I heard about this hidden gem from my sister-in-law, who is a chef and raved about Sunset's food. We went for breakfast a few weeks ago and found out her reviews were accurate! We enjoyed everything we ordered - Blueberry pancakes, breakfast pizza & an egg sandwich. We didn't realize that they would be such generous portions so we ended up taking half of it home. Iced coffee was very good too and the staff was friendly! The atmosphere is very casual, similar to the Town of Babylon Beach Huts. Similar prices too. read more

Key West is definitely a hidden gem in Islip. I discovered the beach this year through Facebook (amazing reviews on there) and am obsessed! The baked crabs are my #1 favorite but overall this place is the best. I'm not one to ever leave reviews but it deserves it. Date nights are perfect here. I love coming here & enjoying a frozen drink while munching on one of their very affordable delicious meals and watching the sunset all while live music is playing. This is a 5 start restaurant without 5 start pricing. ITS A MUST!!! You will not regret it. read more

What a surprise. Went there for the live musics and was expecting the typical dried-out "beach" burger with soggy chips. This was really good. Table service in a low key environment. The place is little on the rustic side. But if you can get past that, it's more than worth a trip. read more

This place was great for the price and for being on the beach I just wish they had more seafood selections and the security gives you a hard time on the way in if you don't live in islip .. However we will continue to come here throughout the season as my son loves the beach and it has a great set up and the food selection they did have is very good read more

Yesterday I spontaneously stopped by this "Diamond in the Rough". The owner, Sal was so damn nice and we instantly struck up a friendship with many common people that we knew from lacrosse, music, Nassau County, etc. As luck would have it or be created, my brother, Mike and I are playing an acoustic gig there tomorrow night 8/16 after a wonderful conversation with Sal. I love playing on the water, especially at sunset on LI. By the way, my lunch there with my buddy was really delicious. A tropical, healthy spinach salad with fresh apples, walnuts and shaved parmigana cheese was light and refreshing. It's a very peaceful, chill respite from the hectic pace we live and love... LI. Tonight was my first time visiting the sunset restaurant at islip beach. I was extremely impressed with the food! I had the fried flounder and it was fresh and very tasty. I also tried one of the owners homemade cannoli and it was amazing! Just like I remember from good old Brooklyn! The owner Sal was very nice and came around to talk with the customers. Unfortunately for me and my kids was a very bad service, actually we have no service at all...more than 10 customers came after us, they get service but us...they never ask us if we want to order. In fact one couple sat behind us and one of the waitress just pass us by not even looked at us and start taking their order....I think they don't served spanish speaking people or maybe we look like we don't have any money...this is so discriminating.... read more

Today was my third visit to Sunset Restaurant; the second for their colossal blueberry pancakes and like the owner, Sal promised, they were indeed the best I'd ever had with loads of blueberries inside as well as outside; not just turned out pancakes you get at other places where the blueberries are from a can. They were big and delicious!! I have also had their Caesar salad both chicken and shrimp; excellent. The chicken was moist and cooked just right and lots of it; same with the shrimp. Sunset is a laid back beach bar/grill simple as that. We had a veggie pizza and baked crabs which were perfect to munch on while grabbing a drink and enjoying (listening to, not participating in) karaoke. The flounder is my favorite here, very fresh, just a little squeeze of lemon and good to go. Awesome atmosphere and great food prices for on the beach eating! I have seen another review state that they did not get service, this is probably because it is not a sit down, waiter service place. You order food and drinks at the window and they bring it to the table you are sitting. The owners were there and were friendly, thanking us for our business and encouraging us to come back on the weekend for live music or Dj. We only had sliders and fries but the food was definitely great for the price and view! read more

Love this restaurant that is right on Islip beach overlooking the Great South Bay. The water view is wonderful as is the breeze on a warm summer evening. We had the lobster bisque, caprese salad, baked crab, caesar salad and a spinach and shrimp pizza....all very good. The only negative is a service charge if you use a credit card. read more

We stopped by here with our kids a few weeks ago for lunch with a view. Great little place. Good burger, cold beer and watched kids play in the sand. Owner Sal stopped by and we had a nice chat. So happy to have found this place! Nothing fancy, with its plastic tables and chairs and paper and plastic tableware. None of that matters here...it's still charming and inviting. The deck overlooks the great South Bay and Islip Beach, which is dotted with friendly beach goers and their umbrellas. A stage houses their nightly bands. The owner Sal is ever present, and may just visit your table to ensure your satisfaction and welcome your input. Now on to the food: delicious! Dinner last week consisted of linguini with red clam sauce, which was spiced beautifully and contained just the right amount of sauce and garlic. The garlic toast was yummy, with its melted cheese on top. The fried flounder sandwich was cooked perfectly...not over-fried as it so often can be! And a NICE sized piece of fish too boot! The rigatoni vodka was perfect. Not drowning in sauce, and packed with flavor! We ordered a pizza for the table. It's homemade goodness a real treat. Today, we gave it a try for breakfast. I had the egg and grilled veggie sandwich. The over medium eggs were cooked to perfection. The veggies consisted of lightly grilled zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, and onions, all atop fresh lightly toasted Italian bread with melted cheese. Absolutely delicious. Two people around me asked what I was eating, because it's presentation was lovely as well! My husband had another sandwich on the menu that he was equally impressed with. Sal swears by his pancakes. Many around us were eating them and raved. We will try those next time. We will definitely be getting as much of Sunset Restaurant in as possible before the season draws to a close! read more

