For drinks, I got the Mekhong Mojito and it was sweet and refreshing! For appetizers, we got the crispy squid and the crispy wonton- crispy squid was good but if you had to choose between the two, get the crispy wonton! As for the entree, I ordered the Khao Soi with shrimp and my friend ordered the spicy red snapper. The curry broth with coconut milk was fragrant and with the toppings that came on the side (i.e. lime, onions/shallots, mustard greens, etc) enhanced the dish. The flat egg noodles were bouncy and the shrimp was solid. If you're stuck between choosing a curry dish and a noodle dish, get the best of both worlds and order the Khao Soi! As for my friend's spicy red snapper, I tried a bite and the spices/texture in the dish complimented the fish very well. For dessert, we ordered the classic Mango Sticky Rice! The mango was soft/sweet, the rice and sauce had that salty coconutty flavor. They have that street food vibe as a well representation of their name, Rim Tanon, which means roadside. With dedicated parking that fills up quick during peak times, it may be difficult to locate parking as it is shared with a few other restaurants and the spaces are quite tight. We tried their appetizers including Salmon Rolls (flavorfully packed with cream cheese, salmon, and spinach in a crispy shell and loving that actually spicy mayo on the side), Thai Style Jerky (deep fried and sun dried marinated pork and beef served with sticky rice rolls and side spicy tamarind sauce, a bit too dry/chewy), Fried Tofu (perfect little triangles, so good by itself or with the side sweet and sour sauce with crushed peanuts), Chive Pancake (deep fried and chive packed triangles with a slight chew to it, great by itself or with it's spicy soy sauce companion). As for the mains, the Spicy Seafood Fried Rice is a good value as it was loaded with all sort of fruits of the sea (shrimp, squid, and mussel), with prominent lemongrass and kaffir lime aroma, but a bit wet or moist for a fried rice dish, the Crabmeat Omelet is served with a nice portion of lump crabmeat where you can taste the flavor of the seafood and add sriracha to liking, and the Beef Pad See Ew is made appetizing with wok charred flat rice noodles along with a savory blend of soy sauce, Chinese broccoli and egg. The portion size is alright and filling for a moderately hungry individual, though it would've been even better a tad bigger for those coming in hangry. I finally got to experience Rim Tanon's delicious Glory. I appreciate it that the service was fast and very attentive. The Ambiance was laid back and relaxed. Out of the several Thai places I've tried in Houston, Rim Tanon doesn't quite reach the standard that other places have met. I must qualify that statement by saying I've heard the curry was good here, but I got drunken noodles anyway - perhaps my rating would change with a different entree. The drunken noodles were quite oily (and the oil tasted old) and without much flavor. The texture of the noodles were still good, but they didn't quite make up for the overall lacking taste. The fun atmosphere and the quick and mild service did add to my overall experience however. For dessert, I got the Thai style shaved ice with half and half of the green and red sauce. They didn't taste too different to me, but perhaps I was distracted by the variety of toppings in it, especially the corn (can't say I loved corn in my shaved ice but that's just my opinion!). No reservations here as it's a first come first serve on tables and it can get busy.. Ordering/checkout is all fairly efficient. Got to try alot of the appetizers the first time from the papaya salads to the skewers. All were pretty delicious. I've enjoyed the khao soi here recently as the broth was rich and savory, the crispy noodles were a great textural contrast.. I did try some the pumpkin curry my friend got and it had a quite a kick for only a medium spice level. I did enjoy the presentation with little bowls filled with fixings to add in. Many of their modern take on traditional Thai dishes will start at Mild spice level, but you can go higher to medium or high.. The parking is very tight and shared with other bars/restaurants in the area so you may have to go more street if busy. I bought the food to go and had a great experience. I bought the salmon roll, pad thai, and khao soi. The salmon roll is such a unique appetizer. I am not a fan of spinach but I can barely taste it when I had a roll. The pad thai was great! Having an "egg bowl" hold the pad thai together was interesting. I am not sure if I am a fan of that, but, I enjoyed the noddles, sauce, and chicken in my pad thai. Wow is all I can say about the khao soi. It is spicy, it has coconut, it has crunch. Met up with a friend at Rim Tanon in upper Kirby! I've been here many times now and it has hit every time. We started off with the chive pancake as an appetizer. I had this before and remembered really liking it. It has a unique texture. It has a crispy exterior since it's pan fried but the inside is soft and chewy. The spicy black soy sauce that comes with it is good too, it's thick and pretty rich. For my main I got the shrimp pad see ew. The stir fried flat rice noodles had a nice wok flavor as well as a rich and sweet flavor from the dark soy sauce. I love how the eggs are in chunks and the shrimp was very good as well. There is no shortage of Thai eateries in the inner loop but few are as popular and as well regarded as Rim Tanon, located in the heart of Upper Kirby. Many Thai folks I've known have regarded this as