I've been coming to Tsuru for almost 20 years and it's by far my favorite place for sushi by far. The food is always high quality and consistent. The staff and owner are rockstars that always make me and my friends feel like family when we come in. I've been coming here for over 30 years and Tsuru is still the best high-quality value anywhere. Mark, what do you mean, anywhere? I mean that I've spent BIG BUCKS on sushi in Omakase restaurants in San Francisco and at the well known spot in Alameda. I would rather order what I want from Tsuru. I order here with every confidence the food will be just right. The staff repeats our order before walking it to the chef. The sushi is assembled with care, cut with attention to detail and, of course, very flavorful. I'm a big fan of the Hotate (Scallop) which I order every time. I put a line of mayonnaise and a line of Sriracha. I know, I'm a wild man! They have Market Price special sushi listed at the bar. In the mood for sushi, I visited Tsuru with a friend, and I had their Chirashi. There was a modest selection of fish cramped into a small bowl. The presentation was clean, organized, and aesthetic though very cramped. You've probably heard of "living in a shoebox," well this would be like eating out of a sauce container. The fish were tasty, though they tasted as if they'd been out for a bit though still fresh on the lightly lukewarm side. Underneath the sashimi was a very generous portion of rice, maybe even 1.5 bowls? The rice was tasty and sticky with a good texture. Service here was on the slower side. This is an updates review. We went in for a late lunch yesterday. Around 2 PM, and it was very quiet, which was very nice. It's a very intimate setting in terms of space. It's definitely on the smaller side, almost to the point of tables and chairs being very close together and it just seemed like it could be a very cramped space if it were busy. The service was amazing. I have some dietary restrictions and they were very accommodating. When it came to the adjustment of recipes and such. The actual food was definitely of quality. The fish was excellent. Just kind of melted in your mouth. The pricing was very fair, and it was a very nice experience in general. I'm giving it a 5 star. Because I'm writing it based on the customer service, the quality of the food and the ambiance. I personally prefer a place that's a little quieter and not so busy, so I'm grateful for that. read more

I was actually bringing a friend to Sushi Delight around the corner, but I guess they're closed on Mondays despite Google giving me Monday hours for them! Happy to learn of a new and maybe slightly better sushi spot! The older waiter guy might be construed as cranky or not friendly, but he was fine and he got the orders right and even placed the correct order in front of the right person. Two of us had Bento boxes and one of us had the chicken teriyaki rice place. We shared the calamari appetizer. The calamari could have used more seasoning as it was bland even with the provided sauce. The Bento boxes and rice plate were all really good. The tempura selection is much better and plentiful than the other restaurant. The miso soup had more tofu and seaweed in it. The meats were just as good, too. Bonus points for the little section in the Bento box filled with pickled cucumbers and sesame seeds. Another great touch is the cute little dessert orange! We were surprised and pleased for this! Located right along E 14th, this cute restaurant has a decent selection of items on their menu. I had just come off of a 2-3 day fast and wanted to eat something lighter and clean. This spot was definitely "lighter" and "clean" eats for what we ordered. Ordered: - Green Magma Roll (White tuna w/ soy sheet & avocado sauce) - San Leandro Roll (Smoke salmon w/ avocado & sour cream) - Tempura (2 shrimp, 1 zucchini, 1 eggplant, 1 kabocha, 1 broccoli) - Chicken teriyaki & vegetables donburi So I'm a little upset about the donburi because I realized that they never even gave us our soup and salad that were supposed to come with it. Also, just FYI - the donburi and entree plates are exactly the same thing according to the server... The only difference is one is served in a bowl on top of the rice, while the plate serves each item separately.. but also the donburi comes with more rice, so I would assume the donburi has slightly more value at the same price.. Anyway, the chicken was pretty dry and they didn't give much veggies. Also, not a lot of teriyaki sauce to help with the dryness. It's not a terrible dish, but I'll probably never order that again. I enjoyed the tempura and it's light flakiness. The veggie items were ones that I favored. The San Leandro Roll is basically a Philly roll. Nice rice to ingredients ratio. The Green Magma Roll was a little different as it topped an avocado sauce, and I liked the bite size portions of these. Wanted to try a different spot than my usual area of getting sushi closer to Bayfair, but I can't say this was totally worth it. Their prices