Do NOT go for breakfast. While their day service has been excellent the few times I've been, My wife and I just waited over an hour after ordering and didn't even get the orange juice, water and coffee we asked for, never mind our breakfast. Multiple tables had to get up and leave after waiting 20 minutes and more for drinks. Needs a serious overhaul of organization for the morning crowd. read more

It was my first time here and I loved it! I came for the beach and saw that it recently opened. I was surprised to find the food was really good, definitely better than the usual shriveled hot dog. Food was pretty good but WAY OVERPRICED !!!!!!!!!!!! $ 12.95 for my chicken pannini that came with nothing included !! Had to pay $ 4.00 extra for my French fries. My husband got a cheeseburger which came with the French fries for $ 11.95, but he wanted bacon on his burger so that was an extra charge of $ 3.95. An order of fried calamari was $12.00 & 2 cans of soda was $3.00. Beers cost $6 for coors & $7 for corona. Mixed alcohol drinks were $7.00 & tasted VERY watered down, so when I ordered my 2nd drink I told the girl no ice, she even put extra vodka in it & it STILL tasted watered down, so I don't know what's up with that lol lol.. Cheap vodka? Watered down vodka? Anyway the owner Sal is very nice, & we loved the atmosphere of being right on the beach, they even have beautiful REAL palm trees on the deck, we felt like we were away on vacation on a tropical island somewhere. read more

Everything the previous reviewers state is accurate for the most part, only thing different is that it seems to have changed names recently, now it's called Key West Grill. It is a casual restaurant on the beach with a breezy fun atmosphere, palm trees and all! We did have to show a Town of Islip rec card to get into the parking lot. There were plenty of spots, which made us pleasantly surprised because it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. It has a very relaxed atmosphere with good food and great service. It is located smack dab right on Islip Beach and has an awesome view of the Great South Bay. The day we were there, there were a number of sailboats out, it was a pleasure to have a drink, sit and watch them. You can order food to bring back to your beach blanket or sit at a table and be served. There was live music when we were there, one man playing the guitar and singing, which we really enjoyed. The food was fresh and the portions were good. My husband ordered a chicken panini, which was pretty big, which he really liked. I ordered a salad with grilled chicken as an add on. It was right up my alley: really fresh baby spinach, walnuts, avocado, and apples with a vinaigrette dressing. The only thing I didn't like was that the grilled chicken had too much seasoning on it. There are a few cons that I am surprised that no yelpers have previously mentioned: 1. The bathrooms are right next to the restaurant portion, we could hear flushing and the hand dryer throughout our meal. 2. There is a service charge added on for credit cards. read more

The Food: Sorry, but the food was horrible. Absolutely lousy and NOT cheap. We were 3 people and ordered 4 dishes. The calamari was hard and chewy, then 2 chicken paninis were flavorless and then a shrimp burrito that had almost all rice and maybe a total of 3 baby shrimp. We had one alcoholic drink and our total was $67 bucks without tip. The Atmosphere: Very nice. Nice music, nice sunset and beach scene, and family friendly with kids all over. In summary - I do not recommend this place except maybe for a beer and the pizza which looked good. The dishes we ordered I would not suggest. read more

First time since they moved from the beach to Main Street, but I am already loving it! It is a bit pricey for some items like flounder or salmon, but very tasty. The atmosphere is like being at a beach. I had the broiled flounder with brown rice and veggies. Had tea to wash it down with and finished off with the best damn cheesecake in the world. The whole dinner was awesome! As I stated earlier, pricey, but good. I highly recommend it. read more

This is not a typical sit down restaurant. You order from the establishment to the right of the deck, you can then be seated at one of the tables that overlook the beach and bay. The owner Sal actually brought out our meal and mixed drinks, which honestly exceeded my expectations. I ordered the large chicken panini anticipating a small would leave me hungry, when it arrived I was surprised at how big the portion was . A new place on the beach! Tables with great views of beach and palm trees on the deck! Beer, wine, frozen drinks and snacks, burgers, burritos, pasta dishes. Go for the baked crabs! We just came back from Delaware and had nothing like these! Sal the owner came over to each guest to make sure they are happy. Looking forward to breakfast to be served starting soon. The weather tonight was a bit cloudy and windy, but didn't dampen our enthusiasm for this place. We were told there's live music on Sat and Sun and a DJ on Friday.
