I'm a fan of this grocery store in my neighborhood. I ended up purchasing a few of the truffle oil hot sauces. While they weren't exactly cheap, they had a pretty decent price at this location compared to others. I've also bought other stuff here in the past for my weekly shop and I've always been happy by how much money I have saved during each visit. I've been going to Key at 530 Amsterdam, before that, Met, and before that, International - since 1981. Generally decent prices and super convenient, being one block from my apt. But yesterday I was disappointed when a gallon of whole milk was spoiled two days after I bought it and six days before the "sell by" date. I brought it back, nearly full, to exchange for a fresh bottle but the manager refused to replace it because I had no receipt. He had seen me there many times, but still refused. I realized they are plagued with shoplifters but there's no way is a gallon of milk is going to be sneaked out of the store. I felt a bit insulted. But - No problem. In the future I'll still be going there but for many items, I'll be spending a lot more money at Trader Joe's, instead. Key Foods loss will be far greater than $4.79. I'm on a fixed income and the cashier Jorge was not communicating that one of my cards declined, I assumed it didn't because the machine did not make any noise and he did not give me the receipt. When I swiped my second card to what I thought was to complete the transaction, he charged everything to that card. I stopped in this grocery store to pick up fresh herbs to make roasted potatoes. I was happy to find thyme and rosemary packs for $1.79 each. That's reasonable. I couldn't find what I was looking for at first but then I asked the store employee and he pointed me to the right place. Having helpful staff is always a good thing. Ugh. I like my Key Food supermarket where I live in Yorkville so much better than this one. It has mostly the same inventory with many of the same sales as the location on 2nd and 92nd, but the shopping experience here is horrible with the cramped layout. It felt claustrophobic with way too many people crowding the aisles. Checkout lanes also the same. All I wanted were some eggs. The food quality is good. But whatever foods your looking for, you should be able to find it. Freezer section has most everything you would expect, but not a lot of meals and pizzas. But, they have a decent Deli and reasonable prices. They will also deliver free in area with $50 purchase. The example, if you go in and find you have to many things to carry home easily, just ask cashier about delivery. They do have website to place orders also. Delivery starts at 11am. read more

My low cost, sale having staple Western Beef closed so now I'm looking for a new home. Key Food has sales but no selection. The deli looks barren but I guess putting the salads in buckets keeps them from drying out, but it's just so unattractive. Put some fake greens to fill up the space or something. I hope they will carry my favorite Boar's Head Three Pepper Jack cheese but I somehow doubt it. I was able to get a 20lb bag of Carolina rice on sale for $9 so that's excellent. But the store is simply too small for any decent selection. It's about the size of three bodegas but with a less diversity of stock than a bodega worth its salt would have. They had the large tub of Chobani yogurt only in plain and strawberry. Why no vanilla? They had Turkey Hill Ice Cream but no Black Cherry. I can go on and on about what they don't have. The meat looks very fresh. So now I don't have to go to Whole Food for decent meat. But there's no fish. Not even frozen fish sticks. How can you have the big 9 pack of Tower Isle Jamaican beef patties but not have frozen fish sticks? Their buyer makes some weird choices. I'm going to try the other Key Food (formerly Associated) further up on Amsterdam but it's not much bigger. *sigh* read more

I picked up items-headed to register, some Asian fool, bagged my groceries, came behind me to look into my pocketbook/ bag.. " asked if I was going to pay for a package of short ribs which I purchased from another location on Broadway. I politely pulled out the meat with my RECEIPT and shoved it in his face. There are so few grocery stores in the neighborhood. This is one of the last still open where you can just pop in a grab something. It is is desperate need of a renovation, but that probably won't happen. Key Food is fine for produce as well as canned and dry goods. Yes I am reviewing Key Food. I'm not sure if people look at Yelp reviews for supermarkets but I want my voice to be heard, dammit! Don't listen to the haters and the snobs, listen to me. And why do I like it? Because I like saving money. The prices at Key Food are undeniably better than any of the other grocery options like Whole Foods, Gristedes, or West Side Market (WS Market...don't even get me $tarted on how I feel about that Hotel Indigo-level store charging Four Seasons prices). Okay back to Key Food. They have everything you need from the basics to some specialty items. Produce and meat are good. Aisles are quite tight, but the workers and cashiers are all very C19 appropriate with gloves, masks, and limited handling of your stuff. Deli guys do a good job. And when you emerge onto Amsterdam Avenue, you can bask in the glory of having spent half what you would have at Westside Market for double the food. read more