one of the city's best contemporary Thai options and I would be hard pressed to disagree. One of their most memorable traits is having a wooden replica Thai style building, complete with abundant outdoor seating, a group friendly layout, and a bustling Thai speaking staff that can get overwhelmed night in and out. The ambiance is vivacious at times and chaotic during other days. I've learned not to call in during these peak service hours and would recommend ordering from their website instead. The wait times can be long during their busiest nights and thus the dedicated waiting area in the lobby is clutch. They consider their food to be modernized Thai and the flavors are on point. The standouts for the starters would be their satey ($10) and salmon rolls ($9). THe latter is so good that I'd consider ordering it every time. I would also consider ordering a soup, be it tom yum ($9-10) or their "light soup" ($9-10). Their papaya salad is a bit paltry at $12, but there is a spice kick that definitely hits, which is in all the salad options. While I don't love the portions for the crabmeat omelet ($18) or pad kaphrao ($15), I do appreciate the heat from any of their curries, especially the panang and massaman curry ($15-17). The khao soi gai ($17) was a nice surprise and the pad see ew ($15-17) was quite good. Pad thai ($18) lovers may find the noodle dish a tinge sweet, but the chili powder and lime cut through it quite well. Beware of the parking, which is a dedicated lot but a tight squeeze in every corner. Big cars should stay home. Group dining sessions should be reserved ahead of time and this is definitely ideal for a casual lunch or dinner date. An ambiance suggestion: I do hope they consider rocking some kind of Thai pop (#1) instead of the ad-laden trendy music that tends to get airtime. My bff loved papaya salad and grilled pork skewers here. We added Pad Kee Mao and Spicy Red Snapper to our lunch order. Grilled pork skewers are authentic and delicious. Papaya salad is also very good and refreshing. The Lao version has Pla Ra which gives it a bit more umami. It's not overpowering and quite well balanced. Decent parking lot size but the spots are tight and during peak hours, it can be hard to find a spot. Do not bring a big car! And carpool/make a reservation or prepared to wait if coming with a large party. For all the popularity, the restaurant size is small and I do hope they one day move to another location that's larger because the wait can get quite long during weekends/peak hours. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao, aka Drunken noodles, which is my go-to Thai dish. Although I have ordered it from here before, this visit's was subpar, unfortunately. The chicken was dry, the noodles were a bit bland, and at the regular spice level, I could not taste any spiciness. I had to ask for some chili oil to add on top. Others who had ordered 4/5 spicy could not taste the spiciness either. Parking at their peak hours is nightmare-ish. They take your order on their iPads and walk you through all the options. Most dishes can be customized with your choice of protein for no cost. No up charge for beef or shrimp. How crazy is that. The Houston restaurant week menu is an even better deal for only $39. You can choose from many of their full sized appetizers, entrees and desserts. We got the beef satay which comes in large serving dish and was tender and flavorful. We also got the chicken wings which were also tender and flavorful. They came in a deep bowl so they stayed nice and hot. We got both the Tom yum and Tom kha soups with shrimp. Both were large portions and authentic flavors. The third course we got the Crying Tiger, Pad See Ew and Massaman Curry. All were ginormous portions. The ribeye was very flavorful and tender, but a bit fatty. I don't mind since it's a ribeye but others may not want the fat and grizzle. All the desserts were good, but we liked the coconut ice cream the best. The Mango shaved Ice was also very good. It has been a year since I last visited. The inside dining area still looks the same with roughly 14 dining tables/booths that seats 2-4 people. There is also an outside covered dining patio. We were seated inside for a party of three. It felt like we were dining in an igloo at 60 degrees. Be sure to bring a light jacket or ask for patio seating if you get cold easily like we do. I noted that the menu has been updated, more variety including a special menu item - boat noodle soup $16 where you can choose pork or beef for an extra $2. It tastes great, even came with a side of crispy pork skin and a spicy dipping sauce. The salmon rolls and Thai sausage were great starters. The pad see ew and the Rim Tanon noodle soup are both good too. Service was quick for seating and getting our orders placed. It took a while to get someone's attention for the latter part of our dining experience, to ask for a to-go box and to order desserts, to get our check along with a refill on water. The portions were huge, the food was very flavorful, and we definitely took some food to-go. I ordered food from here via DoorDash. The Pad Thai was excellent! Having the option to exclude the fish sauce was amazing. I will wish more Thai restaurants have this option. The portion of Pad Thai was extremely generous. It was enough for four meals. I also ordered the scallion pancakes. I haven't been able to eat a scallion pancake in years because I am gluten-free as well as being a vegetarian. I was so excited to see that they had a gluten-free option for this on their menu.
