Kewpees is an excellent stop for fantastic burger and fries. I usually get the Double Cheeseburger and french fries. Occasionally I will get a strawberry shake as well. The burger is cheesy and greasy and absolutely amazing!! Also, the prices are super low! Don't expect much from the servers....Remember you are here for the food, not the service. You will notice 1920's decor with dolls around the walls. It's fascinating to read about the business and how it all started and changed throughout the years! Holy throwback, Batboy! This place is frozen in time, in a good way. It's a bit difficult to find if you are an out of towner, but it's worth the stop. You don't believe me? Yeah, I have 3 words for you - homemade root beer. The fella took me to see the Johnson Wax building for Christmas a few years ago and I did some research, turning up this place as a top choice for lunch. We had to drive around for awhile and had nearly given up when we stumbled upon it. I am so glad we persevered - fan-freaking-tastic burgers, fries, shakes, the aforementioned root beer, all in this really adorable building to boot. Photo op city, big time, this place is filthy with Kewpie dolls and the ephemera of yesteryear. It really feels like you've been transported back in time. Cheap, scary cheap, delicious cheap. Lunch for two, with burgers, fries, a root beer float and a shake was about $12.00. Lots of regulars, which is no surprise, as the food is so damn good. As Julia W. noted, they grind the meat every day - this is the freshest, tastiest meat I've ever encountered. Just enough seasoning in the meat, great toppings, fresh buns and cooked to order...I'm salivating just thinking about it. The fries were crisp, the float and shakes hand made and decadent. I've eaten in many cities and I've never had a burger better than Kewpees. There's not much to them and that's the best part. Other, fancier, more expensive places add lots of fancy, delicious toppings and make a great tasting sandwich. Kewpees serves a great tasting BURGER. The taste of the meat is unmatched by any I've ever had. I usually order a double cheeseburger but I'm a big eater and the burger alone isn't enough. Get 2 or an order of fries if you really came to eat. Whether your on a drive through Wisconsin or a beer tour like I was, make sure a stop through Racine is on your to do list. Where the prices seem to reflect on decades passed so does the glass cabinet full of vintage dolls from the yesteryear's. I think they look odd and add a freakish statement to the joint. Burgers, fries and some drinks priced under two dollars! You read this correctly. Myself and broil enjoyed simple cheeseburgers, fries with cheese, a soda and a chocolate shake. All of this food for $10.51. Their burgers are simple, a typical size burger like what you could expect from an average sandwich at Culver's. Cheese fries is not on their menu, I asked for it and they accommodated by adding cheese from the burger onto the fries. Note: the interesting coloring on the cheese which could look like seasoning, grill seasoning that is. Soda comes in a small 8 ounce tumbler and you are given a free refill. For the size of that meal, the one 8 oz of soda hits the spot. Like a 50s diner the seating is composed of fixed seating at the curvaceous counter or tables and chairs to suit about twenty or less at a time. The employees are dressed in diner garb and most are tattooed. I believe this old dude sitting across from us was the owner, also tattooed and smoking like a chimney. In Chicago it's banned, so to eat with a person smoking across from you can be annoying. Chain smoking, blah. People watching can be interesting here. I came here with my husband & his aunt and uncle because his uncle read about it in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel a few months ago. It is kind of like a little hole in the wall diner that is sparsely decorated except for a big display of kewpie dolls (which I can't stand). There is a menu behind the counter on the wall. That is the only menu in the place (so make sure you look at that before you sit down). The food comes out fairly quickly. The burgers are pretty good but nothing special. I got the chili and it was decent. They make their own root beer. Everyone at my table enjoyed the root beer but I didn't. I don't know what it is but I didn't like the taste....I prefer Sprecher's Root Beer but to each it's own. Would I make a special trip just to come here? No. But would I come here if I was pass by? Sure...I guess it helps that it's super cheap. Just an FYI - they don't do grilled onions...only raw onions on your burger. read more

