I really wouldn't call this place a Japanese restaurant, but rather a Japanese-Chinese fusion restaurant. If you go in with tempered expectations, you may have a better experience than I did going in assuming this was standard Japanese fare. We went with the black garlic ramen (spicy), the lamb, beef, and black pork skewers (three skewers each), potato skewers, green onion skewers, tuna nigiri, tamago nigiri, chicken karaage, and gyoza. The skewers all tasted the same due to the HEAVY amount of dry seasoning rubbed onto every skewer, which is the same spice rub regardless of the meat. The layer of spice is so thick that it falls off everywhere as you're eating it. They also used the same spice mix on the potatoes and in the ramen, making the entire meal incredibly one note in terms of flavor profile. The flavors also clashed with the garlic ramen. The spices tasted like what I've had before in the broth at malatang restaurants and was a poor match for Japanese food. The chicken karaage was actually super delicious, but was more like popcorn chicken than karaage. It was also served with honey mustard, which made it feel like a different dish entirely. The gyoza were fine, nothing to write home about, and the sushi was good. The tuna was fresh and the tamago had a bit of caramelization going on, which was different than other examples I've had of it and I liked it. If you ignore for a moment that you're in a Japanese restaurant and came for Japanese food, you might have a good time here. The meat skewers were cooked perfectly and delicious, the ramen was prepared very well (and pretty generous in size), and the fish was fresh. But the one-note Chinese flavors took me out of this meal entirely and it ultimately fell flat for me, though my husband really enjoyed his meal. While I'm not keen on returning, it at least made a fan out of him. Important thing to note about the menu, specifically the skewers: be careful about the pricing. The wording on the menu is, frankly, nonsensical, but what it's trying to say is that the skewers are one price if you order less than a particular number of them, and a different price if you order more than a certain number of them. We didn't figure this out until after we'd already placed our order and they'd started grilling the meat, but we ended up with a slightly bigger bill than we intended. We of course didn't argue -- as Judge Judy always says, we ate the steak -- but the vague, terrible language of that part of the menu left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended).
Could be better Skewers tasted all The same but it was fully cooked so that's good. Sushi presentation was done very well But flavor was lacking it just didn't hit the same or better as other sushi spots. Also had a lot of flys buzzing around
Dinner tonight with our family. This is her favorite Japanese Restaurant. I believe the owners have changed as they have a new sign and a new menu. Inside has also been altered. The screen near the bathroom has been taken. Outside they have installed fake sod and a tent. Today I ordered the garlic ramen. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. I found the pork belly tough. It should just melt in your mouth. I enjoyed the garlic cloves that were toasted. There were around 5 of them. They were soft and very garlicky. I really enjoyed them. The soft boiled egg was cut in half, so it was a different experience. In stead of cutting it open and letting the yoke melt into the broth it was more cooked and stuck to its self. I enjoyed the bamboo shoots, corn, and bean sprouts in the broth. I found the broth extremely tasty and enjoyed every slurp. The noodles were a little on the mushy side. There were 3 of us. We ordered a bento box, mixed tempura, and 8 piece sashimi My favorite part of the mixed tempura was the pumpkin and onion ring. I love the flavor and texture of the pumpkin and the crispness of the onion ring and sweet onion. I tried the salmon out of the bento box wasn't that great. It was dry and didn't taste fresh. The salad with miso dressing that comes with the bento box was really good and fresh. The sashimi was good and fresh. I had the salmon and really enjoyed it. If you are wondering they also serve white wine.
We came here for a birthday dinner for our son-in-law so I reserved a table on Yelp for 4 people. No problem if you come early as we found parking in the lot. Since it was a birthday celebration we ordered agedashi tofu, gyoza, chirashi sushi, sake don, salmon lover roll, unagi hand roll, salmon skin hand roll, 2 - three item bento boxes (one with salmon teriyaki, chicken teriyaki and short ribs and the other with salmon teriyaki, sashimi and beef teriyaki. The service was attentive and everything was tasty and fresh. I enjoyed my salmon skin hand roll, my 3 item bento box with salmon teriyaki, 4 piece sashimi (2 tuna 2 salmon) and beef teriyaki. The sashimi was fresh and tender, however the beef was alittle chewy and not as tender as I expected. The complimentary birthday dessert was a tasty treat and we all shared. This place is a go to for my daughter and son-in-law and they picked this place. My first time here and it was enjoyable, with good service and good food.
Kigawa is a great hidden gem. Well maybe not so hidden because it was busy, but we got a table for 5 without waiting. The fish was excellent. We loved the Hamachi carpaccio. The sashimi was so fresh and flavorful. Service was great too.
5 stars. This is about to be my new go-to spot. Kigawa Bistro really surprised me in the best way. The food was genuinely delicious and the value is hard to beat. Even the salad (the standard bento salad) stood out -- the dressing tasted extra refreshing, maybe from shredded carrots and a hint of ginger blended in. The miso soup also had deeper umami and a subtle sea flavor that made it feel more elevated than typical miso. I ordered a $24 dinner bento and they let me get double sashimi at no extra charge, which was such a nice surprise. The short ribs were an additional charge but absolutely worth it -- tender and super flavorful. Everything came out quickly. What really makes this place special though: * Open late (they recently extended sushi hours until midnight) * Sushi deals after 9pm * $15 all-you-can-drink * Super cute, Instagrammable decor There's a "Hey Crush!" hot air balloon decoration, covered outdoor seating, and a flower wall with fairy lights. Inside is just as cute. Manager Kina was so sweet and even took candid photos of our table. Great taste, great prices, late hours, fun vibe. Honestly just an awesome experience.
Hubby's birthday and was craving Japanese. We were doing errands first then stopped at Nike outlet just looking for his running shoes...I brought him here at this restaurant and chose it because of the reviews.... Not realizing it was the place next to the massage salon we went to a couple times I think we just ordered togo from Kigawa twice after our massage. Haven't been here for like couple of years now since we moved to a new place. I am not sure if I did write a review around that time we came here. Anyways, it's a cute place and clean. I love their service - quick and staff were pleasant and the restroom is clean.l love their decor cute and simple. Total of $80 for the 2 of us. Including tip of $15. 2 orders of 2 item lunch bento and an order of hamachi kama, a soda and a hot tea. To be honest, I like giving out reviews so I could help small local businesses in our area. I love their salad and dressing. Sashimi is fresh. Agedashi tofu good.Tempura good. Im just giving 3.5 due to hamachi(small and bland for $15?) Even the sauce is lacking of something? Their chicken teriyaki could be improved. I will still come back though to try their Omakase and other stuff so I might be able to up the stars next time
OPEN LATE! Bring your early or late night appetite and family/friends. I've been dining and taking out here for years. A small sushi shack off the busy Marina Blvd with limited parking. Menu features traditional sushi items, skewers, nigiri, sashimi, ramen, udon, etc. They have drinks, sake, beer, alcohol, tea. Small Indoor or outdoor dining is offered. Check this place out!
Cute small spot. We came here because we thought it was AYCE sushi. But it is NOT AYCE sushi. The lady came and took the order. Was sweet. The bento box was good. The katsu sauce was runny and although it had flavor it was just very very thin. And the udon took a REALLY long time. We were almost done with our food when my sister got her order. Not sure if we'd come back but the food was good. It had flavor.
We came here for lunch and we were the 1st people. The place is really nice and clean. The decor is nice! Plenty of parking. Now for the food. I ordered chirashi Don which is my to go order when I go to a sushi place. This sushi was place on ice and the side of rice is warm, which I loved. But the fish is kinda thin and small compare to other sushi place I been too. My son had a bento box with teriyaki chicken and California rolls (his favorite). Unfortunately, the rice vinegar is too strong in the California rolls, he only ate 2 pieces out of 8. The chicken is delicious though. My husband, seafood rolls is actually really interesting but delicious. We might come back to try a different dish though, we shall see.

