Kibi's Cafe is a bánh mì shop located in the Atrium, across the street from the old DMV office. I had this place bookmarked long ago. Finally got a chance to try them out when my friend M and I came here for lunch on 02/08/2023. We walked in at noon and the staff was busy putting orders together, presumably most were from their online ordering system since there were only a couple customers waiting for their food. The interior was tiny with no seating. There were a couple small tables on the sidewalk outside. We ordered two grilled pork bánh mìs, a 3-pc order of shrimp summer rolls, a Vietnamese coffee, and a can of soda. The total was just a bit over $31 with tax. We got our food in about 15 minutes. Portion wise, the sandwiches and summer rolls were noticeably smaller than most places I have been to. Taste wise, they were absolutely delicious. Every bite was packed with freshness and taste. The grilled pork in the bánh mì was wonderfully marinated, and the taste of lime really stood out. Produce used was fresh and crisp. For the Vietnamese coffee, it was about 1/4 cup of coffee and 3/4 cup of ice (I watched the preparation). Not worth it in my opinion. Overall, Kibi's is a nice place to grab freshly made bánh mìs and summer rolls. Price point here is a bit high, but you will definitely get quality food. I will return. 4 stars. They have added a lemongrass tofu banh mi! Still the best banh mi I have ever had. I have to give my appreciation to the owners. They do such an amazing job crafting these sandwiches. It's not easy to nail every component. But, they have nailed it! The bread- perfectly toasted! Has a nice crunch and soft inside. I have been to so many places where they don't even toast the banh mi bread, which makes it too soft and chewy. Toasting the bread makes a huge difference. The veggies- they are dipped in some magical sauce that is delicious! This is probably what makes their sandwiches so good. The sauce is addicting and savory. They also nailed the proportions. It sounded like it would be delicious, but the tofu and veggies were bland and didn't seem marinated at all. What a cute little restaurant tucked into one of the supporting legs of an office building! Kibi's is one of those places that you just get a feeling about, and my instincts were right! I parked to go to another restaurant when I saw Kibi's. I knew (had that feeling) I had to try it! I'm not disappointed! I ordered the Bun salad w/pork and an extra protein side of tofu. The pork and tofu were seasoned oh so perfectly, and they complimented the vermicelli noodles and greens really well! The greens were fresh and crispy and were a delightful melody of mint leaves, lettuce, red cabbage, peanuts and pickled shredded carrots. The combination was tied together by the sweet vinegar dressing that made the salad just short of amazing! Kibi's also serves Vietnamese sandwiches (Bahn mi). The prices are reasonable and the salad serving was generous! It appears to be a family run establishment. The staff was friendly, courteous and efficient. My salad was prepp'd quickly and I was on my way quickly. There's no indoor seating but they have a relatively large outdoor seating area! Seemingly this spot has been around for awhile? It's a hole-in-the-wall counter with some outside tables outside of this sort of Atrium style mall, aptly named the Atrium. It's super casual, everything is to go boxes, and even if you want some hot sauce/sriracha, it's in the small to-go packets. We both went with the rice noodle plate with chicken and the summer roll with shrimp. It was solid. The rice noodle plate had plenty of chicken, although, I wouldn't say it was super flavorful. The summer rolls were Fresh with a capital F, you could taste the mint and the crunch of the lettuce. The $8 banh mi's looked fantastic, so maybe next time. The ladies running the shop are very nice and they get food out very fast - sub 10 minutes for two sandwiches. No indoor seating, but a really nice shaded patio, surrounded by some bushes for privacy. We kept it simple and ordered 2 Grilled Pork Banh Mi: small, about the size of a soda can but they were dense; the bread was super crunchy, the meat was generous and flavorful; the pate, butter, pickled veggies, and jalapeño added the right balance of umami, salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. Maybe a bit too spicy for me, but the backup cashews and pistachios in my bag saved my tongue. These might be the best banh mi in the area, if you are aiming for quality over quantity. Without a doubt, the best Vietnamese iced coffee in the area - the coffee is so rich and