This place has been here for over a decade now. The food here is comfort style food to me. Always order a combo meal. That's the best deal and you get soo much that comes with the combo. Here's the basics to the combo... each comes with rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables, salad with dressing and your choice of main dishes. Recommend the butter fish, saba, shrimp & veg tempura, tonkatsu, chicken katsu and the grilled steak. Get'um at once or try a couple here and there. They also do sushi to order but haven't done that here. Mainly only get the combos. Sushi I can get from Gaku or Nobu... at Kikuya, they serve water and hot tea as complimentary also. The help here is very friendly and are very willing to please, so be nice and you'll be rewarded. The place is a little small... has about 6 bar seats and a dozen tables inside and a about 4 tables (as what I could see) outside. The little strip mall off of King and Waiakamilo, is where this place is located and has other venues to dine at, but choose Kikuya... you'll enjoy your time here. Grind On! Pau! read more

I'm always down for scallop nigiri or scallop rolls. I've been searching high and low for any sushi place that still served scallop. Thank goodness for Kikuya! Decided to give this place a try based on the reviews, but I was not impressed with the food here at all. The Misoyaki Butterfish were two thin slices that tasted watery and bland. The fried chicken wings were also small and dry, and the tempura batter wasn't crunchy. The steak was ok but it didn't have much flavor. I didn't get to try the sashimi or sushi (I am guessing this is where the good reviews come from?), but based on the food I probably won't be back. So far we haven't had any issues getting seats. Love the flakiness of their shrimp/vegetable tempuras. I come here for this cause I can't find a place that makes it this good that's close by since we live in kalihi. Solid Japanese food. Kikuya is awesome! Portions are large and the food is fresh. From sushi to Teishokus, everything is great. They start you off with miso soup, pickles (3 kinds) and a generous green salad. The pickles are yummy, with the pickled purple cabbage being my favorite. The salad dressing is a vinaigrette, light and refreshing. We ordered a bunch of things udon to Teishokus with Butterfish, Tonkatsu, mix Nigiri sushi, Tempura and New York steak. All are good, but I'd have to say that the Butterfish, steak and sushi were our favorites. The sushi has generous cuts of fish... I think it was Salmon, Ahi, Tai and a Tamago Egg. You can't go wrong with the Teishokus. You get a lot of food for the price. The restaurant is very clean and the service is great. Kikuya is one of my favorite restaurants for Japanese food! Located between the New Diners Drive Inn and Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant. During the busy times, parking can be quite tight, and the parking stalls are really small. The restaurant is very clean and cozy, and the service here is very good. The menu is traditional, and there are a lot of choices. One of my favorites is the Miso Butterfish and tenpura. The prices are very reasonable compared to other places and the food is too quality! read more

We've loved eating the 'ono food at Kikuya for lunch during work, but we weren't sure if they were open because of COVID19... they are! We ordered the lunch box special which allows you to make 2 choices from a set menu and comes with salad, miso soup, rice, tempura and pickles. We had a mix of teriyaki beef, teriyaki chicken, and katsu chicken; we also ordered California rolls and lots of tempura on the side. Soooo good! It totally hit the spot and was lots and lots of food for a really reasonable price (still!) $13.95, which is less expensive and more food than other places we've tried recently. It was also super easy and fast. We called and ordered and it was ready in 30 min, parking and pickup was super easy. My friend introduced me to Kikuya and I've now been there several times, and it does not disappoint. They have a terrific lunch menu that is very reasonable in price for what you get. I recommend the bento lunch special where you can get two items, including misoyaki butterfish and sashimi, for just $15. Although this is a casual spot, it can get crowded as it's a local favorite so I would recommend reservations if you'll be coming at peak lunch hours. Their soba is also very very good. They use green soba noodles which have a unique chewy texture that I have not found elsewhere. Service is very thoughtful as well. Tonkatsu was crunchy which is how I like it, the salmon was cooked perfectly but I wish there was sauce to dip it with. This combination bento comes with miso soup and rice and it made me full. I would eat here again and would try something different! read more