We stopped by Kigawa Bistro in San Leandro for sushi, and it was a great choice. I ordered the Salmon Lover and really enjoyed it! The sushi was fresh, and although it had a bit of spice, it was totally tolerable--even for someone who doesn't usually go for spicy food. This was actually my first time trying raw sushi, and I was surprised by how enjoyable it was. I also tried the salmon belly, which was super flavorful. It came topped with wasabi that was a little intense for me, so I removed some of it--but then added a bit to my Salmon Lover, and it balanced out nicely. What really stood out was the service. Our waitress was incredibly kind and even brought me a miso soup on the house. That thoughtful gesture made the experience even better--and the soup itself was rich and full of flavor. I definitely recommend giving Kigawa a try and seeing for yourself. It was a great first-time sushi experience!
Honestly, we had decent service and food was tasty; however, I looked at other tables and the tables were occupied for a protracted amount of time due to only one server during dinner time and orders were slow to get to their tables. Two sushi chefs who I'm not sure speak any English were not very helpful when I approached them for assistance while the server was in the kitchen prepping bento boxes. Honestly can't blame the server as she assisted us whenever we waved her down, but she definitely needed HELP. The four of us shared a dinner bento of Kalbi, Chicken Katsu, and Tempura. It was very good with two nicely done strips of Kalbi, tempura that was crisp and hot, and one of the better Chicken Katsus that we've had in a long time. We also ordered a Sushi/Sashimi/Roll platter that consisted of 9 pieces of chefs' choice nigiri, 15 slices of five kinds of fish (salmon, maguro, albacore, toro, Haimachi) and three rolls. We thought it was a good deal and the fish was fresh. Maybe our timing was right as we got there before most of the crowd and ordered quickly. Oh well, get some help as the food is good.

