Prologue Coffee & Tea is a small café operating inside the Walnut Creek Library in downtown (Walnut Creek has two libraries). Although the location is not prominent, pictures of their beautifully crafted drinks and delicious bánh mì sandwiches have been spreading across different social media platforms. So much so that they have been featured in reporting by several local media outlets. Out of curiosity, I decided to check this spot out with my brother and a couple friends on 08/29/2025. It wasn't busy when we walked in at around noon. A quick glance revealed a space that's tiny but well organized. We were greeted by Thuy, the friendly proprietor of the establishment. Since this was our first visit, it took us a while to figure out what we wanted. In the end, we each got a bánh mì sandwich and a beverage. Pricing was reasonable IMHO (see menu pic). I had the cold cut bánh mì and an iced coffee. I gave half of my sandwich to my brother, and he gave me half of his grilled chicken bánh mì in return. Both sandwiches were delicious! The baguette was excellent. It was crispy on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. Thuy told me later on that she gets them from Duc Huong Sandwiches, a famed Vietnamese sandwich chain in San Jose. The homemade pâté, cold cuts, and grilled chicken were all delicious, and the produce was very fresh. The iced coffee was very good as well. We chatted with Thuy extensively before and after our meal. She told us she was a banker prior to opening this café. From our conversation, I could tell she takes pride in her work. We were all very impressed by her demeanor and business acumen. Should you find yourself in downtown Walnut Creek, do yourself a favor and give this place a try. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars. I love that this is located in the library! How cute! There is a parking lot that is free until 10 am which is really convenient. A couple of inside tables and bar top seats. No line on a Saturday morning but I could hear the door dash/takeaway going crazy! I ordered a matcha latte with Ube foam and it was good! A perfect sweetness and neither flavor was overpowering. I visited this café and tried the Banana Cream Matcha. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me. I've had banana cream matchas at other places before, so my expectations were a bit higher. The flavor here tasted somewhat artificial, and I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I had hoped. The bigger issue was the wait. My friend and I were waiting quite a while for our drinks, and we later found out they had run out of ice. I completely understand that these things happen, but it would have been nice if the staff had let us know right away instead of us having to ask. I was craving a good coffee this morning and found this place on DoorDash. Since I saw I was nearby, I ended up deciding to head over to check it out in person instead. The service was great- I believe I met the owner and she was very friendly, bubbly, kind and answered all my questions! Went with the banana milk Vietnamese coffee and the Sakura matcha (swapped with coconut milk) The quality of the Vietnamese coffee is VERY good and I absolutely loved the banana milk coffee! Would get again!!! I enjoyed the Sakura matcha as well. I think my partner did not like the flavor combo of Sakura and coconut milk, but I still thought it was good. A coffee shop attached to a library? I'm in! I stopped by and tried the banana milk coffee along with a cold cut banh mi and both were so good! My daughter ordered an iced caramel macchiato and said it's the best one she's had so far. We were definitely impressed and plan on coming back. The only downside was the wait and how a bit chaotic it felt when walking in. I waited almost 15 minutes for just two drinks. That said, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. One of the best parts was being able to take our drinks into the library, sit down, read our books and enjoy our coffee. Win-win. Reminds me of this place that sold banh mi and boba that I used to study at during my student years. I saw the banh mi advertised and just had to try. They've got an eclectic mix of food and drink items to choose from: some more traditional breakfast items, sandwiches, and some traditional coffeees, and some Asian-inspired drinks as well (ube, matcha, Vietnamese egg coffee, etc.). We've been coming here for over a year and it's just the best. Always happy to support a local business and Thuy the owner is so friendly and sweet. The Vietnamese coffee is strong, sweet and perfect. We've tried all the different bahn mis here and not only is the bread legit soft yet crunchy but the ingredients are fresh and tastes amazing! So glad to have this place in town. I've already been here many times and introduced my friends to it too. This small little coffee shop has a