Late night sushi cravings, and Kiku was one of the places that opened a little later on Sundays. They also had outdoor seating so me and the S.O. brought along our pup! On arrival, the place was relatively low volume. Quite a nice walk to Kiku, since it was close by our place. Service was great, they were extremely attentive and promptly turned on the outdoor lights for us. Our waitress checked up on us frequently. Overall, service was perfect. It's nice that the restaurant offers vegan meals for variety! On their menu, they had a veggie charashi bowl. We ordered one of those and I must say, it was delicious! The sesame sauce they used went well perfectly with the assortment of veggies. On the other hand, the grade of sushi used for the three rolls we got were okay. Nothing spectacular or memorable, but then again I'm not too much of a sushi snob. They were fine for fulfilling my sushi cravings. Overall, I'd come back since it's close by and has outdoor seating, which is great when we want to bring our dog along with us. I had an AMAZING time at Kiku sushi tonight. We sat at the bar so we could see the sushi being made by the amazing husband and wife who run the place. We ordered almost half of the sashimi and sushi menu tonight. The fish was wonderfully fresh, and the portions were generous. We had some of the specials too, and I definitely could taste the differences between the two kinds of Saba (strong and a milder version), hamachi, and salmon. Here is what we had: - seaweed salad - tempura - fish liver appetizer - Saba (normal and the special which had a milder flavor) - hamachi sushi and hamachi appetizer (had jalapeño, grapefruit, and some citrusy ponzu sauce. So refreshing) - tuna (I forgot which kind but it was very sweet in flavor by itself) - sweet shrimp - salmon roe - uni (sea urchin) I can't remember what else we had. All I remember is how fresh everything was. I could tell by the color, texture, and of course, taste. They had no more tamago, so I'll have to try that another time. The damage? $134.00. NOT BAD!!! Kiku is where I would go when I crave for a good selection of nigiris but don't want to spend too much money in an omakase place! The fish here are so fresh and delicious and they have a great selection! I love their Umimasu (ocean trout), Iwash (sardine) and Shima Aji (Horse Mackerel). They also have great uni and ama ebi. More amazingly, they let you get one piece of nigiri in the order so when I go by myself I can still eat a good variety. It's also very affordable and has good service. Totally recommend! read more

The space is very small and tucked in a corner, and there was a short line on a Saturday. I came here with my company to get sushi because it's been awhile since I've visited a sushi place located within the East Bay Area. I've been freaking my favorite spots lately and I wanted to try something new. This place is a little gym hole in the wall and doesn't have much seating so if you're trying to come here for dinner on a Saturday night please come early because it gets packed really easily and really fast as the time moves on throughout the night. The specials are located on the wall when you can read them the quality of the fish is superb it is so fresh and so delicious the tuna fat belly is amazing the salmon belly is amazing even the California rolls are made with real crab. This is definitely become one of my top favorite sushi spots that I will come back to you. It's just hard to get to you, parking isn't really that great, and the area is really small. The hot green tea I got was delicious, came out fresh and hot and was not overly powerful or too weak. My company and I also got tuna rolls, which were delicious the calamari put on top made the handles pop with flavor and they were made to perfection. Our members at the food was so good, we had to order to go. The price is not expensive either, we had about five different types of roles and it came out to be$70 and then with the to go order it added an additional $20 to top of that so about $100. We get a bit excessive and order a lot so don't expect to be spending that much you probably will spend less. But definitely come check this place out I recommended it was delicious. A little cute restaurant located in Berkeley. I am always looking for a go-to affordable sushi restaurant if I'm ever craving sushi and this place may just be it! The sushi quality here is very high and affordable! My boyfriend and I got out of here with our bill only being $78 total and we got some of the more expensive sushi options like the uni from Japan, which was $18. Other sushi options we got were ikura, hiramasa, baby tako, aji, chu toro, hotate, and sake toro sushi. My favorites were the hiramasa, chu toro, and uni from Japan. The fish really melts in your mouth!! One star is taken off just because it took a while to get our food. It was so long that we were considering on leaving. However, the waitress was kind enough to hand us some edamame and said it was on the house and our food will be ready shortly. They also checked up on us a lot after our food came to see if everything is good and if we needed anything. Overall, it's a great sushi restaurant and I will be coming back! read more

