So..... "We're gonna grab steamies. How many do you want"? yells out a couple of Canadian poker buds. "IDK several or a dozen" I yell back from the restroom of the hotel room thinking I heard 'wennies' as in small sausages. 30 minutes later, uncontrolled laughter as they hand me a huge bag. "Here's your dozen". * * * * * * A Montreal institution that for 94 years has focused on one thing, steamies. Take a Shopsy's slender seven incher, warm it and stick it in a smaller than the States side ball park bun, slather it with whatever, maybe top it with a heaping pile of vinegary coleslaw and there you have it. The hotdog, not natural (nitrates and phosphates). No one said this was health food. Here's the thing, meaning no disrespect to those who grew up with these doggies but they are just hotdogs. Love the addition of the slaw but still just hotdogs. Inexpensive. $2.50 - $3.50 each. Great counter service. Nuff said.

The restaurant is very small and more of a take out counter, with no seating, there is also a drive through. Note they take cash only, there are ATMs on site. We ordered 2 types of hot dogs and a poutine - the hot dogs were good, michigan sauce could have been more flavorful, it was lacking some sweetness. Poutine was a disappointment - the fries were not salted and sauce also lacked some flavor. It was thin and runny, closer to a BBQ type of sauce like St-Hubert style rather than the thick brown gravy. I found everything could have used more flavor. There is only 1 size poutine and it was on the small size. Considering this is some type of historical institution that's been around since 1929, I expected to be charmed but the food was very average and on the expensive side.

From the unique table designs to the imagery on the walls, reminded me of Friendly's back home. I ordered a french onion soup which was probably not the best move as we were trying to have a quick lunch, oops. I shared it and we used the excess broth for dunking our sandwich's in. Very tasty soup. Came out hot but cooled quick. Club sandwich was enjoyable. Would have been better probably on the bagel as the sandwich bread didn't quite hold well together with all the fixings in it. Overall a place I would recommend. Bathroom is not accessible as kt is down a large flight of stairs so be cautious with that.

We walked around a lot in this area and noticed that Dunn's looked old school and had smoked meat so we gave it a try. The wood and leather booths gave this 99 year old establishment an old school vibe. We were seated pretty quickly in a small booth. Hockey was on TV so that's a good sign. I was not super hungry so I ordered the smoked meat on a bagel, Andrew got the sandwich. The food came out fast but not overly fast. My bagel sandwich was tasty. I liked the thin cut of meat. The fries were as soft as mashed potatoes. They were warm but not close to crispy. Andrew liked his sandwich as well. The bathroom was quite the experience, it was at the bottom of a long, steep staircase in the basement. It worked, lighting was ok, but it was a climb out of there! Come here for a simple quick bite and stick to the sandwich. It's good!

We decided to come after a long drive since it was Halloween. When we walked in, the staff were dressed up, which was super cute. They even offered us candy I took a KitKat and my boyfriend grabbed a Coffee Crisp, lol. There was an older couple nearby having fish and chips, and it smelled amazing. We decided to go classic: a small poutine, hot dog, and hamburger with a drink. Our total came to around $35-$38, which might sound a bit high but honestly, I'm used to those prices and it was totally worth it. I loved how fresh their cheese was SQUEAKYYYY I'm pretty sure it comes straight from a local farm. The fries were perfectly crispy, the coleslaw was finely shredded, and the hot dog had that soft, fluffy bun that's just right. The hamburger had that smashed-style feel thin, juicy, with just mustard, onions, and cabbage instead of a pile of toppings.