This place is a diamond in the rough. By far the best sushi place in Kalihi. Best time to go is during lunch when you can order the lunch box special for a cheap price. I highly recommend getting sashimi, butterfish, and/or chicken katsu. The lunchbox also comes with rice, salad, shrimp tempura, tea, and three other assorted picked vegetables. We were looking for a place to eat and I found Kikuya in Yelp. My boys said they were willing to try it. So, when we got there, it looked like a dive. I was taught to never judge a book by its cover, so we walked in - not much better looking. Staff greeted us and service was quick and friendly. We ordered 2 combo plates - butterfish, kalbi, shrimp tempura & chicken katsu, shrimp tempura and a shrimp tempura udon. Combo plates came with salad and miso soup. Tsukemono too. LATE TO THE PARTY Any local Japanee knows about Kabuki, Yanagi, and those other familiar Japanee restaurants that have been around for ages... Kikuya fits in well with those steadfast Japanee restaurants and deserves a name-drop or two every now and again. And even though Kikuya is new to me, it has apparently been around for years. (Thanks, family, for finally introducing me to this place. Better late than never I guess.) Anyway, at Kikuya you'll find pretty standard Japanee meals and dishes like udon, tempura, sushi / sashimi, misoyaki butterfish, katsu, and combination dinners. COMBO DINNERS I can be super indecisive at times when it comes to choosing what to eat... But thanks to these combo dinners, I can have the 3 choices that I would have been going back and forth about trying to figure out which one to order as my entree. The great thing about these combination dinners is that a 3-choice combo dinner will get you the LOAD of food (3 choices - generous portions) for under $20. And of course, you get salad, miso soup, tsukemono, and white rice. I'm telling you - you will have leftovers. Especially if you have a nice ice-cold beer (or 3) to go along with your meal. I am a sucker for chicken katsu and I friggin' love katsu sauce. But, deciding between chicken katsu and misoyaki butterfish is pretty difficult. And then, there's sushi / sashimi. And mini tempura udon is an option, too! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OPTIONS?! I JUST WANT TO EAT EVERYTHING. #thestruggleisreal TAYSES GOOD How does the food at Kikuya stack up against the Japanee fare at similar restaurants? I think the food is rather good! Really. MISOYAKI BUTTERFISH The frickin' butterfish was tasty as heck and not overcooked or dry. Of the times I've ordered this, I haven't come across too many bones! I found myself sopping up the oil and fish drippings with my rice. Haha. Yeah, super healthy. Hahaha. CHICKEN KATSU The chicken katsu was pretty standard, but I will tell you this - I left with my hard palate intact. (YAY!) In other words, no cardboard katsu shredding the roof of my mouth. The katsu was breaded well and fried to a nice, medium-firm bite (so not hard like chewing on rocks). And, it thankfully wasn't super oily or greasy. SASHIMI I love sushi and sashimi, so naturally I was curious about Kikuya's sushi bar. They're actually quite generous with their serving of sashimi as a combo choice. At other similar restaurants, I've been served on average like 5 pieces of one kind of fish for the combo. At Kikuya, I was served 4 maguro, 3 salmon, and 3 tai. All fresh. No white stringy stuff. And, the salmon was deliciously buttery. VERDICT Anyway, $20 is a steal for what you get in these 3-choice combos. AND, the food is pretty darned delicious. Better than I thought it would be. Yeah, I'll admit it - I went here with my family expecting mediocre-ish Japanee fare, but left stuffed and satisfied. Two thumbs up! read more

I went to eat dinner with my grandma. She made the comment: this is the fastest Japanese restaurant ever! She was referring to the service. It's true, we sat down, the server immediately came over to ask us for a drink order. She brought it very quickly and then proceeded to take our food order. The starters (miso soup, salad, & tsukemoto) all arrived within a few minutes. A few minutes later, our rolls (spider & natto makimono) that we ordered appeared. Our main dish (2 combo meals) was served before we finished our rolls! The thought crossed my mind that they were trying to turn the table over faster because they brought the check with a takeout box when we were three quarters of the way finished with their meal. However, the restaurant still had a few tables that had not been filled yet. We arrived at about 5:30, and they were only about two stalls left. We took the first one that we saw since previous reviews said that parking might be tight. The restaurant only had a couple other families eating when we arrived, but that by the time we left, all the tables were full and there was one party waiting outside. The meal was delicious, and our total bill was about $80 including one sake bottle. I'm glad I try this place, and may go there again. read more

Since I am allergic to shrimp, my husband was happy to eat my tempura. I ate the rest of my meal along with hot tea that came with our meal. Overall, the food was tasty. The restaurant was clean and roomy enough where we weren't pitted so close to another table. Our waitress refilled our water and tea many times without us even asking. I was craving Japanese food and since we were town my wife and I decided to return to Kikuya on North King Street because the prices are good and the food is decent. We were lucky that the restaurant was only half full which is unusual because you usually have to wait for a table here. As we sat down and dined the rest of the tables filled up. This is on a Sunday and the weekdays are even busier. I ordered the ten zaru soba and my wife had the grilled salmon and beef teriyaki lunch combination that also comes with a deliciously fried shrimp tempura. They served us green tea but the flavor of the tea was too dilute. The miso soup was simply done but was delicious. The tsukemono was not bad but the portion was pretty small. My wife really enjoyed the lunch combination and you can't go wrong for $13.95. She opted not to choose sashimi with her combination because the fish slices were really thin the last time we came for lunch. We never order sushi here for the same reason. The cold soba here is really consistent, the doneness of the noodles is always perfect and it is always served icy cold. The tempura that came with my order was a pretty generous portion that included two shrimp tempura and a handful of vegetable tempura. The tempura was really done well and it was served crispy and piping hot how it should be. I actually like Kikuya better than Teishoku at the Kam Shopping Center and plan to be back again. read more

Kikuya on King Street has become my new favorite restaurant for the butterfish and tempura dinner combo. My aunty and cousin from California love this place and introduced me to it just earlier this year. The menu has the normal Japanese entrée selections which come with rice, tsukemono and miso soup. They also have fresh sashimi and combination dinners. Their prices are reasonable and similar to other Japanese, family, dine in restaurants. I can honestly say I haven't tried any other dinner selection than, -Butterfish: great miso flavor, not too strong. Flakey, buttery, goodness! -Tempura: assorted veggies and shrimp. Light batter, not too oily and tasty tempura sauce. We've been lucky on a number of occasions (knock on wood) to squeeze in and grab the last table in this small mom and pop joint. Atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed, perfect for a spur of the moment hangry dinner moment. The waitresses here work hard and are very nice. Parking can be tricky since it's a shared lot with a bunch of other eateries, including an all you can eat K-BBQ place (where cars aren't moving for a few hours), so it's best to carpool or ride share! read more