Don't get fancy rolls, just simple ones and taste the flavors. So good. I've been here three times and the first two had great service. Today the service was absolutely terrible. I don't know if someone called in sick or is training but... -we got one menu for two people -we were not offered beverages until we flagged down the server -it took a long time for beverages to come and we had to flag him down again and ask to order -the food (and we got nothing complicated and it wasn't very busy) took so long to come that my friend had to scarf it down to get back to work -I had to flag him down again for the check and then to pay it. We were seated by the window, already settled in, and first, they tried to wedge a seat in right next to our table, which would result in a chair back being literally against out table. What we ordered: Sake Nigiri - the salmon was rich and buttery. No chewy texture Hamachi Nigiri - I thought was eating toro, that's how fatty the yellowtail was when I took a bite of the nigiri! Amaebi Nigiri - yum, super sweet shrimp and they deep fry the head Uni Nigiri - sooo sweet and creamy! I think they use Santa Barbara uni Toro Nigiri - one of the best toro I've had in the states Kaisen Futo-Maki - get this sushi roll if you love sashimi. It's packed with salmon, tuna, and ikura. Tempura Siso Uni - the most disappointing item. Unfortunately, the taste of uni seems to be lost after being deep fried. The food was 2.5/5 and the service was a 1/5. Kiku is a very small and cute little restaurant. It was pretty busy when we got there but things were slowing down quite a bit. The food is pretty average, but their fish is really fresh and some of the better sashimi/nigiri that can be found around the area. The agadeshi tofu was placed into the tempura broth which I thought was really weird since it usually has a different more dashi based sauce, didn't mind too much though. Their nasu dengaku was extremely oily, but the miso sauce was decent. Their rolls are extremely average (had the futo-maki, mackeral roll, and salmon skin roll). The larger rolls were not rolled properly and were falling apart on the plate without even touching them. I thought that the fillings in the rolls were OK, but it could have used a lot of refining on their part to make the rolls more balanced in terms of flavors and build. The highlight of the meal was their fresh wasabi as it was spicy and flavorful. Paired with their super fresh nigiri, I thought that that was the only redeeming part of the meal. The sardine nigiri and bonito nigiri were extremely delicious. The service was absolutely terrible. We were seated and pretty much neglected throughout our meal after ordering. They never filled our waters (even when asked), and didn't even give me new utensils after I dropped my chopsticks. The food was extremely slow after the appetizers and sat for about twenty minutes without food after the appetizers were finished. They even tried to take away plates that weren't even finished and didn't even ask if it was ok to clear the table. When I asked for the bill however, two servers were extremely fast to get the check to the table. Wow. Their food is decent and I would consider ordering takeout, but their service is just terrible. My theory has always been that pictures don't lie. That theory has now changed. We ordered some rolls, chirashi, and also nigiri. As soon as my first plate came out, I had this terrible feeling of impending doom. I could tell that it was gonna be bad, and it definitely was. The portions are very generous, but a little too generous. The cuts of fish for the nigiri and sashimi are ginormous, thick, and chewy. It felt like buying a pack of halibut or salmon from the grocery store, and just chomping right into it. Never seen sashimi cut that big and sloppy. Usually after I eat a piece of fish, I'm begging for more. Over here, I had to spit it out. The rolls are inedible as well. I got it boxed up without taking more than a bite, so I could give it away to a homeless person, but I felt guilty even doing that. They basically just piled a bunch of shit on a plate, and threw sauce on top. The chef/servers/owners are not Japanese, and that's not a bad thing. Couldn't tell what language they were speaking, but it wasn't Japanese/Korean/Cantonese/Mandarin/Viet/Thai etc. That doesn't necessarily matter anyway. We've hit here on a pet peeve of mine which is: if you say you're open until 9:30 be open until 9:30. If I walk in at 9:31 tell me you're closed. If I walk in at 9:29 you're open and should serve me the same way you would have at 7:00. You weren't done; you just let me in, and you're still charging me the same prices you were charging at 7 p.m. So gentle reader, what time do you think I arrived here? Upon my 9:15 p.m. arrival, 2 tables were occupied and there was 1 customer at the sushi bar. I decided to sit at the sushi bar only to find that 1/2 the small counter, to the right of the lone patron, still had wasabi and rice pieces on it. Yech. I went to that patron's left and sat at a clean, unset space. Never was I offered a warm towel nor were any instruments placed in front of me. They were D-O-N-E. The sushi chef inquired about my order and it was clear I was to order now, whatever it was that I wanted. After placing my order, I waited in vain for some utensils or water to appear before me. I wound up having to request water and, separately, a napkin. With the napkin request, I think they realized their error, so it wound up being delivered with accompanying chopsticks. About 5 minutes after