Does everyone need Pilates? No Does everyone need Pilates with Lauren and Tony...at a classical Pilates studio? Hell yes! I have been training at Key Pilates consistently for 7 weeks (2x a week) and I don't know how I lived this long without it. It has definitely helped improve the way that I move, walk, and run. With each class, I feel my core and glutes getting stronger, and my body becoming more flexible. I could go on and on. The atmosphere is welcoming. The vibe is fun. Lauren and Tony are so supportive and super knowledgeable. The work is challenging and beyond rewarding. I really don't know what else you could ask for in a Pilates studio. read more

History

Established in 2021.

Key Pilates began five years earlier as a spark of light during an otherwise dark time in my life. In the midst of dealing with several challenging family and personal issues, I held a lucrative position as a personal trainer. Yet I felt uninspired and unfulfilled. After earning a decade's worth of experience as a personal trainer with an emphasis on corrective exercise, I decided to sign myself up for Pilates instructor training. Despite the chaos in my life, I needed to be inspired again. I craved a deeper understanding of the science of human movement. I knew that doing these things would, in turn, give me the ability to positively impact more lives and better serve others. The vision of creating a learning environment for health and wellness to affect positive change in the lives of those in my community began to take shape. My life's focus and direction shifted when I found purpose and light again, and Key Pilates was born.

Meet the Business Owner: Lauren M.

Growing up, I was shuffled between two divorced, addict parents, with frequent stints at friends' and relatives' homes in-between. Caught-up in extreme dysfunction and struggling to manage it all, I found comfort in food. Weight gain followed and by the time I had reached my teens, I was suffering from an eating disorder - my life was chaos, and my self-worth was non-existent. I was 18 when I dropped out of school and became pregnant for the first time. By age 22, I was a young, single mom of two with only a GED and zero support network. Day-by-day survival was my singular priority. My physical and mental wellbeing took a back seat, and exercise was the very last thing on my mind. By age 28, I broke. I was mentally and physically exhausted and tired of the cycle of misery I'd found myself in. Something HAD to change. So, I started working out and enrolled in college. In April 2011 I decided to make a change…read more Why I did this - - A trip to my doctor brought news of high blood pressure (borderline medication); high cholesterol (the bad kind); over a healthy weight (minimum 10 lb. loss required); and an inflamed liver... - I was losing my natural ability to multi-task and remain focused while still achieving my desired results across the multiple projects I was working on - It was becoming increasingly difficult to get up and get my day started as my nights were restless and sleep was limited What I did - - Worked out twice a week with Grant Hill of MyBootcamp with less focus on cardio and more attention to sculpting the entire body with tools such as TRX Suspension Training and Rip Trainer, a fire hose, sledge hammer, and a 60 lb. tire - After the first month I added in a weekly spinning class and either pilates or yoga to keep my body challenged - Read books like Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson and Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes re-educating myself and challenging what conventional wisdom tells us about what we should eat - Treats are certainly allowed but for the most part I eliminated grains -- wheat, oats, barley, rice, corn, flax, etc. -- and avoided processed foods, anything with sugar What I didn't do - - Give up my wine -- this wasn't a suicide mission - Count calories -- I ate every time I was hungry - Excessive cardio -- focus was on strength training with occasional bursts of cardio - Avoid egg yolks and red meat as you are usually advised when watching cholesterol -- I ate more that I did previously What did I get after three months? - Dropped 20 lbs. - Lower blood pressure eliminating the need for medication - Lower bad cholesterol, back in the safe zone ...and my liver returned to normal. That was over a year ago and I'm still 20 lbs lighter than when I started - AND my last physical has me still in great health! Working with Grant was a life changing experience for me. If you're looking to get harder,…read morebetter, faster, stronger in the most efficient and functional way possible - MyBootcamp is it. I first met Grant at his indoor cycling classes at Revolve, and his rides were and always are mentally and physically tough. I had started to build up my endurance and strength through cycling, but the thought of trying out MyBootcamp was still intimidating. I mean, c'mon - I saw pictures of MyBootcampers pulling tires, slamming firehoses, and tossing sandbags. I thought I wouldn't survive my first session last March, but afterward I actually felt like a complete badass. I whipped that firehose and learned how to properly do kettlebell swings, among other things. Plus I was the only girl there (thanks Matteo, Rob, and Neal for letting me kick your butts that day :). (Side note: most sessions are filled with fit, athletic and attractive ladies, so all the single men in DC should definitely sign up... just sayin' ;) ) Four months later and I'm incredibly proud of how strong I've become because of MyBootcamp. Grant and Chris have taught me how to really push myself mentally and physically. They know exactly when and how to push me to get past my comfort zone, and because of that, my endurance/strength/mobility levels are at the highest they've ever been. Now I'm addicted to improving those levels with each workout, and my two favorite "Grant-isms" that stick with me every time are 1) There is never perfection, only progress; and 2) Being strong is only good if it's actually useful. According to the website its a "58 acre linear park running through the heart of downtown Frederick." When I think of Baker Park, I think of the bell tower or Carillon. I recently learnt this, but the Carillon is Maryland's largest musical instrument #ScoreOneForFrederick. The tower holds 49 bells which are played by a keyboard type mechanism at the bottom of the obelisk. It is played by a master Carillonneur John Wittman on the weekends. But also you can hear it's automated tolling on the hour when you're at the park any day of the week. The park was named after Joseph T Baker who was a local philanthropist and also the person who purchased the land for the park to built on in the 1920s. There is an organization of volunteers called the Friends Of Baker Park which helps to maintain the park and restore and renovate portions of it. All in all, it's a must see if you're headed to downtown Frederick. I could write endless words about Baker Park, but it is nothing compared to seeing it and experiencing it for yourself. That is the only thing that will do it justice. Walking along Carroll Creek has always been a delight, especially in the spring when the lily pads are out and the creek is teeming with ducks and other wildlife. It definitely makes you appreciate parks in general and how much they add to a city when they're well maintained and special. I think it's 100 percent aided in making Downtown Frederick a national destination to visit.

