I first came here for dine out and the menu gave a good introduction to the dishes. The sushi was fresh, grilled Saba was nicely cooked, the aburi oshi sushi, tempura and agedeshi tofu were delicious. Not too oily. It was a lot of food for the dine out menu which made me feel I had my money's worth. I came back again with a friend and I had the lunch box. It was still very good food. My friend likes the simple California roll combo with nigiri and miso soup. On another visit, our party of four ordered a bunch of stuff to share. The curry Donburi was not too spicy, on the mild side and the potato croquettes were very tasty. The gyozas were good. Sashimi was fresh. Our friend who came in from Montreal declared it was one of the best Dragon rolls she had ever tasted. The crunchy topping for crunch crunch was delightful. It was all very good with great service and consistently fresh a food here. A bit pricy but you get quality food. read more

Came here with my family and there was a good variety of food on the table but everyone started digging into their food before I could snap any photos so I only managed to take photos of my own food which was an Avocado roll and Angry Tofu. Loved both my dishes. The Angry Tofu is a nice change of pace from Agedashi Tofu. It's got a bit of a kick to it. Still love my Agedashi Tofu but it's just nice to have something slightly different every now and then. The Avocado roll was excellent. We usually like getting Avocado roll from another restaurant that's actually in the same block as this restaurant. Always happy to know of another place though where we can get a good Avocado roll. No signs of browning on any of the Avocado, and they were very generous with the amount of Avocado that was put into the roll. This place was apparently part of the Dine Out Vancouver event. They had a Dine Out menu that was $55 but none of us chose to go for that. We preferred to order off the regular menu. I like that they have some different offerings on their menu such as the Angry Tofu, and I also saw Oden on the menu. This is probably the first time I've seen Oden on the menu at Japanese restaurant on the North Shore. On the other hand, I was surprised that some of the usual items I tend to see on most other Japanese restaurant menus, were not on the menu here. Seafood Yakisoba for example, wasn't on the menu. I was hoping to bring home an order of that for my mother who hadn't been feeling well enough to come out with us but I had to choose a different item since Seafood Yakisoba wasn't on the menu. I have never experienced anything like this in all my years of reviewing. Here's what happened...... Even before we walked in, I noticed the look of the exterior of the place had changed. Cheap sale signs and a covering of the entrance door had me thinking maybe they were closed, and once we entered it was clear that more than likely there was new management/ownership in place. The place was barren with one server, one hostess and two tables. We were sat, and ordered a couple of Miso Soups and Tea with the hostess. The energy, vibe and atmosphere had completely changed from before. It looked cheap, unkept and the staff didn't seem as friendly. Probably 15 min after we finished our Miso Soup and Green Tea, we were wondering why no one came to take our order...waiting, waiting, waiting..... Finally we flagged down the server with the short orange hair. She took our order and left. In the meantime, just when our Gyoza had arrived, a couple with a toddler were sat next to us and quickly it became apparent that they were intoxicated, and considering it was Dec 31 around lunch time, perhaps they had started the celebrations early. That poor kid started to scream, yell and cry and treat the place like it was her own playpen, and her parents seemed to be on another planet, so we just went ahead and requested a different table from our server...something a little quieter perhaps. I don't enjoy lunch with a side of screaming cries. I'm funny that way. Here's where it gets a bit hairy.... I had to ask her three times to be moved. With the restaurant being nearly empty....now I was confused, as to why she's so reluctant to such a simple request. Finally, she moved us to the back and while my ears were still ringing from the lovely child's scream, I thought our server would be grabbing our stuff from the table and bring it over. You know....the cutlery, the soups, the teas and the Gyoza. Well....she didn't. Ever. Yup. She sat us at the new table with nothing while all our stuff was still on the first table we were moved from. Our cutlery, teas, soups and Gyoza that was going cold. I kept waiving her down. She kept ignoring us. Once. Twice. Three times. It became all very clear when she walked right by our table, looked right at me and gave me the dirtiest look. That's when I knew...she was refusing us service. Refusing customers service because they asked for a different table? That's their standard I guess. Refusing service without reason and a dirty look....that'll open your appetite! We had ordered six rolls and a few appetizers, and since I couldn't get the orange hair to come by, I asked the hostess to cancel our order, bring us the bill for the teas and soup, as we just wanted to leave. What makes this even more of a shame is that we were regulars here. The previous management and staff cared about their customers, the locals and the neighbourhood, and it showed in the service and reception. Decent sushi/Japanese place, close to Ambleside. Relatively decent raw fish. I had a wild salmon one which was great. Decent salmon and tuna sashimi, hamachi too. Wife had sablefish which looked fantastic. Lots of rolls and options but we decided not to share rolls - the aburi was not bad, great flavour. Lots of bento boxes too and kids enjoyed theirs. Good service and tea. So I would say, not a bad stop on the way to or from Ambleside. read more

