Our daughter tends to have her favourites and sticks with them again and again for ever such a long time before she finally decides to try something new for a change. Well, she surprised her mom recently when we went to Bene Sushi and she actually wanted to try one of the "Exotic Rolls". She still wanted some of her usual stuff, which was Dynamite Roll and Avocado Roll, but in addition she also wanted to try the Ambleside Roll. I was quite full from our lunch earlier in the day and my original plan was to order a salad. However, when she suggested sharing some rolls with each other, and expressed an interest in trying something new...how could I not jump at the opportunity to see my child trying something new? Of course I would share with her! It meant stuffing myself silly but hey...my child wanted to try something new and if that meant eating carbohydrate heavy sushi rolls instead of a light salad...so be it! All 3 rolls were awesome. My personal favourite is still the Avocado roll. Even though it's a simple roll, this restaurant does it so well every time...it never fails to impress me. Avocados can go brown so easily, but every time we order Avocado roll from Bene Sushi, it is generously packed with avocado and the avocado is always such a bright and beautiful green colour. I don't know how they manage to always have perfectly ripe avocados for their sushi. I really commend them for it. read more

The fish was high quality and very fresh. The staff were quick with service, and the dishes came at an appropriate time. The restaurant is quiet for the most part, good place to socialize, but the TV's playing sports and ads are a little distracting. The appetizer sashimi (2 salmon, 3 tuna) is a little pricy for the amount, but the fish was very fresh and delicious, also the wasabi that came with it was amazing- not the horseradish squeeze-tube but actual authentic ground-up wasabi. We were very impressed. Sunomono (Ebi) was a generous helping of shrimp and noodles. Worth the price compared to other places. read more

Pretty good sushi place, I like that they have gluten free soya sauce but would prefer if they had more gluten free items available. The sushi has always been fresh when I've come here and the service has always been friendly. If you really want to try this place....go and dine in....maybe then they'll practice some standard in serving you and their presentation. So, regretfully we decided to pick up some Sushi on our way to a potluck dinner party. I ordered the Deluxe Sashimi Platter and the Dynamite Sushi Combo over the phone, and they made sure to let me know that they would be charging me extra for extra ginger on an order that was already overpriced and under-delivered. Ok...here's the deal: In any part of the world where living beings have two ears, one mouth, two eyeballs, five fingers, walk upright and tend not eat their first born if it's a cold winter....tend to think of a party platter as....well....a platter for a party...you with me so far?....ok. Well, it was to my surprise that this party platter that we ordered was so tastefully put together in a styrofoam box....YES....Styrofoam. I was relieved that I picked something from the "Chef's choice" section...I mean if it had been let's say from the "Janitor's section"....I probably would've been handed each sashimi in the palm of my hand....(no offence to janitors....they make the world a much cleaner place!). So yeah.....the octopus in the sushi combo was very chewy and the Dynamite roll....I've had better Dynamite Rolls at airport lunch counters..... I usually order takeout from this place, but over the weekend, I opted to dine in with a friend. What a lovely time we had! The food here is excellent, especially the spicy Gochujang sauce they use on the spicy tuna. I also tried a new roll, which was fantastic. We were pleasantly surprised with complimentary tea as we sat down. The restaurant has ample space, and the dining room wasn't too loud. In terms of sushi pricing in Greater Vancouver, I'd say it's in the middle range. The staff were considerate and made sure to check about my peanut allergy. As someone with a severe allergy, I felt secure eating there. They took great care to ensure my food was safe. I had a meal at Bene Sushi in West Vancouver yesterday and was extremely disappointed. I went here years ago and liked this restaurant at that time, but I would not go back now. For 2 people we ordered $100 worth of food and only enjoyed one of the rolls. The service was terrible. The agedashi tofu, gomae and gyozas were the worst I have had anywhere. Only one out of the 3 specialty rolls we ordered was yummy, and the salmon sashimi was cut in such large pieces it was off-putting although some people may like it that way. Where do I start? I and my fiancé came to west Vancouver for vacation and our mission was to try all the sushi places we come across. By far, this restaurant won our hearts and we even visited multiple times which is something we never do. I attached multiple photos of every roll we ordered and every single roll was beyond perfect from every aspect!!!Taste, presentation, quality, texture....etc. Every single aspect, literarily. The desert was amazing and very Delicious. Professionally presented and just amazing. The atmosphere is very calm, quiet and cozy; Very relaxed piano music played in the background. Bene Sushi is very likely the best sushi place in West Vancouver. The first thing you noticee about this place is how big and luxurious the interior is compared to typical North Shore sushi restaurants. It has a feel more like Cactus than your average Japanese restaurant. Seating is wide and comfortable. Food quality is good to very good and very consistent at a price level which is competitive. The restaurant has very good turnover so ingredients are very fresh. Nigiri sushi and some of the rolls are surprisingly good. My favorite dish here is West Van roll which has sockeye salmon, unagi, fried prawn, avocado and others rolled into a super delicious roll. I seldom like rolls but this roll is very tasty. Just delicious!! Nigiri sushi are mostly well prepared and their omakase sashimi is somes very good depending on available ingredients. Tempura is also fried spot on. Another dish I like is their spicy seafood noodle. A great dish to share after drinking. Service is very friendly and efficient here. I personally had a great experience at Bene Sushi. The staff were sweet and attentive: they were prompt to seat us, eager to take our orders and always pouring teas for us. The food itself was delicious and they had great lunch deals and the sushi also tasted fresh. Price wise, very reasonable for the amount of food you get (and honestly, you get A LOT). Ambience is calm and there's plenty of seating. Very clean and organized. Typical look for a Vancouver sushi restaurant with the booths. This used to be my favourite sushi spot. But the last 2 times we went they told us the restaurant was closed midway through our meals, when the hours online stated otherwise. The server forgot to bring us one of the rolls we ordered. Instead of apologizing and bringing this out, he argued with all 3 of us and said we did not order that roll, and refused to serve us any more sushi. This was unaccomodating and ridiculous. What a wonderful sushi place! Tonight was my second visit in less than a week.... the first was a spontaneous dinner during bridge closure and dual traffic accidents on the upper levels hwy in north van. As I work closer to 25th in west Vancouver, this area of town is usually enjoyed as I slide past on a bus. However as it turned out hunger and bad traffic were the instigators of finding this gem. Classically decorated with shiny sparkly diamond-like light fixtures, neck and higher booth walled seating and a lovely dark wood leaning. I have since returned two or three times since starting this review. Service here is mostly awesome - however it's easy to be overlooked if sitting in their high walled booths. Food is delicate and a taste wonder no matter what I've tried. I highly recommend having a pint of Asahi - you get a free portion of edamame. ;) read more