concentrated without being overly bitter, with a cool refreshing sweetness that is perfectly balanced. Perfect for those hot Walnut Creek days! The restaurant is mostly counter service, though they have a few seats out back (in the shade) and online ordering is easy as can be. Despite all the staff furiously working to prepare orders, they are still kind and welcoming when you stop in - a rarity these days in fast casual restaurants. In addition to the amazing iced coffee, the spring rolls are top notch - they must've been made fresh because he rice wrapper is not all dried out or disintegrating where it was in contact with veggies, and all the veggies and herbs are super crisp and fresh as well. Their bahn mi are also amazing - cold cuts with extra jalapeños! Just do it! Bread has a nice thin crisp, but not the kind that destroys the roof of your mouth, and the interior is warm and pillowy. They're not shy with the fillings - the bread to filling ratio is among the lowest of bahn mi I've ever had. I found Kibi's a couple years ago when I was looking for an inexpensive place my husband and I could grab a sandwich for an anniversary lunch. Kibi's did not disappoint! In fact, it has become one of our family's favorite spots. We all joke that we would be happy to eat Kibi's every day if we could, lol! Three out of four of us are vegetarian and LOVE the number 5 and their spring rolls. My husband usually gets the number 3. Both he and my son like to get peanut sauce on the side for their sandwiches. My hubby doesn't usually like peanut sauce but absolutely loves theirs!! Came her during lunch with the boo to grab a bite. It's tucked away, but has a small outdoor covered patio with a few tables to eat. You order inside and wait in the patio area until your number gets called. Lunch time gets pretty busy, so you may need to wait unless you've ordered takeout. Three lovely workers behind the counter are quickly fulfilling orders so please be patient! We ordered the combo, which comes with a 4" banh mi (got the cold cut) and 3 shrimp spring rolls as well as the chicken banh mi. The chicken banh mi was delicious; the chicken was flavorful with slight curry spice. The shrimp spring rolls were also decent, strong in mint flavor, which added a dimension of fresh herb-ness. The cold cut banh mi is always my go-to, and in this sandwich was pretty good in terms of filling to bread ratio. However my only gripe is that the bun was overly toasted and too crunchy. On our first visit, I would have rated kibi's a 4. My pork roll and the honey's bánh mì were tasty. The service was a little confused (mixed our food up with someone else's) but overall it was a nice lunch. The second visit cinched that we wouldn't be back. I ordered the pork rolls again and when we got them back to the house we discovered it wasn't pork, it was chicken, definitely not what I ordered. I decide to just to make the best of it and although I don't love the taste it's when I'm eating it that I encounter the bigger problem - bone. There's a rather large chicken bone in my food - yikes. That's an absolute no-go for me. At the end of the day if I can't trust I'll get what I ordered and I have to worry that it will contain bones, I'm just not interested. I work in Walnut Creek and I've been hunting down a good Vietnamese place to go to for lunch. Kibi's is such a hidden gem, and I absolutely love it here! I've tried their shrimp spring rolls and their grilled pork noodle salad. Their ingredients are always super fresh and, of course, super tasty! The easiest, well thought out and organized system IMO. There was even an area for notes and check boxes for options. My order was made perfectly! Banh mi - (2) #2 grilled pork, (1) #3 lemongrass chicken (no jalapeño, no pate), (1) #2 grilled pork, veggies on the side, (2) cafe Sua da and (1) shrimp spring roll. My lemongrass chicken banh mi was eaten hours later after pick up and tasted oh sooo good. The bread was a bit crunchy on the outside and soft inside that soaked up the juices. It was filled nicely with meat and veggies. Each bite was perfect. My husband ate his #2 veggies on the side for lunch today (food was bought yesterday) He toasted the bare sandwich for a few minutes in the toaster over, added the veggies and BAM!! It tasted just as good as if it was just made. Cafe Sua da was nice and strong. Had to add a splash of half and half just to make it a bit creamier (that's the way I like it.) I adore Kibi's Cafe. Their five spice pork banh mi with extra aioli is my new favorite, and I love their chicken noodle salad. Whichever I'm eating, I always end up inhaling it.
