I was in the area and went here with some friends for lunch. Khun Kay Thai Cafe is a small, cute restaurant and hard to miss, although there was not a lot of parking. I got the lunch special, which is offered Monday through Friday, from 11am-3pm. It comes with a soup and veggie egg roll. I got the pad see ew with tofu, which was pretty good. Ordered food to go. Staff were friendly and helpful. Ordered the mango curry beef which was tasty and not too spicy, had been plus chunks of mango in it. Ordered the pork pot stickers which were slightly crispy on the outside and delish, didn't taste like pre frozen dumplings from Costco. I ordered 2 desserts, the fried banana which came with a different breading, not the wonton wraps you're used to, so I wasn't a huge fan of this one. From service clerk with his talkative and friendly demeanor to the comfort of sitting wherever I like this place is a must. I feel like other places are talked about a little bit more, but this place needs a little bit more credit. The food was fresh it was extra hot and definitely filled my belly to perfection. I was in the mood for soup so I had a great tom yum with shrimp. The vegetables were just so fresh and abundant. The chicken skewer and rice also hit the spot for warmth. They have their own spice bar that you can serve yourself from. With a great variation. Parking is easy though there is a lot of construction going on right now on Montrose, so be patient. Khun Kay Thai was fine but nothing spectacular. I had a company DoorDash credit to use and opted to get several dishes for take out. The order was ready very quickly, within about 10 minutes, and pretty warm when I picked it up. The restaurant is located right off Montrose Blvd with plenty of parking out front. Walking in to pick up my order, they have a small patio and several tables inside, however it feels more like a take out kind of restaurant. Red Curry (5/5) - this one was by far the best of the order. It's super rich and creamy with a coconut milk base and has several fresh veggies. Yum! Thai Ginger (4/5) - nice flavor, slightly overcooked but still enjoyable. Scallion pancake (2/5) - this is one of my favorite appetizers but unfortunately this was super dry and flakey. Typically a nice pancake is crispy on the outside with a soft inside but this was dry all of the way through. Tom Ka soup (2/5) - very salty and missing a few classic ingredients. The traditional recipe has lime leaves and lemongrass root. This soup had what appeared to be cilantro and no lemongrass (unless it was strained out). Overall, the dishes were fine but I would probably opt to try somewhere else for my next Thai order. read more

This is one of my favorite spots in the Montrose area for a quick, delicious, reasonably priced meal. It's a smaller spot with counter service. We've been going there for close to a decade and never had a dissapointnent. They offer a solid selection of the usual curries and noodles as well as rotating/seasonal specials. Inline their mango curry, and they have done a very nice pumpkin curry around Haloween. Ialways start with thr fish cakes, one of my Thai favorites and not common in all Thai shops. Spice levels from are from 1-5 to suit all tastes and even the 5 is not brutally hot, but I'm happiest at 4. Everything is cooked to order so it's not quite grab-and-go fast, and your dishes likely won't all come out at once. It's clean and bright and pleasant inside and they have a few outside tables in front for when the weather is nice and the trsffic on Montrose is light enough to talk and breathe over. Limited parking right in front but they have expanded parking right next door on Montrose and I've never failed to find a spot. Soft drinks and a fair selection of Asian and local beers. read more