Really yummy sushi and tempura, though the other items on the menu aren't as authentic or tasty. I tried their Blue Ocean roll and Unagi Flaming roll, and both were delicious! The thing that really sets their rolls apart is that they use a lot less rice than most sushi places, so you get a high filling to rice ratio. Moreover, the ingredients all combined together really well, especially with the added umami and creaminess from the sauces. I also got lunch special D, which came with salad, gyoza, chicken yaki udon, nigiri, and tempura (you can customize the last three). I really liked how fresh the nigiri was, and the tempura was crisp and contained the right amount of batter. The salad was decent as well. However, I found the chicken yaki udon and gyoza to be sub par; neither authentic nor delicious. Although this place looks small from the outside, it's actually quite big! The service is pretty efficient, and the ambience it is casual and comfortable. Bene Sushi is a great place to stop by for some sushi and tempura! However, if you're looking for other Japanese dishes, I would try to find a different restaurant instead. read more

I love this restaurant! My friend took me here before the Harmony Arts Festival last year and I've been hooked ever since. My favourite menu item is the tuna and avocado salad. The portion is huge and it tastes amazing. The dressing is fabulous and everything is so fresh; it really is as visually appealing as it is flavour-wise. The service is always friendly, and they are very prompt when it comes to refilling water and tea. The presentation on all of the dishes is incredible. Like works of art coming out of the kitchen - each dish more impressive than the last. The rolls are very creative and visually stunning. Every time I'm in West Van, I go to Bene Sushi. Decent food, but terrible service. I told myself I wouldn't go back to Bene after my previous time there, but friends encouraged me to go as part of a large group. Well, the service was terrible once again, and this time, my friends were the ones who were frustrated. One of them didn't even get their food, and had to cancel because everyone else was finished eating by the time her sushi arrived. Another had to ask 3 different servers for hot sauce until she finally got some, while her agedashi tofu was now cold. When it came to payment, the server dropped off the bill and then came back 15 minutes later to process the payments from our group. Will not go back! read more

Used to come here all the time when I was going to school nearby. This is probably the best sushi spot in West Van (there aren't that many, sadly). Their sushi and sashimi are fresh and really tasty. They have a lot of "fusion" japanese food, but that's most of whats out there. I usually go here for rolls - spicy tuna, black tiger, caterpillar are my go tos and there are really tasty. I'm usually a fan of Chirashi and Katsu, but I'd suggest to stay away from them here (they aren't that good). Their rolls are pretty good because there's not too much rice and their fillings are really fresh, everything a good roll should be. Appies are a bit on the small side and not that great. Service here is passable. They get the job done, not too much to comment on here. This is a great place to take friends or family, not too casual and the prices are decent. I don't know what happened here. Came back from summer vacation and found that their service just took a dive. We came in from the backdoor for dinner. As we were approaching to the front door, we saw a server and checked with him whether it was fine to sit at a table close to the bar area. We then had the permission. As we were settling down, another server came straight to us and blamed, and I quote here "you SHOULD come to the waiting area first". As I was about to start to talk, a bar lady showed up and repeated the exact same words to me "you SHOULD first come to the waiting area". "We came in from the backdoor, and...", as I tried to explained to her, she interrupted me and said "it doesn't matter and you should come to the waiting area first". I got pissed and walked away. We ended up siting at the same spot that we had settled down the first time. The food is fine. The restaurant choices are too limited here in West Vancouver, and sometimes you just have to deal with this type of unpleasant incidents for the food. read more

