Second visit to Pho Benny, a nice local Viet spot. Large pay lot in back was a better option than the Trader Joe's hit and run lot across the street. We came in early and sat ourselves. Friendly greeting as we entered. Daughter loves crispy egg rolls and fresh shrimp rolls so we started with those dishes. Both apps were awesome! Nice and crispy with a tasty filling for the egg rolls. I ordered the Pho #1 and my daughter got the grilled pork rice plate. Good sized servings that came out quickly. Pho broth was rich and flavorful. Lots of beef and rice noodles... the beef was tender. We had two sodas which are served in large metal tumblers. Refills included . I drive by this weekly going to and from Trader Joe's and decided to stop in. When I entered the restaurant there was no host and I stood there for several minutes unsure if I was supposed to wait or be seated. Finally, someone came by and seated me. Ambiance was as expected and there was both table and bar seating. Space was open and quite nice. The menu is fairly standard for a pho restaurant including some beer and wine. i ordered the beef pho which came with typical accoutrements of basil, lime, bean sprouts, etc. The portion was good and meat was medium rare. Unfortunately the broth - the most important flavor component for me - was underwhelming. There wasn't much flavor and it tasted watered down. So I had to compensate with added salt, spice and other. It tasted very watered down. I'll probably try it again but on this visit alone, I give it three stars. read more

The waitress brought out a side of rare steak after I showed her the order which consisted of 6 thin slices of beef and cost $5. I was pleasantly surprised that the bread was relatively soft and the fillings had a good amount of sauce to it, meaning the sandwich wasn't dry. Got the crispy egg rolls, pork banh mi and the chicken chow mein. The egg rolls and banh mi were delicious!! The chow mein wasn't what I was expecting, the noodles are thin and you definitely have to add some extra sauce on it, but they have lots available! Once I got my spicy/sweet sauce ratio down I really enjoyed the noodles! The staff were super nice! I felt bad since we came in before they were actually open to get lunch for my coworkers but they were so nice and didn't mind. I have no idea how this place is a 4.4 stars. I ordered the rice plate with chicken and prawns and spring rolls. The veggies were literally cold like someone forgot to turn on the microwave past 30 seconds. At least they were crispy. The rice was lukewarm, which was hard to mess up. The chicken was OK but again just warm and the shrimp was rubbery. We tried to drink a small bowl of soup that came with it, but neither of us could actually get it down because it was so salty. It tasted like someone spilled half of a salt container into it. Which is incredibly disappointed given that PHO is the real reason I love Vietnamese food. My wife got the BUN, which was marginally better at least edible although a bit on the greasy side. This probably doesn't even deserve the two stars. I'm giving it. Restaurant is weird because there was a radio playing Mexican music than Christmas music playing over the speakers Nickelodeon on one of the screens and some strange Christmas display on the other screen. I had thought to try out this place. Since it had a high star rating. It was recommended by other yelpers. But I have to say, that my experience was OK. I came to this location, three weeks back last month. Had it saved to my clipboard collections. Long story short I usually go to the pho place right by my location in Walnut Creek. But thought to try a new location. Since the last time I found, a baby live roach in my food at Pho Lee Hoe Phat 1, back in 2018. This was a little drive out and I was craving a good pho place for the weather. The service is OK, I thought it was strange how I got my soda served in. What looks like to be someone's used coffee mug. Anyways I try to look at it as a positive that it kept my soda more cold. The restaurant is ice cold, I literally froze my ass off, the pho soup kept me warm. But the food is good, our server was nice. I think the next time around I'll probably order takeout. And I don't like how they have a table almost right next to the bathroom. It's a major turn off, for this I have to give the restaurant two stars. The restaurant inside can use some work, like maintenance. A few picture frames that are not totally secured on the wall. It's a little rundown. I had the Vietnamese chow mein with chicken and shrimp. I've never had this dish before. Unlike a Chinese restaurant chow mein is typically oily but not here. The Vietnamese style more of a broth and not greasy. It's not served in a bowl with broth but on a plate where you can see evidence that broth was used in preparation. There are plenty of vegetables. I would consider it healthier than Chinese counterpart. I love Chinese chow mein but this is a healthier alternative. Haven't been to Pho Benny in a long time. Went in today. Was barely greeted. Sat ourselves. Waitress took the order and dropped the food. Never asked if we needed anything or checked back. Saw her mostly on he cell phone in a side hallway. Other tables were getting up and going to the counter for their bills. Mexican music was blasting from the kitchen. When we were the last ones there, a young man just looked at us, and didn't ask if we needed anything. I finally asked loudly if anyone actually worked here. The kid nodded. I asked for our bill. He brought it over. He had added an appetizer we didn't order or eat for $15. I checked the menu and found they were charging more than the menu quoted as the price. Just move here. Came in with the kids yesterday, Friday. This is our fifth time. Always nice to see the waitress that greets us. She's very thorough and recommend what to order based on what we were craving. We got portion of our order and then I went to ask the waitress something near the checkout station. Mexican music was blasting and I saw the girl in the kitchen making my beef rice plate (mind you there's a gap between the appliances looking into the kitchen). Which was handed to the waitress unnoticed that the girl working in the kitchen ate a piece of my meat. I've been here five times. I don't know how many times she has done that to me alone let alone other customers. That is very disgusting. We did not touch the plate that was given to us. I did not make a scene, I just want people to know. It is not okay for her do to that at all. This is something the health department should be notified, but I don't have time for that. Very good Pho! Good food, very nice service, and comfy warm ambience. We ordered the classic #1 Combination beef pho and the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and both dishes did not disappoint. The noodle soup bowls came out pipping hot, meat were fresh, soup tasted clear, fresh and full of flavors, and the noodles were fresh and not clumpy. Thumbs up! In particular, the soup stayed hot throughout the meal - this may sound easy but this is not simple at all! Too many times pho soup bowls would come out lukewarm, then almost cold by the time you finish. Spicy beef noodle soup was flavorful, spicy and on point. Came here again and this time tried there brisket pho with added tripe and veggies, and it was absolutely amazing. The tripe was so light fluffy and fresh, the brisket was 10 out of 10. It was but we had to go inside every time we needed something. I could be wrong, but I didn't think this was a counter service establishment. Pho was served medium warm. Like the cook could not be bothered to heat the pho properly. Order an appetizer of fried chicken wings. For some reason they arrived late after I finished the lukewarm pho despite asking for them twice. No excuse given despite there were only 4 other diners in the restaurant. What arrived was a sad plate of 6 wings consisting of just the web portion of the wing. My recommendation is to drive the extra miles to Kevin's pho in WC. read more