Worked all jight, woke up craving for Thai, I Ubered knowing it was gonna get expensive. I had my hope on m food.... Well let me tell you, I didn't know you can mess up on Papaya Salad. It was soggy rather, not crunchy. Flavor was good, typical lime and fish sauce. I ordered fiery and it came extra mild???!!! Tom aka with shrimp-I ordered large. Think they sent me Tom Yum not Tom Ka, it was not at all had coconut milk. Bit on the salty side. Flavor 3/5. Disappointing I wanted that full & creamy coconut based Tom Ka. Nam Sod was the best out the three dishes. But look at the portion, it looks like a lunch special not a full entree. O and sadly, I ordered Jasmin rice and got a plain white rice not Jasmin rice. This was also very disappointing as Thai Jasmin is very aromatic and flavorful. I ordered all my dishes fiery or flaming and all came extra mild to me. None of the dishes had any kick whatsoever. Despite few disappointing factors, overall flavors were good, Papaya salad and Nam Sid went well together, delicious to make lettuce or cabbage wrap. Surface level parking outside, cute little place. You order at the counter and they give you a table number. The lunch special is $12 and you get a soup, salad, egg rolls and a pretty large portion. I have had a lot of bad pad see ewe lately so I was cautious but they absolutely blew it out of the park. It was SO GOOD. Well I came here with a taste for some authentic Thai food. I was drawn to the Black rice, green cury, and mango and sticky rice. Hmmm, I was disappointed though.. The black rice was actually white rice mixed in to dilute the black rice and cooked in a sauce that made all the rice black/purple.. I was disappointed to see that it wasn't the black rice that was advertised because it wasn't as healthy as the pure black rice. The Green curry was diluted also.. it wasn't green but white because of all of the coconut milk. Lastly the mango and sticky rice.. ah they just gave me plain sticky rice that wasn't sweet. It should have that sweet coconut sauce on it, but not this place. read more

Not sure why there are so many average reviews. Khun Kay is a no frills cafeteria style eatery with awesome prices and great food. They have a large parking lot out back and was about half full on a Friday. Their lunch combo for $8 was amazing. It comes with a slightly sour vegetable soup, a nice little chicken salad, and a rotation of different dishes depending on what day you go. The food took a little while, but I could tell it was cooked fresh for me. The pad Thai was delicious, even with no meat. I liked the beef in red curry and the 2 egg rolls. Everything was hot and fresh and the Thai tea was great too. I can't believe I got such a great home-cooked meal for about $10. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for over 5 years now, and I'm always left satisfied. For its location, I'm surprised at how affordable they continue to be! The workers here are always so friendly and helpful with ordering their food. Portion sizes are great, they're always so much food leftover that we always end up with leftovers. It's nice that they have an island by the ordering counter filled with silverware, to-go boxes, extra condiments, etc. So you never have to feel like bothering a worker for that stuff. It's a super cute and lowkey restaurant, and I love coming here whenever I'm craving Thai food! I ordered the Indonesian Fried Rice, which honestly in my opinion is similar to like thai fried rice but a little sweeter and spicier. Met friends here today for lunch, four of us. We ordered three lunch specials (garlic chicken with salad) and one large won ton soup. The cashier was quite helpful and courteous. Unfortunately the food was bad, all of it. For the three of us that had the garlic chicken, we will not be coming back. The person having the large wonton soup said "it tasted like dirty dishwater". She left the bowl untouched after two spoonfuls and one wonton. He was able to answer all of our questions and offer recommendations to us based on our dietary preferences (vegetarian, no eggs). We ended up ordering two vegetarian noodles dishes and also a panang curry based on the recommendations. The portions were quite large, but we were a little unimpressed by the quality of the food. I think a part of this was because of potential miscommunication -- in addition to the food being vegetarian friendly, I think that the person over the phone believed we were ordering gluten free. My first experience dining in last month was nice. My second experience ordering takeout was not. This place is situated in a low key area and it's quiet inside with plenty of seating. I ordered the tom yum soup with chicken (spice level hot) as well as the pineapple curry with shrimp. Is was decent overall. There were broccoli & green beans in the pineapple curry which I was not used to. The staff is polite. However,  I ordered the exact same thing yesterday for takeout and the tom yum was mild and the pineapple curry was pretty awful. The curry was super gritty and the color was off. The broccoli was brown on the ends and the carrots were really mushy... I am surprised they really packaged this for someone to eat and they accepted payment for it. This was too great of a hit or miss so I will not return and definitely wouldn't recommend takeout. read more

