, with a dry creek bed for drainage, stone paths around the plantings and new trees, and enough grass to feel the green! When we went to Kevin's office, I was shocked at the number of names on a "consultation board" hanging on the wall. It was late winter when we started our discussions. Well, we weren't the only ones! This company is busy!!! It did take a while to get to our project, but that was due to some weather delays and other people ahead of us. When it was our turn, a crew of several workers came, started ripping out, leveling, and planting. I had never experienced a crew of such friendly, happy workers. Each had a job to do and was so capable of doing it! We were very pleased with the time it took to turn our very dull yard into a wonderland for humans, insects and animals alike.