Came here after shopping in west van and hearing good reviews. They have many special rolls to choose from and very light, clean flavours. Sashimi was interestingly plated and the "regular rolls" aren't anything special and rice is a little thick. Fish was all fresh and my favourite was the black rice on the salmon cake (would recommend) :) Prices are a bit higher but not bad for some sushi. read more

The last time I went here was about 2 years ago, where they gave me cold takoyaki and I didn't come back in fear of bad food. Recently my grandparents wanted to try something new, and so they chose Ki-Isu. It was quiet in the restaurant with only one other person other than us. We ordered 3 items: Tempura Udon, California Salad, and a half order of the Crunch Crunch Roll. The tempura udon was great, the soup had flavour and the tempura was crisp, the udon noodles were also cooked nicely. I liked the California salad because they add fried seaweed to the roll to make it crunchy which I like. The vinaigrette on the salad was nice and wasn't dressed too heavily. The best dish of the night for me was the crunch crunch roll. It was a tuna roll with crunchy tempura bits at the top. It tasted very light and was not very heavy. Service was nice and the food arrived quickly which was appreciated. Ki-Isu has really improved the last time I arrived. read more

Excellent miso soup and ebi sunomono. The Tuna stack was a nice surprise, very tasty....look forward to trying it with black rice...they were out. Gyoza were good (I just prefer them a little crispier). The mango and salmon steak roll was very tasty. Service was pleasant and friendly....we were very pleased and will definitely be coming back. This is a very fine establishment. A REAL Japanese restaurant, not just a sushi joint and the prices don't jump so you're pretty much getting the best of everything. You know when you get Nigiri and there's more rice underneath than fish on top? Well they make theirs perfect, not too much rice, and the freshest nigiri toppings I've ever had. The lunch combo comes with a miso soup and a salad but they serve it like you are fine-dining. Very cool. Top notch for Vancouver. I have to try their other location in Yaletown next time, which is closer to home. The only little glitch was the debit machine only takes cards that have 4 digit passwords and unfortunately my dining partner has a 8 digit code... Lunch was on me yesterday. read more

Had an apppintment nearby so came here to check it out for lunch as per decent reviews on yelp. The food was average and I was a little disappointed by the service. Pro's: they have low sodium soy sauce available and the ambience definitely better than a sushi garden type of restaurant. I ordered the lunch set D and the salad was a nice size. The fish is reasonably fresh and the rolls aren't too gimormous and over stuffed like some Japanese restos. Con's: We waited over 20 minutes before we got our food. Keeping in mind other than the teriyaki chicken in one of the sets nothing else was cooked. Even the table that came after us got their food first. Our server forgot to give us tea until I had to remind them. Then no spoons for our soup. Had to remind them for low sodium soy sauce a few times. Finally when the food came at different times, I was so starving and only 5 mins into eating realized they had forgotten to bring part of my meal, the salad. When I had to chase the sever down again I could tell she felt bad that they had messed up on the service - she was super polite about it but nevertheless left feeling disappointed with the service as I felt like I was continuously just waiting and then chasing them down for things. The only thing that came super fast was the bill -- we didn't even need to ask for it -- as it was passed to us just as I was putting the last bite of food in my mouth ;) Maybe they were having an off day! What a great find in West Vancouver and now a new favourite of mine! I ordered a number of items, not least of all their wonderful collection of assorted sashimi which included a melt-in-your mouth hamachi toro. Certainly one you should try. I also ordered the dark sweet roll which used a black rice base and includes a great assortment of ingredients, but I won't spoil the fun, try it! Lastly, their tako sushi was nicely sliced and not as chewy as others I've had. Definitely a recommend for sushi in Vancouver. read more

Small sushi joint, that offers very good quality fish. I've been here a couple of time for lunch and everything it's been very good. They also offer special rolls, on top of ur sushi and sashimi. Fresh fish and tasty udon, however the service leaves a lot to be desired. I was halfway through my order when the server interrupted me asking if I was hungry... and saying I was ordering a lot of food. This not being my first rodeo I told her I'm about that action and kept going with my order. Cant think of anything bad to say about this place, except that it is a bit out of my way. The food and service were good and the prices werent too bad. The rainbow roll was a bit different, but it was okay and a good price. Rather than having a blob of wasabi on the plate it was turned into a sauce and spread out on the plate under the roll. The tuna stack was delicious, but I feel the price was a bit high. I haven't had anything like it before but after looking around the price appears to be pretty standard. My husband and I went here and it was fantastic. Everyone working inside was extremely helpful and doing a great job, working hard! The sushi was reasonably priced and tasted great. We asked for some suggestions and the waitress gave us plenty of great ones. I was a bit confused by the warm green tea given as a drink instead of water, but with some help we learned what it was and it was great! We also asked for water on the side. I went there for my second lunch with a friend. I didn't plan on eating anything but the temptations were too much to withhold and I ended up having a feast. I started with a Miso soup and Edamame. I gotta say the Edamame came out hot and tasted great. But the belle of ball was the spicy chicken Donburi which is in my opinion the best dish at that restaurant. I loved their mix of hot sauce which is different from the sweet hot sauce you get at most sushi places. I've been to this restaurant twice now and have no complaints. The food is really fresh and they substitute white rice for brown rice which I really like. The combos are a good price. I haven't tried the other menu options yet but the pictures look really good and pretty healthy too. The staff are attentive and take my order in good time and refill the tea regularly. I prefer this place to the popular sushi place next door because it's smaller so the staff pay more attention to you. Actually, as an after thought, my tea was cold today but whatever, not a big deal. read more