my food arrived (all at once on a single platter, which is not the usual sushi bar experience) someone came by to report that it was last call, get any additional orders in now. It's not like I was expecting anyone to hang out and party with me. At this point it was maybe 9:45 p.m. They sure were quick with that bill. I was back in my car, headed home at 10:03 p.m. Oh yeah, the sushi was very good. Great big pieces but well constructed and fresh tasting. I'd like to come back here and see whether the "service" was an (unacceptable) end of evening experience or whether it's par for the course. Though it's on the pricier side, Kiku Sushi definitely gets all its stars for the quality of its fish! I took my boyfriend here for his 21st birthday dinner, and we tried a good assortment of things that were all really worth the money. The grilled hamachi collar is a must-try. It has a lot of meat on it, and the crispy skin on the outside was a great contrast to the buttery and flaky fish on the inside. We also tried the futomaki, which is supposedly a vegetarian roll, but it had unagi inside. I actually loved it like this, and they added a little more than what's traditionally in futomaki. Both the chirashi and sake don had huge pieces of sashimi on top of a bed of sushi rice. The rice was just right, and I liked the sesame seeds on top that added a little extra crunch and flavor. The fish was extremely fresh, and they definitely give you your money's worth. I'm also a huge fan of tamago, so I was glad that it was also done really well. At the end of the meal, they included a green tea tempura ice cream as a birthday special! It's a little out of the way and pricey, but its quality is comparable to Kirala and other high-end sushi places in SF. Stick with anything with fish, and it'll be so worth it! read more

Have been here a couple of times and overall, the quality is consistently great and definitely a place to get authentic delicious nigiri and sashimi. I certainly agree that this is not the best place to eat out at for dinner every week without burning a deep hole in your wallet, but you should check out their lunch specials here. For their quality and price, I would say their lunch specials are pretty well worth it! I got their sushi lunch special plus an order of ikura nigiri recently for about $20, which I thought was a great deal. The sushi lunch special ($13) consisted of one maguro, hamachi, tai, sake, ebi, unagi, 6 pieces of real ca roll, and a miso soup. The quality of the fish is fresh and excellent, not to mention the slice of the fish is thick, and the rice is perfectly cooked and seasoned. I dipped the nigiri fish side down into a little bit of soy sauce and ate it side-ways (proper sushi etiquette?). The oil and flavor of the fish just blends so perfectly with the rice. It was like an explosion of flavors in my mouth. The salmon practically just melts like butter omg and the ikura was really good as well! Not sure why it took me so long to write a review for this place but here goes... When I first came here I would always order the black miso cod, spicy tuna roll and agadashi tofu. All of which are delicious. The spicy tuna roll isn't my fav only because they add some kind of seasoning to make it more spicy and I'm not a huge fan of it, but the cod is a great dish for those who like their food cooked and the texture (chewiness mmh) of the coating on the tofu is amazing. Then I upgraded to the hamachi curudo and let me just tell you, the hamachi with the grapefruit and jalapeño (hold the cilantro please) is such a great combo, especially with the grapefruit vinaigrette. Well, eventually I continued on my journey and started ordering sashimi. I love this place because their fish is fresh. My favorite? Sake. Laugh all you want, they have the most delicious sake. I can't explain it, you just have to try. I started dabbling in everything basically, hamachi, tuna, aji, etc. Long story short, this place had been an extremely important part of my growth in Japanese cuisine. I love coming here. The service is always great (sometimes a bit slow when it's busy, but nothing out of the ordinary). My favorites?.. Hamachi curudo Aji tataki (fried fish bones.. Kinda pricey but oh well. I also had the Tekka don and the sashimi was presented in a flower shape. I have always been a risk taker for new foods and sadly, I have never leaned towards trying "real" sushi before but I came here with a friend who could help me with the exposure. I know that I have been paranoid about trying sushi as I think I have some trust issues with where my food comes from sometimes. Place is small and also busy (rightfully so). It was FANTASTIC. I love me some sushi. The portions were a bit small but I could not even be mad about that because, the fish was fresh and scrumptious. We had the blue fin tuna, salmon, walu (my goodness), and the rainbow roll. I have not seen/tasted a fresher rainbow roll before. I wanted to give this place 4 stars as initially we had a rude customer service issue with seating but again, no big deal. I am a patient woman and our server was very pleasant and hooked us up. Great sushi place located at the corner of Gilman St and Neilson St! Location (5/5): This location is right at the corner - ideal for all businesses! Street parkings are limited, so you may have to park far away and walk here. Services (4/5): Services is