big menu! Tons of drinks to choose from, not to mention their current seasonal menu offerings. I am all about Dubai anything right now, so immediately I knew I wanted to try their Dubai chocolate dalgona coffee. I could tell right off the bat that they use artificial pistachio flavor for the milk portion but I appreciated the real pistachio crumble on top. The eggspresso AKA egg coffee was good, but could have been more egg-y for that custardy feel. They were super friendly here though and service was fast! I like that they are connected to the library, and you can even bring the drinks through the library if you have the lids on. Saw this on TikTok and wanted to give it a try! We tried the Vietnamese coffee, matcha banana drink, and the cold meat bánh mì, and overall I had a great experience! The Vietnamese coffee was really good. It was super strong but not too bitter at all. It also had the perfect level of sweetness. Definitely a standout drink in my opinion. The matcha banana wasn't my personal favorite. It wasn't bad, just not something I'd go out of my way to order again. This was our first time at Prologue. We ordered online for pick up at 1:20. We got our drinks around 1:30 with no issues! We got the Vietnamese iced coffee with a pandan cold foam and the binggrae banana milk coffee. Both drinks were very good we had to slow down so we could enjoy them! I finally had the chance to try Prologue! I had always wanted to try it, and the chance eluded me several times due to my needing to go home for my baby's nap or other parental challenges. Some toxic fumes at my gym, led me to head to the library where my mother-in-law who was visiting was hanging out. When I arrived she was in the cafe! This cafe is located inside the library. Finally, now here's my chance. She took my baby to storytime, and I finally had the chance to enjoy a drink here. The reason I wanted to visit so badly is for its very interesting menu from Coconut Coffee Affogato to Dalgona, there's a wide array of unique drinks! Plus, they have bahn mi on the menu which I want to order next time (with pate! yum). The prices are a bit high here, and they don't match the menu, which is annoying. The menu said $6.45, but it rang up at $7.25, so I don't appreciate that. However, the staff here is fantastic. They are great at explaining the drinks and being friendly about it. I didn't feel rushed (I did step aside to let someone else order) while I browsed, but was met with a smile and more explanations. I wanted a drink that had a dairy-free base, and the staff member was helpful! I ordered the Coconut Coffee Affogato, which was delicious! It's blended with coconut milk to a slushy consistency that I loved! The 16 ounce drink was plenty! I sat at a quiet table to work and thankfully, there were plenty of open tables, so I didn't feel like a bother. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu and pick up a bahn mi! I have been meaning to try Prologue, so I finally had a chance to go. There is only limited free parking in the library lot so you will likely have to park further away if you're looking for free street parking since many of the neighboring blocks charge money for parking or do not allow people to park without a specific permit. There is a screen kiosk where you can order instead of talking to cashier but it's tucked off to the side by the shelves. There are two outdoor tables and free library wifi. You can walk into the library to find single stall bathrooms. We happened to be there right when the owner was getting filmed. I ordered a Hakone charcoal rose coffee, aka their charcoal latte, 16oz with regular milk, and got the vegan banh mi, large, which is 9 inches. I also tried my partner's Vietnamese egg coffee, aka the eggspresso. The charcoal was not too bitter, I was surprised since I thought maybe the charcoal plus coffee would make it taste more bitter and acidic but it was totally fine, even for me as someone who is sensitive to bitter tastes, and I like the floral flavor from the rose. The egg coffee is also pretty sweet. The foam is creamy and has an eggy and dairy flavor. I thought it was also pretty good. Both drinks are quite sweet. I would recommend Prologue if you like flavored drinks. The banh mi is also decent, I like the savory plant based meat though it's almost a bit sour in flavor, and the texture does resemble meat; it tasted like it was soy-based. I like the pickled carrot and radish but it probably could've been more strongly flavored. The jalapeno, especially the seeds, was spicy. But it is not the most flavorful banh mi I've had, although it was still pretty good. The bread is flakey, so just be aware if you're eating somewhere where you don't want to leave crumbs. Overall, I'd say the drinks were more outstanding compared to the food. read more