I wanted to really like this place, but there's nothing to really give them points for. It's a little bit more expensive that what I'm used to paying for sushi downtown/kits/commercial considering all the amazing sushi you can get in this city for a fair bit less, but it IS west van, so I expected that. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, real crab roll, gomae, and the regular gyoza for pick up. When I got home, I saw the girl had forgotten to put the gomae in my bag. I know I should have checked before I left, but I watched her fiddling with my order (and the gomae) for ages before putting them in the bag, so how she missed the bag is beyond me. She also hadn't put any soy sauce packets or anything. When we finally got to eat the meal, the gyoza was terrible. All of it had already fallen apart when they put it in the container, and it had no flavour at all. most of the food tasted like water, to be honest. They were generous with the amount of tuna they put in the rolls, but it had no flavour, and neither did the 'real crab' roll. The people were really sweet (if kind of super loud for a sit in restaurant) and the place had been decorated with a very warm atmosphere, but the 22.50 I spent was the biggest waste. Add to that the fact that it was a big splurge for me to get a take out meal right now, this was SUCH a disappointment. read more

Fresh, reasonably priced, and a very casual and hip little sushi. The service was good and the food came out lightning fast. My suggestions would be: Spicy tuna dynamite roll, spicy salmon sashimi, salmon nigiris, uni with quail egg, and miso soup. I came here with a friend for a weekday lunch as I was in West Vancouver this week for work. I ordered the Lunch Special C ($10.95) which included sunomono, chicken (or beef) teriyaki with rice, a california roll, salmon, tuna & prawn nigiri, and miso soup. It was great value and I was stuffed by the end. I especially liked the chicken teriyaki, which was fried and crispy but not at all overly greasy. The menu featured a lot of interesting rolls I'd definitely want to come back to try. A lady dining beside me ordered a really neat looking aburi with salmon and shredded seaweed on top. I don't know what it was but it looked amazing. Service was friendly and quick for lunch even though there was only one server. I don't venture out to West Vancouver on my own now that my permanent job is elsewhere but I would definitely come back. If only I had discovered this place sooner! read more

oh i quite like this place. the first time we went, we were unfortunately in a mad rush to get my kid to soccer. we needed to eat and sushi's quick, right? well, the service was crazy slow and we started to panic thinking our food won't even be ready and we'll have to leave. the server was very kind and apologetic and finally brought out our first dish. which was delicious!! she came back to explain that the machine that held the orders had broken down so communication to the kitchen had suffered. she continued to bring the rest of our dishes -- they were all very tasty -- until we couldn't stay any longer or my boy would be late for his training. she then made sure the rest of our order was packed up and ready for us to take FREE OF CHARGE. plus she included their house roll also FREE OF CHARGE!! that's service you don't often see. we would have gone back anyway because we loved the food, but with that kind of service, that's our new sushi spot when we're in west van. read more

A really nice place!! They serve inventive sushi rolls with rich flavours. I got a seasonal special (tuna on brown rice -- I was attracted by the picture on the menu) and the red roll, and I absolutely loved them! The beef don was average though. read more

It is probably a year since we have been to this restaurant. Things seem to have changed. We should have left before we sat down. All the chairs have torn and/or badly worn upholstery. My companion had to find another chair that wouldn't tear her tights. Fabric in tatters on the backs of the chairs, just hanging off. When asked for a drink of pop, server arrived back with a can and a straw. No glass, no ice. At no time did anyone attempt to refill our tea. The spinach salad was very unusual. No taste of sesame, neither of us could identify what was going on with the dressing. Suffice it to say, the salad was left. Food was dumped down on the table. No attempt at any interaction. The tofu dish, was served in 4 huge pieces, making it tough and dry. The washroom smelt dreadful. For the first time in my life, I didn't leave a tip and I have done a review. read more