I remember I got a couple of free coupons from Wawa. I had a date that afternoon, and she met me here; she lived in Frederick. We walked around the beautiful park. Perhaps, there could be some more shade as it was lots of open space, but there were areas with trees close to Carroll Creek. Trails connect to the downtown Carroll Creek Park for an easy walk, which we walked to there on our date. This is a solid park with some amentities.

Key Pilates is becoming a sanctuary for me--a place of healing and joy. I'd never tried Pilates before, and after my first session with Kylee, I left the studio beaming and with a sense of relief. Kylee's expertise, patience, and positive energy have been invaluable, and I am grateful for everything I'm learning from her. Chronic lower back pain that had plagued me for months disappeared after a few sessions, it's tremendous that these movements were able to do this for me. Beyond physical benefits, I've experienced increased gratitude and positivity. Each session leaves me feeling refreshed, and rejuvenated. I am a newcomer to Pilates and was intimidated to try. When I saw the website for Key Pilates I thought this would be a great place to start. I am so happy that I did! Lauren starts you off with 1-1 sessions to teach you the basics the right way so that you start group classes with a good foundation. If you are someone who is shy about group group classes, this is a really wonderful opportunity. I now look forward to every class and feel my body changing for the better. This is my first time trying Pilates and I am so grateful to have found Key Pilates and Lauren. Lauren is an excellent teacher. She is so knowledgeable, patient and kind. She takes a lot of time with her new students to orient them to Pilates and the reformer and mat workouts. It can be a little overwhelming and I can't image if I had just been thrown into a class or didn't have the opportunity to properly learn the basics. At Key Pilates, that won't happen. Key Pilates is a perfect fit for all fitness levels, for those just beginning, the actively aging and myself who has been in the industry for 20+ years. Each time I leave I feel refreshed and ready to take on my day. As a former pilates instructor myself I know the ins and out and the benefits but I make it a point to take Lauren's classes as I learn and feel something new each time. I've had at least two sessions with her so far and I absolutely loved each of them. Kara is extremely knowledgeable and makes me feel super relaxed given I've only had a few one on ones so far. If anyone is out of shape .. it's me 58,back surgery , 3 grown children., and residual loss of feeling in left leg. about 40lbs overweight ... Do not a be afraid. Lauren (the owner) and Kylee (the appretice) who is a ballet dancer are awesome. They take there time with me and showing me moves I need to do .. I had to do something.. ,.
