I had a really upsetting experience ordering from here through Uber Eats. I ordered wonton soup and chow fun, and had my partner pick it up on his way home. As I was serving the soup, I noticed something unusual. When I picked it out and placed it on the counter, it was clearly a yellow worm. Completely shocked, I contacted Uber Eats customer service. They only offered a refund for the soup, not the chow fun, because the issue wasn't visible in that item. But honestly, how am I supposed to feel comfortable eating anything else from the same order after finding a worm in one dish? I then called the restaurant to report what happened, and instead of addressing the seriousness of the issue, the manager asked what we wanted them to do and even offered free food. That response was disappointing and didn't feel appropriate given the situation. It's unfortunate because we've ordered from here before and the food was good, but after this experience, we couldn't bring ourselves to eat the rest of the meal. My coworkers raved about Peony Garden which led me to trying this restaurant and what I can say is that they overhyped it. The food is decent and by all means it actually has flavor that tastes like authentic Chinese food. I felt the prices for the area were fair, given it's located at a more affluent location and the restaurant itself has a very cultural aesthetic and overall welcoming atmosphere when seated. What I didn't appreciate however was the nonexistent service. This was my first time ordering food at this business for takeout and I felt that couldn't have been treated as more of an after thought. My order was over $50 but that didn't seem to matter when in comparison to other patrons who were dressed more business professional despite me arriving there in uniform and with attire that was representative of the company I am employed at. Even more, staff is known to receive better treatment from this business when it is known so I have no idea what made me an outlier. I found it annoying that the employee who served me made sure that the customer ahead was given 5 star service offering fortune cookies, sauces and other amenities when I was only offered two forks. She gave them gratitude but with me was passive and dismissive. While I wasn't pleased at all with the quality of service, I can't state that I was content with my meal. The quality of food tasted better than most Chinese restaurants located in affluent areas and the prices were definitely fair. While I'll probably never eat there again, the service gets a 1.5/5, the food, a 3/5. read more

I ordered from Uber Eats/doordash a few times now, the chow mein is good with nice noodles and flavor. Don't love the dim sum - got the shu mai and the steamed pork buns. The pork buns are very small (probably the smallest I've seen) and are just fine. Shu Mai is also just fine. It's not bad but I definitely think there is better dim sum in Walnut Creek/east bay. Pricing is pretty standard for the area (around $15 for chow mein and $8-9 for dim sum dishes). Can't comment on service or ambiance since I have only gotten it to go! read more

I was in search of a good fried rice ,chow mein and something salt and pepper fried in the diablo area. My co worker raved about this place so I had to try it. I was so disappointed. I was such a spacious well designed restaurant. In the summer time I'm sure it's delightful. The staff was nice, but not attentive. They are doing so many things at once. Greeting, answering the phone, seating people, answering questions from staff. It was a lot going on, I now see why my order was wrong. The rice has the frozen mixed vegetables in it and I didn't get to try the chow mein because they made it a rice instead so 2 disappointing rices went to waste. The salt and pepper chicken wings were blah. But I will say I feel like the salt and pepper fish was 7/10 I think it would have been better if I had eaten it there. Yes, I should call out that I got the food to go. Not sure if they forgot who I was but I waited forever at the bar and when I finally had some sense to go ask how much longer it look like it had been sitting at the counter for a while. Went here after a quick search for Asian food in the area. Not really "good" in my opinion and here's why: PROS: - Easy to find location on a main road - Parking to the side/back of the restaurant - Nice decor, lots of seating (no pics, I meant to but forgot!) - Good, quick servers... not chatty but pleasant(ish) - Good portion sizes CONS - There was an odd/musty/foul smell in the front foyer of the restaurant that was still there when we left about an hour later - Food taste of the main dishes were quite bland and underwhelming (except for the app!) - Stingy on the prawns in the (Kung Pao Prawns). The beef dish had a proper protein ratio, but was also bland tasting. All in all, although the appetizer was good there was nothing that really impressed us about this dinner. It was surprisingly and disappointingly "mid" on the things that matter to me most. As such, for now, it's not high up on my list of places to revisit. read more

