I love the old school burger joint vibe at Kewpee. Not sure when this was built, but it is certainly in the Art Deco style of architecture with strong horizontal lines throughout. Some people may find the abundance of Kewpie dolls (note the difference in spelling) a little off-putting, but I thought it was kind of cool. Inside, a couple of peninsula counters jut out into the dining room to make space for lots of counter seating. The burgers are of the smash-em on the griddle variety, which gives a nice crust to each side. Service is friendly, and your fellow diners are likely to be as well. So I would like to begin by stating, I love normally to come to this restaurant and grab a bite to eat every time I come into town to visit my family. However on the last few visits I stopped in to enjoy the great food they offer. I was very very upset in they way the establishment was being kept up, mostly by it's staff members and the cleanliness of the place. Here are a few things just to be point out: - gloves are worn but the lack of them being changed ,and or used ,while doing multiple task such as cleaning, cooking food, and checking your phone all while wearing the same pair , raises and eyebrow - when guest walk in staff members are leaning on the counter, and standing around and talking, while dirty tables are out so a line piles at the door - lack of sanitary conditions are as fallows: - no hair restraints for those not cooking food but are constantly around food - dirty sanitation buckets sit next to food products ready for use - floors not swept or kept clean - lack of hand washing, All in all I just hope on my next visit in the conditions change, because the food is really great. And lastly to leave in a positive note my waitress today Samantha was the only person I felt working or keeping up some type of sanitary conditions as she bussed tables and served food and helped cook. If you want to step back into the '60s, enjoy a great burger from a bygone era; this place is for you. The furnishings are straight out of the '60s. They have a lot of counter space as well as a lot of tables. All the counter stools were occupied when we arrived on a Wednesday at 12:30 PM, so we sat at a table. While we were there, all the tables filled. The service was great. The server was incredibly friendly and her table service was great. The burgers & fries were served in short order. Don't know how they did it so fast since it appeared that all was cooked to order. While they don't accept credit cards, the prices are so low that I can't imagine you wouldn't have enough cash on you to pay the bill. The double cheese burgers we had were great. The fries were also quite good. By-the-way, I bet their breakfasts are also really good. If we lived near this place, I'm sure we'd become regulars. Go on and make a day of it. Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings at the Johnson Wax campus. The administration building is awesome. Kewpee's is rare gem right in the middle of Racine. I don't know how to describe it other than "unique." So many of the place's little nuances make it worth a visit, even if you're not a big burger eater. Dining in and you want a cheeseburger? You'll get it on a plate. Ordering a hamburger? It comes wrapped in paper instead. Why? Who knows. Just enjoy. The burgers aren't huge, so plan on ordering two if you're someone who doesn't fill up easily. The fries are the crinkle-cut kind, if you're wondering. The prices are very cheap. You can get two burgers, fries, and a drink for just a few bucks. Word to the wise: If you're dining in, be prepared to walk out smelling like grease. I've known people who've brought along a spare shirt to get rid of the smell. All part of the charm. read more

It's frustrating to think of all of the burgers I've eaten over the past few years, to think of all of the too-large, too-dry, too overcooked, and - good lord - too underseasoned. Kewpee obliterates many of them, and not in any way you wouldn't expect - it's a very simple burger - but the combination of the baked-in flavor of that flat top and a little salt can go a long way to creating a little bundle of joy. Fries were standard crinkle cut, but I was more impressed with the homemade root beer. Also impressive was their propensity towards free refills on said root beer. And all for under $5. read more

Stopped a Kewpee for one of their great hamburgers and fries. Apparently many others had the same idea, but it still didn't take too much time to get our food. Kewpee in Racine has that authentic old school charm from actually being in an old space and not from hiring an expensive designer to give you that old nostalgic look. The burgers are great, nothing fancy just an honest burger which is so rare these days - blue cheese crumbles anyone. You will need at least two of them if your not on a diet. There is not much to say except that this place has very small goals at which they greatly succeed. Their menu is incredibly limited and they give you exactly what you ask for and more. I've had breakfast here - it was exactly what you would want and the serving size - and price - was very manageable. My wife and I had their cheeseburgers and split an order of fries and they were exactly what one would want from a nostalgic and immaculately appointed and cleaned place like this. And their home made root beer was the perfect accompaniment to this great sample of Americana dining. Kitschy? Absolutely - perfectly so! What can I say probably the best burger for the best value ever. This place is made up of half counter & half table seating & you usually have to wait for either because its just that darn good. The food comes out fresh & fast (usually faster than you can get at most drive thru's) & for a $1.60 you get one of the best burgers PERIOD! Also suggested is there fresh & hot out of the fryer fries. Toping it off is one of there old fashioned malts or home made root beer which is the best not to mention very thirst quenching. So the next time you're in Downtown Racine check out this Gem of a Place I promise you won't be disappointed. Just wished they delivered! If you are in downtown Racine and looking for a burger for lunch, this is the place to go. The burgers are cooked on a well seasoned flattop and done to perfection. The crinkle cut fries were crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. Sitting at the counter reminded me of the diners my grandmother used to take me to when I was young. Very delicious meal with cheap prices. I went to this quirky diner last summer on my trip to Racine and I was happy to return back to it today. It's a quick, cheap place to eat that actually has good food. Between my boyfriend and I we got two fries, two double cheeseburgers, and a root beer and it came out to only $12 (plus tip).