were honestly off-putting. A 3-item bento box was over $33 or so and their sashimi platters were out of my range of willingness to even look at for even just 6 pieces. The prices alone will deter me from coming back here. My favorite item there though was actually the complimentary hot green tea! It warmed my soul and was just what I needed to help me forget that we apparently didn't get our miso soup and salad. Fairly standard sushi spot. Plenty of paid parking in the area. It was pretty empty when we came in but service was still slow and felt like they didn't want us to be there. Regardless, we enjoyed the food. Fairly good rice to fish ratio. I liked that they had a variety of fish available, particularly amaebi. Tsuru Sushi is a San Leandro staple and has been here since I've first moved to this city back in 1997. They have a variety of items and specials and the prices are reasonable given inflation. My favorite seat in the house is at the chef's table where you get to see them whip out the delicious rolls in front of you. Norman and Stanley are so sweet and they are such a joy to be around every time we dine at Tsuru. Whatever you order, you'll always get a cup of hot tea and juicy orange slices as you pay. Recently whilst in the Bay Area, I was in need of some comfort food and at first I was going to drive to North Oakland to a Japanese restaurant that I  frequented years ago then I came across Tsuru, in San Leandro, CA, which was much closer to where I was lodging. For me, the atmosphere was very tranquil and therapeutic which was perfect for my lite afternoon snack. I was able to peacefully enjoy my iso soup before my Bento Box arrived which consisted of  Salmon Teriyaki, Tempura & 3 Piece California Roll and salad and of course, a large Kirin Ichiban beer for digestive purposes. As I was about to leave, I received a call from my cousin to bring home some East 14th rolls, prawn tempura, tobiko, avocado & spicy sauce.  Tobiko was new to me which is a type of caviar made from flying fish eggs. Went here because Kakuna sushi wasn't open yet and I have to say it was just very mid. And expensive for what you get. I ordered the 49er and the spicy tuna roll and katsudon. 49er was alright, the spicy tuna roll was my favorite because of the creaminess from the avocado. Their rolls are tiny though, so like I said it's expensive for what you get. The katsu in the katsudon was not crispy at all and the rice to chicken ratio was totally off. 75% of the bowl was just rice and I ended up not finishing it because of the shear amount of rice. For my experience last night, I had high hopes from my takeout experience. - Combination Dinner: my friend ordered this with the salmon teriyaki, California roll, and tempura. We were expecting a bento box, but it felt like a buffet! The food kept coming out! You definitely get a lot of food for the cost ($28). The combination dinner also comes with soup, salad, and rice. Talk about a meal! - 49ers Roll & Double Salmon Roll: I enjoyed my takeout 49ers roll, so ordered it again. For both rolls. The rice was pretty bad. I didn't taste the fresh sushi rice I was hoping for with the vinegar. The rice was kind of hard and it was clumpy. I was pretty disappointed with these two rolls. The avocado in the double salmon roll also wasn't ripe, so it was a bit hard and took over a majority of the roll. Came here for our anniversary dinner and the food and service was great. A friend recommended this place as a great establishment for Japanese food and one where the ambiance can be quiet enough to enjoy a book if necessary. The food was really nice and cooked well. My partner enjoyed the eel bowl and I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki bowl. My partner said it was the best eel he's had in awhile. The chicken was a little more on the dry side, but the California roll was really nicely seasoned with toasty sesame seeds and had plenty of avocado. There could have been more actual veggies in the rice plates. It's cute though at the end of your meal they cut up oranges for guests as well. One friend ordered the C&D choice of salmon teriyaki and sashimi, another friend had the 3 item lunch bento of gyoza, shrimp & vegetable tempura and California roll and I had the 3 item lunch bento of salmon teriyaki, shrimp & vegetable tempura and California roll. I ordered Water. , Chirashi Bowl And a Tempura Appetizer for there !!!! I also ordered a Dragon Roll to go for a Midnight Snack!!! I do like the Decor of Tsuru!!! There's a Large Aquarium with 2 huge fish swimming around and a Water Feature. The Sushi Bar looks very Unique as does the Front Counter Area. Service is Friendly and Efficient Also very Attentive!!! My Water Glass was never Empty!!! My Tempura Appetizer came out Piping Hot from the kitchen!!! It was Delicious and Presented very nicely!!! My Chirashi Bowl took a While!! It was Worth the Wait though !!! It was a very Artistic Presentation with a Purple Orchid Flower and Other Artistic twists !! The Fish was Fresh and Tasty!!!
