Been a while since I've done one of these unchained Yelp reviews. I definitely think this is some very average affordable sushi so far... not really loving the flavor or textures but they are doing the job. Maybe this should have been a 3 star but imma rock w 4 just to give them the benefit of the doubt!! Sushi is sushi. Definitely would try something else from here

Love this place! Presentation was great, service was quick, friendly and attentive. Food was delicious! Definitely will make this our sushi go-to when in Philly. Also tried the hot tea which was suggested and was the best I have ever had: Jasmine Green Tea. Can't wait to go back again!

Dragon roll and other assorted rolls

So glad this sushi & seafood boil spot opened up in South Philly. Now we don't have to drive far to satisfy our cravings. Everything we tried was so good. The mango and honeydew smoothies were so refreshing. For sushi, we had fried calamari, harumaki (spring rolls), yellowtail jalapeno appetizer, dragon roll, and other assorted maki rolls and sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh and high quality. For the seafood boil, we got the shrimp, crawfish, and snow crab combo. It was so delicious. The fried rice and udon noodles were also a hit with the kids. We were all so stuffed. On top of that, the inside is nicely decorated. The staff was very warm and welcoming. It felt like going to a neighbor's house to eat. Give Kiku a try when you're in the area. You will not regret it!

So first time ordering from here. Staff was very friendly. Tho for takeout. This is by far the most freshest sushi I had in a while! Will be back to dine in with some friends and family! I order basic rolls to test the quality of the food and honestly the spicy salmon & spicy tuna was not a disappointment!

Out of control and Lobster rainbow roll

Very friendly staff that was attentive to my needs. The menu had a very good variety of options and lunch specials. The portion sizes was very generous, I almost didn't have room to drink my miso soup after eating the two rolls. The dining area is very vibrant and the seating was very comfortable.

Very good sushi rolls. I usually get the lunch special and it comes out fresh. I hope they survive because the location isn't the best.

I loved the starter and mid course palate "resets" (included in overall 18 course count). The inclusion of two final desserts was also appreciated as other omakase experiences in Philly are sushi only. The tamagoyaki is amazing so hopefully it'll be on the menu when you dine! The atmosphere was quiet, only two others dining at omakase with our party of five. The drink server was dressed in traditional Japanese clothing and was mostly invisible, yet present. It felt too intimate to be snapping away so pictured is the menu as of Jan 15 and the final bite - the persimmon cheese cake. The available à la carte add ons at conclusion are nice but our group of hungry guys didn't need to order anything additional. Overall a great spot for omakase!

We have been met with perfection. I can leave this planet…read moreone day happy in knowing I have had The...Best. Royal's announcement on they starting to take reservations, a few months ago, immediately had me in stalker mode. I set a calendar reminder, waited for the day, hopped on & bang- success!! Another Philly weekend awaited, Yea! We arrived at Royal (apologies on review delay, circa April 11), for our 8:30pm high top table reservation. We were greeted and seated immediately- right side corner table ready. It's very dim in Royal, small but mobile and a bit noisy. Nothing unexpected. Skating over service, but they are so noteworthy. Our server was attentive, kind and helpful. They HUSSLE here to bus and clear tables. Timing for patrons arriving and being sat was like it was scripted, it was so flawless. No one waiting at the entrance corridor on arrival. Machine precision. Now, our meal- I'm drooling in my daydreams over it. We tried many plates & loved the portion size to be able to do so. The chicken wings- crisp, thick golden fried and tender. The toro with caviar- silk. A touch of brine, a melt in your mouth pleasure. The grilled octopus had an unassuming spice, mellow char and just the right consistency of chew. My husband ordered a surprise- I was scared. Fish heads. WTF, ok here we go. The plate came- heads on heads, quite the portion. This fish- first bite down, intimidation gone. This is one of the best things we've ever eaten. Succulent, moist fall apart whitefish. Didn't even taste like it was battered, no thickness to the breading. It tasted fried but so clean it didn't make sense how good it was. I don't have words. And now we get to the sushi- and I go completely mute.... There is no description worthy here. We had the Dragon Roll and the Spicy Crab Tempura roll. Can we call them the "Die and gone to heaven rolls". Fall apart fresh. Quality. Restrained, but pronounced. Pure. Insane. How can you describe food you will always remember. Except in having passion and a simple happy heart. This is what Royal gave us- in a sushi roll and a fish head. Thanks Jesse and team- simply the best!