The checkout woman was pretty rude and awful. While putting her hair back, she asked me if I wanted a bag -- twice. First time I said no. Then she told me to pull out my items out of the basket. Then she asked me again if I wanted a bag, like she didn't listen to me the first time. I said, you asked me that already and I said no. Weren't you listening? You asked me twice. For me, a good solid supermarket with reasonable prices and simple customer service is more than enough. Key Foods is annoying. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was a mob scene, there is an express lane for 8 items or less but I've never seen a line move so slowly. Not sure if it was a slow credit card machine or slow cashier or a combination of both but with two people ahead of me, I waited at least ten minutes to scan my peanut butter and get out of there. The store itself is kind of dirty and not cheap. Teas, coffees, regular grocery items, fruit, generally more expensive than products you'll find elsewhere. For example a box of cheerios here is $4 and at CVS up the street it's $1.99. They have a small deli counter and it just doesn't seem like the kind of place you would want to buy meat at. I came in around 10 something the other Thursday night to buy toilet paper and there was a big sale sign in front of the toilet paper that said $5.99. In fact, there were multiple sale postings hanging around various items throughout the store. When I approached the register, the toilet paper scanned for $8.99. I reminded the cashier that this toilet paper was on sale and told her about the sale price that was hanging. She stated that those prices are for tomorrow and that they just hung them up to prepare. Um? Is the store closed? Is it tomorrow? No, so why hang up signs prematurely like that without a date on them? How are customers supposed to know the sale price hanging is actually illegitimate for another 12 hours until opening the following morning? They're not. I said I didn't want the toilet paper and two other workers heard me say that. The right thing to do at the moment would have been to honor the sale price if you wanted to keep a customer. As I was paying for other items, a gentleman was at the register next to mine, and he too attempted to buy a product that had a sale sticker and the cashier proceeded to tell him the sale didn't start until tomorrow and he put the item back as well. If you are still open for business, don't go around the store putting up sale prices that don't exist until the following day unless there is a clear start date on them. To be honest, even if they did have a start date in the sign, still don't hang it up in the store. It's a tease and confusing and on top of that when you don't honor a sale price that starts in a few hours it shows you don't value your customers. Key Foods it's been real, see ya never. read more

Irksome supermarket. They have a weekly sale flyer specific to this store but many of the items are not there to purchase. No one seems to care about that ~~ or anything at all . . . but they will gladly suggest you return another day when it will be in stock. Never is though Advertised sale items often do not show the sale price at the register and you have to complain about the overcharge. Lettuce is watered (guarantees rot in 2 days) and most of the vegetables are brutalized and will soon rot in your fridge. Stock replenishment is done as you shop the narrow aisles. KEY FOOD I have been a client of key food for years , and I spend quite a bit of money every week. Today I went to the keyfood store on Amsterdam and 86 . I specifically asked if they could deliver my food tomorrow. I know it was late for today's delivery. The manager said yes. In the end, they said they could not deliver the next day and I had no way or any help to get the food home. I asked for a cart and they wanted an ID . Unfortunately I had changed jackets and did not have my I'd in the pocket. They asked for my phone. So I gave my phone. They were so rude. They said to me that if I did not go back in 15 minutes they would not wait even a minute. I told them I need the phone I. Case of emergency. They were not nice. I brought the cart back and the guy who manages the place flipped me the finger. They were so antagonizing that it made me really upset. I will never shop there again. read more