Ok, so it's been a few years since I've been back since being super disappointed with the change in ownership which lead to the change of their famous pad Thai. I'm giving them 4 stars since I've been coming in consistently for the last few weeks. So let's start off with a few things. I chose to order from Kuhn Kay for convenience. I am very sorry I didn't read the reviews. The food did arrive quickly and was hot! The spicy Pad Thai was flavorless - only taste if any was the heat of pepper to spice it up. It included, maybe, two bean sprouts and no scallions. It was served with a small sprinkle of peanuts and a wedge of lime. Would NOT recommend. Veggie green curry was a nice portion for the price, however, I am looking at a container filled with broccoli, cabbage, and two carrot slices. I have ordered green curry in many places from Seattle to Tampa. It has always come with eggplant, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and/or peppers. One time with a ton of onions. However, never just mixed frozen veggies. Imho green curry does not compliment broccoli. I would've preferred thai style since Thai is in the restaurant's name. And I LOVE broccoli!! read more

A friend of mine was really excited to take me here as it's one of her favorite places and somewhere I had never been. We ordered quite a bit of food, two curry dishes and two orders of spring rolls. The spring rolls were solid but the sauce was really where it was at. It was almost something in between an orange sauce and a peanut sauce. Sadly I ran out of sauce before running out of spring roll, which were kind of bland without the sauce. Between the two curries I definitely prefer the pumpkin/orange one. I would give that one a four, but the green one I was not a fan of at all. While the green one had spice it didn't have much other flavor and had I just walked in and ordered that single dish I probably would be giving this place a two. I guess it all averages out in the end and really a 3.5 (which is the current average score on Yelp) is probably right on par for what it deserves. read more

Great appetizers at frat prizes. I ordered the wings and they were so crispy and juicy. I also got an orange chicken plate, it was okay to be honest. It is a family owned place and will definitely come again. However, I wasn't too impressed by the chicken I got. I will definitely try this place again whenever I am in this part of town. Came on a Thursday and got veggie soup, shrimp salad, pad Thai, and chicken with rice and let me tell you, for 8 bucks plus the cost of a soda this place is ACES. Just be careful of their powdered chilli, put a little on my pad Thai and am currently dying. Other than that this place is a great lunch value in the montrose area and honestly what's to stop you from picking up at lunch to go and reheating for dinner. It's enough to feed two! So yum! My "go to" Thai spot in Houston. Tried them all - this is the most consistently fantastic place in HTX. The menu is vast and has all the Thai favs as well as solid Chinese options. Staff is great - and restaurant decor is simple, clean and welcoming. My favorites - chicken yellow curry and chicken red curry.....be careful their idea of "medium" spicy is what most classify as hot...I DARE ANYONE to try the spiciest choice ...I doubt anyone has ever been able to. Thai dumplings, scallion potato pancake and spring rolls are fantastic - also recommend the Thai tea. Love the place - BUT if you order anything from here for delivery by ubereats be very careful if you add any veggies or change anything on any entree - they charge you a ton for any additions or changes - you won't know the cost till after you've ordered and its gonna be costly!! read more

Khun Kay is my go to Thai restaurant. The restaurant itself doesn't have the best ambiance but the delicious food makes up for that and I usually order to go anyways. I love that they offer black rice for all of their dishes. Three of my favorite dishes from here are the yellow curry (spicy level 3 is the perfect amount of spice without being overwhelming), tom yum soup, and cracklin cod. I also really enjoy the black fried rice and red curry. I have been eating here for years and they continue to be consistent with their quality of food. read more

Yay! I'm a fan. No, really. I literally keep telling people about it. This place is no joke. They have some really authentic dishes on their various menus that they have up by the ordering station. You should definitely go. Like now! On my most recent trip, I ordered the cracking seafood which was the special of the day. It was good but I was not a fan of the mussels. I added the sauce that was served with the scallion pancakes (another one of my faves) and it really made the mussels taste so much better. It's now no longer a secret but I think people should not be stripped of joy and therefore must Khun Kay Thai should be their next destination.
