This had been our favorite place for crab legs, and we go every couple of months. The all- you-can eat Saturday night special was well worth the price, and you can combo the crab with their delicious ribs if you want. We just went and were very disappointed to encounter a strong fragrance and taste of seasoning (dare it be the cliche' Old Bay) accompanying every bite and hijacking the delicate taste of the crab. The extremely nice and attentive server checked with the kitchen to see if they could cook ours in water without it, and came back to tell us the cook said this is no different than it's always been. Ain't so, or now they have ramped up the amount they use. Translation--no, just be quiet and eat it We made the best of it for sure, and I got sick of the seasoning before I got sick of the crab. I'm sure the other menu items are as tasty as they look, but we come for the crab. So, sadly, this place is off our list now. read more

Kief's reef is still one of my favorite bar/restaurants along the fox river. They have limited parking space which can sometimes be difficult with how crowded they get. They used to have all you could eat crab legs which I went to almost every week. They have since stopped doing that and now you are given a direct weight. Which is why I'm only giving them four stars. i understand the economy isn't easy on anyone. But that was the main reason I loved Kief's reef so much. While I don't go as much, they still provide great food, service, and the environment is alive but not too crazy. read more

Great local joint, right on the Fox River. Biker friendly, so visit on 2 wheels if you can. Lots of drink specials, and friendly bartenders/waitresses. Food was typeical bar food, good but not great. Great food & atmosphere. Really love the all you can eat crab legs (& ribs) on Saturday's. Great entertainment during the summer at the outdoor Tiki Bar. With a sand pit for beach volleyball! We started with a blood mary and vodka cranberry, our server/bartender on Sunday morning was awesome. Bloody Mary was extra spicey and made well. We then ordered cheddar cubes and they were phenomenal. Since it was st.pattys we had some corned beef cabbage, which was decent but nothing to get excited about. Went here at 6:00 with a party of 9 on a Saturday. Called to ask if they take reservations and they don't but they took my name anyway. They had a table waiting for us when we arrived even though they "don't take reservations." We ordered a pizza, AUCE crab legs,ribs and prime rib. Everything was amazing! My only complaint was the time it took to get the meal started. We sat for over 45 mins before any food was served. We were told it was the pizza that was holding up the order. But the food was well worth the wait, and at a great price. Our waitress did a great job keeping our plates full of ribs and crab legs . The salad bar was a little small with not much to offer except lettuce, carrots, cucumbers ,peas, tomatoes and a few side dishes like cottage cheese, beets, potato and macaroni salad. We've eaten here a number of times, always had great burgers and wings. Went for dinner on 8/30. 1/2 price wings were mediocre at best. Ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich also. Onion strings were stale, chicken was dry. Blue cheese was strangely bitter. The wait staff was great as always! read more

Great fish fry - try the walleye or the smelt - both awesome. This is my wife's favorite friday night spot - a Wisconsin fish fry or supper club in Illinois - casual and noisy, inexpensive beers and great food. Went last night (Wednesday) for the all you can eat lake perch. Discovered that they also feature all you can eat fried or steamed shrimp. Our table happened to order one of each, and we each sampled the other plates. It was all very good, and even though a bit pricy, the servings are generous, and our waitress kept the refills coming. Sides were very good too. We have been here a lot, and I have never had a bad dish. For a bar that serves food, it does a very good job. It isn't fancy, but it is good. read more

Saw a couple of bad reviews and have no clue where they ate. We have always had great service. The food is a notch above normal places like this. It my not be fantastic but it is very good. My husband and I have been here a few times and food and service has been very good. Waitresses are attentive and friendly. Sat at the bar once for lunch and the bartender was great. My only complaint is that the music is pretty loud. Tough to have a conversation when it is busy. That won't keep us away though. read more

The only reason we used to go here was for the all-you-can eat crab. Crab was great, so was the service but not enough to compensate for the atmosphere. It got downright rowdy and too loud for my taste with a bunch of drunk, obnoxious people. Maybe I'm just getting old but the bar takes away from anything good about this place. read more

New to the area and read the reviews. This was our first time here looking for the fish fry that was advertised. Started off great, bartender was attentive and drinks were served right away.... That's where the good service ended. Never heard a word again from the bartender. He was to busy running around. One drink in 45 minutes. Never asked if we wanted to see menus, hear specials, nothing. People next to us ordered a pizza which looked good, but they packed up their personal items and left 3/4 of the pie sitting there. Asked if there was something wrong with it and was told that they waited 25 minutes for a drink refill and gave up. It's a shame cause it looked like a great place, we never got to experience anything beyond one drink. Hire more staff and they might keep the crowd....will try again maybe in a few months....to many other choices in the area that would glad to take my money. read more

I'm going to give them a solid 4 stars. Almost everything has been good. A couple of average items, but nothing bad. We had the all you can eat crab on Saturday. After the first plate the crab and butter was a little colder. Cold crab and butter just aren't as good. I did have 3 helpings and they offered more. A true no guilt all u can eat! We are new to the area and were searching for a good fish fry. We had read good reviews about Kief's Reef but were disappointed. The salad bar was good and the waitress was very attentive but the fish was poor. First, it was served on undersized plates that made it difficult to cut your fish without your potatoes spilling onto the table. The quality of the fish was variable - parts of it were dry and it was all heavily battered and cooked too crisp. Maybe it was a bad night but we won't be going back. read more

We stopped a busboy, he said he would send someone over immediately, and waited another ten minutes, then we left. Great tacos on Tuesdays! The pizza is one of the best and they have half price pizza on Mondays! The beer is ice cold and priced just right. Just went here for the first time last week; I was greeted by the bartender, Brian immediately with a smile. I told him I had never been here before and had read on yelp about their Cuban Sandwich (they are hard to find in Mchenry County!). He took my order immediately and after getting to the kitchen asked if I would like a drink; bring a hot day, I asked for ice water which I had in less than a minute. He took care of another customer and greeted other customers arriving and was back to let me know all about the place. He was friendly while he explained the main bar, the tiki bar and the bar on the water where they have live music every weekend. He said it was a quite place to eat & drink except on weekends when it can get loud & crowded. He went to get a to go menu for me to take with and found out they don't have any more... so he explained the full menu & the weekly specials. He was patient while I asked questions which he answered fully. I ordered the Cubano Sandwich with coleslaw & their homemade chips; the sandwich was fabulous, coleslaw good and the chips were Delicious... who knew homemade chips were that wonderful? Me now! We ordered pick up from here last night actually - I got a burger and my husband got a pizza. He went to go pick up and they said that the pizza accidentally was given to someone else, but not to worry that person was on their way back with it now. Not normal to have your pizza leave with someone else and them to expect that you'd still want it, at this point, no longer hot, and in someone else's hands. They didn't offer up a discount or anything. My burger was actually pretty tasty, but needless to say we won't be eating here again. read more

Do I even have to give one star? I'm leaving now, after dealing with such rude service. There was three of us who were looking for a new bar to entertain us, and this is definitely NOT the place. Brian was so rude, I'm pretty sure he was hammered while serving us, which was annoying in itself. We kept to ourselves, played darts and the slots and did not cause a ruckus. Bad characteristics at this bar. Keep an eye on your stuff unless you want it stolen from you. As far as Half price pizza thats a laugh. Plan on spending money for a full size pizza because your forced to buy 3 toppings,. So if you tip plan on spending 17.50 for a drink and a large pizza thats not so good. read more