Our 19th hole after a round of golf at Metro was here. We arrived at 1pm Tuesday. Party of four. There was one other party wrapping up their lunch. The menu is extensive. Several laminated pages front and back. We gravitated toward the lunch section. Ordered - * hubby got the tonkatsu ramen * I got the two items bento box - comes with miso soup and side salad. Chicken katsu and California roll. Pros: * hubby & BIL were very pleased with their ramen noodles. * I got eight pieces of California roll. Very plumb pieces. * sis enjoyed her bento box * water refilled Cons: * had to request wasabi. Both sis & I had bentos. Usually there's a dollop in the box. * my chicken katsu breading - was it panko? * my tonkatsu sauce - watery & lacked umami Service was friendly and we got two separate checks as requested. My first time here and I enjoyed my Black Garlic Ramen. The service was bad, miso soup spilled on our table and he saw it. He didn't do anything. We had to ask for napkins so we can clean it up. And he gave us one. So we ate a with a miso soup on our table still. Bad business. read more
My friend and I went to Kigawa for brunch on the weekend. We got there right when they opened. For the 2 hours that we were there, we didn't see any other guests, and the restaurant was pretty much empty. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Right after we got seated, our server brought us hot tea while we looked at the menu to decide what we wanted to order. We tried the frog legs skewers, omakase nigiri, and the sushi combo. The sushi combo included 8 pieces of nigiri with 1 roll of your choice (California roll, spicy tuna roll, or spicy salmon roll). The prices of both the omakase and the nigiri deluxe combo were pretty good, and the cut of the fish in each nigiri piece was pretty big. Some nigiri pieces were too fishy and chewy, so we weren't a fan of those. The uni was not as fresh, and the wasabi was a bit overpowering in some sushi. My friend liked the frog legs skewers. In the end, we also got a small dessert drink free of cost to finish things off. It was very smooth and sweet. Overall, it was a decent experience. read more

Karaage - (3/5): Great crunch and flavor, though pieces were very small Shoyu ramen - (3/5): Decent portion size, the pork belly was a bit fattier than I typically like but I enjoyed the ample amount of it. Omakase nigiri - (1/5): Never again, I not only had repeat pieces but some of them made me gag and I couldn't chew some of the pieces. I did not end up finishing the box. The fish was not fresh and some fell apart as soon as I picked it up. Hard pass. read more

Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. Nigiri was excellent with delicious fish and well-seasoned rice. The beautifully cut fish allowed for a smooth bite, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture, especially for the tuna and yellowtail. I also enjoyed the seared whitefish, which had the slight smoky flavor of seared skin with a meaty yet tender bite. Unfortunately, the spicy tuna rolls were not to my liking. There is a certain spice that is common with Chinese cuisine that was present which gives it a strong flavor that overpowered the tuna. This might be a personal preference, but I don't think that spice meshes well with sushi. When I saw the chef ramen on the menu, I had a feeling that this is a well crafted Chinese-Japanese fusion dish. It was a tonkotsu ramen that replaces the standard chashu with some homemade wontons, essentially making this a mix of wonton noodle soup and ramen. Broth had a rich pork flavor, with bits of fat adding to the umami taste. Noodles had a nice bite and wood ear mushrooms were surprisingly soft, which I found to be a fitting match for the other textures in the bowl. Wontons had a soft wrapper that felt like a big, flat noodle. Insides were meaty, making it a perfect substitute for chashu. Service - 5/5. Very friendly and attentive! There was a sense of pride and love for the craft in the way their restaurant was setup. Despite us being one of the few people in the restaurant at the time, server was always checking how we're doing and refilling our cups. The food came out a bit slowly, but from how the food looked and tasted, you could tell it was due to it being made with a lot of care, rather than any kind of kitchen issue. Value - 5/5. The sushi combo of 8 nigiris and a choice of roll is $28 while the ramen was $17. These prices are a bit on the higher side, but more than justified by the high quality of their food. While I love a standard tonkotsu ramen, their wonton noodle soup fusion was an absolute delight. Ramen had plenty of wontons and loaded with noodles. Yelp check-in = Free soda. They honored each Yelp check-in, thanks. What an interesting experience... I am being generous with this review, more of 1.5 stars if even that. Quality/Quantity - D1 Chirashi Don - This was okay. The fish was fresh. I was starving when I got here, so the rice even tasted good, but only because I was starving. Not sure if I would have called this "sushi rice." It did not have the correct vinegar, sugar, and salt flavors that good "sushi rice" has. Kigawa Special Roll - As you know, we have to try the specials. This was okay. I think we would have enjoyed it more if the service was better. I think the poor service left a bad taste in our mouth, see below. Scallop Chicken Ramen - This was the best dish of them all. Decent portions. Good flavors. Good presentation. We did notice that "scallop" is singular and we actually only got half a scallop... Atmosphere - Small local restaurant. They used to own the location in San Ramon which is currently closed. Indoor and outdoor dining. Sushi bar seating. Private parking lot, thank you. Nice and convenient. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 9pm. But no one was here at 1:30pm... Service - What a failure... At 1:30pm, we were the ONLY customers. Actually we were the only people in the building??? As you can see from my pictures. We almost left. When the first guy arrived, we asked if he was open... As we would have left if he said no. He seemed confused, so we asked again. We then asked if we could sit at the corner table which confused him again... I think eventually he said yes. Then he hurriedly left. Another woman came, she was in a bad mood, maybe we disturbed their lunch...? As first time customers, we had many questions, especially about the sushi specials. She talked so fast that NO one understood her. I even think she mumbled her answers. My daughter wanted to know which rolls were which because the menu didn't even label it. When my daughter was asking, the waitress walked away mid sentence. So when she came back, we re-asked what one of the rolls were, and she said the picture is old and they don't sell that roll anymore. That's why we were so confused... At this point we thought about leaving, but I was starving. We even asked her if we interrupted her lunch...? And that we know they close at 2:30pm and we are fast eaters. We tried to make positive jokes to lighten her up and it might have worked (for a whole second). Lastly, we discovered that there were at least 4 employees, as they slowly came out from the back to hang out in the sushi bar area... Price - $65 + more generous tip then deserved. Hope it makes their day better. Owner Comments - Congrats on your success since 2018. We usually give businesses a second try, but we probably will not this time. Knowing that you had 4 employees, none with any service skills, left a bad taste in our mouth. Plus there are SO many good sushi restaurants in the area. read more