The burgers can come with more than one patty and cheese with lettuce and other such fixings; Costs run $2-3. The fish burger was a fried patty with tartar sauce on bun, nothing else. We also ordered a root beer which was good, but strange. The float was served in a typical glass mug that was filled a third of the way with root beer and a gigantic gob of vanilla ice cream on top that you had to press into the glass. This is a very, very simple diner joint in a town which was seemingly abandoned along with the surrounding auto industry. The menu is as simple as they come. The decor is even simpler. Aside from the visual aspects of this "hole-in-the-wall" joint, the food was delicious! More specifically, the burgers. If you come here, order a cheeseburger. You won't be disappointed. Additionally, order a root beer (which is supposedly homemade)- it's as much refreshing as it is tasty. All around, the food is good. It's prepared in the front of the house, so you can see whose making your food and how. At a place like this, I appreciate that aspect. The service was good as well. Again, nothing fancy, it's as simple as it gets. But the people working this little joint are friendly. The ambiance of the little diner was adorable, even with the creepy dolls staring at you while you eat. This dive is a simple place with a simple menu. Burgers and fries is what you really want. Their burgers are good, a little on the smaller size. To me it tasted like a more fresh and real McDonalds. They are dressed with mustard, pickles, and mustard. You ask for mayo and there is ketchup on the tables. The fries were smaller krinkle fries. The food gets cold pretty fast so eat fast. For dessert get the root beer float. Man, that was a fast short trip. We loved Kewpee when we first visited in the summer of 2017 after moving to Wisconsin. But each visit since has been a little more disappointing. Lunch yesterday convinced us to finally give up. It just wasn't any fun. All the workers seemed grim and unhappy, and that put us in a foul mood too. So in addition to noticing that the food wasn't quite what it used to be, we also noticed for the first time how creepy all those dolls in the display case actually are. The root beer was still good, but we were almost ready to go before the server came by with a refill. And she skipped my wife altogether who had paid $3.15 for a root beer float. And there wasn't a single "sweetheart" or "honey" anywhere in sight. This is all very sad. But in our experience, when restaurant workers seem this unhappy, it's usually due to some gross assholery on the part of management. So I stopped here after reading some reviews on yelp while staying the night up in Racine. First off the decor is fun and the seating is as well. They have small stools at half circular counters. The food is only a couple bucks for everything but the burgers are small (but fresh!!) I compare it to a steak and shake almost. It's def worth a stop in to try and experience. Not sure what all the fuss is about. I had better burgers. Not sure how safe it is to keep the burger patties on top of the grill at room temperature for so long. I saw a girl handling money and then walking over to drop some fries in to the oil with her hands without washing them. I really wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is adorable although a little spooky if you don't like dolls. The burgers are solid, and the make a very good homemade root beer. The french fries and shakes are good and are of generous portions but the substance of my review and the reason for my rating is because of the follows. Aside of burgers and fries Kewpee's also offers fish and chicken sandwiches. Unlike the hamburgers which are made fresh these two items are mass cooked and are clearly premade. It is very reminiscent of grade school lunch food and so off putting that the rest of the meal is overshadowed. It is clear Kewpee's does some things very well but some of the thing on the menu are uneatable. Cute for atmosphere but not worth the hype. read more