I've been hearing about Prologue Coffee & Tea in Walnut Creek from my cousin, and I finally got a chance to try it today. My first impression was that I was surprised to see how popular this place given its location inside a public library. So, I had assumed it would be a bit more hidden and lesser known. That definitely wasn't the case, as they had a quite steady flow of customers coming in. Now, as for the drinks, we ordered a few, and here is my review: Eggspresso - Clever name for a Vietnamese-style egg coffee. And because the coffee is Vietnamese, the coffee itself was superb. It was rich, bold, and strong. It was also very sweet--and delicious. The cream on top, which I assume was made with egg yolk (given the name), was also delicious. I would definitely get this again. Dalgona Coffee with Ube - The purple color from the ube was striking and gorgeous. However, I didn't get much of the ube flavor, as it was a bit overpowered by the coffee. Also, the amount of ice they put into this drink was offensively a lot--especially considering the price was $8. I think their "default" ice level should come with significantly less ice. Sakura Matcha - The cherry blossom foam on top was delicious, with a subtle floral note that I really enjoyed. I'm definitely a fan of it. However, the matcha itself could've been stronger. Pandan Coco Latte - While the concept sounded very interesting (and the presentation was absolutely beautiful), unfortunately, the pandan flavor/aroma was completely lost in the coffee. I wasn't very impressed by this one, but I do appreciate the creativity behind it. In general, the drinks were quite decent, though definitely on the pricey side. For some reason, the shop also felt very hot and stuffy on a day like today. Prologue Coffee & Tea is tucked away inside its own wing of the downtown Walnut Creek library. You'd never know this place was there unless you were looking for it or well, if you were at the library! If you're craving a banh mi and expect to roll in on a Sunday (like me many times), that's going to be a problem because the hours of operation are the same as the library. Bonus points for having its own parking lot though for when you have a craving and don't want to be circling downtown Walnut Creek! For a small space, there's a lot of seating! The menu consists of signature drinks with an Asian twist such as Vietnamese coffee, dalgona coffee, banana milk coffee, a pandan coco latte, matchas and more. They also have teas and regular coffee drinks like espresso, pour overs, americanos, macchiatos, mochas, and lattes. Same goes for their food! There's regular cafe food like avocado toast, pastries, sandwiches, breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches and also food with an Asian twist like croffles and the banh mi salad! If you have your little ones who are 4-10 years old and forget to bring their food, fear not! There's food for them here too. They can choose between a hot dog or a PB&J a la carte or they can have a kids meal, which contains a hot dog or a PB&J, a goldfish snack, a juice or Water AND a surprise gift. I ordered the cold cut banh mi with extra meat and a vietnamese yogurt through the electronic stand by the entrance because the counter had a few people. I was able to make other modifications through the electronic stand as well! The food came out so fast. The banh mi was amazing. Bread was slightly toasted and the cold cuts and carrot/ daikon mixture were very authentic. I'd give this a 10/10! The Vietnamese yogurt (which they advertise as a probiotic yogurt) is something I was very surprised to see because it's usually only at the shops in chinatowns. If you know, you know. I definitely knew what was up and I just HAD to order one! The yogurt tasted great - just like the ones my parents made at home for me as a child. For $2.95 for a smaller container it did come off as pricey to me but oh boy, was my craving for Vietnamese yogurt satisfied! I wished that there was more! If you're looking for great tasting authentic banh mis and Asian inspired coffee drinks in Walnut Creek, look no further than Prologue! Made the trip worth it by going to story time in the library, 10/10 recommend! I placed the order on the kiosk because the line was long. I gave my number for a notification, but never got one. When we got there after sotey time, my order was ready. The salmon toast didn't look like the picture. It was pretty basic for almost $14. The coffee was good, but only got the banana flavor at the bottom. Maybe I should have stirred it. The staff are friendly. I'd like to taste their other coffees as they're Asian inspired and I don't see their items in any regular coffee shop. Probably won't get their toast again, though haha. read more

