I really wish I went here the first few years I lived in Greenpoint instead of giving my hard-earned cash to the Associated on Manhattan. My one complaint is that they, like many other NYC stores, put some produce on styrofoam platters and shrink wrap it. I never understood why they do that. Good reasons to go here: - Parking lot if you have access to a car - You can get a week's worth of groceries in one place. (But the organic section is WAY overpriced, see below) - If you have a Key Food club card, you can get the really good sale prices on stuff. They frequently have 2-for-1 sales on things. - The DO take internet coupons but the checkout people might be unfamiliar with them. - Very friendly stock people & check out people. They all seem to have a good time, which is nice. - The music is kind of fun, too. It's set on some kind of streaming doo-wop station or oldies. - If you do go there on Sundays later in the day, chances are, you'll run into the Greenpoint firemen while they are grocery shopping. On multiple occasions, I've heard them arguing over who can cook better pasta & sauce. It's kinda funny. - They sell cases of beer! Maybe a bit over-priced, but again, as stated above, if you have access to a car.... - Coinstar! Not-so-good reasons to go here: - Produce is pretty bad unless you go at the exact right time. Weekends are NOT the right time for good produce. - They wrap their produce too much. - Their grocery carts are in horrible shape. Just Dirty. Wheels that don't work right. - You do have to check that the sale prices scan on things that are on sale. Most of the time, they do, but sometimes, they don't. The checkout people never seem to have a problem if you go back and explain with your receipt though. They are pretty cool about it. - Their organic section is SOOOO overpriced. The Garden or The Natural Market on Manhattan Ave. has way better prices. - Yeah, the bread here is in bad shape too. Most of the loaves are about to expire or seem to stick to the plastic packaging. The Deli bread is ok maybe, but still pretty depressing. - The meat doesn't seem very fresh. read more

Worst experience I've ever had at a grocery store BAR none. Never had an experience like this EVER. I have never written a negative review about a business before, but I have to make an exception for this place. I had to buy a couple items so I stopped in on my way home from work. Outside was advertised very prominently a sale on rib eye. I found the rib eye in the meat section also marked very prominently as being on sale on the package. When they rang me up I was told, very rudely, it was not on sale despite the multiple signs that it was. I stepped out of line to see if there was a replacement. In the meat aisle I decided not to buy anything because I couldn't tell what was on sale. Then I got back in line at the same register(express line) and my card was declined. I checked my phone...no notifications I checked my email(nothing about a bank issue) and my bank account(plenty of money.) I tried swiping again and it got declined again. I have no clue if this was an issue with the machine or if the register woman was doing something to make it not work(more likely a problem with the machine.) Either way it was HIGHLY embarrassing as it occurred in front of a line of people.I had no way to pay and stormed out meaning I had wasted about 30 minutes of my time. I then went to the associated super market on graham ave AND AS IF BY MAGIC MY CARD WAS PERFECTLY FINE AND WAS ACCEPTED AS PAYMENT FOR GOODS AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN IN EVERY STORE. read more

The cashiers are really nice and helpful and smart, and this place would be five stars if judged by them. But First of all, any store that has self-checkout sort of sucks. I don't want a retarded robot waiting on me. Keep people employed; keep human cashiers. There's, of course, the music. The worst music of the sixties, the absolute most atrocious schlock. Loud. If not for headphones, I'd never shop here. There are a bunch of security guards. This is good because it means jobs for them, but there's a weird "we don't trust you" vibe as a result. You can find some good prices here if you search, but someone's definitely making a boatload of cash. The neighborhood has many grocery options and I avoid this place except for a few sales. And even then, they enforce the whole "you only get the sale price if you buy all five" rule, which is annoying. read more

Best supermarket in greenpoint. It is not fancy, but well-stocked and has good prices. Only complaint: the styrofoam packaging that is used for the veggie's. Styrofoam is particularly bad for the environment and the packaging is just not necessary. read more

Decent grocery store. Has an alright selection of the kinds of healthy foods I like. Not enough organic fruits and veggies, but at least they're trying. I go here probably once a week because I work literally right around the corner, and it's on my way to the G train that I take to get home. I often make stops in Key Food to get some stuff to make dinner that night as it's probably the most convenient semi-large grocery store on my way home. I'm glad it's there for me when I need it, but I would never go out of my way to shop here. read more