Kewpee keeps it simple. Burgers, fries, homemade root beer (bottomless) for lunch and top it off with a malt or shake. The menu is on the small side but everything is dirt cheap. The interior is a retro-style diner lined with Kewpee dolls, so unless you have a pediophobia, you'll be sure to enjoy your time dining in. A fun place that the kids and I stumbled upon during a lazy Friday last summer. We enjoyed the ambiance...definitely had that classic diner look. The kids enjoyed the "tiny" counter where they could sit and feel big. Nice touch. Food was good. Classic diner fare. Burger was tasty and made the right way: on a flattop. Portions were generous. My only complaint is that they only accept cash. This is not convenient. They have at ATM in the corner, but again...a pain in the rear. Founded in the 1920s, Kewpee Lunch sits just blocks from Lake Michigan in Racine, WI and still serves up some burger joint faves. Their hamburger meat is ground fresh daily, which makes for a nice, juicy, flavorful burger, dressed especially well with cheese, onion, mustard, ketchup and pickles ("everything" at Kewpee). They also offer fish, chicken, or toasted cheese sandwiches and Grandma's homemade chili. Everything washes down nicely with one of Kewpee's hand-dipped shakes or malts or (even better) a root beer float made with their homemade root beer. Fries are crinkle cut and pretty good, but the cheeseburger is definitely tops. Four strapping young folks can eat at Kewpee's for under $20 total and each enjoy their own sandwich, fries and drink--such yummy food for so little money! Food aside, the atmosphere at Kewpee is something to behold. If dolls freak you out, the wall of Kewpee dolls might deter you from eating in. Then again, if you show up during the lunch rush, you might have to take your food to go anyway--those booths and stools at the counter fill up fast with young and old alike, and for good reason. The Kewpee motto "A pickle on top makes your heart go flippity-flop" still rings true in Racine and while I wonder if the heart palpitations are more cholesterol-induced than anything else, I'd be happy to belly up to the lunch counter for another cheeseburger any day of the week. This place was absolutely amazing. I cannot believe I have been here for almost 4 years now and this was my first experience at Kewpee's. My girlfriend and I went for lunch on a Wednesday arriving just before 11. They had just enough business to let us know why they place has been in business as long as it has, not overwhelmingly busy, wonder what its like closer to noon. We each got a cheeseburger (comes with standard toppings - ketchup, mustard, pickles, and chopped onion) and we shared fries, a bowl of chili, and a chocolate shake (which our server conveniently poured in to two separate cups). Love it. Been coming to this place for years; it never changes, and that's a good thing. Cheap, satisfying, hot and fresh patties, served up in a classic cheeseburger. It's not a gourmet burger, and it's not probably not the best burger you've ever had, but it just really hits the spot sometimes. They make their own root beer, and it's all right, but the key thing is, you can get it as a root beer float, and it's the perfect way to accompany your burger meal. I've had the chicken sandwich too, and it's a crisped up airy, chewy patty that reminds me of cafeteria food and childhood, but somehow I really like that too, served plain with just some pickles on top. We did a day trip up to the Racine area today. Kewpee Lunch was among our destinations . I am an exceedingly nostalgic person, cuz dang nabbit, things really were better than they are now ... well, maybe not things like small pox and polio, but I digress!!!! Kewpee's is just chock full of nostalgia. Yes it is full of Kewpee dolls, but when I was growing up, Kewpee's were a treasured prize at carnivals and fairs, to be adored, then broken and discarded. Those who say the Kewpee are creepy have no sense of bizarre American history. Those of us of a certain age, cherish our Kewpee memories, even if our actual Kewpees have long since populated landfills. As to the food.... nice, old fashioned burgers, hand pressed; that perfect balance between juicy and greasy. The fries were ok, nothing to brag about. The chili was very good, very obviously home made . They give you a little bag of jalapeno sauce to zip it up a tad. It was not spicy, but a bit zesty!! They serve home made root beer. Now that was a pure pleasure. Not as carbonated as I like my soda, but not flat either. It capped off a fun experience. The prices here are very reasonable. Two cheeseburgers, an order of fries, a small chili and 2 root beer came to about $10.00. Not bad for a filling lunch. 7/12/19 Burgers need good buns to make them the Great Burgers. I had a double burger and it was good excepting the bottom half of the bun was water or greased soaked. The noise level was high which is to be expected at 1pm and a crowed diner. The fries were mealy and super hot (yum) and the soda (root beer) homemade was so smooth and tasty.