Loved loved loved this Cafe! Located inside the library. This line does get pretty long making the wait time long but it is well worth the wait and you can visit the book store while you are waiting. I got the banana latte which is a must try if you love banana. We also tried the charcoal rose latte which was unique and also delicious! The only thing we didn't really care for was the burrito. The tortilla was stiff and it was lacking some flavor. The avocado toast however was very good. I will most definitely be coming back and look forward to trying their matcha. Quaint little restaurant inside the Walnut Creek downtown library. They have a variety of drinks, snacks and food. I read about the location and decided to give them a try. I ordered the Cold Meat Combo Banh Mi sandwich. I ordered the regular size. If you have a good appetite I would recommend going with the large. I ordered a small and it is a true size small. The bread is toasted so eat the sandwich there if you want the light crunch, soft roll and warm sandwich. The produce is fresh with carrots, cilantro, zucchini, peppers and more. Cold Combo is good with all of the produce. I didn't get anything to drink or snack but I noticed they have a good variety and some anime merchandise. I was honestly so excited to try their apple yuzu matcha since i havent found a place that serves anything like that. Unfortunately both the matchas we found very underwhelming, there were no matcha taste present. My partner and I found the matchas very diluted/watered down. The banana cream matcha i would say was far better compared to the apple yuzu. The banana cream matcha tasted like watery banana milk while the apple yuzu taste like milk with some 'yuzu peel chunks.' We also went ahead and grabbed the large bahn mi priced at around 11 dollar which i thought was relatively reasonable priced and decent. This small cafe is located in the Walnut Creek library with a parking lot next to it. Parking is metered so you will have to pay, but if you're only here to grab a drink it's only 50 cents to park for 30 minutes. The inside is small and cozy with very limited seating. There's a self-order kiosk as well as a barista taking orders. The service was very kind and the drinks came out shortly. Vietnamese Iced Coffee with Banana Milk 9/10 - Loved this coffee, got the high caffeine from the coffee but with a nice touch of sweetness from the banana milk. This coffee and tea spot was quite memorable because I got stuck behind someone who quite literally took almost five minutes to order a single sandwich. The barista kept going back and forth, asking her question after question as to what she wanted, what it needed to have, etc...it very much seemed like a situation that could've been solved with a little paper card where you check off all of your sandwich choices like they do in a deli market. After waiting so long I was debating putting back my drink she finally paid and in roughly 20 seconds, I was able purchase my single soda. I'm often at Marys in Growers Square down the way which is also a small business sandwich shop and in all my visits I have never had to spend that much time ordering or checking out. This was my first time here. I love how it is connected to the library because parking it much easier. It is your typical cute coffee shop, there are plenty of seating with people working on their computers or chatting with their family. When you walk in there a self ordering kiosk for ordering. Prologue checks both boxes. They have super tasty Vietnamese-Korean fusion banh mi sandwiches that are VEGAN. Who would've thought I'd ever find this combo, but they've got it, and it's fire. Prologue's drink lineup is also well worth checking out with options like their seasonal speciality, a delicate floral/fruity sakura matcha latte, and their signature pandan coco latte. The best part is that Prologue is located inside the local library, which makes for the perfect environment to grab a snack and drink and do a bit of work. Like seriously, this set-up is genius. I absolutely love this coffee shop! The service and quality here are consistently amazing, and it's honestly one of my favorite spots to relax. I always enjoy chatting with the owner--she's incredibly sweet and makes the whole experience feel so welcoming and personal. They also have such creative (and delicious!) drinks on the menu. Today I tried a charcoal matcha with strawberry cold foam, and it was just as unique as it sounds--in the best way possible. This cafe is practically inside the library, very cute inside, small but cozy with a good amount of seating inside and out. I got the matcha latte which was just okay very milky, a good sweetness to it, but the matcha was overall lost in the milk. The saltado coffee was also just okay, coffee was not too strong there wasn't enough salt foam in my opinion and it wasn't sweetened at all. I didn't like the drinks I got this time but I may come back to try other items like the dalgona coffee. Their drinks look good so I'm hopeful. read more
