    Hamachi sashimi
    Evan C.

Decent sushi/Japanese place, close to Ambleside. Relatively decent raw fish. I had a wild salmon one which was great. Decent salmon and tuna sashimi, hamachi too. Wife had sablefish which looked fantastic. Lots of rolls and options but we decided not to share rolls - the aburi was not bad, great flavour. Lots of bento boxes too and kids enjoyed theirs. Good service and tea. So I would say, not a bad stop on the way to or from Ambleside.

Came here after shopping in west van and hearing good reviews. They have many special rolls to choose from and very light, clean flavours. Sashimi was interestingly plated and the "regular rolls" aren't anything special and rice is a little thick. Fish was all fresh and my favourite was the black rice on the salmon cake (would recommend) :) Prices are a bit higher but not bad for some sushi.

Can't believe this location is going to close starting March 31, 2019, that is only five days from today! How would summer be without Ki Isu!? Seriously hope they would re-open at close by location in West Vancouver.

Half order of crunch crunch roll

The last time I went here was about 2 years ago, where they gave me cold takoyaki and I didn't come back in fear of bad food. Recently my grandparents wanted to try something new, and so they chose Ki-Isu. It was quiet in the restaurant with only one other person other than us. We ordered 3 items: Tempura Udon, California Salad, and a half order of the Crunch Crunch Roll. The tempura udon was great, the soup had flavour and the tempura was crisp, the udon noodles were also cooked nicely. I liked the California salad because they add fried seaweed to the roll to make it crunchy which I like. The vinaigrette on the salad was nice and wasn't dressed too heavily. The best dish of the night for me was the crunch crunch roll. It was a tuna roll with crunchy tempura bits at the top. It tasted very light and was not very heavy. Service was nice and the food arrived quickly which was appreciated. Ki-Isu has really improved the last time I arrived.

Boy was that sunomono great. Tempura perfect.

Came here for dinner and ordered a special box which was served lightning fast. Everything was great. Very cozy environment, too.

We're from Toronto but we're passing through West Vancouver and decided to stop for BC sushi. This place was tasty, light and quick! Good service too. Just the right casual environment. We ordered a Ki-Isi roll, Caterpillar roll, and dynamite combination. The combination came with soup and salad. Also got a dancing dynamite roll because the food was a little light.

Best sushi in town! Wish there was a location closer to home, but worth the drive! Highly recommend the tuna aburi & salmon cake!

Lunch set D. Meh, it was ok.

Had an apppintment nearby so came here to check it out for lunch as per decent reviews on yelp. The food was average and I was a little disappointed by the service. Pro's: they have low sodium soy sauce available and the ambience definitely better than a sushi garden type of restaurant. I ordered the lunch set D and the salad was a nice size. The fish is reasonably fresh and the rolls aren't too gimormous and over stuffed like some Japanese restos. Con's: We waited over 20 minutes before we got our food. Keeping in mind other than the teriyaki chicken in one of the sets nothing else was cooked. Even the table that came after us got their food first. Our server forgot to give us tea until I had to remind them. Then no spoons for our soup. Had to remind them for low sodium soy sauce a few times. Finally when the food came at different times, I was so starving and only 5 mins into eating realized they had forgotten to bring part of my meal, the salad. When I had to chase the sever down again I could tell she felt bad that they had messed up on the service - she was super polite about it but nevertheless left feeling disappointed with the service as I felt like I was continuously just waiting and then chasing them down for things. The only thing that came super fast was the bill -- we didn't even need to ask for it -- as it was passed to us just as I was putting the last bite of food in my mouth ;) Maybe they were having an off day! Still, neither the food nor service left a memorable impression.

I tried something new this time. It was a cold rainy day so I was in the mood for a bowl of hot soup and noodles. I had a Vege Udon. My mom ordere the seafood Udon. So OK...I suppose soup and udon noodles isn't exactly trying something new as I've definitely had soup and udon noodles before. However, udon noodles are something I have rarely ever ordered over the years. Especially as Ramen seems to have gotten more popular over the years than Udon. Plenty of Ramen restaurants within Greater Vancouver, but how many restaurants in Vancouver specialize in udon? Not very many. I don't know why I don't order udon noodles more often. When it's a cold, rainy day I always think Ramen noodles but this bowl of Vege Udon was just as satisfying as any bowl of Ramen. Actually, maybe more so since I've had lots of Ramen over the years but hardly any bowls of udon noodles. This was a refreshing change of pace. They serve the udon noodles in what appeared to be a cast iron bowl. Simple yet so elegant. I loved the flavor of my broth. It was a nice, light broth. Not too rich, and it had a sweet flavor to it. I think I've just regained a new appreciation for Udon noodles!

Ordered the crispy oshi (so good and highly recommended by one of the waiters) and 9 pieces of nigiri. I also ordered individual pieces of uni and masago nigiri. Well, she surprised her mom recently when we went to Bene Sushi and she actually wanted to try one of the "Exotic Rolls". She still wanted some of her usual stuff, which was Dynamite Roll and Avocado Roll, but in addition she also wanted to try the Ambleside Roll. I was quite full from our lunch earlier in the day and my original plan was to order a salad. However, when she suggested sharing some rolls with each other, and expressed an interest in trying something new...how could I not jump at the opportunity to see my child trying something new? Of course I would share with her! It meant stuffing myself silly but hey...my child wanted to try something new and if that meant eating carbohydrate heavy sushi rolls instead of a light salad...so be it! All 3 rolls were awesome. My personal favourite is still the Avocado roll. Even though it's a simple roll, this restaurant does it so well every time...it never fails to impress me. Avocados can go brown so easily, but every time we order Avocado roll from Bene Sushi, it is generously packed with avocado and the avocado is always such a bright and beautiful green colour. I don't know how they manage to always have perfectly ripe avocados for their sushi. I really commend them for it.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.