One thing though, the restaurant was surprisingly hard to find because there really isn't much signage on the entrance/door. But there's a paper lantern outside, so if you see that, you're in the right place. I had really high expectations coming here and thankfully I wasn't disappointed, although nothing completely blew me away except for the Aka Taka roll. The chirashi bowl was solid overall and had good quality cuts of fish for $52. Everything tasted fresh and balanced, but next time I think I'd personally just order the sakedon instead. The chasu bao also wasn't really worth the $14 in my opinion. It was still good, just not something memorable or mind blowing. Same with the wagyu steak, for $38, it honestly just tasted like a really good steak, and the portion was a little smaller than I expected. My favorite appetizer was definitely the miso eggplant. Such a unique combination of flavors and the eggplant was cooked incredibly soft and well. It almost tasted like a sweet potato with the miso on top, and I would absolutely order it again. But the standout of the night was easily the Aka Taka roll. For a $27 roll, I had very high expectations and somehow they were all met. The roll was stuffed with different cuts of tuna that were unbelievably soft and buttery, and there was this crunch in the middle, maybe daikon? Whatever it was, it added the perfect texture. Honestly, it's something I'd go back just for.

The restaurant itself is super cute small, cozy, and BYOB (definitely bringing a bottle next time). It was pretty empty when we went, which we didn't mind at all. It gave a relaxed vibe, though the service was a little slow. That said, it worked out since we ordered a variety of dishes and weren't in a rush. Linda was our server--very nice and attentive. What we ordered: Spicy edamame: really good, great flavor to start Miso black cod two pieces, but thick, flaky, and buttery with a slightly sweet sauce and shredded carrots. Taste a piece of the fish with the carrots. Yummmm Oyster uni spoon: a standout. The roe bursts in your mouth and the flavor melted together! Made my taste buds happy! sooooo good!!! Fried oysters: nice and crunchy, really good. The sauce drizzled over the cabbage pulled it all together Tuna Tango roll - looked nice, but just okay. Didn't do much for my taste buds Sushi burger - delicious!!! Everything worked together and it looked really cool too! Drinks: Yuzu citrus sparkling drink - refreshing but just okay Green tea - very light, not bold at all, more like lightly flavored water We really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back. Next time I'll try a different specialty roll since the Tuna Tango didn't hit for me. I'm also curious how it is on a busy weekend we actually loved how quiet it was, but I imagine it gets more lively. Final thought: Great food overall, cozy vibe, and a perfect BYOB spot to try a variety of dishes.

Came on a Sunday evening and about half the small restaurant was filled - the space is super cute, with an inviting dark blue color scheme and cute posters and photos of inspirational quotes and dogs. We ordered the Tofu and Eggplant taco and Mushroom and Zucchini taco to start - both were delicious. The mushroom and zucchini one actually had slightly more flavor, but the sauces on both were really tasty with good contrast in flavor, and the veggies were fried just right. For mains I got the Vegan Miso ramen with egg noodles and my husbans got the Vegan Spicy Kimchi ramen with egg noodles. I LOVED my ramen - the broth was deeply savory, the corn added nice pops of sweetness, and I really enjoyed the soy patty - it was chewy and had a great bite. My husband also enjoyed his ramen and said it was one of the best in the city - the kimchi flavor was very different than any ramen I've tried before. Service is good and overall I will definitely come back to Taco & Ramen and maybe try a new item. Yum!