Walnut Creek says suburbia to me. I've never lived here, but every time I come here, it feels like the type of town I grew up in on the peninsula... shopping centers, parking lots, more shopping centers, more parking lots. Despite the temptations of dim sum and wonton soup noodles, I gravitated to the $13 Oriental Chicken Salad. Bingo! That was exactly what I wanted even though I have a personal bias against any dish referred to as 'Oriental'. C'mon, it ain't a rug. I have been here many times over the years. Sadly, it has gone from being mildly upscale to mildly shabby. Badly needs some TLC to improve the ambiance. From the entryway to the bathroom door. It is time to get rid of the large high table (never seen used) in the middle of the room and replace with smaller tables. Six of us made a reservation for lunch. They had reserved the first table right next to the entrance for us. The worst possible location. Fortunately, the round table right next to it opened up after 10-15' and we moved there. We shared some beers and we all ordered different lunch specials. They ran out of brown rice. Fried rice is $3 extra! The portions were generous for the price ($14.95-15.95) and included soup, spring roll, rice and extensive options for protein. The food was positively tasty but there was zero effort to enhance the plating. Not sure what's going on, but we would gladly pay a couple of bucks more to get back to the ambiance of its early years. read more

I was looking for a restaurant to take my mom out for her birthday. She really doesn't like restaurants, so I had to find the right one. She likes small, shared plates and she likes Asian food. I thought dim sum would be appropriate. I was delighted when this restaurant was suggested to me as I wanted a restaurant that had a nice ambiance as well. The outdoor back patio here is lovely! There's a fountain, and the restaurant also sits above the creek. In their back patio, you're surrounded by trees, and you kind of forget that you're near downtown Walnut Creek. The outdoor dining here is a treat. The small plates were also exactly what we were looking for. We got an array to share, and then we ordered two main dishes after we were through with the dim sum. My mom picked out an eggplant dish that was the star of the meal. Every since then, we regularly try to order eggplant at Chinese restaurants, but no one has done it as well Peony Garden. We've gotta go back for that. Although, we've only been here the one time, we still talk about it a lot. Food is good! Service is attentive! Ambiance is a little toned down. It's not what you think a Chinese restaurant is. Yes, food is great and so is the service, but this place is a bit more "intimate" as the lighting is a bit dark. I'd say go here if you are on a date and want to whisper to your partner the little intricacies of your life. Not a great place for a loud Chinese family to go, especially with kids who are loud. Overall a great place to eat, just not appropriate for the loud boisterous groups. We'll do takeout next time as the Fukkian fried rice and chow ho fun was a hit. read more

They serve a small choice of dim sum everyday which I love (they do full dim-sum service on weekends I believe) and the food is always amazing. No complaints about the food. Ive been coming here for years, mostly for take-out with no issues. I usually find their menu through Yelp and access the menu from there. This time my online cart activated a program that asked for my credit card information, but then it didn't charge for the order. Confused, I thought I would just pay in the Restaurant when i arrived. Why take my credit info then, i thought. It was hard to find my order because the worker told me i had ordered from the "Chinese Menu", and the email receipt i was sent had only an "order number", which I found out the restaurant doesn't use that number to track orders causing a bit of confusion. The staff told me they have always used this digital service, so i suppose it is possible i accessed the menu in some slightly different way without realizing. When processing the payment, the person helping me ask for my pin number instead of passing me a portable pad. I told them I wasn't comfortable speaking/sharing my pin number and the transaction timed out. I paid again with my credit card but this time i insisted I step behind the kiosk and type in the numbers myself so I wasn't sharing it verbally. It may be that I was dealing with an employee who was inexperienced, but it was a completely unlike every other visit I've had to this restaurant. I'm probably not coming back because I am suspicious of The digital online interface their menu uses and I definitely urge anyone that is asked, to not share your pin number whether it is a well-intentioned request or not.. read more

Went to Peony Garden in between feedings of my newborn daughter. Customer service was abrupt and sub-par. We received no serving utensils or napkins for a to-go order. The Front desk person was inflexible in letting me order the duck lettuce wraps, even though it was listed as a special in the lobby. She then went on to tell me that they had duck, but it could not be sold as a wrap. When we ordered the prawn wraps, they gave us a delicious dish of prawns stir fried with veggies, and a head of lettuce that could have easily been given the same way along with the duck that the receptionist admitted was for sale. The inflexibility of this restaurant was annoying. Overall the meal was delicious, and the experience in getting the meal was aggravating. Great Dine In Experience and Great To Go as well with FREE PARKING lot in WC!!! Peony Garden is, by far, the Best Chinese Food around I have found - a great dining experience. It has an awesome patio off the main dining area overlooking Walnut Creek (the actual creek!). Extremely convenient to get to from downtown and less than a mile from the South Main/680 off/on ramp (right across from Kaiser on South Main Street). It is spotless inside with superb dishes and service. Their weekday Lunch Special is fantastic! If there is better Chinese Food dining experience around here, let me know. I love Peony Garden. The food is absolutely amazing. The owner, Cynthia, is very accommodating and sweet. She always shows me to a lovely table on their beautiful back patio where my friends and I start with a cocktail ( I like the lemon drop best so far) and a couple of appetizers.