Kigawa bistro is a hidden gem in San Leonardo. The restaurant was quiet and the staff was very friendly. The food - My friend and I came here for lunch and decided to try the all you can eat option. We tried many different type of dishes and they were all very tasty. There was a lot of variety on the menu and all the seafood tasted very fresh! Our favorite items were the oyster, shrimp, scallops, and unagi fried rice. The unagi fried rice is a MUST TRY!! Sadly, our stomach wasn't big enough to try everything on the menu so we would definitely come back again! read more

Sushi lacks flavor but is great for the value. Nothing necessarily bad about this place. The food is okay, and the service is pretty good. There was no wait when I went either. However, the sushi just doesn't have any flavor to me. If you want somewhere affordable this is a decent place. But for real sushi lovers, I think it's worth it to pay a little extra and go somewhere else! read more

Tucked away in the streets of San Leandro, this place is easy to drive by. But we're glad we stopped here. The service is friendly and professional. We got the sashimi which came with a really cool sashimi presentation. We ordered the Kamikaze roll with spicy tuna and the big island roll with salmon and macadamia nuts. The food was delicious! They also have a selection of ramen in case your feeling like it. We'll definitely be back to sample some of the rolls! read more

We ate here on a weekday at noon. The service was good, but the food was awful. Maybe I'm just picky? 1. Gyoza was decent. Think Costco frozen food section. 2. Fried softshell crab tasted old and like burnt plastic. It wasn't prepared traditionally with a light dusting of flour and served w a slice a lemon and side of ponzu dipping sauce. Nope. It was breaded with panko and served with some aoli looking sauce. 3. Fried oysters tasted sour. Again, it wasn't prepared traditional style with panko bread and served with a side of tonkatsu sauce. This had an English fish and chips type of batter and served with the same aoli sauce. I'm sorry. Came with a party of 2 and ordered a bunch of nigiri (including otoro, yummm), flavored sake (the yuzu and strawberry are surprisingly good!) and a couple rolls. Pros: - Really yummy and fresh fish! the nigiri is banger - Decent service! - easy parking lot right outside - generous portions for the rolls and appetizers - Consistent - Reservations are helpful, can get popping around dinner time even on a weekday - casual atmosphere, nice for a friend hangout or a casual date, good for parties of 1-6. I was recommended this place and oh boy this restaurant hit the spot for one of the freshest seafood I have had in a while! Being a group, we were able to try bunch of different things. We had different assorted sashimi, uni, and ikura uni box. All of them were super fresh, tasty, and absolutely delicious. We tried Black Garlic Oil Ramen - flavors were phenomenal! Broth, pork, and fried garlic in it made it super delicious. Totally recommend this if you are garlic lover. Service was great as well. We were well taken care of and they repeatedly kept checking on us throughout our dinner. Over all great sushi/sashimi spot. Highly recommend this place. read more

Stopped by for lunch after driving by numerous times. Friendly staff , quick services delicious food. What more could you ask for. The toro was fresh and tasty along with the Fire Rainbow roll.