Just left this location to get a receipt for items that were purchased but no receipt was given. I first spoke with a woman who identified herself as the manager who 1st asked me how important was it to have a receipt for my items and then that I had to wait 30 minutes for it because she had something else to take care of. I asked if there was someone else free to help, at which time an asian man asked me very rudely why I needed a receipt in the 1st place, I told him that it needed to be given to my employer as proof of what I had purchased for the business. He then says to me that I will have to wait 30 minutes because "It isn't my fault your boss doesn't trust you with money". At which point I told him I'd be calling 311 and writing a review. The people who work at this Key Foods are SO nice but the space is tiny and dirty and there's just no way to make this into a decent food store without expanding. Coincidentally, the coffee place next door has closed down and there's a huge, vacant space there. It would be so wonderful if this Key Foods could expand! There is only one request when I frequent one's business, that you do not try to cheat me. If I am buying food items for work, do not cheat me. I go to the Deli Department. I order some Antipasto, potato salad, and an 8oz. portion of grilled chicken. No biggie. When I get to the register, I am, of course, playing with my phone, gettin' my 'check-in' on.... I just happen to look up and the cashier is charging me $17.00 for the sliver of chicken. What?! Really?! I say to her that there is an error because a half ounce of chicken cannot be 17 bucks. She twisted her face and rebuts, "Wha you cannot afford it?" Yo! Zero to 100, real quick! Some bi-lingual expletives and 'the eye' later, I return to the Deli. It appears that he printed and placed a sticker for a Boars Head block of cheese, instead. OK. Mistakes made. Human element. I am cool now. I return to that register. She rings up the new price, and grumbles the price of $74.52?!! Yes, I am just buying a pound of two deli salads and a sliver of meat. She rang up that false price product FOUR times. And merely shrugs her shoulders. In an earth moving baritone, I bellow to my fellow customers to check behind this particular cashier because she rings up anything and does not care. Bobbleheads respond. The problem is that it is easy to be distracted with the phone or headphones. It is so automatic to just swipe one's card and not look at what is being charged. Do not trust the process here at this Key Food. It's a shame because it is a neighborhood super market. read more

But this Key Food has goat, gizzards, oxtail, pork shoulder, plantains and other food items that, unfortunately, one cannot find anymore on the UWS. And what the heck are people talking about when they say it isn't expensive? Sure there are sales every now and then...which make some items a normal price. I am wheelchair bound and I have been buying from them for years, today I went there to bring all the bottles I had accumulated to get my money back from the deposit because I did need the extra money to pay the copay on a medication that I need it and do make some food shopping and I was treated like shit by the manager in the middle of a snow storm. There was a woman there that actually pushed me out of the way and didn't let me use the recycling machine. Went inside to let the manager know about it and I was told to go outside because they would not take the bag of water bottles. I am a senior and was treated very badly. This is our most convenient grocery store to us, so unfortunately we do have to come here when our favored is too much of a trip for the night (see Fairway). The Met is tiny, overpriced and it's really hit or miss whether or not you'll get fresh produce. There are weekly sales (which are good deals) but on average your necessaries, i.e. cereal, milk, beer, cost an arm and a leg. Also don't expect to find too much variety in brands. This is the ABSOLUTE WORST Key Food. It's teeny tiny like a pantry. People are crammed in here shopping, like you have to shop the aisles in a single file line. You can't carry the shopping baskets without turning and almost hitting someone and I'm not even sure how you're supposed to get around in here with a cart. They don't have a seafood counter or hot foods counter. The seafood selection is scarce. This place is just NO for me on all fronts. I left here too frustrated to shop. The Key Food Bodega. I went into the store around 6:15 pm on 7/13 (today) to purchase one can of baby formula. I was going to pay with my food stamps . I was told I could only purchase it with cash or with WIC. I was embarrassed so I walked to a near by cvs where I was able to buy the formula. They don't give a reason as to why they don't allow baby formula to be purchased with SNAP benefits.