Not only nicer than any of the North Van's sushi places, but West van too, though I don't have much experience on this side of Marine Drive. It's an easy repeat for sure, and date worthy ;) Mostly black leather booth seating, with raised red trim for some privacy...kinda reminds me of the original location of Miku in DT Vancouver, except this is more Korean-operated. Great service too. Ordered their signature Bene roll, Ambleside roll and negitoro roll based on the review here, and didn't disappoint. First 2 were variations of prawn tempura but the latter had the yam and some crunch. Good rolls, though not crazy good like the Awesome Roll at Sushi Town or the Las Vegas roll at Sushiholic. Prices a bit north but to be expected here, not overly. servers were actually more informed about the menu, and patient too. accepts all cards. free on street. in fact, it's a city by-law for no pay meters, that's a nice change. read more

Service was slow to start but got better. I started with the pork gyoza and they were delicious! For dinner I had beef teriyaki with vegetables and black rice. 3.5 that went up due to very friendly service. This was my third time here, and like most places in Vancouver, sushi was very good. They offer beef tattaki, however here the beef is half cooked and served warm in their sauce which is different from other places and I think is worthy of trying. Other than that, they have a good combination of sushi, sashimi and special maki so everyone can enjoy the food here. Service is very good and prices are just a little higher than most other places but hey, it's west van! Good place for date though, the decor inside is nicer than most other sushi joints. read more

Bene sushi stands out for having great miso soup and sophisticated specialty rolls. But the staff is mostly foreign workers. The wait time for sushi is long and it seems like they prioritize their Takeaway customers rather than feed the real ones. But for having a slightly higher price then The other sushi restaurants in the area I'd say a two star rating is about right. Hopefully they'll spend more time training their employees and start cleaning the dirty dishes better. read more

A solid 3 stars and nothing more. A friend suggested to try this place for dinner and to West Van we went. We were quickly seated and flipped through the menu. Ever since I had Aburi sushi, that's usually the first thing I look for on the menu. I found that they had three Aburi sets to choose from. I ordered the Aburi Sushi 3 which consists of Toro, Atlantic Salmon, Hamachi, Hotate, Unagi, AAA Steak and Amebi for $20.95 and for appetizers I had the Bridge of Tuna which was listed under Bene Favorites for $10.95. Though, my friend and I ordered at the same time, these two dishes came out first. The Aburi sushi's weren't as good as the ones I've had at Minami. The rice easily fell apart and about half of the sashimi's on top didn't have the melt in your mouth effect as it did at Minami. My favorite was the Hamachi and the Hotate. The bridge of tuna was served a bit frozen still. It was too cold and icy.Because this was one of the first dishes that came out we ate all but one piece and only that last piece tasted perfect (or how it should have tasted) when it's thoroughly melted. Minus points for serving it at the wrong temperature. My friend ordered the lobster roll ($15.95), spicy tuna roll (4.95) and yam tempura roll ($5.95). These came out all together and tasted ok. I didn't taste any lobster in the lobster roll. To me it tasted like imitation crab. We did get a lot and my friend thoroughly enjoyed it while I had one of each. Whilst I did not get my aburi satisfaction, I ordered the Aburi Sockeye (12.95) to share. It was also ok. Again, Minami and Victoria Sushi wins the game. While I waited for this order, I remembered reading about their flaming sushi and someone finally ordered it but my friend and I were too full to make another order and it was too late to switch. It looked really cool with the entire sushi lit on fire (at least from my view). I wonder if it does anything to the sushi - taste-wise. The restaurant wasn't too busy but for some reason the severs kept on running around. Service was very slow at our table and it was hard to get their attention. It was my first time going to Bene Sushi. My experience was a quite disappointed. First, while the restaurant was half empty and many small table & bar table empty , I (just one person) was told to wait 10 minutes. During the 10 minutes wait, the waiter was doing some other stuffs but not setting up the table for me. After I was seated, no one came to take my order until I stood up and waved at the waitress. I ordered the following: Prawn Tempura. Ika Aburi Nigiri, Toro Aburi Nigiri, Unagi Nigiri, Hamachi Nigiri, ikura Nigiri, Amaebi Nigiri, Nigitoro Roll. Prawn Tempura - It was overcooked. It was so hard that the prawn meat was shrunk and dried. Ika Aburi - OK. Toro Aburi - It was not fatty at all. I suspect it was just a Tuna and then seared. Unagi - It was cold and hard. They didn't cook or seared it properly. Hamachi - OK. But the fish is way too long. it was hard to take it. Ikura - Nothing special. They didn't even marginated like other good sushi restaurant. Amaebi - Ok. The deep fried prawn head was good. Nigitoro Roll - It tasted good but it looked ugly. It was out of shape.