quick, knowledgable and friendly. They take awhile to make food, which is perfectly fine for us. Food (3.5/5): We ordered the following dishes: seaweed salad ($5.95), sashimi sushi 6 pieces ($16.50), Kobe beef special sushi dishes ($6), salmon skin roll ($6.50), shrimp tempura roll ($8.00) and 3 mochi ice cream ($3.75). My favorite dishes out of all dishes were the fresh seaweed salad, the crispy salmon skin roll and the ending mochi ice cream. As recommended by a lot of Yelpers, the seaweed salad are indeed pretty refreshing. Unless you don't like seaweed textures, you may not like it. Second, I personally LOVE salmon skin, and I'm glad that their salmon skin was WAY crispy and flavorful. The shrimp tempura roll, on the other hand, was a nah~ It was oddly sour and not up to my preference. Up for desserts? Try out their mochi ice cream! Another sushi gem in Berkeley! This area offers so many sushi options that we've all just been spoiled silly. Now add Kiku Sushi to the mix. The restaurant is very simple and traditional, and that is how I would describe the sushi here. I can't handle those fusion and Americanized sushi joints. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to find this refreshingly plain and quiet Japanese restaurant. My colleague and I came during the tail end of lunch. There were only a few customers in the restaurant. After being seated, we both received a hot cup of green tea. I decided on the Sushi Lunch Special while my coworker ordered the Chirashi Bowl. These both came with a bowl of miso soup. The Sushi Lunch Special consisted of the standard CA roll (six pieces) and six types of nigiri: salmon, tuna, ebi (shrimp), hamachi (yellowtail), unagi (sea eel), and tamago (egg). For those who aren't sushi masters, nigiri is sliced raw fish with a molded ball of rice underneath. The Sushi Lunch Special was super filling and the fish were all fresh. Nothing tasted briny or rubbery. KS uses superior grade seafood. The fish-to-rice ratio was fair and I would say they had pretty generous cuts considering the top-notch quality of fish. I really enjoyed the unagi and tamago as well; they were flavorful and delicious. There were no complaints from my coworker about her Chirashi bowl, which came with assorted sashimi over white rice (same variety of fish that I had). Service is fine and the interior is cozy. This place has only been around for 3.5 months and we went in for the first time tonight not knowing what to expect. It was INCREDIBLE. Its such a cute spot in North Berkeley, a really wonderful addition to the neighborhood that blows all of the other sushi restaurants in town out of the water. My fiance and I have been to some of the "best" (read $$$$) sushi joints in NYC and SF and this place is on par with Nobu and Matsuhisa, but about 1/4 of the price. The fish was such high quality (as was the seaweed, even the avocado!) that we kept asking the chef how he did it. The head chef and owner is such a nice guy who puts heart and soul into his food. We sat at the bar and chatted with him and he told us all about the different foods we were eating. I recommend asking them for recommendations. They told us what was freshest that day and the sashimi and sushi they suggested (mackerel) was out-of-this-world. Also, you must try the seaweed salad (you've never had anything this good), the yellowtail-grapefruit sashimi, the baked scallop roll, and the gyoza. I can't wait to go back again! This is a great place for a casual and affordable sushi dinner. Although our food was not speedy out of the kitchen, it was worth the wait. The rice used in the sushi was well prepared, not sticky and squished like many cheaper sushi restaurants. Started off with Uni (2 pieces) - tasted pretty fresh 4/5 Chirashi 3.5/5 -for $21, it's a very pretty penny with not as much sashimi as I would've liked.. I also wish the pieces were cut smaller for a bite-sized feel. Dish was moderately fresh not the freshest, like some pieces like the mackerel was meh.. Fried baby octopus 5/5 -ordered this by accident thinking it was takoyaki, but it was delish! Super crunchy, piping hot baby octopus with a nice spicy sweet dipping sauce - chewy and yummy :) This place is a hole in the wall, not sure if I would come back for Japanese again - but it was a decent experience: don't come here with large parties! read more

Authentic sushi! Don't expect to have flaming rolls and things here. But do expect to have super fresh sushi. We ordered 1 roll and a few nigiri. The roll was simple, yet delicious. The nigiri pieces were huge! A bit on the pricier end, but definitely worth it. Luckily when we came there were only a few tables, but I can imagine how it could be busy with such a small space! read more

This is my new favorite place for sushi, even though I have to cross the bay to get here, and need to come early or make a reservation. We came here without a reservation at 5:45 on Saturday and were so lucky to snatch the last 2 seats at the bar. Ordered the Hamachi collar as recommended by so many. Warning, it will fill you up...huge piece! I have never seen Toro for less than $20. Hamachi with grapefruit vinaigrette is so refreshing!!! We also had the sushi dinner with 5 pairs of different sushi including red tuna, hamachi, salmon & 2 chef's choice. Now if I could only find a place this good and reasonable in the city :( I may have to move to Berkeley. read more