Unfortunately, Key Food is one of only a couple larger grocery stores in Greenpoint. The meat selection could definitely be fresher. My partner has bought sausages that tasted off. Hands down the best food shopping experience in the entire neighborhood. This store has undergone pretty drastic renovations since the neighborhood yuppie boom of the 90s, and now is keeping true to form for the next wave of hipster invasion that has inundated the place with bearded vegan tattooed baseball cap nerd glasses beer drinking patrons that want it all. I mean you can almost get anything and everything at Key Food now, only disappointing the highest level snobs who still are afraid of cheap fluorescent lighting and linoleum tiles. They have a gluten free section. They have great thick slices of steak. They have quail eggs. They have bacon made from animals other than pig. They may not have a fresh grind peanut butter and almond machine, but even that is asking too much. The produce always looks delicious. The staff doesn't have any attitude problems. This place is a wonderful asset to the neighborhood. After being given counterfeit bills (TWICE) at Associated Supermarket (that place is disgusting and the staff is so rude), I needed a new grocery store. I never expected to find one 2 blocks away! Their always-expanding organic sections are pretty solid and way cheaper than the natural foods stores in the area. They've got delicious prepared foods, a fantastic bakery and a great deli. I was shopping there recently, with my crying infant son in the stroller. One of the young cashiers noticed my dilemma and helped me through the self checkout swiftly. So when I was leaving, I told the manger how helpful she was and he got right in the loudspeaker and told her she did a great job. The staff are super sweet and ready to help. And I always spend way less than I would at other stores around here. I can't believe I didn't find this place sooner! read more

Having been born and raised in Greenpoint I am partial to many of the places that I grew up in. Being that I still work in Greenpoint, I like to contribute to the area's economy in any way that I can. Even though I live in Middle Village now and there's other supermarkets near me, I always find myself doing my food shopping in Key Food while I'm in the area. First of all the store is in a shopping center so there is ALWAYS parking. Second, there is a laundromat next door so often on Friday nights after work, while my clothes are washing I'll be doing my food shopping and getting it done before I even get home! The prices are really great especially on their fruits...and when they have sales I love to stock up. The produce is always fresh and delicious, I love the deli and the fresh breads baked right on the premises. The managers are always available and very helpful and kind. One time it was 90 degrees outside, and I finished my shopping but still had to fold my laundry. I asked James if I could leave the cart in the store until I was finished with the clothes, and he had someone push the entire cart into the refrigerators in the back. It kept everything nice and cold until I could load it in my car and get it home. They also have the self service registers that I love. There's nothing that I Dont like about this store except I find that their hot meals arent that good - even though I tried several different ones and wanted to love them...their salads and sushi is good though for a quick meal in a pinch! read more

The Greenpoint Key Food is by far my favorite grocery store that I've found in NYC. It feels just like being in a grocery store back in the Midwest - nice and spacious, with aisles wide enough for you to actually use a cart in without getting claustrophobic, and more fresh produce in one aisle than you can pack into a whole chain of bodegas. The pros are nearly endless: - It's not tiny and cramped - They have a great selection. Want to get some apples? Take a stroll past their ten plus feet of bountiful shelves filled with all sorts of varieties of apples and see what tickles your fancy. Need milk? It doesn't matter if you want a gallon of skim or a half gallon of lactose free 2 percent milk, they'll have it. Same with basically anything you could possibly want to buy. If they have it, they'll have several varieties of it. - They actually have cheap knock off brands. Unlike some stores that advertise how everything they have is organic and gourmet and then charge you an arm and a leg for everything, here the cheap Key Food brand is proudly on display all over the place, letting you save a buck or two with most items you buy. No more 6 dollar boxes of cereal for me! - Everything isn't ludicrously overpriced. - They have self checkouts - The employees have always been friendly every time I've been there Unfortunately, there are some cons: - The meat is okay, but if you want to find something fancier, like some grass fed beef, you're going to have to go elsewhere. UPDATE ON THANKSGIVING CATERING Since posting my initial review, our family was contacted by both the Deli manager, David, and the corporate deli manager with a sincere desire to offer restitution. Apparently, our written contacts fell through the cracks, so it was only three weeks later that Key Food showed their true colors with a genuine effort to make it up to us. Key Food's managers went beyond our expectations to make things right by not only giving us a full refund, but offering to cater any upcoming event "on the house." The corporate manager was not only professional, but exceptionally warm and kind. When I expressed that I was afraid that some of our complaints weren't valid because they came down to personal preference--such as how well cooked the vegetables were--he kindly assured us that those preferences matter because its "your dinner for your special day." When we visited the store to receive our refund, both the deli and corporate managers were there to apologize in person, and we weren't allowed to leave without accepting a huge tray of holiday cookies fresh from their bakery (so nice!). I truly know now just how valued of a customer my family unit is and hope no one hesitates to consider Greenpoint Key Food for their catering needs, as any mistakes are handled by Key Food as opportunities to improve and perfect their practice. read more

I love their deli dept. They make great sandwiches, have smoked gouda, and let you sample anything. Try the European Turkey Salad. I honestly don't do much shopping in the supermarket itself but they store is always clean and the employees are helpful and friendly. Just stopped by here today and I must say this place is huge! Found everything i was looking for and then some. My favorite part was at the deli, this young gentleman by the name of Jose, who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the meats and cheese. After every order I placed he would place a slice on a sheet of wax paper for me to see if the cut was thin or thick enough to my liking. He handled all my orders well and in a timely manner. read more
